Official star trek directives state that in the case of an Enterprise time travel incident Jancie Rand & William (or Thomas!!) Riker must not be left alone with each other as a temporal "incident" is guaranteed to occur.
I love how in both TOS and TNG the male character that Gene thought was going to be the heartthrob was passed up by the female side of the fandom in favor of the robotic or emotionless character.
Not saying there aren't people who like Kirk and Riker, but in my experience, most people who are attracted to men in the Star Trek fandom vastly prefer Spock and Data respectively lol
Spock and Data are the "safe" crushes. Outside of unusual circumstances like Pon Farr or a weird disease, it's doubtful that they'd even notice, or maybe they pretend not to so they can avoid what would amount to a workplace romance.
At least they only leered at them in these episodes. Unlike Gary Mitchell's creepy hand reaching out to the female crewmember passing by him in the TOS episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before."

Or Data's random having events or his adventures with emotion (where he wasn't even given a leave of absence to figure out).

My mom liked Kirk and her sister liked Spock. My dad is pretty charming, in a harmless way. My aunt’s husband is like Spock, if he were also a jerk.

I joked with my wife that any actor who wanted to be on TNG could be, they just had to fit into the uniform. That's it.
