Anon doesn't understand what Free Will is. This life is a test and we're failing as a collective species.
BanzaiKen@reddit
Free will isnt free if you have to be cajoled with eternal damnation into supporting some monster's policies.
Pumpkin_Sushi@reddit
Just be a good person. It's not hard.
HDYHT11@reddit
Mfw having a wank makes you a bad person
AntDracula@reddit
Show in the Bible where it says that
HDYHT11@reddit
Pretty much nowhere, as it is up to interpretation. Yet it is still doctrine by almost every denomination.
Catholics:
https://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/__P85.HTM
AntDracula@reddit
Thanks for not showing me in the Bible.
HDYHT11@reddit
Never claimed it was in the bible. Ask your sunday bible group
AntDracula@reddit
Then you’re attacking a strawman.
HDYHT11@reddit
What strawman? It is an official position of many denominations. I have even provided the source for it.
AntDracula@reddit
Some asshole in a goofy hate doesn't make the "official position" in Christianity. You're strawmanning.
HDYHT11@reddit
1) there is no single "official" christianity and it is the vatican's official position. And it is not "some asshole" it is "many assholes"
2) it is the official position of a denomination, the largest one, billions of people. And of course many others have the same beliefs, such as protestant and eastern orthodox churches
3) you are free to provide a statement of a church to prove your point. You haven't done so 🥱
AntDracula@reddit
And yet you think one guy speaks for them all, as you've posted.
Catholics still answer only to God. You're basically talking about a glorified administrator.
Don't need to. Church isn't the authority. The Bible is. If a church goes agains the Bible, they are dismissed in favor of the Bible.
Cope.
HDYHT11@reddit
Where? I have deliberately used denomination all the time.
I do not think you understand catholicism 🤣🤣
I do not think you understand catholicism 🤣🤣
And your points are irrelevant. These churches have a clear doctrine: masturbation is a sin.
And I ask you again, can you show me the statement of a specific church that views masturbation in a positive light?
AntDracula@reddit
Church is not the final authority. Keep coping and seething but nothing will make that true.
HDYHT11@reddit
I agree. You even said that the Bible is the final authority. Who compiled the Bible.
Your personal theology is irrelevant. Masturbation is a sin to billions of christians, the vast majority.
AntDracula@reddit
Groups of people many centuries ago. At any rate, you are still coping and seething.
I literally do not have to, as the church doesn't play into this at all. Non-sequitur. Red herring. Try again, coper and seethe-r.
Pumpkin_Sushi@reddit
Why do I get the feeling you guys entire knowledge of religion comes from Reddit Advice Animals and r/meme posts?
HDYHT11@reddit
What denomination of christianity is okay with you having a wank?
Pumpkin_Sushi@reddit
All of them. This is not the middle ages.
HDYHT11@reddit
Maybe you are the one whose knowledge of religion comes from memes, eh?
Catholics:
https://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/__P85.HTM
And don't get me started on protestants.
Pumpkin_Sushi@reddit
Do you really think the Old Testament is followed to the letter? By Catholics? Good grief.
HDYHT11@reddit
Neither do they follow the new one.
I asked which denomination views masturbation in a good light, you said all, and I showed you that the largest one considers it a "grave sin". Of course pretty much every denomination does.
If you do not know anything about christianity just shut up.
Pumpkin_Sushi@reddit
No you asked which one doesn't say you'll go to hell for masturbating, and that is all of them.
Thinking something is a sin is not the same as a permanent ticket to hell. Damn, forgiveness is the the entire foundation for the denomination of Catholicism.
HDYHT11@reddit
So we agree it is enough to send you to hell? I mean, it is a grave sin
Pumpkin_Sushi@reddit
Brother can you read? The idea that one sin sends you to hell is an outdated notion, if it were ever applicable. Depends on the sin, and masturbation is not a grave sin.
Hell some denominations will forgive murder if you repent properly - but you think they'll excommunicate you for touching your dingaling?
HDYHT11@reddit
Yeah, you have to repent, I do not deny that. (Almost) any sin can be forgiven.
Yet, if you wank and do not repent, it can send you to hell.
tsoneyson@reddit
Oh, you were a good person? BONE CANCER
Pumpkin_Sushi@reddit
Welcome to life. Who said it was going to be sunshine and rainbows? Who said God was going to intervene? Bone Cancer is a problem and as a species we really should have put more resources into curing it by now.
tsoneyson@reddit
The book says it, many times. All you're doing is making arguments to the existence of an evil asshole God unworthy of worship
Pumpkin_Sushi@reddit
Brother if you think the book is still being followed by the letter (especially the Old Testament) in the current age I dont know what y tell you - other than, once again, this is not the middle ages.
tsoneyson@reddit
I don't think that. I am mentioning a very old and central thing in christian theological debate that is the "Problem of evil". I am of the school that this cannot be reconciled.
BanzaiKen@reddit
Doesnt get you into heaven now does it Mr Big Brain?
Pumpkin_Sushi@reddit
Depends on the religion. Modern Christianity is not as strict as you seem to think it is.
SINBRO@reddit
There are at least dozens of kinds of modern Christianity and a lot of them (I really want to say most but don't have actual data) will promise you hell for not believing
Pumpkin_Sushi@reddit
Wrong
BanzaiKen@reddit
Modern Christianity is full of shit and coloring it's own art book because it cant come to terms with how fucking stupid the entire Abrahamic narrative is. You want to believe being a good person gets you into heaven. Great. But that's completely contradicting what the Bible says in multiple passages and direct quotes from Jesus.
No-Care6414@reddit
Pretty sure if you dotn believe in gid you go to hell according to the Bible and quran
Heavy-Requirement762@reddit
you do realize that’s not What Hell is, right? hell’s the absence of God
BanzaiKen@reddit
Another weasel wording by nu-Christians. Yes it’s the absence of God, but Luke, Matt, Mark have all described it as a hot, burning place and Peter that it’s a land in the out dark. Revelations straight up mentions it’s a lake of fire. So fuck your retcon. You are like the Jewish people who hang up an Eruv and congratulate each other they tricked a 2500 year old demon with a big fucking wire.
Heavy-Requirement762@reddit
Dude I'm catholic. Also the mentions in the bible are either by Jesus, Who was famous for speaking in parables and metaphors and revelations, a book made out of a dream in which a Seven headed dragon trapped in hell will destroy earth. Also highly metaphorical. And turns out the image of eternally burning is a pretty good metaphor for having a bad time forever. Just like any Christian thinks he has no way of knowing how Heaven is, no one can be certain either about what hell is besides the base idea of "absence of god".
BanzaiKen@reddit
This idea of speaking in parables and metaphors has been used as a means of control by the Catholic church. It's one of the reasons Vatican 2 was such a mindfuck for the Church as it stopped the requirement for Latin Mass and Latin Bibles. It's used in instances like this where the preacher can delete or twist various passages to fit with the layman's culture and ethics. That's very duplicitious on their part and that's why this hand waving exists.
Saying a 7 headed dragon is a metaphor is like saying Valkyries scooping up warriors and taking them to Valhalla or the plains of Freya is a metaphor for Odinists, or that Yeshu of Nazarene isnt actually boiling in a cooking pot full of shit for all eternity in the Talmud. You can say it's not real, it's not literal, but that is a uniquely Jewish based religious concept (aggadah) and does not exist out of that very narrow scope. Religions believe gods live on Olympus, Valkyries come to rescue the fallen, that a power named the Tao encompasses all, that we are stuck in a literal karmic rebirth cycle and seek escape, that a mountain in the middle of Mongolia is alive and blesses its tribesmen with thunder and rain and so on. The reality is Christianity abandoned gospels that would have fleshed out but pronounced a less than ideal picture of Jesus, such as the Gospel of Thomas the Brother, which has Jesus attacking people with clay birds as a kid because he was the town warlock, noted in Muslim and Jewish texts yet absent in Christian ones, and uses clunky aggadah arguments to create this ethereal place where anything a profound schizophrenic says (that was chosen because the authors really liked him preaching about the Fall of Rome) is hand waved away as metaphor. Real religions don't do that. Even the Jefferson Bible had to try to get rid of most of that shit just for the parables to make sense with logical consistency. This is the most frustrating thing when talking to Christians, your utter lack of faith in your own texts (and rightfully so because it was assembled by guys with axes to grind) and hand waving of fundamental logical inconsistencies is appalling.
King_flame_A_Lot@reddit
so it is heaven
NCD_Lardum_AS@reddit
We cannot have free will if god is all knowing.
If god created all and knows all, he created a world in which Hitler was gonna murder a couple million and children get raped. He knew that would happen yet did it that way anyway.
Or god doesn't know what humans decide to do and as such is not all knowing.
Pick one.
Pumpkin_Sushi@reddit
"If God is so strong then why doesn't he make a big boulder he can't lift??"
Again, you sound 12. The basis for most modern religion is that God does not intervene. Hitler did what he did because humanity let him. The end.
"B-but God didn't stop him!"
He doesn't intervene. What was our excuse?
NCD_Lardum_AS@reddit
I said nothing about intervening. Try and read the question posed. I do not care if god is real. I want you to answer if god is all knowing or not. If the answer is yes, then he cannot also be all good.
That's a philosophical question, not one of religion. It's also completely irrelevant.
Pumpkin_Sushi@reddit
It's the exact same logic. "If he's so all knowing why didn't he stop Hitler?"
Because, according to these people's beliefs, he doesn't intervene. Free Will means there is no Puppet Master making everything happen - for good AND for bad. Seeing the evil humans will commit doesn't mean humans are not in control of it.
"But allowing evil things to happen makes God evil"
Quite the pedestrian take imposing human philosophy on a being Religious people see as a deity that beyond us. But sure. If you think turning humanity into a game of The Sims is preferrable to having autonomy.
Econmajorhere@reddit
My gf does this. She lets me go out with the boys to do whatever and then tells me we’ll break up if I do something she doesn’t like. God must be a woman.

PastaVictor@reddit

Lonely_Cosmonaut@reddit
People accept atheism disdainfully because they forget people will still kill you for their special book if they could.
arbiter12@reddit
Atheism is worthy of disdain because it's basically a religion without a book. All the idiocy of cult-worship, and none of the tradition.
Whenever I talk to those dudes, they don't strike me as particularly educated or adogmatic. Their dogma is just the certainty that there is no god. Of any sort. Anywhere in the Universe. Known, unknown, observable or not. Their god, is the absence of god. Their defense is "according to scientific method!" while not even knowledgeable enough to know that scientific method has a whole section on "impossible to know, but admitted to be possible" (thankfully, otherwise quantum science would have been discarded in its infancy).
Forgive me for saying, but that doesn't stand to scrutiny as per pure logic. And some atheist would definitely kill people, if they could. They would just do it in the name of "pure logic" (i.e. their logic, not actual Logic).
It's fanaticism you need to fear, not religion. Religion is the easiest vector of fanaticism, definitely, but I guarantee you the USSR atheists were not people you wanted to engage in debate with.
Lonely_Cosmonaut@reddit
You’re just babbling.
Jerrytheone@reddit
This is absolute bullshit. “Their god is no god”? Yeah, atheists don’t have a god telling them what is right or wrong. Atheists don’t have a book saying that their religion is the true one and the others are all wrong.
You say it’s about extremism. I agree, any extremist is scary. But what logic is there where you say atheists are the fanatics and religious people aren’t?
FinestCrusader@reddit
I genuinely believe religion had plenty (maybe not as much as we have now proportion wise) of skeptics in the past too. It was just a little harder to express it. Would you risk being kicked out of your tribe that you rely on to survive over a debate about the belief system? Or would you be very vocal during the Catholic reign that boiled people alive for way less?
Damp_Truff@reddit
While the old intelligentsia generally had a mix of religious people and atheists, before the 1900s the amount of atheists was generally negligible.
Think about it. You’re a peasant who spends hours a day farming and because you’re a serf, you’ll probably never leave the land you live on. You accept the bible as an accurate account of events because… why wouldn’t you? You don’t care to question it. The clergy (who you probably deeply trust) tells you it is, and you can’t even read the bible anyways because it would only begin to be translated into local languages (instead of latin) during the reformation (most catholic countries persecuted those who did). There was no scientific method back then and the bible was treated as well… gospel.

I think this is just Evangelical shit that people spew out. Like, you don't really hate Christianity. You hate the Evangelical version that gets peddled by the megachurch pastors and career conservative politicians who are brazenly corrupt but hide it with their pious image.
I think most non-Evangelical Christians will have wiggle room for non-Christians or at least pray there's wiggle room lmao.
GummyBearLincoln@reddit
It is absolutely not just evangelicals. Evangelicals may be the worst but the catholic church actively tries to protect child rapists. It also may very well be the most comically evil organization of all time. The shit they did from the 1200s to the 1900s is unforgivable, and thats from whats documented. Most non evangelical protestant denominations are still living with a worldview like it's the 1960s or 70s. There's alot of individual Christians that are good people but historically and institutionally it's still egregious
Heavy-Requirement762@reddit
Yes, the catholic church’s extreme evil of *checks notes* proposing universal human rights, providing medical and social aid to people and promoting art and science
LukaTheKoka@reddit
I think people tend to forget that the Church isn't a monolith and, as with most organizations, the history is complex.
The Catsonville Nine had five, at the time, current and former members of the Catholic clergy who raided a draft center for draft cards and burnt them.
LukaTheKoka@reddit
I don't think you'd see many Catholics defending its church's defense of child predators but to say they're comically evil is a stretch of the imagination and is an oversimplification of feudal relations.
And you're always going to have that divide within any organization between the ordinary person and the institution itself.
And in my defense of the Church, Pope Francis said Marxists and Christians should work together which you wouldn't see most Protestant denominations say that. Though I think that's due to him being an Argentinian as LatAm's religiosity doesn't get in the way of their attitudes towards addressing inequality like it has in the US.
Due_Entrepreneur_960@reddit

Atheists, who are ‘attacking’ God, are from Europe, Australia, US of A and Canada because making fun of a religion is part of being free (freedom).
I’m pretty sure, you are trying to say something about islam. Yeah, usually those guy have a short fuse. That’s why you won’t find too many atheists coming from a muslim word, to trigger someones believes.

Old-fashionedTaxed@reddit
I’ll play devils advocate for God here and say, what do you want God to do? Take away free will? Cause then he’d be bad for that too. “Just make free will but no evil stuff” that’s paradoxical, that’s not truly “free”, same with the fact that other religions exist, if he just erased all of them and said “worship me or else” then that’s bad too.
Like for the example of Pajeeta, why does God need to come down and support her like he’s some fairy godmother when there’s a lot of other people who see her situation but just go “well my hands are tied I can’t help you out but that sucks!” even though collectively anyone sympathetic to her could bring major change to society so she doesn’t have to work so hard. That random attacker is likely also a symptom of that bad society, a lone mentally ill person who spiraled.
Or that example of Africans, again he isn’t some personal maid who will come in and fix everything, you gotta do it yourself. I’m sure an actual religious person could come in and break down these examples better but I felt like saying something cause I see these “if God real, why bad thing happen?” posts a lot, and it always feels like “baby’s first time thinking about religion”.
