I had this one where my eyes were in her hair
Letsgogehls@reddit
This one really cracks me up, just a tarp for the bottom part w the character printed on…not her clothes, just her. Classique!
agentmkultra666@reddit
These are the kind I remember and they never made sense to me! I distinctly remember a Jem version with a picture of Jem and the Holograms on the smock.
Waughwaughwaugh@reddit
Yes! I just commented how this was my hard-won costume and this is the exact one I had.
empress_p@reddit
I remember a terrible She Ra one.
GrumpyDietitian@reddit
I had that one in 1st grade
BijouWilliams@reddit
The She-Ra costume rocked out. The sword glowed in the dark!
scarred_but_whole@reddit
There might be a picture of me in one of those.
Livid-Influence-5320@reddit
Don't cut your tongue on the slit
Waughwaughwaugh@reddit
I had a Rainbow Brite one. I fought my mom HARD to get that costume. She always made ours, she would repurpose old clothes and thrift some, then sew them into our costumes. But damn I wanted that Rainbow Brite eyeless mask and plastic smock and she finally relented.
Planetofthought@reddit
I cut my tongue on the mouth hole of one of these.
Electrical-Dig8570@reddit
I insisted that I go to kindergarten in mine with no backup clothes and my parents agreed. A lot of sweating happened that day.
big_ringer@reddit
I'm so glad cosplay rendered these practically obsolete.
ImmaDrainOnSociety@reddit
Saw them in stores but I honestly don't remember seeing anyone wear one.
hazydaisy13@reddit
Clevergirlphysicist@reddit
My brother had this exact one
Thin-Atmosphere3166@reddit
I had a Ferengi one from Jamesway when I was 7 lol ,but wore my older lion costume my mom had made to school. No photos were taken and I only wore it to trick or treat my development ,the smock part fell apart by the time I got home and no idea what became of the mask.
Seinfeldtableforfour@reddit
I just found my original 1987 Per Wee Herman costume like this!!
pissjugman@reddit
As somebody born in the early 80’s, kind of disappointed what Halloween has become. It used to be primarily scary/spooky kind of costumes. Now it’s just dress up day. I’m not one of those people who hate that times are changing, more just nostalgic for Halloween off the 80s and 90s
Magpie_Coin@reddit
I had the Barbie one!
Treygp420@reddit
Quick run to the Drug Mart and you could get your pick of the litter
Dannydimes@reddit
Remember? Heck, I can smell this picture.
therealfetusfajitas@reddit

My stepdad got a mask like this one year. Our Great Dane about mauled him the moment he put it on

I took my 7yo daughter to Spirit Halloween Saturday and bought her an elaborate and beautiful witch costume and it made me remember when I was a kid and how my mom would take me to Sprouse-Reitz and I would pick out one of these costumes in a box. And I was equally pleased. I looked up some photos to show her and it made me realize how creepy and weird these were. Like when you see those old timey photos of kids in homemade costumes and their legit frightening.
blue_suavitel@reddit
Yessssss
QuietNene@reddit
I remember seeing my nephew in a Spider-Man costume maybe 10 years ago. It was fabric, it was padded with muscles, it looked like an actual costume, and didn’t have “Spider-Man” written on the chest. I was like holy fuck. My mind was blown. I would have killed for a costume like that.

Here I am Halloween 1987 as Spider-Man, my sister was a Popple and the neighbor was cookie-monster with a badass sword
GMHGeorge@reddit
That’s not any badass sword, that’s a badass circus sword! Core memory
GMHGeorge@reddit
That’s not any badass sword, that’s a badass circus sword!
elquatrogrande@reddit
What was the person in the background supposed to be?
small___potatoes@reddit
A Geisha I believe. Definitely not culturally appropriate nowadays
Greyhaven7@reddit
I outright refused to even entertain the idea of wearing one of these abominations.
Even as a kid, the idea that a trash bag with a picture of a character on it is somehow a costume was an affront to my intelligence. I’m a kid, not a fucking moron.
Also “GI-Joe” is not a character, it’s the entire show… which makes even less sense as a “costume”.

ShortBrownAndUgly@reddit
Yup, had the heman mask in the 80s
lostnthenet@reddit
Ah. Some of my first microplastics.
Shortbus_Playboy@reddit
I can smell this through my screen, lol
pedomojado@reddit
I can feel the sweat accumulating on my face just looking at the mask...
scott743@reddit
I must have blocked my memories of these costumes, since I don’t remember wearing one.
Fappy_as_a_Clam@reddit
Bro, I can smell this costume lol
Prairie2Pacific@reddit
I used to think they were so cool.
JediBeagle1@reddit
Even as a four-year-old I hated that the character I wanted to be had a picture of themselves on their chest like, why would they do that?
bgva@reddit
I cut my finger just looking at this
threebeansalads@reddit
Sharp eye pokes and sweaty face. Crinkle crinkle
rubbish_heap@reddit
I remember having to wear a coat over my costume and being so bummed.
MisRandomness@reddit
And we wonder where our internal microplastics came from.
I only had these, my cousins always had handmade amazing costumes. They always felt bad for me wearing these.
RadioWavesHello@reddit
I had one from a shown called the "silver hawks"
Nacho_Sideboob@reddit
Sticking your tongue through the mouth slot and getting it all cut to shit... good times.

Good old days. A plastic mask and a plastic smock with a picture of your character.
graveybrains@reddit
I've never actually seen that
MyNameCannotBeSpoken@reddit (OP)
The picture ruined the whole outfit

Exactly 💯
Chickenbrik@reddit
I always found it weird that you wear a mask and then have a costume of the character your wearing rather than his costume. Weird logic
TaquitoLaw@reddit
Do you like wearing a costume, or breathing? CHOOSE ONE
graveybrains@reddit
Do you wanna know how I got these scars?
joey_oaks@reddit
Man seeing this just makes me grateful for the year I was Spider-Man and my mom knitted me a mask to wear with my Spidey PJ’s.
thisisnotme78721@reddit
there's action figures of them!
Letsgogehls@reddit
I can’t stop sticking my tongue in the slot. It’s maddening! Iykyk
ornery_epidexipteryx@reddit
There’s a shoddy documentary about the Ben Cooper costumes calledDressing Up Halloween: The Story of Ben Cooper. I say it’s shoddy because it’s obviously controlled by the company owner’s son, and only mildly referenced the amazing talent of Frank Romona- the genius pop artist who did all of the art for the company. I would love a doc just on Romona. His art is what made these costumes so desirable- and he was exploited by the company like many artists of his time.
MurderAndMakeup@reddit
Oh this is such a great suggestion, I was shocked at the story I had no idea.
taleofbenji@reddit
It's pretty meta that the plastic shirt had a picture of the character on it.
JaxxisR@reddit
"What are you supposed to be?"
"A GI Joe Commercial?"
Lost_Trucker_1979@reddit
I too wore that costume from a box. If I focus I can still smell the cheap plastic and hear the crinkle. Nostalgia better not be a precursor for dementia or I'm screwed. I can remember wearing that costume ..
Accomplished_Pen980@reddit
Ben Cooper Inc
kid_christ@reddit
I can smell this. And feel it, I wore this exact one
Dakaf@reddit
The smell of the costume, the cutting of the mask against your face, and the elastic string breaking in five mins… memories.
productofyourinviro@reddit
5th grade me had the Beetlejuice one, couldn't figure out why everyone was mad I called myself the beetlechrist. It was from the movie!?
Medical_Solid@reddit
One year I managed to find this costume from the previous Halloween buried in the closet. I talked my mom into letting me go out for a second round of candy after changing into the old costume.
Didn’t work, as I was the only brown kid in an otherwise white neighborhood. I was kinda dumb.
Think_Wealth_3060@reddit
Cold and sweaty.
d0ughb0y17@reddit
That costume was my very first Halloween costume I remember from my childhood, God I miss those days sometimes. I remember how excited I was when my mom brought it home for Halloween, it was the night before we did the school Halloween parade up and down the halls in school.
toomuchtv987@reddit
I had Wonder Woman, a Cabbage Patch, and Garfield!
The_Goondocks@reddit
I had this exact one
Curtainmachine@reddit
The ol death mask/body bag combo
sanityjanity@reddit
I was "I Dream of Jeanie", and the plastic pants of the costume ripped in the butt.
I hated these things. Kids today have much better costume options (but they are freaking expensive!)
CorporalCabbage@reddit
I can smell this picture. Especially the rubber band. Nothing on Earth smelled like that piece of rubber.
1980pzx@reddit
I had a He-man costume like this. LoL, the mid-late 80’s were a fun time.
pickoneforme@reddit
i can smell this picture.
InkedAlchemist@reddit
I had a Big Bird one.
scarred_but_whole@reddit
The off-gassing all night. I'm surprised we didn't get higher on the fumes than the candy.
PapaTua@reddit
I can feel the disturbingly sharp cracked plastic edges forming around the eyeholes and pressing into my sensitive eye skin already!
Frosty_Cloud_2888@reddit
The smell of vinyl
JosephBlowsephThe3rd@reddit
I remember my sister & I both wearing a Gumby costume like this the same year. Guess it's easier for parents to just dress kids in matching costumes when the kids are barely young enough to remember.
Old_Car_2702@reddit
I had a Cookie Monster version
CmdrKeen008@reddit
The old Ben Cooper vinyl costume. Terrible.
Lorrai@reddit
I had a Capser one
sofakingWTD@reddit
I had Mr T. My mom made me "gold" necklaces out of brass lamp chain. I pity the foo!
aliencardboard@reddit
I had this costume! Somewhere in my parents photos there is a picture of me wearing it I believe. The good old days. 🥹
MoonlitBlossoms@reddit
Man, those eyeholes were sharp..
CurlSagan@reddit
The eyeholes of these things never lined up. It's like they were designed using only theoretical child skull topology. Your choice was to either hold the mask in place constantly with one hand, or peek through the nostril holes as you try to cross a busy street at night.
MrsPancakesSister@reddit
The cuts from trying to talk with the mask on and that plastic smell…whew.
analogthought@reddit
I had this exact one one year… I can still smell the plastic vinyl smell and feel the mask cutting into my skin
limitless57@reddit
I had this exact costume

Saaaame
jessek@reddit
I felt sorry for those who had them
