The main runway at Ben Gurion airport is west/ east 26/08. So for them to be approaching low and slow from the south means they probably did a Gaza flyby first the normal approach for landing is a straight in from the west.

Wikipedia says its effective firing range is 330m or 1080’ (and that’s horizontal not vertical). That plane looked to my eye to be at about 2-3000’ feet (standard approach to runway 8 would have it cross the shoreline at 2400’ so that tracks) and it looks to be a mile or two down range.

It definitely has some kind of fighter escort, I imagine. Also has an E-4. Any kind of threat could no doubt be spotted and neutralized well before they could do anything to threaten AF1 between the radar and sensors on AF1, the E-4 Sentry, friendly ground radar, whatever spy satellites are in space, and whatever fighters are escorting them.I can’t imagine any MANPADs would be able to get through whatever defensive measures they have on AF1.

Yes, I mean how is it different then any other El Al flight that could have been shot down over Tel Aviv any time in the last 2 years (or even since Israel has been formed)

And my second question is, which one of the regional players do you think has the motive or the capability to take down or even get close to AF1 and would also be foolish enough to attempt it?

This isn't Kyiv or Seoul, Israel's airspace is clear enough even without AF1 passing through.

You get the occasional Houthi drone slipping through in the south but they're not gonna be able to sneak one into Tel Aviv and past both Israeli and US systems when POTUS is coming to visit, nor do I see any reason for them to do so.

How safe is the plane from small portable shoulder launched systems on approach? To me landing in a conflict zone always seemed very risky but remember no incidents happening when higher ups visited Afghanistan or Iraq during those conflicts.

i will say i believe this is odd to be flying at a low level, exposed, outside of the US and major allies(NATO).

the actual plane is beyond safe, i'm sure it has insane detection capabilities along with friends not in the video, as well as countermeasures upon countermeasures, some of the best pilots too.

When past real presidents visited Iraq, and Afghanistan during conflict they basically fly in very high, and take a tight spiral decent(relative) to the airfield...

It has flares as well as modern anti-infrared reflectors and missile warning systems- similar to what you would see on a fighter jet.

Also it’s worth pointing out that it could most likely survive a hit by a shoulder fired missile such as in 2003 when a DHL airbus landed after being hit by a shoulder fired missile. AF1 is a four engine airplane and is massive. It also most likely has more redundant systems than would typically be found on a civilian airliner.

It has the best countermeasures money can buy. However they’re nowhere near 100% reliable. Most of AF1’s safety comes from speed, the size of the sky, and the lack of people interested in actually trying to shoot it down.
