I like how half of comment section is sarcastically claiming that he is of every nation. And there are always Albanians that seriously claim that he is of Albanian nationality, claiming some pseudo historiacal sources, not realizing that half of Balkan nations has similar pseudo historians that claim same things. Difference is other nations laugh at those historians, yet Albanians put them in school books.
CypriotGreek@reddit
Alexander the Great was unquestionably Greek, there’s no serious debate among modern historians about that. He was born in Pella, the capital of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia, spoke Greek as his native language, was taught by Aristotle, and spread Greek culture across the known world.
The only people who deny this today are either intentionally misinformed or repeating revisionist narratives pushed for political reasons. Every credible scholar recognizes Alexander as part of the wider Hellenic world, a Macedonian Greek who united the Greek city-states and carried their culture as far as India.
Pjeter_Bogdani@reddit
His paternal line is without a doubt, his mother is from molossian tribe which was Illyrian(but very hellenised). He was a “mix”, but he identified himself as greek. So yes, you are correct, just wanted to say that his mother was probably Albanian. He could be half Albanian, but since the illyrians were goddamn illiterate, we have to go by facts which are that he is greek.
CypriotGreek@reddit
I already replied to a comment like this, and honestly, I find it wild that you people claim as a fact that Olympias’ Molossian tribe were “Hellenized Illyrians.” That’s completely baseless. The Molossians were a well-known Greek tribe in Epirus, and there’s zero evidence that Illyrian territory ever stretched that far south. Saying her mother was Albanian requires assuming that the Molossians were Illyrians (they weren’t), that all Illyrians were Albanians (they weren’t), and that Illyrians controlled Epirus (they didn’t). It’s just absurd historical revisionism. Alexander’s maternal line was Greek, and claiming otherwise ignores all the facts we actually have about the region and its tribes.

Credible scholar do not say a united Greece for that period. But under control within a city state its another thing. Meaning that they faught together and they obey the orders of the strongest city state. The Greek city-states were at war for a long time before and even during the rise of Macedon. It is not unification if its through war and conquest
Exotic_Cantaloupe_96@reddit
Were prussians german? Were bavarians german? Well they definitly were not chinese.
vbd71@reddit
Well, Prussians were arguably Germanized Balts.
Exotic_Cantaloupe_96@reddit
A bit more complicated than that but yeah thats what interesting with history and cultures.
Old prussians and prussians of the kingdom of prussia are quite different people. Old prussians spoke a baltic language and lived in the areas of modern north poland, kaliningrad and lithuania. They were concquered and lots of germans settled in their lands.
My point is that there can be a debate whether they were german, mixed or germanised baltic tribes etc but saying that they were chinese is absurd.
Same with ancient Macedonians, we can debate weather they were Greek, mixed or Helinised but saying that they were Slavs is absurd.
CypriotGreek@reddit
You’re really just arguing semantics here. When people refer to “Greece” in that period, they mean the Greek world, the collection of Greek city-states and kingdoms across the Aegean. Whether the unification happened peacefully or through conquest doesn’t change the fact that it was a unification of Greek peoples under Macedon. Most historical unifications, from Italy to Germany, happened the same way, through war and consolidation, not polite agreements.
PlayfulMountain6@reddit
What are you talking about when comparing it with how Germany and Italy was formed?! We are talking about ancient times. Unification was because Alexander’s power made resistance impossible. Not because of the will of other people within other city states. It was more of a military federation led by Macedonia, not a real national unity like we think of today. Most Greek city-states (Athens, Thebes, Sparta, etc.) didn’t want Macedonian rule. Philip II and Alexander defeated them militarily, so they stayed quiet out of fear — not loyalty. When that fear disappeared (after Alexander’s death), they immediately rebelled to regain independence. In the 4th century BCE, Greeks identified with their own city (polis) — like “I’m Athenian,” “I’m Spartan,” not “I’m Greek.” There was shared language and religion, yes, but no sense of political unity or one Greek state.

Man you dont know Archaic and Classic Greek history and you just do your Albanian nationalist projection!
Greek civ history is one of the best well document for Historian and archeology we have today with also Roman,Egyptian.
Scientists from all over the world make research, excavations etc so we have today conclusions.
Cant understand why Albanians,N.Macedonias and Turks try to make your own history by revisionism and nationalist based on lies....you sound like flatearthers to people who know history.
Greeks back then prefer to have cities states and be more autonomous but that doesn't mean they were not all Greeks and people like Spartans, Molosians,Thessalies and Athenians were different nationalities or ethnicities.
so just couple examples
1.Only Greeks can took part in the Ancient olympic games and all wars stop in that period.
3..Magna Graecia created by Greeks from different cities, like Syracuse founded by Corinthians.
Naxos founded by Chalkidians,Kroton by Achaians,Gela by Rhodes, etc
Almost all Greek cities-states they founded colonies to South Italy all next to each other and the Romans called Magna Graecia....The term appears in ancient sources, with notable examples being the Histories by Polybius and the poem Fasti by Ovid.

Nationalities didn’t even exist back then. He did speak Greek though, and also spread Hellenic/Greek culture. His mother was from Epirus (Mossian tribes) which is modern-day Albania, but he still is Greek/Hellenic.
CypriotGreek@reddit
The only thing I’ve realized today is that for some reason, Albanians treat it as an absolute fact that the Molossians were an Albanian tribe or lived in what’s now Albania. The Molossians had nothing to do with modern-day Albania; their territory was just slightly closer to it. The Chaonians, another Greek tribe, had part of their land extending slightly into what’s now southern Albania, but Molossia itself was entirely within what is today Epirus, in Greece.

He was a Romani/Gypsy. He had no care for the Persians and Egyptians, he was simply trying to conquer back his peoples’ ancestral home in India and establish Romania, and the other empires stood in the way. After his death, the Roma people got lost in a storm in the sea and instead landed on the Italian Peninsula and built Rome, which was a portmanteau of “Roma” and “Home.”

Alexander the Great didn't have a nationality. He was Greek by ethnicity. He spread the Greek culture and language.

Actually, at his time there was a movement called panhellenism, which was somewhat similar to modern national movements, so it would be partially true to say his nationality was also Greek

Emotional-Ice-111@reddit
Is there any national 'Cypriots' or 'too good to be Greek' type of people in Cyprus?
CypriotGreek@reddit
Just visit r/Cyprus, they’re mostly organised there.
But Jesus Christ , they’re honestly some of the most unbearable people you can meet. They have this weird superiority complex where they think they’re “too refined” or “too cultured” to be Greek, mostly because they grew up under the British system and happen to be a bit wealthier on average. They look down on mainland Greeks as lazy, completely forgetting that this exact attitude is something many Greek islanders also have, so they’re basically acting like the people they claim to be different from.
Of course, when Greece wins something big, like in 2004 with the Euros, Eurovision, or the Olympics, suddenly these same people rediscover their “Greek pride.” But during tough times, like the economic crisis, they distance themselves as much as possible and start rewriting history about how they were never really Greek. It’s both ironic and hypocritical.
I am curious though, do you see this same kind of behavior in places like Republika Srpska? I know these people exist in Montenegro, where they also try to distance themselves from their ethnic origins for political or identity reasons.
SpartanKing76@reddit
Don’t worry about these people. Greeks do not have to be a citizen of Greece. You can be Greek and a citizen of Cyprus
CypriotGreek@reddit
I am a citizen of Cyprus and a citizen of Greece. I am Greek, and a Greek Cypriot. An ethnic greek with Greek and Cypriot nationality.

Emotional-Ice-111@reddit
In Republika Srpska, probably not so much. In Montenegro, there are two types. National Montenegrins, who have de facto separated and want nothing to do with Serbs and hate our guts. Basically like Turks to you. The other type is dualists, popularly called 'Srbogorci' or 'Serbonegrins'. Really annoying people with similar superiority complex towards other Serbs. When asked about their nationality they will say how they are 'Serbs' and then proceed to talk how 🇷🇸 is shit and Montenegro is their mother state and other bs.

His mom was Albanian:)
CypriotGreek@reddit
I always find this claim hilarious because it’s built entirely on a chain of false assumptions that Albanians treat as fact. Alexander’s mother, Olympias, was from Epirus, specifically from the Molossians, one of the most well-known ancient Greek tribes. Calling her Albanian makes absolutely no sense. That would require believing that the Molossians were Albanians (they weren’t), that all Illyrians were Albanians (they weren’t), and that Illyrian territory extended deep into Epirus (it didn’t).
Odd-Interview-5131@reddit
I belive its the other way around, part of Molossians became Albanian and part of Illyrians became Albanian, its there in the dna data.
Neutrinomind@reddit
His mother might have been illyrian(which still doesn’t equate in full with modern day albanian nation because we don’t know how epirus illyrians regarded/identified themselves).
Now watch albanians melting when serbs troll in similar fashion when they say skanderberg is a serbian through his mother side :).

Illyrians tribes living north of Epirus(Greek+ Albanian today region).
Olympias (Ancient Greek: Ὀλυμπιάς; c. 375–316 BC),was a Greek princess of the Molossians, the eldest daughter of king Neoptolemus I of Epirus, the sister of Alexander I of Epirus, the fourth wife of Philip II, the king of Macedonia and the mother of Alexander the Great.
