I made the switch to Fedora as my daily driver - no regrets

Switched from my beloved Surface Laptop Snapdragon - that is truly a great piece of hardware I have to admit, but a nightmare to install Linux on - to an old ProBook with Fedora KDE
I upgraded the SSD and memory. Sure, it's way less powerful, but it's still snappy and everything runs butter smooth.
I still take the Surface to work (way lighter, and tools I need are installed), and as soon as I'm back home, I switch to this cosy potato. I also need to keep a Windows machine because it's not really easy to work with the Affinity suite on Linux. Besides that, it's been a really smooth experience. Everything is supported out of the box.
Besides, most of the time I use this machine plugged into an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, so I don't suffer much from the crappy build/keyboard/touchpad/screen, which makes the experience really enjoyable.
In case people are wondering why, I mainly switched because of privacy concerns, telemetry everywhere, and now the dystopian feature called RECALL: that's the last straw. I'm also sick of getting ads everywhere in a paid operating system, and let's be honest, Linux ricing is just fun.
Came for freedom (as test first), stayed because it's actually a joy to use.

(off topic): Regarding Affinity, do you have any thoughts on the current state of the product situation? I just learned yesterday about the whole kerfuffle.

In my opinion, I expect a V3 with addition of AI and and paid subscription for AI features.
I also thought of something that hasn't been mentioned much: a 100% cloud-based version of the suite (like Figma). That would be really interesting.

The latter would be quite interesting, though I'd imagine it'd keep the storage local. Transmitting multi-gig files would be a nightmare otherwise. A browser based app would solve a lot of cross-platform issues, but I'd also hate to see another purpose built DCC stuck in a web environment.
Thanks for sharing!

steam plays windows games too. No real reason to stick with windoze anymore

This was the last straw for me as well; Microsoft knows their operating system dominance is declining rapidly, so they're trying to ring the last bit of monetary juice that they can from their legacy monopoly.

Pretty cool setup, I'm on Debian with GNOME, my only customization is basically a tweaked Dash to Panel.

I actually switched from Win 10 to Fedora KDE myself earlier today! It wasn't a completely painless process -- I had some struggles with getting Fedora to boot after install, along with some trouble getting Brave and Dropbox to launch correctly -- but overall, it's been a good experience! All of my hardware just worked out of the box, which was one of my biggest concerns. Happy to be free from Microsoft!

Welcome to the magical world of Linux!
I switched to Linux Mint from Windows 10 about 3 weeks ago and I'm basically in the same boat as you.
I came initially because my PC didn't support an official upgrade to Windows 11 and I felt like it was such a shame e-waste wise to throw out my perfectly working PC that was well maintained for years, simply because of Microsoft's arbitrary guidelines, but I not only realized what a joy it is to use, but how liberating and freeing the Linux experience is!

I am thinking of switching to Linux and Idk what to do, I installed Ubuntu but I think I love Linux Mint more. the only reason I get cold feet is because Ubuntu is Larger as a Community and More maintained, If I face a problem It'd rather be with ubuntu? Can you give me suggestions and why u chose Mint not Ubuntu?
LoudBoulder@reddit
Mint is based on Ubuntu (which again is based on Debian). See which Ubuntu version your Mint install is based on and fixed and tips for that Ubuntu version will mostly just work for you on Mint as well

I can't help on this specific topic, but as long as you stick with a major distro I wouldn't worry much

Thank you, much appreciate! Oh and I forgot to mention the feeling of being part of a great community is amazing!

I run Fedora in part because I find "ricing" to be not fun. Generally want to have ot think about my home OS as little as possible and Fedora provides that for me. Glad you have been able to do whatever weird stuff you have wanted.

Fair enough! Fedora out of the box is already pretty solid anyway. Different priorities for different people
