Got sent off my bike going 30 mph

First crash - feel terrible
I was riding my Ebike, going about 30 mph and hit the breaks too hard on a slippery road, skidded into an Akira slide and flew off my bike sideways.
Hit the ground on my left side and rolled a couple times onto my left wrist VERY painfully. Scratched my leg up from the rolls a little bit but not so bad.
My left break lever is completely bent out (which can be replaced Ig) but my bikes frame has some nasty deep scratches from the fall, otherwise works and looks perfectly fine.
I feel like shit mentally and physically...I don't even want to ride again.
chrispark70@reddit
No offense meant here, but this is why you really shouldn't be cruising around at 30mph. You should treat this speed and higher as a motorcycle, in terms of gear.
Peeve1tuffboston@reddit
This is why I'm satisfied with the 25mph I get out of my RadRunner 2... It's fast enough, I'm more interested in range over speed...sorry you got hurt, but please get back on as soon as possible and get yourself past this...
Unique_Artichoke_517@reddit
I've had a run-in with the asphalt a few times. It's normal and being a little shaken afterwards is normal as well. The best way to overcome that fear response is just hoping back on. Trust me after my first fall I was absolutely frightened but it goes away with every successful ride. Mind you when I fell i had my daughter on the back and I made us fall so I would get the brunt of the impact. I cut up my knees and elbow and it took like a month to heal. But I got back on and love riding again. Take it slow, go at your own pace.
007peter@reddit
30mph crash is dangerous on roadbike, ebikes, or motorcycle. I personally CAP my speed @20mph @all time. Slower speed allow me to brake & control my bikes safer. Personally I don't think 72v 50mph ebike should ever exist. Once you go beyond 30mph, you're putting life's @risk 💀
DisastrousClaim2265@reddit
It's up to the individual. If you're an adult, you should be allowed to choose how you want to die
Designer-Finger-4852@reddit
That logic extends to not being killed in an unwanted way, say by an irresponsible individual carelessly operating an unregistered, uninsured motorcycle.
diablosp@reddit
There's a reason ebikes are limited in Europe. To 15,5mph, precisely. Most of us don't like it, or see it as too slow, but it's plenty speed to die if you're unlucky. In the end, I'm starting to see it as a positive thing. It's slow, but enough for a bike.
ChampionshipBig9690@reddit
You don’t have any issues with the concept of governmental overreach? If I was a European I would have a very hard time with the amount of regulation-I feel like there’s a disproportionate amount of governmental enthusiasm for regulations that are intended to restrict the public’s ability to live freely (a right that everyone on the planet should have so long as you arent directly harming anyone in the process). I can’t even imagine a scenario where I’d be ok with the government mandating that I can only ride an e-bike 15.5 mph, unless the law pertained to sidewalks only or something. I’ll prob be downvoted on this, but it seems to me that Europe as a whole is too permissive of governmental interference in what they are and aren’t allowed to do as private citizens. The UK (while no longer technically a part of Europe) jails upwards of 33 people per day solely for things they’ve posted on social media, and somehow they’ve avoided major civil unrest over it….a different issue but worth mentioning as a flashing red indicator of a society that has grown too comfortable trading freedom for “security.”
Designer-Finger-4852@reddit
A motorcycle is a motorcycle. Importing a motorcycle with pedals doesn’t change the fact that you need a license & insurance to drive it nor the fact that the machine needs to be registered and taxed. Dodging the issue is wrong. Fifty years ago, mopeds were everywhere in europe. 49cc or less, 16 y.o. or older, no license required. The U.S. took decades to allow such.
BoringBob84@reddit
That statement is ironic. When I ride fast / powerful electric cycles carelessly on non-motorized paths, then I am "directly harming people in the process."
Designer-Finger-4852@reddit
A motorcycle is a motorcycle. Get it registered, get a license, follow the rules of the road just like every other motorcycle rider. The fact that someone sneaks these into the US under the guise of “it has pedals” is a specious argument.
BoringBob84@reddit
The motivation is obvious to me: to get the power and the speed of a small motorcycle and the privileges of a bicycle (to ride on non-motorized infrastructure) with none of the responsibilities of a motorcycle (e.g., license, registration, insurance, safety equipment, etc.).
The price for this is the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists on non-motorized paths.
diablosp@reddit
Security for everybody, in the form of speed limits to electric assist, while at the same time allowing you to do what you like, is in my eyes, a good regulation. Remember the law only dictates the speed when the motor stops assisting, you can go as fast as the road allows.
About Freedom. When put in the hands of ignorant, irresponsible people, freedom leads to accidents, and some innocent people lose their freedom in the process. You just have to take a look into the gun problem in the US. That's what too much freedom brings. In fact, I would say correct regulations bring more freedom to more people.
doktorstrainge@reddit
Yet the US has deported literal citizens
Fearless_Tomato_9437@reddit
All of Reddit should just move to Europe and bask in the nanny state. Those of us left in the new world can enjoy a little freedom, which is, after all, the reason my ancestors fled Europe.
strange-humor@reddit
Would if I could. Then I could live in a country where healthcare is a human right and not a profit margin. Incomes drop and quality of life soars.
celeste_ferret@reddit
It's actually pretty rare that "freedom" was a main reason for our European ancestors to have immigrated to America. Just like today, most people immigrated here to flee poverty in jhopes of better economic opportunity. Chances are pretty good that your ancestors weren't really much different from the immigrants of today.
diablosp@reddit
Your precious freedom causes accidents. And when your freedom to do something limits my freedom to live, there's a line that's been crossed.
Freedom is good, if you're reasonable. But reason, and respect, is lacking severely lately. And that's when you need rules. The hard part is for politicians to make rules that are reasonable. And in that, I prefer Europe.
randomusername3000@reddit
the US system where most bikes are limited to 20mph is working pretty well and there are not a significant amount of injuries with these kinds of ebikes. the main complaint people have in the US are overpowered ebikes that do not comply with the class system
Subject_Finger_4804@reddit
Big brave tough American..everything is political.
BoringBob84@reddit
Rights are not absolute. The government has a responsibility to intervene when one person abuses their rights to infringe on the rights of other people. Such is the case when selfish people ride dangerously among pedestrians and bicyclists.
The_Aesthetician@reddit
Most people simply haven't learned how to ride at speed. Beginners always slam the brakes and eat it as a first instinct
hiJackmeoff@reddit
Yeh braking on gravel gave me that experience at the young age of about 11 I think it was
BoringBob84@reddit
I agree. I don't think that most people understand how important speed is to safety. The damage and injury in a collision is proportional the the square of the speed, so a collision at 30 MPH / 48 kph will cause four times the damage and injury as a collision at 15 MPH / 24 kph.
Barbarake@reddit
I see it as a positive thing.
TangoDeltaFoxtrot@reddit
Sounds like you were riding above your ability level and/or too fast for conditions. Maybe learn how to properly operate a motor vehicle before heading back out.
Mantronix79@reddit
Fear unlocked.... that sucks.. I keep almost pulling the trigger on a ebike..
Limp_Calligrapher912@reddit
My brother got tossed first time he rode his new ebike. Now, he wont touch it(brand new). U have to get to know your bike before flying at 30. I travel often at 30 or above, but I rode motorcycle before the ebike. 30 will hurt you. Everyone should be careful and for sure WEAR HELMET
deadflat62@reddit
Ouch. I put cargo baskets on the front and back, and since haven’t gone above 25, calling it “commuter mode.” There’s only one downhill into uphill slope that I actually can pick up speed on and the pavement is new luckily. Otherwise I drive like a grandma because I’ve crashed on ski’s and an ATV in the past and I’m good on risking it for fun anymore. /oldge
MorningParking1477@reddit
15 mph is plenty fast enough for me. Have had 2 wet roads leaves slip and slide on my ebike.
TigerStripedSol@reddit
I’ve dumped mine a few times. It breeds caution and awareness about road conditions/surfaces and personal limits in handling your bike. Stay safe!
vapenutz@reddit
I've fallen on a road where there was ice that I didn't see at first under the layer of leaves. My leg was proper violet but it taught me a lot lol
Born-Ask4589@reddit
Yeah, nothing teaches you respect for wet roads quite like eating pavement. Glad you're still riding.
Fair-Discipline-1005@reddit
The most important is, You are ok. Someone also throw my bike on the ground, and I alone bend my brake lever with hands, its a litlle bit different, but I used to... almost like original...👍
chucklestexas@reddit
I got mine up to 28 mph just to see if it would get there, bur 12-14 is plenty fast for me, and mostly around 10. I like to look at stuff while I'm tooling around, not playing Road Warrior all the time. If I need to get somewhere quick, I just take the truck.
Brilliant_Wash_9017@reddit
You should definitely ride again, but if it’s wet out, slow down, you’re only connected to the road by two square inches of rubber.
inuaki1@reddit
I slipped on ice in January going maybe 20km/h . Fractured my shoulder . The next 2 months were not funny at all . Got back on my bike the moment my doctor deemed me able to work . You'll be fine . Just be more careful which you will be as this accident will make you way more alert.
MoneySings@reddit
Man, I fell down some steps and put my shoulder through a metal railing resulting in a dislocated shoulder, broken shoulder and I tore my rotator cuff off. It’s been 13 months and I am still in pain with restricted movement. My physiotherapist says my progress is good but I have another year before they declare it as “restored”…
inuaki1@reddit
Ufff, shoulder injuries are no joke . I'm also still recovering for who knows how long but it's not as bad as you and I'm also too lazy to do my physio lol . Fingers crossed you recover fast man.
MoneySings@reddit
Thanks - good luck with you too :)
It didn’t help that the hospital missed the broken shoulder FIVE times and took 4 weeks for them to tell me it was broken and unsupported. 6 weeks for surgery.
One_Assistance1323@reddit
Dang you were lucky flew off mine when skid and got up sore wirh bumb on arm to find out later at hospital cracked forarm bone in different spots from wrist to elbow .Had to have emergency reconstructive surgery and bolts and screws along with plate in
Deadmonkey28@reddit
Ouch, that sounds rough. Crashing at that speed is scary, both physically and mentally. Take time to heal, don’t rush back, and maybe start slow when you feel ready again.
Helleri@reddit
Gotten checked out? Don't miss on that. You can be walking around with something severely wrong that feels fine.
Most_Time8900@reddit

CryptographerOwn84@reddit
WhereasJazzlike@reddit
Yes I just had two wrecks and two months after 5 years of no accidents. It can be a little bit upsetting but don't let it detour you from having fun on your bike. You just have to be more careful make sure you wear a helmet at high speed and maybe get some better attire. I got a concussion and a fractured wrist on my first accident.
Ok-Quit9120@reddit
Sorry this happened glad u are ok. but just avoid wet roads don’t ride in rain.
FullMeltAlkmst@reddit
I never rode a motorcycle and bought a big e-bike for my first. Before the e bike I did lots of mountain biking & learned caution from doing anything extreme so hitting 45 I play it safe like only in designated areas. If I fall I’m losing skin & I’m old so I get my thrill then back off if traffic conditions pick up.
Muramusaa@reddit
Yup thats why terrain knowledge is a must wood bridges when wet! or mossy...paint isn't textured because they think its fine when its not... even thin tired cars could have issue. Also tar fillings can be slippery, oil gotta be looking for rainbows or black spills look out for that constantly! Cars and people never fix them usually sadly they are cheap and lazy most the time.
When it rains be sure to slow down slowly then stay at speed above fast like 30mph! Then turn when you're like 15mph then speed up. Frozen Temps like snow should have studded tires and slow throttle and abs if you can like magura
The issue with people is they think automatic fast thinking driving is enough but you need to be slowly and fastly alert the whole time every ride till you die!
Wflagg@reddit
fix the paint with a high contrast color, now your bike has a cool scar!
Horror-Lock-5752@reddit
As a lifelong motorcycle rider and still a multi bike owner and rider; I can tell you the single biggest difference between my first (decent quality $2k) ebike is without a doubt the tires! Quality motorcycle tires make these lumpy 4" wide, no water channel, little silicate, poorly shaped POS look like hot wheels tires. I don't understand how such crappy tires these ebikes have are still so expensive. Motorcycle tires weigh a lot more and thus a lot more rotational mass, short of that I don't know why motorcycle tires aren't used, they far safer and superior technology already exists, make use of it. I HIGHLY doubt the OP goes down in that situation with a good set of sport touring motorcycle tires on that Ebike.
Proud_P@reddit
Do you have hydraulic breaks? Its made me feel a lot safer
Middle_Tea1014@reddit
When I was first learning to ride mine, I hit the throttle and took off almost crashing into a gazebo, but wound up crashing into some bushes. I laid there underneath the bike, laughing at myself for a good five minutes. Then it took me another 15 minutes to turn myself the right way and get from underneath the bike. I was sore for days and scratched my hand. But I still ride it every chance I get, I love it. You know better now, please don’t give up on having fun. 😊
morgan423@reddit
Why are you doing 30 on wet roads? Cars aren't the only thing that can hydroplane, or lose traction on slippery surfaces.
Slow down when it's wet, you'll be okay.
-Gman_@reddit
You got a full face helmet?
Quarter-Whole@reddit (OP)
Yes luckily I had my motorcycle helmet, gloves and a thick leather/aviator jacket and layers, otherwise I definitely would have been hurt more. So far just a small broken bone in my wrist, but it's all still in place. 🙏🏾
-Gman_@reddit
Sucks to hear, but like they say on motorcycles - there are two types of riders, those who have crashed and those that have yet to crash.
Melodic-Matter4685@reddit
You slid into Akira on your bike? Bad tetsuo!!! Save that for the rival gang. Or, u know Cowrie when u big as a battleship
Sylphrena99@reddit
The speed limit on all the trails I ride is 15 so I’ve only ever even tried going like 20. I can’t imagine how much it must hurt to wreck at 30!!! So sorry and hope you heal quickly and well!
Odd-Bag-9638@reddit
Take your time getting back on. First crash always messes with your head more than your body. Glad the frame's mostly okay bent brake lever's an easy fix

Conscious_Ad_6110@reddit
Yeah for real. First crash is always the reality check. Way more aware of wet surfaces now
Commentariot@reddit
No - the best thing is to get some motorcycle training and some PPE.
indianabobbyknight@reddit
Yeah I recently destroyed myself on my e bike, I rode home, it was better than walking.
WesleyR98@reddit
I went down at 18mph about two years ago. No gear at all, not even a helmet. Tore all the skin off my left palm, messed up my wrist, bounced my head off the ground and got some pretty bad road rash. Take some time to recover. Invest in some decent riding gear and take it slow when you start riding again!
Sp43C0wb0y@reddit
dont ride without a helmet come on
23XLT5L@reddit
I personally wear padded, breathable(Florida summers are hot) fingerless gloves since I know instinct will have one putting their hands out of they go down. 90% percent of our riding is in unpaved wildlife management areas and marsh levels.
23XLT5L@reddit
Taking corners on the roads can be sketchy, even more so after it's rained and there's soft areas.
WesleyR98@reddit
I don’t now. I’m one of those “learn the hard way” people. 🤷♂️
The_Grungeican@reddit
you already had the hard way, but you didn't seem to learn from it.
you don't need a ton of gear to ride bikes, unless you're doing 30+mph, like OP was. we used to get up to speeds like that on our bikes, going down hills and such. you really don't want to wreck going that fast.
anyways, decent shoes, helmet, maybe some gloves with a reinforcement around the palm area. i grew up in the 80's and 90's. we didn't use helmets. that doesn't make us tougher, we were just the ones who got lucky. hell half my bikes didn't even have brakes.
WesleyR98@reddit
I did learn from it. Now I don’t ride without gear. No level of skill will stop other people from making mistakes. Having on the correct gear can be the difference of life or death because someone else made a mistake. Before I thought “just a quick ride, no big deal”. Now I don’t get on any bike, e-bike or motorcycle without the proper gear.
The_Grungeican@reddit
yeah, i saw your other post where you mentioned that. i edited my original post.
WesleyR98@reddit
All good!
wedstrom@reddit
I don't know why you're getting downvoted, this is a valuable lesson to share. A lot of people probably don't realize how badly 18mph can hurt you.
WesleyR98@reddit
Yeah, it was one of those “it’s just a few blocks, I don’t need my gloves or helmet” situations and I fucked up lol. I always ride with the minimum of glove and helmet with full face protection now. Even if it’s a few blocks.
wedstrom@reddit
I'm pretty consistent about wearing gloves, but I forgot ONE TIME. Luckily, it was a comically stupid gravel slide at very low speeds on my acoustic so it was a very mild scrape. I literally had my gloves in my saddlebag. Sometimes that's what it takes
CaliHeatx@reddit
I’ve been riding bikes, dirtbikes, and motorcycles all my life. All of us 2 wheeled enthusiasts crash once in a while, it’s totally normal. It just sucks the first time because your confidence is shaken. But after a while you’ll get over it and think of it as just a hard lesson to learn, and you’ll probably never make the same mistake again!
I suggest staying in the 20MPH range for a while until you feel comfortable again. And make sure you have good protective equipment on.
Gobbelcoque@reddit
"drive/ride at a speed appropriate for the conditions."
I've lowside my motorcycle once pulling off onto the shoulder and not seeing the gravel at about 20mph. It sucks.
But you can't just drive any vehicle in the wet just like the dry.
UtmostProfessional@reddit
19mph earned me a proximal humerus fracture, and ~3-4 months recovery.
Full face helmet, get a motorcycle jacket and pants w/pads.
Better safe than sorry.
xorbe@reddit
That's called a "high side" accident. Bad because it launches you.
Civil-Wolverine-3770@reddit
I fell about 5 weeks ago and separated my AC joint I’m fucked for now. I really can’t wait for this to be back to almost normal again so I can get back on my ride
EffectiveCharge1804@reddit
Lesson learned , riding that fast in wet conditions wasn’t too bright .
DontTreadOnMe1987@reddit
Clean the scratches and wax her up. Now ya got a story to tell a chick 🤘 we all crash bro. My step son whiskey throttled yesterday and now we got memories 😂 live and learn brobro, this will make you wiser
Quarter-Whole@reddit (OP)
I appreciate that bro you're right. 🥲 Currently in the ER for my wrist but all I can think about is how to get my bike fixed up. Checked the tire this morning and it's flat too, I'm glad I got home before it deflated. Gotta pump it up temporarily to bring it into the nearby shop, order a new brake lever and cover the scratches 😮💨
DontTreadOnMe1987@reddit
Tires are easy to replace bro.. I consider it bike maintenance but shops can do it fast. Also brakes come with caliper and brake lever, all you gotta do is bolt her down. Can’t be scared to ride tho. I ride dirt bikes and just this year alone I shattered my big toe, broke my jaw and have titanium plates in jaw, lost hearing in my right ear 👂 (I still got my left so I’m good! 😂) thr crash is coming man, get yo butt up, wipe thr blood off and get on your bike.
Ok-Armadillo-392@reddit

To be real if you want to learn about road conditions and get an instinct of how you should ride, get a e scooter with solid rubber tires that fill with no air. Rain? Fell 12 times after it rained but It was winter and I was wearing gloves and a thick jacket so I was safe and got back up. Any type of slightly hard brake or turn during not super optimally road conditions makes me slip like a slide. I one time crashed into a telephone pole and it fucked me up. The scooter surprisingly still works and has just a few scratches on the side and on the motor hub and handlebars. I bought an Hiboy s2 and it’s a tank but slides too much

I felt the same way after a nasty crash I had. I was going down the hill about 15 or 20 mph and a parked car opened its door right into traffic. Nothing I could do. I was riding in the bike lane like I was supposed to.
I was pretty adament that I didn't wanna ride anymore. For some people, they might quit. Others might not. What you need right now is time to process your emotions, and let your body heal. It was a pretty traumatic event.
AbaAbdurRahman@reddit
Hey, you don’t have a choice! Take time to heal, fix your bike and get your a$$ back out there!
IfIClaim2Be@reddit
I've been there. Take a bit, let yourself heal physically and then make sure the bike is in good shape before doing a short, maybe 5 minute ride on a familiar road at a low speed. It's gonna be terrifying but sometimes, you just gotta get back in the saddle
PoisonMind@reddit
After a helmet, the next most important piece of protective equipment is a sturdy pair of gloves. It's instinctive to try to break your fall with your hands.
No-Enthusiasm-1115@reddit
I crashed. Hard. Into a huge mail box thing Very sliced up by metal. I didn't want to ride. Plus I cant derive cars due to anxiety other issues and this shook me up. But I did lil rides and longer and longer and longer rides. Slow speeds. Good weather. Protective gear. If you have to or want to ride again if not. Try again next year maybe or sell it but wait a year or so and decide then. Its your pride and confidence thats hurting huh? Thats not fun. Hugs. Better luck next time if there is one. Heal up
Kasegauner@reddit
Brakes, not breaks. No wonder you didn't stop.
Rattlingplates@reddit
Yeah I’ve fallen a few times at 30 not much fun. Always riding the next day though !
Aromatic-Tourists@reddit
For a long time I maxed out my mph but after my first accident similar to OP I dropped it back down to 20.
First thing everyone should do when they buy an e-bike is make sure the brakes are the best they can get. For example Rad sells junky brakes and small rotors - make sure the rotors at a minimum are the largest you can find for your bike.
Negative-Wishbone634@reddit
The hardest part of getting hit by a car the first time was deciding if I would ride to work the next day. I did and am glad but it took me a bit brain work to make me not think it was just going to happen again. Heal up and keep riding. Fix the brake, the frame is probably fine but take it to a shop if you're unsure

You gotta hold that brake like a motorcycle when you stop
independentscramblr@reddit
The rule I follow is simple: Air check, brake check, visual check, gear check, and camera.
Speed matters — Over 25 mph only on familiar straight roads, under 25 mph when I need to stay cautious. These habits keep me balanced between crashing and staying safe.
Always stay ready for the unexpected, especially at higher speeds. And never regret the choices you make, because sometimes, the biggest threat to your own safety is you.
Dry_Inspection_4583@reddit
First thing I did was eat shit off my ridstar middle of winter. Second thing I did was cry like a baby, third, tried again.
You've only failed when you decide to quit, I'm sorry this happened to you, but reflect and make a decision that's best for you.
Sp43C0wb0y@reddit
best thing you can do is get back out there as soon as you feel up to it. the longer you stay off, the more likely you'll never get back on. this is true for just about anything you do where you get seriously injured during it, if you don't get back to it quickly you might not get back to it ever.
if you really love biking, don't tell yourself you never want to ride again. you're going to be alright, you managed to make a reddit post fairly quickly after getting in an accident so i have a strong feeling you'll recover from this. Just gotta push yourself to get back out there, and take it slow once you are out there, don't go ripping at 30mph again right away, give yourself some time to get used to it again.

Resting a broken collarbone from a fall 8 weeks ago. Got caught in a rain storm and the bike slipped out on a paved trail with no warning. Better rain tires were ordered and installed. I’ll be back riding as soon as I’m physically cleared. Riding brings me too much joy to ever give it up!!
