Yup. It's a reference to an album by the band, also called Genesis.
Anyway, the Genesis port of the first Mortal Kombat is one of my all-time favorite Genesis games. Despite being handicapped with a SMALLER rom chip than what the SNES version was using, Probe still worked their magic. The soundtrack and gameplay was fantastic.
Feel like weâre a rare breed. Went Atari -> NES -> Genesis and then just kinda rode that for a while. Everyone else seemed to own the Super Nintendo and I never felt apart of their traditions. I could absolutely have destroyed them all in Joe Montana Football or NHL â94 though.
I went commadore 64 -> NES -> Genesis -> PC until much later I got a hand me down xbox. I've been a PC gamer ever since though we've gotten the Wii, WiiU switch for the kids (and I might play a bit of those too)
That was the way I went to. Then I got the Sega CD for the Genesis (mistake) and then switched to PC gaming for a few years when I got my first computer but then bought an N64 around '99. Then when the XBOX came out I bought that and I've been playing XBOX consoles ever since. Although I had a girlfriend buy me a GameCube at one point but the only games I owned for it were the two Rogue Squadron games released on the system.
I was a Sega kid. I remember saving up to rent a whole ass SNES just to play LTTP. Had to do it twice because I couldn't beat it in a weekend the first time. Luckily when I did it again almost a month later, I ended up with the same cart, and my save game was still on it! Got to beat LTTP quick, then was able to convince the clerk at the rental store to let me swap it out for SMBW for the last day!
Both, and itâs because I won my SNES from my orthodontist, who held a postcard competition. Whoever sent the greatest # to his office would win. $30 was spent to get⌠1,700 cards (I think?), and we deposited them in their mailbox. I blew away the next closest contestant and even drew a comic on every single one of âem.
SEGA was "cooler", but SNES was the actually winner of this era. Sonic WANTED to be a fast paced radical platformer, but in reality it was clunky and awkward. The sequels never really improved this issue (Sonic Spinball was ironically the best game in this era on that system). Everything else worth playing was on SNES.
My take on how Sonic was perceived in the 90s vs how it actually played out is comically bad? I thought it was pretty milquetoast take by this point in time but I guess not?
Sega consoles were vibes based, leaning heavily into the "extreme" marketing surrounding the speed and visuals as compared to (mainly) Nintendo consoles, but besides having better versions of fighting games the catalogue just wasn't there and time showed us this.
I've since owned all of these consoles (NES, SNES, GENESIS, SATURN, Dreamcast, Game Gear, etc) and really only the SNES and Dreamcast are worth coming back to in this era. There's no denying that you don't want the SNES version of Mortal Combat, that's for sure. But it's hard to argue that Earthworm Jim and Cool Spot were worth having over F-Zero or Donkey Kong Country. It's definitely just a personal opinion, but it's coming from someone with at least some experience comparing these things many years later.
Not to take away from the whole "console wars at lunch" comparison, as that's spot on. That whole "the thing I bought is better" mentality has existed and will continue to exist in every niche interest and escaping it is next to impossible.
I fully agree. I eventually sold mine to a friend who proceeded to download 1000 bootleg CDs - playing those years later was an experience. That system was way ahead of its time. I actually think it has the best version of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 that was released, plus exclusive games were really really good. Also the best version of Medal of Honor: Frontline.
Biggest downside was the ZZZZICK ZZZZICK the CD drive did for 3 minutes every load time, but it was SOOOO worth it compared to the PS1 and N64. It even held its own vs the PS2 for a while in those early days.
Some Dreamcast games hooked up with a VGA cable to a good monitor still surprise me how good they look for their age. Also Virtual Tennis is the most fun co-op/competitive sports game ever.
Yeah I mean, I agree. But do you remember the feeling of betting wrong back in those days and seeing just how much more cool ACTUALLY PLAYABLE games your older cousin had on the SNES? That was the era of buying a game, playing it for 20 minutes and immediately realizing you wasted your money (all consoles had that issue).
It was a time where money was TIGHT and if the rental store didn't have it, you were SOL and had to listen to your friends talk up all the games you couldn't play until you had some free time to stay over at their place and beg them to let you try.
Actually, I think itâs a pretty solid take. The only thing Sonic games had going for them was attitude. Now itâs nostalgia. Theyâre not fantastic.
This is the answer. Mortal Kombat on Genesis had âbloodâ that made me envious for a short while, but I feel like hindsight really validates the SNES as the better choice.
I got a genesis first, played it a few days then realized Sonic and a few other games I had weren't really for me. So I was able to go back to the mall store and return it for a SNES, 100% no regrets.
Genesis.
I was an only child and - probably because I was a girl - I didn't have any gamer friends. That's likely why I stuck with the Genesis for yeeeaaars. It was my only console - and it got regular use - until around 2001, when my boyfriend at the time got a brand new PS2. I got his old PS1.
Imagine jumping from a Genesis to a PS1! I was amazed!
GenesisâŚXmas 1995. I randomly opened a game my sister âboughtâ me before the console. I was pissed thinking she messed up and I wouldnât be able to use it.
At the time, I would've chosen the Genesis over the SNES because it was more "edgy" and they didn't censor the blood in Mortal Kombat. Nintendo was fine for kids - but I needed something more sophisticated. The console wars had fully warped my brain.
Years later, I was able to see how silly that opinion was and admit my favorite games had always been on SNES. Super Mario World, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana... it's the greatest console of all time.
My mom got addicted to video gaming with the original legend of Zelda on NES so we had to have 2 NES, then we had just about every following video game system until I moved out with a ps1. I kept playing regularly and had every PlayStation and Xbox up until about 2015 when my daughter was getting mobile.
I had both at separate times. My Dad was really into games consoles at the time, so he brought the megadrive on launch, and then sold it a while later and got the SNES with the super scope gun.
My childhood friend and next-door neighbor had Sega channel. My best friend who was an additional 50 ft walk had a SNES and we went to school together every morning. I did not like being at home for other reasons, so I'd have been with them regardless but wow do I miss Earthworm Jim.
Both. Although I did get the snes first...I got lucky and ran into someone wanting to sell their Genesis at funcoland while I was looking for one and we cut a deal.
My dad worked hella overtime to get this for me for Christmas. He enjoyed it, too. My mom even loved Sim City. It was gifted to me, but it was for the house tbh. It doesn't work anymore, but I still keep it as a reminder to work through it because the end result is so worth it.
You're my neighbor did have an NES and we would play there. But the problem was they would play hours every day and I would play occasionally, and the rule when we played is you got to play until you died so I lasted for like 10 seconds and then they would play for half an hour while I waited for my next 10-second turn! I was really fucking good at duck hunt though.
Haha Duck Hunt! Yes! Our guns never lasted as I recall we were 0-3 on working dunk hunt guns but 3-0 on Star War looking pretend guns...
I hit a good number for neighbors as it was pretty much just me and his younger preschool aged brother. Most times it felt like the Nintendo was our babysitter. Which is cool.
The set up was in the basement, played a ton of doom II and Duke Nukem down there as well. Watched his mom get a 5 foot black snake & had an epic super soaker fight down there that was a lot of fun & we paid dearly.
Same here. I went atari to Ms DOS games (gorillas.bas editing was my intro to programming) on the Tandy 8086 to the NES then playing at friend's houses until N64. Not even the zelda gold cartridge... cheap ass parents...
Forgot about the old commodore they had with Pacman. Never had info. On coding with it like viewing the qbasic file.
The path where my parents put up a gate and said. "We have an Apple IIgs, and an Apple IIgs has games. Your games will be Apple IIgs games. Only Apple IIgs games."
My mother sat me down and gave me the choice. I chose Sega because I gotta go fast. I think if I had picked the SNES I might be a completely different person.
My parents chose. We had an NES early. My dad always liked the new technology, and when it was time for an upgrade we got Genesis for Christmas. I think SNES is better overall, but Genesis is good!
When I started working my first big purchase was a console, and I went N64. My dad thought I should have gone playstation, and in retrospect he was right.
I went with the Sega. My friend had the SNES. I really didn't care for either, but it might of been the games we had. I already had the NES. I really didn't get anything new until the PlayStation came out.
I was a SNES boy until Mortal Kombat released with no fatalities and sweat. I hustled my little ass off mowing lawns, collecting bottles, begging parents until I could get myself a Genesis with MK in all its bloody glory. ABACABB for life.
Genesis was all about replicating the quarter-pumping arcade experience without the quarters. The snes was about non linear games where you could go back and take different paths after beating the game the first time.
We were goners from a young age. My parents got us each a game boy when we were like 5 and 7 for Christmas so we'd stop fighting over everything and my poor mom could drive us around without us trying to kill each other. We got an SNES with some games for joint birthday/Christmas present when I was 10. The Mario muscle memory is real. I got myself a Wii eventually. I busted it out and hacked it this summer so I could load all my games and stop changing discs. But now I use it for just dance to get exercise in cuz I'm finally losing my metabolism. I gotta see if I can finagle a GoldenEye upload to my card. Damn I forgot I loved that game
Got one for Christmas and worked a season as a ballboy for the local football team at ÂŁ1.50 a game and ÂŁ1 reserve team game to buy the Mario all-stars bundle.
The Christmas i got my Genesis was the greatest of my childhood. Spent all of winter break playing Sonic and drooling over the graphics, specifically the fire and smoke coming out of the smokestacks in the background.
SNES. we would walk by it at Kmart every day. I guess my mom put one on layaway because Christmas morning, there it was. My brother and I played Mario World all Christmas day.
SNES. Has most of my favorite games. Sega had a few that I liked better. Pirates of Dark Water and Krusty's Super Funhouse were better for Sega. Idk if General Chaos was on SNES. But over all SNES is my pick. Zelda, Mario RPG, Final Fantasy 2 (4), F - Zreo, and Mario World are games I still play a lot of to this day.
I convinced my dad to buy me a genesis from the flea market because we were poor. But I beleive my brother had the SNES at some point also with the bazooka.
I went with Genesis and while it's not my favorite system ever I feel like it was the better choice for me. I wasn't really into the Mario games, nor was I into the Sonic games on Genesis for that matter, and just about the only thing that came out on SNES that I really wanted were the Super Star Wars games. I was into the Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest games on NES but they didn't release the SNES games in the U.S. back then so I didn't miss out on those. But Genesis had some pretty good RPGs in Sword Of Vermilion, the Phantasy Star and Shining Force series. And the Genesis got an updated port of one of my favorite video games of all time, Sid Meier's Pirates renamed Pirates Gold on Genesis.
I do regret getting the Sega CD though, besides Sewer Shark most of the games I had were unplayable.
SNES all the way. A Link to the Past is still my favorite Zelda title to this day. My neighbor had Genesis and all we ever played on it was Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam
Sega Genesis. Bought it used for $70 with five games in 1991. A friend from high school needed money quickly. I never asked. Gave it to my brothers for Christmas.
That was a good year. We still have it. It introduced me to the classic that is Streets of Rage 2.
Same. My parents felt like theyâd only just bought an NES and said they couldnât afford another. It wasnât until I was in college that they finally bought me a PS2.
Genesis the Christmas it was released. My best friend and I both got one and were Sega fan boys until we got screwed by Sega CD and 32x. Switched to Sony.
My path was more of a zigzag. I had the NES then jumped to the Genesis and eventually got the SNES. Genesis is still my favorite, it just felt like a more mature system without Nintendo's censoring but they're all great platforms with great games.
I went SNES and it was for sure the right choice, but I was always a little jealous of the exclusives that the Genesis had. I had a few friends that had the Genesis, so that helped keep me satisfied until I was lucky enough to find a Genesis 3 at Toys R Us for $29 when it was on its last legs.
Went back and forth a million times, but ended up deciding on a Sega. I loved it, but in retrospect I think I would have enjoyed the Super Nintendo more.
Snes seems like the more polished console. But I agree Genesis games stick out more. Games like Road rash, the strike games (urban, jungle, desert). Shining force, Ecco and sonic. Even games like splatterhouse... snes would have never released a splatterhouse!
i preferred sega but my mom liked nintendo even though she didnt ever play it. i would play sega at my cousinsâ though. nintendo always felt like a little kids console to me cause they censored mortal combat.
SNES and after a while got Genesis too. Now that I have every game for both consoles and decades of playing them Id still choose the SNES. Just better games overall.
First one then the other. Genesis (with sonic 2 and Jurassic Park Rampage Edition, and then SNES a year later). They were both responsible for some seriously fond memories.
We had both. Sega was for the whole family. SNES my brother and I bought together with our allowances. We were a farm family, my parents paid us well for helping on it.
Genesis. Bought with birthday, Christmas and Grandparent money. Sports games were my jam, NHL 95? Got Mortal Kombat one Xmas, learned fatalities. Great system.
Nintendo all the way. Started with the NES and so far I've bought every console and handheld. I threw in a PS1, Sega Saturn, and PS2 along the way, but everything else has been Nintendo.
I had both, SNES first and Genesis later in the generation. IMO, the SNES best games were better than the Genesis', but the Genesis library had more depth. I loved both.
Neither. I played computer games. My brother (7 years younger) got a... GameCube? I think, later on, and I sometimes played on that, but not often. One neighbor had a SNES and I also played on that 2 or 3 times. I loved Duck Hunting.
SNES for sure. I never got into Sega, and had always been partial to Nintendo. Eventually I got a Dreamcast, far after its time, and kinda feel like that was peak vintage gaming. So many great titles and fun memories.
I watched a YouTube video on Sports Talk Baseball just now, and it looks pretty cool. Like, Nintendo but way better lol Cool seeing actual licensed MLB players' names, too. Looks like fun
We had an NES. got an SNES, Genesis, and Gameboy used shortly before the N64 era. Used the SNES the most. Still have it, but Gameboy broke and sold the Genesis.
SNES. Even better, I bought it, not my parents. I saved up my allowance for months and any extra money I could get my hands on by doing chores for people around the neighborhood. I will never forget the washed out marshmallow creme jar I kept the dollar bills stuffed in. I don't think I have ever loved a purchase more than that one.
Got the Genesis first (plus SegaCD and the 32X adapter) around 1990. I got an SNES with arcade board joysticks around 1994 just for Street Fighter 2 Turbo.
My parents never bought me any of this stuff. Most of it was bought for me by one of my aunts.
Sega Genesis.. only video game console I ever owned. Tow jam and Earl, Sonic, Quack Shot, I donât even remember what else becuase those were all my favorites
Super Nintendo is still one of my favorite consoles of all time, and I have a lot of them!
Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, Super Street Fighter II, and Mortal Kombat II? Literally some of the best games ever made!
SNES wasnât a choice when I had to choose in â89. Then when it came around, no way in hell we would buy another system. All good, made going to friendsâ houses more fun
My family went from NES to Sega. My neighbor down the street went with the SNES build. We spent most of our days at his house. Not because Sega had bad games, but because he didn't just have the games that came with his console.
Let's face it -- Nintendo always had better "pack in" games.
Altered Beast sucked. There. I said it.
Sonic was good, but not as good as Super Mario World.
That said, I was a teenager when I got my Genesis, so I was able to buy a lot more games, and I think Genesis had better variety, but SNES had a better core library.
Got a genesis for Christmas bc my older cousins had one and I loved playing on theirs. Then years after it came out i had saved up enough and got myself a snes after having a bunch of fun playing donkey Kong country on a friends.
SNES but my best friend had a Genesis and we'd rent so many games during our weekend trips. Best of all worlds there for a long time. Ex-Mutants and X-Men games still take me back to those nights.
The grass through the middle leads to my friend's house. He had both and his own TV. My house has a beat up NES and a Commodore 64 hooked up to like a 10" TV.
It was Christmas 1990. Over the breakfast table one morning, Mom mentioned that sheâd been talking with Santa, and Santa was thinking of bringing us a video game console for Christmas. But Santa didnât know if he should bring a Nintendo or a Sega.
I was on Team Nintendo. All my friends had Nintendos. Itâs what weâd always rent from the corner store on weekends. I was already an avid reader of Nintendo Power magazine.
My brotherâŚwanted a Sega. He had a friend with a Sega Master System with After Burner and he was hooked on After Burner.
My brother and I started having a debate. The debate got rather heated. It soon turned into an argument. As the argument was about to turn into a fistfight, Mom broke us up and said, âHEY! If youâre going to be like this, NO MORE VIDEO GAMES!â
And thatâs how we got video games banned from the house.
I had a mom who believed video games rot your brain. I was, however, allowed to play computer games, because computers are for smart people. Not allowed to play Legend of Zelda, but allowed to play Duke Nukem. Boomer mom logic.
My mom tried convincing me to get the Atari in stead of NES. Said i could get more games etc. still went with NES. Stayed Nintendo until Playstation came out. Little brother eventually got a Genesis.
SEGA Genesis.
Pretty sure Sega was less đ°than SNES at the time of my parents buying it, and my parents werenât spending extra just because I wanted it! lol đ¤Ş
SNES here. Played plenty of Genesis at friendsâ houses but I donât know if Iâd be the same person without Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, or FF III
Had snes first in 1992. Then when I got older and started working I bought the slim Genesis. SNES was preferred but the Genesis controller was more comfortable to hold
I got an SNES for my 10th birthday. We went in for a NES but the salesman at Best Buy upsold my dad on the SNES. I could probably still play A Link to the Past by muscle memory.

But the neighbor kid had snes and I would venture my hours logged playing Mario Kart alone would number in the hundreds.
Much later much much later a Sega did land at our house and it too was fun.
So, moral of story, hang in there! age is just a number, it's never too late
AdelleDeWitt@reddit
You're my neighbor did have an NES and we would play there. But the problem was they would play hours every day and I would play occasionally, and the rule when we played is you got to play until you died so I lasted for like 10 seconds and then they would play for half an hour while I waited for my next 10-second turn! I was really fucking good at duck hunt though.
PanchoBaker@reddit
Haha Duck Hunt! Yes! Our guns never lasted as I recall we were 0-3 on working dunk hunt guns but 3-0 on Star War looking pretend guns...
I hit a good number for neighbors as it was pretty much just me and his younger preschool aged brother. Most times it felt like the Nintendo was our babysitter. Which is cool.

I had both, SNES first and Genesis later in the generation. IMO, the SNES best games were better than the Genesis', but the Genesis library had more depth. I loved both.
Mr8BitX@reddit
The Genesis, it seems like the clear choice since it did what Nintendonât.
Funky_ButtLovin79@reddit
Genesis does!

Neither. I played computer games. My brother (7 years younger) got a... GameCube? I think, later on, and I sometimes played on that, but not often. One neighbor had a SNES and I also played on that 2 or 3 times. I loved Duck Hunting.

SNES, but neighbor had Genesis. Win/win

SNES for sure. I never got into Sega, and had always been partial to Nintendo. Eventually I got a Dreamcast, far after its time, and kinda feel like that was peak vintage gaming. So many great titles and fun memories.

SNES. Even better, I bought it, not my parents. I saved up my allowance for months and any extra money I could get my hands on by doing chores for people around the neighborhood. Let's face it -- Nintendo always had better "pack in" games.
Altered Beast sucked. There. I said it.
Sonic was good, but not as good as Super Mario World.
