What car would you have bought other than your current car?

I bought a base VB WRX mainly due to price and AWD, but would have bought a Type R or new Z if it weren't for my budget or rough winters. What about you?

I was on my way to check out a used Acura RSX when I ended up buying a new VW GTI. This was in 2013

Similarly, I was on my way to check out a used manual Corolla and ended up with my WRX :)

Have a mk7 GTI. Would buy an rs3 avant if they sold it in Canada. Seriously considering importing one in 3-4 years

I’ve got a 25’ Miata. If I wouldn’t have bought that it would have been a 25’ Golf R or a 2002 BMW M Coupe aka the clown shoe.

I would have gotten the Mazda 3 Speed 5dr instead for the Mazda 3 2.5 5dr. Basically, my car with a manual, turbo, and more horsepower.

A RAV4 PHEV instead of the current KL Cherokee I have. I don’t go off road and I’d appreciate better reliability and fuel economy. I’m lucky to average 23 mpg on the Jeep.

The correct answer here is clearly Buick Rainier

Currently have an m240i.
Golf R was a close 2nd.
Constant-Arm5379@reddit
I wanted an M340i instead of a Golf GTI. Went with the GTI and kinda regret missing out on the BMW fun.
india2wallst@reddit
Kind of unfair to compare the GTI with the m340i
Constant-Arm5379@reddit
Weirdly enough they were almost in the same price range in my country (used). That’s why it was a realistic comparison for me. Of course not counting cost of ownership (higher with a BMW).
buckeyes1218@reddit

Almost bought a Civic Type R or Ford Focus ST because I had the money at the time in 2019. Funnily enough, I didnt know how to drive manual at the time and only did so for Gran Turismo in my Sim racing rig.
Funnily enough, I had money ready to go for a new car and stalled the Ford Focus ST out 5 times during the test drive. Ended up buying a Mazda 3 hatchback AWD instead. Had I had the opportunity to properly learn manual, if have loved the Type R tbh.
SplashingBlumpkin@reddit
Bought a 2018 4Runner and wish I’d have gotten a 2020+ for the tech upgrades. I ended up with silver which is probably the best choice given it looks the cleanest the longest and doesn’t show scratches as much but there were several colors I wanted more and just didn’t have the time to wait around for one to pop up in my price range or within 3-4 hours of me.

G87 M2, same if going 2 door, if 4 door is needed a G80 or the touring M3 if it was sold in the US.

RacerXrated@reddit
My old boss let me drive his 87 911. NA, air cooled, 5 speed, joke of an A/C. It was an amazing car. People obsessed with numbers will call it slow, but I'd say it's plenty for public roads. But the way it makes you feel is all that really matters, and that car made me feel great when I drove it.
User_Name_Is_Stupid@reddit
Sad woman here.
“Supercars” and exotics just don’t do it for me (with one Ferrari exception). But any time I see a nice 911, old or new, my eyes light up and tiny bit of drool accumulates on the corner of my mouth lol

I wanted a Ranger Raptor. Quick, sporty, comfortable, and truck practical. But because it is still new without a notable track record, I bought an x3 m40i because it seems like the end of an era for BMW.
BTW: the B58 is an AMAZING engine.
Substantial-Ad-8575@reddit
Bought a M5 Touring in April. Was going to get new RS6 Avant to replace old 2022 model RS6.

It's always been budget with me, but still targeted to cars I like, and after my first car at 15, a '62 Mercury which I was turned on to Dodge muscle cars by a fellow student in auto body shop, I've been hooked ever since. I've only owned '69 and older cars, almost all of them Dodges, most big blocks, 440, but never had enough to get a Hemi. So that's the other car I would get, a '68 or '69 Hemi Charger, or '70 to '71 Hemi Challenger. I'm still happy with my 440 Chargers, though.

I Turo'ed a Bronco for a week, definitely something I could've lived with but I was still on the fence about some aftermarket things that Jeep figured out better. Also wasn't sold on long-term fuel economy.
That was basically it, there were only two vehicles sold new in the US I was considering. Other than that I was looking at an imported Series 70 Land Cruiser, but I was out of a vehicle at the time and didn't really have a lot of freedom to go chase one down.
KD153@reddit
Have an Acura ILX wanted a Genesis GT but couldn’t get a deal on it in 2015 I had bought 2 cars from the dealership and they wouldn’t budge

MX-5 Miata RF instead of an FJ Cruiser.
But at some point I’ll probably just pick up an NA project car. 😉
Blu_yello_husky@reddit
Im pretty happy with my current car, but if I could have picked anything, id have gone with a chrylser fifty avenue instead. The cordoba is nice but 2 doors irritate me because I can never get in or out of the car if someone parked next to me. Also finding larts is a nightmare for some reason.
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
There's a Diplomat F/S a few neighbourhoods down I've been eyeing - even has a hitch which would make for a cool hauler.
Blu_yello_husky@reddit
I wouldn't. The 80s M bodies are known for their notoriously weak 7.25 rear end they used in those cars. You really dont want to do anything to put any extra strain on them like towing a trailer or racing, or you're at very high risk of shearing all the teeth off your spider gears. Even driving in winter, where one wheel is likely to spin faster than the other while slipping on ice, will quickly eat up those spider gears.
Unfortunately, unless you want to swap in an 8.25 rear end from a 70s one, you really only want to use the cars as grocery getters and commuters in the summertime. Using them for utility or in the winter months is just asking for trouble. I had an 85 fifth Avenue once. I drove it in the winter 1 month and that was it. Total rear end destruction.
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
Good thing I've got the expert here, appreciate it. Might be why it's been for sale a while - with me, in terms of American cars, it's Mopar or nocar.
Blu_yello_husky@reddit
Chrysler products are nice, but if you have your heart set on an 80s M body, you need to swap that rear end if you want to actually use the car care free

I love my Tacoma
Nissan Frontier and Ford Ranklger was also on my list
Went to Ford first, they discontinued the the style I needed, Nissan was too expensive for my budget
And everything else I want more hasn't been built in many years
That all being said.. if I didn't need a truck/high clearance 4x4.. perhaps a Toyota Crown
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
Crazy that a Taco was cheaper than a Frontier, guess times change. Lots of JDM cars at fair prices in our part of the world (judging by your pfp). Only problem is RHD, it can be a pita.
Foxlen@reddit
Late October
Frontier was over 65k
Range was 48k, no more 6ft box was deal breaker
Tacoma I got at 55k (61k after fees and tax). I drove 17 hours to get the one I wanted cuz I wanted a longer box without a long cab... was the last new grey one in the whole country
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
You got the better truck, no question. 65k for Frontier is nuts - I sat in a new Pro4x at the dealer and it was nice but the v6 Taco will have better resale/aftermarket/predicted reliability. There's a Yota dealer near my place and the turbo 4s are sitting around.

Mine has been good to me thus far
90% of its life off pavement, 2 years in

I drive a Stinger GT, adore it, but I’m definitely a wannabe Panamara driver, and that’s exactly what I truly want, a 4S GT
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
Genuinely confused as to why they've killed Stingers off, seem like good alternatives to your typical midsize but with a Soul (that's gone too now).
Double_Dime@reddit
The main reason? Tough to sell someone a 50k sedan from Kia,
The car still exists in G70 form from Genesis, but it’s less usable because it has a trunk, and the Stinger has the S5 sportback like hidden hatch.
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
Exactly, hope the G70 provides parts for years to come.
Double_Dime@reddit
All I know is, this is the best car I’ve ever owned and it’s not close,
I drove the S5, and a 440i gran coupe, the S5 was so sterile, and way less fireworks because of the 50/50 AWD, where as the stinger goes 80/20 so you can get the tail to move for you. The Gran Coupe was definitely faster as is BMWs thing where they sandbag the power, but the near 20k difference in price just wasn’t worth it.
I really needed a hatch or wagon, without going into an SUV because I love to drive, but bigger than a golf, so my choices were limited.
Critical-Cow-2257@reddit

Very similar scenario, got Audi s3, would have got an is500 but montana winters would make it less than ideal.
WRX would have been a contender as well if it wasn’t for the cvt being the automatic option, a depressing thought when lightning fast responsive 7spd dual clutch options are on the table.’
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
I live a hop north in Alberta and RWD and stopping on hills is no fun. The CVT is definitely not ideal, would much rather have a DSG - good choice there.

Thanks it sorta fell into our lap, the python yellow paint caught our eye on what turned out to be a 5000 mile one year ownership car that was heavily discounted by Boise Audi due to having a tune. The tune happened to be the most reputable APR+ mild tune that included a factory matched warranty provided by Apr as long as the APR specified service intervals are followed. Transferred the tune/warranty to my name for $150 and rode off into the sunset.
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)

lord_scuttlebutt@reddit
It really is.
jhumph88@reddit
I had narrowed it down to a Cayenne S, Defender V8 or a Volvo XC90 T8. I went with the Defender, and I’m very happy with my choice
Ragnar-Wave9002@reddit
Have a fully loaded Ford escape hybrid.
Only other car I'd consider is a fully loaded rav4 hybrid.
My second vehicle is a 2011 Ford f150. Might upgrade to a similar 2015 my friend is selling.
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
I love buying the same car twice a genertion apart and checking out the improvements/differences. I think 2015 was first year for aluminum?
Ragnar-Wave9002@reddit
Not sure. Love my 2011 but it's rusting.

Current: Lexus RX 350
If I had an extra $20,000: C7 Corvette.
Tyko_Zx@reddit
A gs350 f sport over my is350
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
GS is quite a bit bigger depending on what you need, I really like the 2014ish IS that everone thought was ugly 🤷
Tyko_Zx@reddit
I don’t even have the 2014 is I have the 2013 😭
Kgtv123@reddit
Would've bought an RCF instead of my $8k is350 if they weren't still 30k for a 13 year old one
Tuques@reddit
Fusion sport, Taurus sho, explorer st. I have a gc 4xe that is great but super boring and I can't really mod a phev
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
Was looking at 2.7t Fusions too but pickins were slim in my area.

Golf GTI. I ended up buying a base model Golf instead because the GTIs are heavily marked up and figured I don’t need the extra power for my day to day use. I bought the car during peak covid too so I got one free accessory and 0% interest financing which are not available on the GTI. Have no regrets so far as the power of the base Golf is more than adequate for my needs, the car uses regular and maintenance is far cheaper.
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
A regular Golf is plenty nice and that 1.4t is a snappy little motor.
MattTheMechan1c@reddit
Yes it has lots of low end torque. 180ish lb-ft I believe so the car feels more powerful than it really is. It only has 147hp which is low compared to similar cars in its class but it feels more powerful and refined compared to other cars I test drove like Civic and Corolla. Handling is also pretty good, not as sporty as a GTI but more balanced than similar cars in its class.
Icy_Communication173@reddit
I would have got a 2500 truck with a longbed instead of a 1500 with a shorted. Been a good truck for 22 years so can't complain too much.
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
Problem with trucks is that you can keep overloading them until you realize you need more capacity lol
DJScaryTerry@reddit
I bought a 25 GLI, but wanted an Elantra N. The stealerships refused to bring in a manual car without a large non-refundable deposit. Unfortunate but at least I have cooled seats.
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
Classier car too imo
SmallHeath555@reddit
Currently have a Rav4 with 215k on it. Almost bought a Crosstek, I know that it wouldn’t still be going with no real repairs at this point so I think I made the right decision.
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
Most definitely
Critical-Positive858@reddit
chose GRC 6mt over Golf R Mk8.5. zero regrets
quiksi@reddit
I have a Boxster, the closest alternatives were a Cayman and 911. Go figure.
JohnnyPegorino@reddit
I own a basic W203 C180K Sport. If I had the means I’d love to have a W203 55 AMG (non existent in where I live) or a W211 55 AMG (ridculous money in where I live)
Recent_Permit2653@reddit
Well, at the top of my list was a Fiesta ST, but honestly I was looking for anything with a manual. That turned up a nice V6 Accord coupe, and a bunch of stuff from Mazda 2s to a Hummer H3. I didn’t even know manual H3s existed. Ended up with an ‘06 Subaru Legacy GT. It was nicer and lower mileage than anything else, and fairly cheap too.
SenorISO54@reddit
I have two cars.
My first time having two cars is when I bought my NB Miata. I checked out a very well sorted 2003 Boxster S at the same time for about double the price. I went with the Miata because it felt more raw and was cheaper. Looking back I should have gotten the Boxster. Under $20k for a Boxster S with a clean title and 30k miles, those were the days.
My Elantra N, again I tend to shop more modestly than I can afford. I could have swung a lightly used M3, considered it. But there are other more responsible places to spend the extra money. I also wanted the nice long warranty.
tigerpawx@reddit
Toyota Prius, I had enough funds for Mercedes A250 hatchback, Acura TLX sedan, Leaf, E-Golf.
Still picked Prius cuz of the Hybrid gas saving ability and less maintenance, more reliable lol …
VisibleSea4533@reddit
At the time, nothing. Have a RAV4 hybrid (third RAV4). Next time around probably going for a CX-50 however.

Bought a 2020 Outback Touring XT in 2023. I wanted a Mazda CX-5 but my wife didn't like the all black interior and the other choice was to light for me. She loves brown/black in the Outback and I got something sporty (Infiniti Q60 convertible) for myself a year later. Win-win.

Elantra N - nothing, it’s perfect Tacoma TRD Sport Manual - nothing, maybe a Tundra Mach 1 HP track car - would’ve been happy with a Porsche GT4

Currently Tesla Model S, Model Y, and Mercedes EQS
Would have bought BYD Han if it was available to purchase in the US

I just bought a 2020 bmw m8 comp. Totally satisfied

Bought a new Integra, wish I'd have bought the IS350 I was also looking at instead.

I went to a nearby city to look at a 2003 E39 in Oxford Green with beige interior, 72k on the clock. It was gorgeous and drove wonderfully, but the salesmen were shady and rude. Not worth it.
Went with an F10 535i 6MT instead. Still a manual RWD 5 series, but more power
e92_dom@reddit
Currently have a 335i, was my first car, would’ve and probably should’ve started with an e36 or e46. But if money wasn’t an object an f80 m3 back in 2018 was THE car to have for me
Actraiser87@reddit
Perhaps a Toyota GR86 but nothing else is quite like a Miata. I never seriously considered anything else.
hatred-shapped@reddit
I may have bought a TRD FJ cruiser instead of my $1700 98 Ford Explorer.
FilmOrnery8925@reddit
I bought a Lexus GS F anniversary edition last yr and the only other car I wanted was Cadillac CT5 V BW with the 6 speed. Was too expensive and I’d have gone straight to jail if I could’ve afforded it. Glad I got the F though it’s definitely the more unique car.
Mr-Howl@reddit
I would’ve bought a secondhand high trim Outback instead of a brand new mid trim Nissan Sentra.
teakwoodtile@reddit (OP)
That's funny - I was shopping a 2024 manual Sentra SR but the delivery date was 4 months out and ponied up for the WRX.
High trim leather seats on Outbacks do crack ;) The 2.4T is a nice engine though.
