Can anyone break down his medals? He seems to have a lot
BrooklynTony198@reddit
As mentioned elsewhere in this post, he has both Hero of Ukraine and Hero of the Soviet Union; looking at his right breast awards. Its a good assumption to say he was sent to Afghanistan during the USSR days. Picture is a bit grainy to tell the other medals, and I'm not very up to speed with soviet awards. They awarded medals for nearly everything, so theres probably over 200 different soviet medals, both civilian and military. Some of them are potentially civilian medals. There were medals given out for the major anniversaries of the USSR, working for a long time, good performance at work, etc.
Regardless, this dude saw some major shit.

Apparently Ukrainians are handsy people.

I think he's trying to steal a medal.
BillWilberforce@reddit
Or maybe he needs help standing up?
Ignonym@reddit
From his age, that might actually be the case. And the three of them look like family to me--same nose.

When the AK-74 program was going on there was a few tests done to see which color of bakelite would be used. Green and orange were chosen to be a bit better for camouflage and ultimately orange was chosen because it blended in better in the steppe and arid environments. There were still a number of green AKs just lying around so they were handed out as trophies for soldiers who had exceptional marksmanship. On the other side of the rifle in the picture is a small metal tag with a congratulatory note from Kalashnikov himself.

His Age, medals and green ak furniture, as well as the Stern look on his face tells me that he's been through stuff and earned every one of these
MlackBesa@reddit
I wonder where he is now… 2002 in Ukraine, is ancient history by now, the country has been through so much and so many deep changes, that this guy could be anywhere

Now that I think about it, I've see Olive furniture AR-15/AR-10 pattern rifles but never any green like furniture on an AK pattern

That’s a lot of medals for a Ukrainian border guard in 02, afghan war vet or a guy who found a box of old Soviet medals after the breakup?
No-Reception8659@reddit (OP)
I think he's an Afghan war vet

By the looks, definitely afghan war
