So i have sport on 24/7 in the background. After about 10pm my time, the only options are NFL, NBA and BA.
I want your arguments to watch a spefic team/follow them across your 3 main sports. I have so many options and no idea who to watch.
Enlighten me, convince me why your team is the one i should commit to, and give these sports purpose for me š
dcgrey@reddit
Versions of this come up a lot and it's important to understand that in the U.S., you don't choose the team, the team chooses you.
"I needed a team, so I looked into it, got some thoughts online, and I chose the Brewers" is, I venture to say, anathema to American sports fandom.
We root for teams we have other ties to (even if sometimes they're tenuous ties). We were born near the team. We went to that college. We dated a fan for a summer and it was the best summer of our lives. "I just needed a team to root for and chose them" gets a polite "Hm, interesting."
So for the UK, you're going to need a tie. Any family near a team? Any place in the U.S. you've dreamed of traveling to?
mbutts81@reddit
I dunno. Iām thinking about this from the opposite direction. Iāve been getting more into soccer and feel like I should choose an EPL team. But I donāt have much context and donāt know where to start.Ā
I can easily see those across the pond having the same dilemma.Ā
ELMUNECODETACOMA@reddit
Play some FIFA or Football Manager and see what team takes your fancy, either as your team or a rival.
That's how I became a Leyton Orient fan.
Disco99@reddit
A lot of US-based EPL fans choose a team based on a current USMNT player. Fulham has had a number of Americans on their roster since the 90s (and still does), so there are a fair number of Fulham fans around.

Also loads of Wrexham fans apparently. Thanks to the Hollywood owners.

Yes! My brother was obsessed with the Broncos during his childhood because our older cousin was also and they had a connection. (I donāt know why our older cousin was a broncos fan. ?) My dad is a fan of all the Texas teams (Cowboys and Rangers) because his older brother went to school in Texas and brought home his fandom. Now my sister is also a fan of The Cowboys because my dad is.
I got into the dodgers because of a boyfriend.
My son is an As fan because his first T-ball team he was on was the As! So cute! Ha!

The Detroit Red Wings hockey club because Paul McCartney put their logo on his acoustic guitar of course.

I always root for my beloved Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins, and Patriots. Not that big into college sports, though I'll root for Harvard when they're on.
Red Sox - Building a solid franchise. We had a good 15 years of incredible game from about '04 to '18. We have fallen off in recent years, though we are steadily building back a strong franchise, especially with young players. Management just sucks ass.
Celtics - Consistently one of the best teams in the NBA. If it weren't for Tatum's injury, I would expect a Title win within the next few years.
Bruins - Middle of the road, though they play a good game.
Patriots - Have never been the same since we lost Gronk and Brady. Hopefully, they can work something out, though I don't know if we'll ever go back to dynasty levels like under Gronk and Brady.

For NFL, follow the Jets. Because suffering builds character and getting what you want will only remove the fun of the chase.
b4rn5ey@reddit (OP)
As a born and bred Manc , who has supported Manchester United since the 90's, this feels like a relevant shout haha
Fantastic-String-285@reddit
The Jets are more like the England team. One shining moment of triumph in the 1960s followed by decades of pain and disappointment.

Nah. You should support Detroit. Weāve never won anything. (Although weāre currently in an alternate dimension where weāre good at football)
ucbiker@reddit
Man U still has the most Premier League titles and you lived to see them in their prime.
Youāre much more like a Pats or a Cowboys fan, someone whose team is past their prime (but isnāt really a joke either) but can still remember the glory days.
You literally canāt know what it feels like to be a Jets fan because teams that suck as bad as the Jets perennially eventually get relegated and are forgotten.

TheyMakeMeWearPants@reddit
I've told this story a few times, but it's worth repeating. I was at a Jets/Dolphins game, and there were two Dolphins fans a row or two behind me. They were getting really confused by our trash talk. Because we don't trash talk the other team. That's not how it works here.
meowmix778@reddit
When I was a kid I was a patriots fan because I grew up in New england. I went down to see them play and was disturbed by how NE fans were treating other fans.
I quit football until my uncle from the Bronx took me to see the Jets. Those rat bastards had Chad Pennington and looked good. Mark Sanchez even took a stab at the playoffs (pun intended) and Fitzy looked FUN.
Every time I met fans man were they good people. Sucked me in this long. Im in. I cant leave. But every time I go to met life I hate it there. The people are amazing and make it worth going to that hell hole

For MLB, follow Mariners NOW. Team has never been to a world series, the only team in MLB to never do so. They are 1-0 in a best of 7 series (need to win 4 out of 7) to go to WS. Haven't been where they are now in a quarter century either.

That is college football. Those are degree-seeking students playing for their universities. In this case, Oklahoma University and Texas University.
Itās a huge deal, especially in the southeast. If you want a narrative to latch onto, Vanderbilt (usually the worst school in its conference) is currently 5-1 this season. They have a gauntlet of tough, ranked* teams ahead of them, but thereās a universe where theyāve managed to go from a joke to a playoffs team in the span of two years.
* i.e. in the AP top 25 list. The various college football conferences are known to be wildly different in power level, so a lot of the organization-wide rankings (including for playoff seeds) are done by shadowy councils that nobody likes or agrees with. Itās a beautiful game.

Green Bay Packers--they're the only pro sports team that's owned by a city. All the rest of the teams are privately owned.

Wisconsin is a relatively small market but the teams do well. The Milwaukee Bucks were doing really well for a few years recently. The Brewers do decently. For a long time the MLB commissioner was from Wisconsin and got a baseball team back in Milwaukee.
I grew up in the far NW Chicago suburbs just over the state line in Wisconsin so I am anti-Cubs and anti-Bears. I grew up with a bunch of delusional Cubs and Bears fans around. (The Cubs winning the World Series in 2016 knocked reality into the bad reality.) The Bulls are fine.
Green Bay and the Chicago Bears have a fun rivalry. Also there's a rivalry with the Minnesota Vikings. The Detroit Lions are just an all-around trash team on the other hand.
When I was a kid in the 90s the Green Bay Packers were doing awesome and the Chicago Bulls were doing awesome as well. The Green Bay Packers have the Packerina.
I feel like my places or my cities in the US are Chicago, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
My #2 NFL team is Seattle. Back in the 90s the winning coach from the Packers went to Seattle and I've kept an eye on them since. Their quarterback a few years ago when they were winning was from the Wisconsin Badgers college team.
For baseball I loosely follow the Brewers and the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals were doing good for a while but the last year or two have been utter rubbish.

The Lions are better than the Packers, so if theyre garbage the Packers are worse. MCDCs record vs Lafleur speaks for itself.

Sometimes you pick a team because something about that yearās team, a particular player, or the team history pulls you in. My husband is a long suffering Browns fan, we do not support the Ravens in this house. In turn, my sister and I grew up with huge sports fans parents and we always rooted for their home or state teams. The Huston Oilers may be gone but we are fans and we always root for whoever is playing against the Tennessee Titans. My dad was from Pennsylvania and his family always supported the Steelers but Iāve kinda been drawn to the Philadelphia Eagles the past few years. We do support our local team unless theyāre playing against our favorites (Browns and Steelers).
Blue387@reddit
I am a Mets fan and we have great broadcasters in Gary, Keith and Ron as well as good cinematography under director John deMarsico. The Mets have Juan Soto who signed the largest contract in all of sports and he is a excellent hitter. We may have missed the playoffs in 2025 but the farm system is producing lots of talent and will contribute to a future winning team, unlike the Phillies or Braves. I am also a moderator of r/newyorkmets and we are always welcome to new fans, we have a few British and European fans.
Being on the east coast, a 7:10 PM game would be a midnight game in Britain but the Mets do play many 1:40 and 4:10 games which would be 18:40 or 21:10 games in Britain. (converted to 24 hour time)

MrPoopMonster@reddit
You'd be surprised. There have been teams that didn't win a single game over an entire season.
The Cleveland Browns won their first playoff game since 1995 in 2021 and then immediately traded away their QB for a sex offender that they gave a record setting fully guaranteed contract to. That guy doesn't even see the field and is complete garbage, while the guy they traded away is balling out for another team.

To answer your latter question, NCAAF is NCAA Football, the NCAA being the National Collegiate Athletic Association ā college football, which is sometimes even more spirited and popular than NFL football and has been, in various organizational forms, for over 100 years.

Seattle Seahawks - worth watching? Theyāre in a rebuild that has been refreshing to watch, but they have a ways to go before they can compete at the top. Premier League equivalent- Newcastle or Aston Villa
Seattle Sounders - worth watching? Yes, theyāre consistently one of the best teams in the MLS and always fighting for trophies which occasionally they do win. Premier League equivalent- First Chelsea stint Mourinho
University of Hawaii football - worth watching? If youāre a degenerate gambler who likes late nights/early mornings. Highly inconsistent on both sides of the ball, wins games on the power of jetlag. European football equivalent- teams from Warsaw pact countries that can steal a point off someone like Tottenham, West Ham, or Villarreal in the Europa or Conference League
Baltimore Orioles - worth watching? If you like watching a team that will sell its best players who are on contracts that are winding down to better teams for peanuts. Premier League equivalent- Crystal Palace

Well now you have questions, we have answers! Texas/Oklahoma is the Red River Rivalry game that dates back to the 1900's College Football. If you live in the Southern US at least on the East side (Florida,Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, TX, etc) You have South Eastern Conference (SEC) Football among others. These boys have been raised to eat, drink & sleep Football from the time they're 3 or 4 years old. The South has weather that promotes the ability to train all year long, as opposed to the North where it snows. It's fun and there are SERIOUS rivalries. Alabama/Auburn, Florida/Florida State, usually based on where you went to college. Wear the wrong color to the wrong house on game day and there could be a fight!!
Bargle-Nawdle-Zouss@reddit
NFL: any team BUT the Dallas Cowboys. Self-anointed "America's Team" with an egotistical tyrant as their owner. I revel in their suffering. Pick the Detroit Lions, an up-and-coming franchise with a coach that has united this LONG-suffering team and city.
NBA: the two most successful teams are the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers, so they don't need more fans. The Golden State Warriors have Stephen Curry, and are usually very entertaining. The San Antonio Spurs - a small-market team - are coached by Gregg Popovich, who has long had a team-oriented approach, rather than catering to the egos of individual stars
MLB: the New York Yankees are the most successful team in baseball, far and away. The easy analogy is that they're the Manchester United of MLB, with a long history of championships and legendary players. How you feel about United will likely color how you react to the Yankees. My suggestion is the St. Louis Cardinals or the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds were the first fully professional baseball team. As for the Cardinals, they were the westernmost team until the MLB expanded to California in the late 1950s, and so they were the default team for well over half of the USA. St. Louis is a real baseball town whose fans live and die with their team, and the franchise also has a long history of success.
GeneralPatton94@reddit
The Detroit Lions. They're the most fun team in the NFL to watch because of the play style they have on offense and they've never won a Super Bowl but have a team that is a contender. If you start watching them right now you might be rewarded with a Super Bowl Championship win this year or in the next few years.

I donāt follow sports but my father made sure I was a Cubs fan. Now Iāll tell you the saddest story I know. He was an obsessive fan. Watched every game. His favorite childhood game was kind of an early version of fantasy baseball. I had to learn it as a kid. Even his online handles were obscure Cubs players.
The Cubs were known as lovable losers for decades. For most of my life their last championship was 1908, the same year the teddy bear was invented. In 1945, when obviously a lot of players were still serving in the military, the Cubs made the World Series and wouldnāt do it again until 2016 when they won the whole thing. I can remember these dates very easily because my father was born in 1946 and died in 2015. After 1945 everyone talked about the billy goat curse. Nope, my dad was the curse. His entire life he followed the Cubs and never once got to see his team in the World Series.
Follow the Cubs to honor my father please. I cried in 2016 when they won and havenāt been able to since.

My favorite sports/teams in order:
Los Angeles Angels (Baseball): A great team to follow if youāre writing a suicide note and experiencing writerās block.
Los Angeles Kings (Hockey): Have you ever wondered what would happen if you personified the concept of blue balls and put them in ice skates?
San Francisco 49ers (Football): A storied franchise. If the time zone proves to be an issue you can go visit the trauma ward of your local hospital and put football pads on patients relearning how to use their legs after horrific injuries to get the same current experience.
Los Angeles Lakers (Basketball): The most successful team on this list by far and helps drown out the voices in your head brought on by the other teams here while only occasionally adding to them. Also fans of other teams have to consciously stop themselves from throwing beer bottles at your head for belonging to a fan base thatās like 60% insufferable dickheads so donāt take it personally when a guy in a Suns jersey wings one past your ear. You can only respond in kind if theyāre wearing a Celtics jersey.

The championships for Major League Baseball are happening through the end of the month. Over the next 10 days the LA Dodgers will play either the Chicago Cubs or the Milwaukee Brewers (decided tonight) for the National League Championship, meanwhile the Seattle Mariners will play the Toronto Blue Jays for the American League Championship. Then the two champions will play in the World Series.

Well, as of this moment, many teams suggested have multiple recommendations, but only one rec for the Denver Broncos. I'm not "from" Denver but I lived there for 45 years. Their team this year looks really promising. Denver Broncos fans are thee definition of diehard fans. The Denver Broncos are my team. I'm not a big football fan, my sport is baseball, and the Rockies are a pitiful team with shitty owners. The owners of the Broncos are in it to win it, and I'm all for that! The New York Giants are a young team with a rookie quarterback, Jaxon Dart, and a tough as nails rookie running back, Cam Skatteboo.. NCAAF is college football! I find college ball more entertaining than the NFL, because of the traditions, rivalries, and general chaos. You have students vowing to eat dog shit if their team loses to another team. Then you have the curse of that student disappearing off of the face of the earth, and their team going 2-10 that season.
I wanna know your thoughts on the Oklahoma v. Texas game lol. It's called the "Red River Shootout" and is one of the bigger rivalry games every year.

NCAA football is better than NFL in my opinion

Detroit Lions! Theyāre the biggest comeback story in the NFL right now. If you want to support a team and be ahead of your European friends in terms of bandwagoning the Lions are a good pick. Weāre a lively team with a great story and awesome fans

Chicago Cubs: baseball team, have a postseason elimination game tonight. Entered American folklore for not winning a championship for over 100 years, then won a championship.
Wisconsin Badgers: associated with the University of Wisconsin, many sports teams here of varying quality. Basketball is solid. Football is not. Women's hockey is fantastic.

NCAAF is the National Collegiate Athletic Association And the F is football. Itās college football which is my favorite to watch. So there is another option. Iām for the Indiana Hoosiers who havenāt had a consistently good football program since maybe the 1960s. Until last year they hired Coach Cignetti who has turned the program around and we are finally winning. Have fun watching whoever you enjoy.

Atlanta Braves for MLB. Oldest pro franchise of any sport in America. Theyāre consistently good and occasionally break through for a World Series championship. This year was tough with injuries, but they have some exciting young star players, most notably Ronald Acuna Jr.

~~I really like the Eagles~~ Whoa who said that?

There are actually 4 major sports so I think you should first find which you enjoy the most. From there you could pick any that speak to you. I know the NFL markets heavily in the UK so possibly whichever does its best to build a local fan base.

Yeah unfortunately i don't get a lot of NHL on my platform. I've been. To a few UK equivalent games (obviously not the same standard ) but its something i just dont seem to have access toon

Baseball just ended but I support the Boston Red Sox. It's one of the larger fan bases that play in the oldest ballpark, Fenway park. We had a young team this year but looking at a post season run coming next year. Our owners do own Liverpool FC so there is some success but enough struggle and frustration that comes with it.
NFL, I support the Commanders. They are on Monday night this week. They have a young quarterback, Jayden Daniels that looks to be the next thing in the NFL. We recently came out of 25 years of bad ownership and getting a new stadium by 2030. We did make the NFC Championship game last year but it's been an abusive relationship for most of my life.

My folks are from NY/NJ and I was 8 years old in 1996. So I grew up a Yankees/Giants/Devils fan. Iām becoming a Yankees/Jags/Panthers (NHL) fan. If you become a Jags fan, thereās like 70% chance Shahid relocates them to London anyway

Football- Dallas cowboys and Tennessee vols. I like them because Iām a sadist who likes being disappointed
Basketball- warriors and Tennessee vols. I liked Steph when he was in college and I like Tennessee because, again, I like disappointment lmao
Hockey- the Tampa bay lightning simply because I moved to Tampa bay lol

Honestly, I found my favorite NFL team because my husband and I had weekly dates at a local pizza/beer place that had the NFL ticket, so they could tune into every game played on Thursdays, Sundays, and Mondays, regardless of where it was being broadcast.
So in the table area they had about eight screens playing various games, and Iād just watch whatever caught my eye as we ate a pizza and drank a pitcher.
I discovered over the weeks that I dislike the Raiders because they get so many flags called on them, and I really liked the dynamics of the Baltimore Ravens! Like, no matter who they played, the Raiders would get a lot of flags and the Ravens would have some very exciting plays.
My husband likes the Carolina Panthers, and I always ask him āwhy??ā ;) mostly because I like watching good teams play, and if they lose a lot in the beginning of the season they donāt play a whole lot overall!
Honestly, though, Iād be remiss if I didnāt mention that part of the draw of the Ravens is that they were named after the Edgar Allen Poe poem, and I am 100% a hurdy-durdy-wordy literary lady, and I like that a pro sport team has roots in American antebellum poetry š

MLB: Astros: probably not worth following. They were really good for a long time but seem to be on a downward trend. Also they are tainted by a cheating scandal (although it's worth noting there is only one player from that era still on the team).
NFL: Texans: cursed, snakebitten franchise with a stupid name. They will either be good on defense but unable to score points, prolific on offense but equally bad on defense (admittedly it's fun to watch shootouts even if they lose) or just bad at everything. On the other hand they're still the newest team in the league so maybe that sounds fun, getting into something new and I accomplished.
NBA: Rockets. They're young, lots of intriguing young guys and a good coach. They also swung a trade for Kevin Durant during the off-season who is one of the best to ever do it but also who is older and possibly declining. Still, an exciting team. Could be fun to get into.

Well I'm a biased son of Boston so GO RED SOX. Yeah I know we lost the wildcard slot so uh...go BLUE JAYS!

Milwaukee Brewers for baseball and Green Bay Packers for football.
The Brewers are a small market thatās often overshadowed by the much larger ones, no matter how well they do.
Packers are one of the oldest teams in the league, and the only professional team thatās owned by the city.
bloopidupe@reddit
Honestly all three teams for Wisconsin are a solid choice.
Flimsy_Security_3866@reddit
Each team, sport, and city is going to be unique and have their own history. It's kind of hard to convince someone to be passionate about one of our teams unless you have some kind of reason or link to the city. The typical popular cities are New York and Los Angeles but it's up to you. What would be funny is you ask this question to Americans and you start following a city that has both a basketball and baseball team and it ends up being Toronto.

For NFL teams who were bad the last few years that are starting to show signs of improvement, check out the Jaguars, Colts, Giants, and Patriots.
Nothingās more fun than seeing an underdog team rise the ranks before others jump on the bandwagon.
