Both GUO and GOD are Duo Discuses (Disci?). NZ registrations are ZK-xxx, but all gliders are ZK-Gxx. GUO's paint actually looks like its registration is DUO haha (if you look on omarama.com you can find a photo of it).
It’s GUO and you’re right this is omarama! I’m front seat and the guy who took the photo is called Fraser, this is an older photo and I haven’t been back to NZ in a minute so I’m not sure how much he flies anymore
Even though I'm stuck with flight training on the North Island, NZ is still such a beautiful country to fly in. 0 regrets with choosing this place for my training (even though weather cancellations ruin me 50% of time).
That brown layer near the horizon may be pollution trapped by an inversion, and I think OP is flying glider in mountain wave. Sans inversion, the air in NZ can be remarkably and startlingly clear (the 'roaring 40s' mostly blow over ocean at that latitude).
It’s got the feature set of a continent compressed into a small island. I’ve flown throughout the PNW and this place is insanely beautiful, but New Zealand definitely is up there.

Nice! Looks like GUO - or GOD? I've only been in UO before of those two (I assume this is Omarama haha).
Who were you flying with, if you're comfortable sharing?
ItsColdInHere@reddit
Is GUO a Duo (Discus)?
We have a Duo Discus with registration DUO in Canada
(GOD is even more impressive though)

Are Canadian registrations 4 letters?
ItsColdInHere@reddit
Canadian regs are 5 letters: C-Fxxx or C-Gxxx. (Or the dash may be moved, such as CF-xxx.) Unfortunately, C-Gxxx isn't reserved for gliders.

That’s not flying, it’s falling with style.

Laughs in Alps
Avia_NZ@reddit
These are literally called The Southern Alps
mikrowiesel@reddit
So your point is they're named after the Alps because they are so unique?

Were you able to see the beacons being lit as Gondor called for aid? Im glad New Zealand was chosen for a filming location.

Meh it's all the same. Ok fine I'm just bitter because I'm stuck in the Waikato and can't wait to get back down there.

SI Regionals aren't far away... :P

I'll be back down the following season when the Nationals are down there
