What is this piece on an ebike?

Hello! I recently bought an Aventon Level 3 from a retailer near me and am curious what this piece is that they left in my Accessory Kit I got with my bike, it's not shown in the manual anywhere.

Derailluer hanger. Keep it handy, it'll save you $10 some day.
Active_Ad_5322@reddit
$10 is modest. Average hanger in Derailleurhanger.com is $30 (ignoring sales or garage sale/private party sales.
Militant_Triangle@reddit
Not to mention, the one you NEED is out of stock when you need it.
Active_Ad_5322@reddit
Ain’t that the truth
GenProtection@reddit
When I needed to replace one it was 10 dollars and it took literally 2 hours of digging through the box they had at the bike shop to find one I could file to size. Huge pain in the neck, but not a huge cost
Active_Ad_5322@reddit
Yep.. but that is a rarity. The chances of finding a random hanger in a bike shop vs buying new from an online retailer is comparing apples to oranges.
For the average consumer, derailleurhanger.com or wheelsmanfufacturing is the standard way to go.
$25 to $40 is the average retail.
Lest not compare the rare occurrence that a random shop has the right hanger after spending 2 hour of your time finding it. Most people will buy regular retail in goes that if it is the wrong one, then can tear it in or get a refund.
There are over 750 der. hangers available. It is not a simple task in finding an exact replacement.

Hangers are not steel so they're the failing point instead of YOUR FRAME man. If they were steel and your frame aluminium your frame would break instead of a 30$ easily replaceable part.
Active_Ad_5322@reddit
There are many variations of steel. The issue is that aluminum has a limited range of elasticity. Being able to utilize the bending capacity of stop will allow consumers to not have to spend $30-50 bucks on new hangers.
Also, have you not seen that most all steel bikes have non-replaceable hangers?!??! That can be realigned indefinitely. Aluminum hanger can’t.
Additionally, CNC’d aluminum hangers are more brittle than forged aluminum hangers, yet, when you buy a replacement hanger, they are almost always CNC’d
It has nothing to do with the ability to bend upon impact. It has to do with spending $$$ on replacement parts
Ol_Man_J@reddit
Or worse, if something happens and they stop making that hanger, you won’t have a dead bike
Active_Ad_5322@reddit
With companies like Wheelsmanufacturing and Derailleurhamger.com there will never be a time that you can’t find the proper replacement
Bikermec@reddit
You'd be surprised how little of hangers they both stock. My find to looking ratio with them is about 1/10. Most dtc ebike hangers aren't stocked there.
OkGuide3784@reddit
it may not be listed with the brand name, but these hangers are mostly all generic. alphabet soup amazon brands aren't designing a custom hanger, they're just using whatever comes with the frame they bought in bulk, which probably has dropouts designed around an existing design. it can be useful to compare the shape of the dropout to a big chart of hangers to find the right one.
Active_Ad_5322@reddit
I’ve worked in shops long enough to know that between both companies you’ll find what yer looking for. If for any reason they are out of stock , you can call them direct and they will contact you as soon and that # hanger is available.
It’s a main source of income for their company. They won’t just randomly stop making a particular hanger, especially since they CNC them and will always have schematics on file .

This is that rare edge case were buying a 3d printer would be awesome besides just making random Chinese junk MADE IN AMERICA style
IM_OK_AMA@reddit
A 3d printed derailleur hangar would fail instantly, and there are lots of good reasons to buy a 3d printer besides... whatever that is
UnstablePotato69@reddit
Thought that was a plastic piece in the photo
pxnolhtahsm@reddit
They are generic. My favorite bicycle store has two organizers with them, with each compartment having different type of hanger inside - and you can actually buy such organizers loaded with hangers, although I suspect it's a bit pricey :D
Laserdollarz@reddit
On a random mostly-vowels brand DTC ebike, maybe. On an Aventon, you probably don't have to worry.

Derailer hanger
iranoutofusernamespa@reddit
Today I learned it's spelled "derailleur" and not "derailer" like I had thought for... hang on just checking the date... 25 years!

Potentially very hard to find hanger.
Infamous-War4707@reddit
Derailleur hanger. Keeps your frame safe if you crash. Definitely hold onto it.
gg06civicsi@reddit
It’s the Derailleur Hanger. It’s what is used to mount your derailleur to your frame. It’s meant to fail if you crash and protect your frame.
GrapeHappy8513@reddit
I sold my spare on ebay because I know I'll never crash 🚲🤸♂️

I had to get rid of the protective cage to install torque bars! Without them you’re going to eat up you chromoly frame with the drive axles stainless steel axles!
I also rerouted my motor cable from inside frame where it risked damage from disk set screws. Last bike had to be replaced because motor cable got pinched in a doorway.

Axle lock for hub motor. Help secure the hub from spinny...
Illustrious_Aside_46@reddit
Hilarious
TC3HOBBY@reddit
🤣 yes it is a derailleur mount. As a builder and a customizer, i used it to help keep the axle from spinning in the rear... worked perfect‼️

Throw it in the bin because you don’t need gears any more lol..

My e-bike didn’t have one just the aluminum frame. As a result the torque of the motor can strip the channel where the wheel axel sits in the frame. I ended up getting a torque bar.

I need one extra long metal one longer than normal help please
Fresh-Put645@reddit
Derailleur hanger. It what allows you to mount the derailleur itself on the bike.
JJISIS666@reddit
That is a derailleur hanger. It bends when you crash into your derailleur instead of the frame bending. So when your bike starts shifting bad you can use a replacement or bend it back. Is that an extra or something your installing?
GeneralRane@reddit
Aventon bikes come with a spare.

derailleur hanger!!
