Do the not believe in floating docks?
Great_Ratio_6532@reddit
When I was having my main dock put in, I considered a floater, but wanted to tie my boat at all four corners away from the dock for the possibility of a hurricane or a nor'easter (which make fenders useless). Floaters that accommodate a 10' level change and provide tie down points at all four corners are quite a big deal , and would take up more space in my little creek than I'd want, and have too many things to wear, creak, leak, and bind up. The boat is a very light cat, so four 12" diameter pilings driven 25 feet into the ground provides a pretty secure place, given Tideminders or something similar that allows the boat to float at any level. In the "inner banks" of NC, there are loads of professional fishing families who have been tying up to fixed docks for a couple hundred years.

Floating docks are kind of a “rich marina” thing. I really haven’t seen anything like this since Hurricane Florence parked herself over us for three days, and that was a complete sh*tshow; in comparison, this was a laugher.

How is this possible? Shouldn't that dock float up and down on the piles?
Great_Ratio_6532@reddit
Around here (Oriental) most docks are fixed. A few float. I use Tideminders, and have pilings that go up about 10' above average water level. I'm pretty pleased with the way they work. I use them on all four corners of my cat.
I have a fixed kayak dock, on small pilings manually driven into the ground "about far enough." It's been though several storms and water level changes, but this one caused it to float up, pulling the pilings out of the ground. I awoke to find my little dock and canoe gone... vanished! Upon looking around, found it on the opposite side of the creek, (only about 100 feet away) canoe still tied up, both floating happily. The wind was generally from the north, but the dock drifted directly northward. Go figure. Four fenders that were sitting on my bigger dock (the deck of which was underwater on Sunday) also crossed the creak, nicely tucked into the weeds.
With some paddling in a very small kayak (that could be worked into the 25 knot winds pretty easily), I managed to get my stuff back on my side of the creak.
Strangely, I found the paddling invigorating, so after rescuing my stuff, I paddled up the creak into driving rain while all suited up in waders rain coat, etc. Anyone watching would have to wonder if I should be committed.

Took the sails off my boat yesterday in preparation. Waiting for it to hit Nyack.

I’m in Salem MA and it’s getting GUSTY up here on the north shore. We still have a lot of boats on their moorings in poorly protected areas
yelruh00@reddit
My boat is in Salem harbor on a mooring with proper pendants and an extra line. Removed the anchor to prevent chafe. All is good if you are prepared.
The storm wasn’t as bad as the Cape and S Mass.
Fantastic-Hamster-21@reddit
Our mooring field is in the Hudson River. Hopefully, nobody breaks loose.
Tommy-Schlaaang@reddit
The field is so unprotected, it gets zesty there.

Checking in from Oriental. Been dealing with the same thing all day.

Tks for posting these

Not like The Bean isn’t hard enough to get to on a regular tide, eh? lol
oncwonk@reddit
It's been flooded more than once
OutlyingPlasma@reddit
Your dock doesn't float?
youngrichyoung@reddit
A lot of places have small tidal ranges so floating docks just don't make economical sense. Just drive some piles into the bottom and build rigid docks on them.
Redfish680@reddit (OP)
This. We’ve got a little bit of a tidal range, being so far up the Neuse River. We see mostly wind driven tides.
youngrichyoung@reddit
I grew up on the Chesapeake (~2' tidal ranges, fixed docks) but have spent lots of time in Maine and Washington (~10+' tidal ranges, floating docks). It's easy to imagine never having seen how the other half lives.
hellowiththepudding@reddit
What is expected flood time ending? Hope you are safe! I’ve had an ocracoke vacation scheduled for months so watching the conditions eagerly.
jfinkpottery@reddit
It's a great time to visit Ocracoke. Or a terrible, possibly fatal time. Definitely one of those two options. Good luck!
Redfish680@reddit (OP)
Friends with waterfront property told me that it was receding earlier today. We’ve got another day of rain but the NWS Flooding Alert ends tomorrow (Monday) at 0400.
hellowiththepudding@reddit
Thanks, I saw that (NWS alert)! Hope your boat is riding out safely.
Redfish680@reddit (OP)
Fine. There was about a foot of water over the dock and she was riding so high I had the thought “If it wasn’t raining, I could probably touch up the bootstripe from here…”
63pelicanmailman@reddit
We have that down in New Orleans as well. My family camp back up in the swamps will get flooded if the wind stays out of the east southeast for two days straight. (It was made for that).
happinessislattitude@reddit
I’m on an island currently lol

At least you’re on the side of the ramp your boat is on…

I've worked on Marinas for the last 20odd years... This is a reoccurring nightmare for me..

Yeh - you can’t dock there. 😂

Imma just sit here and feel smug about my mooring ball and little rowing dinghy.

Sheeeez… nsfw tag or something! I’m blissfully waiting it out on my couch, and got sucked back into reality with this post.

I spot an Ericson.

The one time we’ve been glad we’re on the hard down the road in Beaufort, at least we can get on and off the boat without needing the dingy 😂

At first look I thought McCotters in little Washington.
