I finally fully switched to Linux.

With windows 10 going EOL and none of my computers being compatible. I decided to commit and fully switch over all of them after years of just using it on 2. This seemed like the only viable option long term. I dont trust using Windows on unsupported hardware and extended support is only really delaying the issue.
I will loose out on playing one of my games and VR as a whole (I use the rift s). But I'm hopeful support will come eventually. I also haven't found a replacement app for Opal.
Im using Pop!_OS on my main computer and MX on the others. Ultramarine was my backup.

Just my two cents, but i generally advise against using something like MX or PopOS because these projects, while they may appear to have solid community backing, are typically not as well maintained as something like Debian, Ubuntu (and derivatives), Fedora, or Linux Mint. PopOS is definitely on the better side of this, but it's still pretty scarcely maintained. I would suggest trying out Mint, especially for people coming from Windows. It's super solid, just works, easy to use, and gives you no thrills.
BinkReddit@reddit
Defined well-maintained? The vast majority of Debian's packages never see bug fixes until the next release of Debian.
SEI_JAKU@reddit
The person you're replying to is being weird, but what you describe is what "well maintained" means. Constantly updating packages is not "well maintained", quite the opposite.
TheCrustyCurmudgeon@reddit
Frequency of updates has absolutely nothing to do with a distro being well-maintained.
Coammanderdata@reddit
PopOS is derived from Ubuntu

What do you mean by "not as well maintained".
Wild_Alternative3563@reddit
popOS is making their own DE called cosmic. It is taking a lot of attention away from updating some stuff in pop22.04. Tho it is still pretty solid.
Empty_Woodpecker_496@reddit (OP)
Thank you for replying. Do you see this as a significant issue?
Wild_Alternative3563@reddit
Not currently, but it does present a future problem of "why are we using such an old base". S76 needs to get Cosmic out of beta and move on normally or maybe put it on pause to catch up 22.04 to newer gnome and what not. Because that could be messy in either direction I would not make a new install of pop or recommend it. Ive been on linux for a while and have never had a problem upgrading ubuntu or pop, but I feel this could get a bit uncomfortable to someone who is new (weather they keep gnome for a bit longer or go cosmic). Tho in my day to day I have not been left wanting.
Empty_Woodpecker_496@reddit (OP)
Im not really new ive been using linux for a few years.
Cosmic is out of beta they are currently on alpha 7.
Hour_Bit_5183@reddit
Pop os is fine. Not as maintained as mint LOLOLOLOL. It's more maintained. They sell their own hardware and give you the OS for free. I'd use fedora or arch though. The docs are just that much better.
Sea_Journalist_3615@reddit
When I was new to linux, popos didn't work right ever for me. Manjaro and ubuntu were both easier/reliable.
DelmustatorLeMaster@reddit
I've been running Linux Mint on multiple older hardware for years. It just keeps getting better and better. If they ever get Linux gaming up and on par with Windows? No one will have a reason to even run Windows.
ben2talk@reddit
Wow, FULLY switched! That's great. Sadly I still use iOS (tablet) and Android (phone) alongside Linux; but you really went the whole hog, eh!!!
Empty_Woodpecker_496@reddit (OP)
I also have an android phone but I plan to switch to something else like graphine or a linux phone when I buy a new one.
ben2talk@reddit
I'd like to have the option - sadly it's a step too far for me, bringing a few too many problems when I just need to stay connected and have a reliable phone.
I'd like to try a pinephone as a second device though.

If you do try mobile Linux I would really strongly suggest that Sailfish be your first impression of it. I've tried maybe ten distros including Ubuntu Touch and postmarketOS; Sailfish is the best and it's not even close.
mrandr01d@reddit
GrapheneOS is still Android. One of the most pure flavors of android, ironically...
tapafon@reddit
Monado has Rift S drivers, so with something like Envision you should still be able to use VR.

Don’t forget you can run GPU passthrough and run Windows for that one game. Think about this before going back to Windows.
Nalincah@reddit
Can you tell me more about this GPU passthrough?
silenceimpaired@reddit
Search for GPU passthrough QEMU/KVM virt manager and your distro on Google to find a set of instructions. In summary you pass your GPU directly to the VM so it is like 98% of what direct hardware would be. Lots of oddities come out of it, so also look up lookingglass .io (maybe even look on Youtube.)

Watch a basic command line tutorial. Even like 10 minutes will be good. You don't have to use it for anything yet, but understanding how to navigate the filesystem and run basic programs on the command line will make it a lot less intimidating and you'll begin to pick it up naturally as you use linux. The command line is actually extremely easy to pick up for 90% of use cases.
