The Stig encourages Jeremy Clarkson to run for MP! š¬š§

Jeremy Clarkson went on Twitter/X to ask the people in his area on how their representative (MP) in the UK Parliament is doing. Then Ben Collins (best known as The Stig on Top Gear) encouraged him to stand for the next election! How hard can it be⦠š

What could go wrong with having a hotheaded, impulsive blowhard known for making bad decisions represent you in government?
Eagle_eye_Online@reddit
You do know that Clarkson's character is an act right? The real man off camera is something else entirely.
Federal-Research-148@reddit
Yes Iām aware. His Sunday times columns are not (always) an act, though. Those columns donāt paint a picture of a man with considered & deliberate thoughts.
Also, if your entire public persona is based on being a belligerent buffoon, donāt expect anything other than skepticism.
Iām sure heās a good businessman with a sharp eye for entertainment. But not a politician skilled to consider multiple stakeholders who want different things.
KevlarUK@reddit
If the next Government is Reform Clarkson would be almost competent in comparison.
CaptainCorobo@reddit
Clarkson is already much more competent than labour
Federal-Research-148@reddit
They are one & the same. Charlatans posing as wise sages with all the answers (they have none, they just know how to identify the problems), appealing to the disaffected with racist & nationalistic undertones.
I like Jeremy as an entertainer - heās very good at it. He has no business being in office responsible for constituents.
BillWilberforce@reddit
When did Jeremy last live in Doncaster North? He's been London based since at least the early '90s, bought Diddly in 2008ish and I think he had somewhere in the Cotswolds before that. Probably somewhere near Chipping Norton as he wanted to move the Top Gear studio to a former RAF base outside of Chippy.
ArcticBiologist@reddit
Didn't he also live on the Isle of Man for a while. For...reasons
Efficient_Opinion107@reddit
He grew up where they were farming Clarksons.
heilhortler420@reddit
Yes
His wife got that lighthouse in the divorce
sir_sri@reddit
The farm is about 3 km from Chipping Norton. That's almost certainly part of why he bought it: he's 5 minutes from village which has a lot of amenities for the well off, while not being too far from say, Oxford or Heathrow.
KnightsOfCidona@reddit
80s I believe, he talks about living in Fulham in the mid 80s (where he threw bread at Helen Mirren's car) so I presume that's when he first moved away from home. Don't think any of his family are left in Doncaster - his mum lived in Nottinghamshire when he did Who Do You Think You Are in 2004.
__omg__@reddit
He was somewhere in/around Chippy for a good long while. Would see him around town every now and again if you were lucky.
Quinny898@reddit
The reason he's named Doncaster North in particular is the MP is Ed Miliband, who happens to be Secretary of State for Energy & Net Zero, of whom Jeremy disagrees with (mostly around climate policy). I guess it's just coincidence that he's from that area too.
There also isn't actually a requirement for the MP to live in the constituency, but it is printed on the ballot paper so it helps.
HirsuteHacker@reddit
Anyone who thinks Clarkson would be a good MP is genuinely a complete fucking moron. Guy hasn't even lived up there for decades.
CaptainCorobo@reddit
Ahh yes. Someone who openly speaks his mind and doesn't play games around serious problems. O the horror. Also the way labour is fcking the country its not really possible for Clarkson to be worse
HirsuteHacker@reddit
You shouldn't be voting.
CaptainCorobo@reddit
Crazy to see so much hate towards Clarkson jn the comments on a Grand tour sub of all places
richardathome@reddit
Judging by the replies to the tweet, I'm guessing he has very little support on the ground in Doncaster. To put it mildly.
Esteban2808@reddit
Well he doesn't say the canidate is himself. Maybe he plans on sponsoring/bankrolling the canidate
Esteban2808@reddit
Eying up a new amazon show for when clarkson farm ends? Clarksons Parliment?
KevlarUK@reddit
Anyone who has read one of his books will tell you that he has a deep dislike, not just for poor people, not just for working class people but anyone who isnāt in the upper class set from birth.
Heād make an awful Tory but I donāt think heād lower himself to Reform.
BlackCommissar@reddit
Jeremy Clarkson, baron of Diddy Squat
ECrispy@reddit
He'd be terrible, a conservative with no clue how the world works, who thinks climate change is a hoax and only the rich deserve a right to exist.
Its funny how he gets so much credit for farming when he only does that to avoid paying estate taxes
Wescombe@reddit
I donāt know why people would even want this, jezza is class but heās not a politician
ottoDVD@reddit
Perhaps the world needs fewer politicians who act like politicians.
HotAd6484@reddit
Why is this being downvoted?
ottoDVD@reddit
Mentality of the flock, people see a downvote and keep putting it.
Wescombe@reddit
They do, but the world doesnāt need TV personalities pretending to be politicians, thatās how politics just becomes a popularity contest rather than what is actually important.
ottoDVD@reddit
I agree with this.
_MrBeef_@reddit
Nah, we've had enough rich boomer Tories ruin the country for the past two decades.
korben2600@reddit
"End the NHS."
"Wait, the NHS is actually pretty good."
Irrelevant231@reddit
He's a self-described liberal, so he's more right wing than the blue socialists we had for 14 years.
ArcticBiologist@reddit
He's also a self-described genius.
JoeSicko@reddit
That's Dr. Clarkson to you...
DeathByDeebo@reddit
Dr of Engineering twice thank you very much
Xirious@reddit
SLANDER.
I will have no such disgusting descriptions used of our orangutan.
Utopid@reddit
What you say and what you do are different? Clarkson is a Tory. In fact Iām not sure why Iām replying to you, you clearly have a brain injury if you think Boris Johnson or David Cameron are socialists.
Irrelevant231@reddit
You've picked rather poor examples there. They spent money like they were going for a high score and were both largely responsible for the ridiculous tax burden we have.
They don't even pretend to be right of New Labour. Clarkson, on an entertainment programme, at the very least calls himself liberal.
Utopid@reddit
Look, if you think the last 14 years of tories were socialists you clearly have no business in this discussion. Hope youāre enjoying putting flags up
No_Peanut4869@reddit
Judging for his knee jerk boomerisms virtually every time he wrote something related to politics, this would be a legacy ruining disaster. Dear God, I hope nothing comes out of it.
sir_sri@reddit
Even if it did, and he became an MP, there's a fairly significant risk he'd be a basically irrelevant one. What use would clarkson be as a backbench MP for example or shadow cabinet member?
Not that labour is particularly popular, but right now polls are something like Labour 20%, Con 20%, Reform 30%, Lib dems 10, greens 10. That doesn't point to anyone in particular being the next PM and Clarkson isn't likely to want to do the regular day to day grunt work of being an MP just for the sake of it.
His folksy wisdom does play well to some voters, but it's an appallingly bad way to make policy.
MeetingGunner7330@reddit
It wonāt. Heās got too much going on in the farm and other presenting jobs. It would probably be him ārunningā for it as some sort of story line. And heād probably take himself out of the running if it looked like there was a very big possibility of him winning
BartholomewKnightIII@reddit
Just replace him with Wallace, no one would spot the difference.
homeinthesky@reddit
Itās NOT the Stig! Itās the Stigs political cousin!
Utopid@reddit
Look, if you think the las 14 years of tories were socialists you clearly have no business in this discussion. Hope youāre enjoying putting flags up
Wiener-of-the-State@reddit
Honestly the Stig should run imo

Hate.
kuang89@reddit
Cannot wait to stream it on prime.
Camaro551@reddit
Some say he can only communicate through Twitter, and that he once encouraged Jeremy to run for office. All we know is that heās the Stig!
leorolim@reddit
Strange race drivers writing on Twitter distributing encouragements is no basis for a system of government.
FrostyOwl97@reddit
That's Google shunting, Johnathan...
MrEngland2@reddit
Tonight! James tastes some gin Richard is buttons and i run for MP
KnightsOfCidona@reddit
I remember watching an interview with Ben Collins did with Richard Porter and some other Top Gear writer, and they alluded to Ben being a massive Thatcherite (maybe this is Mandela effect but I think this led to the 'Some Say his politics would terrify you' joke)
DarthLordyTheWise@reddit
Thereās pros and cons to this, and I believe the cons outweigh the pros. Not my country though.
KerbalEnginner@reddit
Well... Clarkson for Prime MInister!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YM9Op5zYGE
pinewind108@reddit
Clarkson.... for Prime Minister! (Lol, I can hear that in his voice.)
FlipStig1@reddit (OP)
Nah, the British equivalent would be a certain man named Niguel Farage. Clarkson has been relatively consistent with his disdain for the current US president.
mattlloyd_18@reddit
Gonna presume this was a reply to ManDownUnder?
ManDownUnder1984@reddit
Jeremy Clarkson is the US Donald trump
jedwardlay@reddit
Nice Waterloo reference.
