Getting Shingrax vaccine next Friday. Kinda scared of getting sick for a day or two so scheduled on Friday.

How long does it take for side effects to begin? I know an allergy reaction is within 15 minutes, but how long does it take beforeit starts making you feel like you have a cold etc if it does?
Grand_Taste_8737@reddit
Don't sweat it. Most people in know had no reaction to either shot.
ConspiracyParadox@reddit (OP)
Good to know.
Salt-Path3779@reddit
I had shingles, flu, and Covid on the same day. I felt completely fine, not even a sore arm. Just my experience but not everyone has a major reaction. I’m terrified of shingles so whatever effects OP may have, shingles would be 100 times worse. Good luck!
Broad-Chemistry-1120@reddit
You go girl! My doctor told me to do the flu and shingles and wait and get the Covid a bit later. I’m glad, but would have also been fine with all 3. I did have a strong immune reaction to shingles vax. 3-4 days of body aches. Better than having shingles.
Russian_Doll_888@reddit
Did shingles, pneumonia and flu all in the same day. Sore arms, but no reactions or symptoms. 24 hours later I got really tired, but just took a nap.
austin06@reddit
Some of us react a lot to vaccines. You are unusual. And lucky.
IHAYFL25@reddit
I got flu and shingles shots yesterday. Sore arms is about it.
lissabeth777@reddit
I did flu and Covid together a few years ago and it was not fun. Felt like crap for a day but it took like 3 weeks for the lump in my arm to go away!
No-Commission-8159@reddit
Doing Covid, Flu, and RSV on Thursday
delulu4drama@reddit
I’ll see your three and raise you a pneumonia vaccine 😉 like you said, so much better to get them all out of the way at once
LoHudMom@reddit
Same! I did have some pain and swelling but it didn't bother me. I felt fine. I had some trepidation about getting all three at once but I'm glad I did it.
Adept-Elderberry4281@reddit
Brave!!!!! I almost did this in September when I got flu and COVID but I chickened out!!
Broad-Chemistry-1120@reddit
I had about 4 days of flu like aches all over. Just get it done. I’ve seen a lady have shingles cover her entire face and arms. It was awful looking and it’s supposed to be pretty painful.
3-4 days of body aches is nothing. Suck it up and just get your vaccine. Go back in a couple of months for your 2nd dose.
Corpsman_USN1980@reddit
I had no problem. The science is there. Shingles sucks!
subibrat85@reddit
Get it in the arm you sleep on the least.
Jean19812@reddit
I would take a Tylenol beforehand, and strap a cooling pack to your arm right afterwards...
Jujulabee@reddit
I had no side effects except a slight sore arm for a day or two.
Eulers_Constant_e@reddit
I’m curious for those of you who had little to no reaction — how bad did you have the chicken pox as a kid? Both shots kicked my butt for at day and a half. I’m talking on the couch, violently shivering, achey, the whole bit. But I also had a severe case of chicken pox as a kid. I always wondered if it’s related.
Russian_Doll_888@reddit
Interesting. No reaction to Shingrix, other than needing to take a long nap, and I don't think I had a severe case of the chicken pox. I had it but don't recall it being bad.
blackpony04@reddit
My shingles shots didn't bother me at all, other than having a sore arm for a few hours, like it feels getting the tetanus shot.
I have no memory of having chicken pox as I had it fairly young (under 7 per my mom). I wonder if age could be the correlation?
Eulers_Constant_e@reddit
I was 5 when I had it. It’s just interesting to me how people have such a wide range of reactions. I wish mine was a milder reaction, but I’m also thankful for the protection against shingles.
I was born in ‘73, so I did not receive a small pox vaccine. When I had chicken pox is was so bad they thought it was small pox. I had pox literally everywhere (under my eye lids, in my throat). My mom says it was painful just to look at me lol. So I wasn’t going to take any chances with shingles. I got that shot the second I was eligible.
bethmcseaver@reddit
I didn’t have chicken pox as a kid, even though I was at several ‘pox parties’. The first dose of the shingles vaccine knocked me on my ass for 48 hours. I’m due for the second shot in December.
CJK_Murph@reddit
If you didn’t have chicken pox , you can’t even get shingles. I’m surprised your GP advised to get the vax.
bethmcseaver@reddit
There is the possibility that I had a such a minor case of pox it went unnoticed. Since I am now immunocompromised we thought it best to be safe
Eulers_Constant_e@reddit
Good luck with the second dose! I hope it goes easy for you!
LeatherAppearance616@reddit
That’s an interesting connection, I asked my mom about our chicken pox and all she remembers is it was early summer after a pox party and it sucked for her because three of us kids had it at once. She has no recollection of our experience, lol. I just remember standing on a chair getting painted with calamine. I had very little reaction to the first dose of shingles vax, one shitty day after the second.
Vegetable-Lasagna-0@reddit
Interesting, I had a full blown week of chicken pox as a kid. Just did shot one of Shingrix and I slept the entire next day and my arm was still sore 4’days later.
huskerpat@reddit
I had both shots in the last 3 months. The only side effect I had was a sore arm for about 4-5 days after each shot.
ptm93@reddit
This was me as well. Maybe a little more tired than usual.
Russian_Doll_888@reddit
Same here. Just got really tired the next day and took a long nap.
SanJacInTheBox@reddit
I got both shots in the spring/early summer and felt like crap for the weekend afterwards on the first, but only was tired the second time. My grandmother had shingles and it damn near killed her, so I'm not taking any chances!!
WVStarbuck@reddit
Had my first shot a couple weeks ago, and same. Sore, red arm for 3-4 days, that's all.
tinglingearballs@reddit
Same for me. Sore at injection area for only a day. That’s it. 2nd shot Nov. Don’t expect much from that one either.
MarcusAurelius68@reddit
I had a fever spike for each but beats shingles, which my wife has.
Jmazoso@reddit
It’s fine. Sore arm after both times. The Moderna Covid shot kicked my ass both times.
ASillyGoat@reddit
I'm fine, but holy carp I had it rough for a couple of days. I got the shingrix and pneumococcal combo. Do not recommend. Started feeling shitty about 6 hours after the shots. Fever, everything hurt. The air blowing on me hurt. Still beats the alternatives, but fuck me, was rough for a couple days. Vaccines just do not like me.
shihtzu_knot@reddit
I also got mine on a Friday. Exactly 24 hours later, I got the chills and couldn’t keep my eyes open. Took 25mg of liquid THC, slept for 14 hours, and woke up feeling fine. It sucks but shingles sucks more.
will_maxim@reddit
TL;DR - get one vaccine at a time.
I had no issues with the first Shingrix. But when I got the second shot, I also decided to get a flu shot. The pharmacist warned me that I might experience muscle and joint soreness, etc. I rarely get side-effects, so I took both shots. Twenty-four hours later, I had aching in joints I didnt even know I had. Misery for nearly two days. I'll never combine vaccines to save time again.
RestlessRoadWarrior@reddit
I got it years aga and dont remember any side effects at all.
BasketBackground5569@reddit
I keep hearing that the second shot is the one that kicks your butt for a few days.
NorthFLSwampMonkey@reddit
Drink lots of water before a for a day after. It made a huge difference for me.
Koumadin@reddit
i had full body aches 12 hrs after my 2nd dose lasting about 8 hrs. nothing with the 1st dose
better than shingles tho
Choice-Education7650@reddit
No side effects from it in our house.
doveup@reddit
Piece of cake. Forgettable! I had shingles before getting the vaccine soooo painful. Off work for three weeks. and could have gotten it again ! Bot noooo. I then got shingrix and later the two shots of zostovax. Zostovax is said to be more protective. I wonder why you’re getting the older vaccine. But good on you for taking care of yourself!
ConspiracyParadox@reddit (OP)
Idk, it's what they offered me. How is zostovax better?
doveup@reddit
I don’t know. It’s newer and my doc wanted me to get it even though I already had the Shingritz.
ConspiracyParadox@reddit (OP)
I googled it. Shingrix is better. I wouldn't trust your doctor.

I would pass
UnrealizedDreams90@reddit
My first dose was no problem. 2nd gave me major body and joint aches the next day.
Wife's first dose made her feel like she shingles inside her stomach area for a couple weeks. 2nd dose was no problem.
No_Arugula_6548@reddit
It’s not bad at all. Just try to hydrate before and after. Seemed to help me. I never got sick or hot a fever or anything. Just sore arm.
CriticalStrawberry15@reddit
Round 1 - comparable to flu shot Round 2 - don’t make plans for 48 hrs
Chemical_Author7880@reddit
You’ll be fine.
You know what isn’t fine? Shingles.
My partner is a little younger than I am and wanted the vaccine and was told nope had to wait.
Then he got shingles. It was a nightmare and he is still dealing with some of the longer lasting impacts.
Get. The. Shot.
ConspiracyParadox@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I'm gonna be starting a med that is immuno supressive, and they want me vaxxed up first. I had very mild shingles last year. On 1 armpit. But I don't want a severe case.
Chemical_Author7880@reddit
Good luck to you! I have a congenital immune disorder (diagnosed later in life—it explained a lot) and take a immunosuppressive for an autoimmune condition issue.
So every shot is a balancing act between monthly IgG infusions for the busted immune system and immunosuppressive shots for autoimmune disorder.
No fun but more fun than not managing it!
johndoe3471111@reddit
It all depends on the person. Both of mine were super uneventful. I didn't get sick at all. Other people I know it kicked their ass for a day. Either way still better than shingles.
TheSaltyPelican@reddit
The only thing that I felt when I got my shots were a really warm spot on my arm at the injection site. Other than that, nothing. No side effects for the first and second shot. My suggestion is to get your shot just before your weekend just in case you do feel bad, that way you're not stuck at work feeling bad.
MommaGuy@reddit
The worst I felt was some minor body aches. I have felt worse after having 3 drinks.
Character_Cupcake856@reddit
You'll survive and you'll be happy shingles won't visit
pquince1@reddit
I did mine on Friday too. With the first one I had a sore arm and just kind of dragging that night, but was fine on Saturday. No side effects. With the second, I didn’t even have a sore arm. No effects. I got lucky.
correct_use_of_soap@reddit
totally random. Second one knocked me out more than the first one. Be ready to take a day to rest.
LeatherAppearance616@reddit
It is so random. My sister and I got ours on the same day, I had a day of being on the couch feeling too feverish to enjoy the down day, my sister didn’t even have a sore arm. Second dose I was mostly fine, she was knocked out for the day. Then this years flu shot took me out for some reason despite never having any reaction at all to previous flu shots. 🤷🏽♀️
Live_Firefighter972@reddit
I was the exact opposite! Just had my second one two days ago and I've been symptom free ever since.
JustMeOttawa@reddit
I had both shots earlier this year, no symptoms other than a sore arm for a few days. It was worth it for me as some of my family members had very bad cases of shingles and they told me to get the shot! Of course, I can still get shingles but the severity would be WAY less.
ljinbs@reddit
I was tired for half the next day. Also, someone told me to move my arm around like I was throwing a baseball. It helped the sore arm. Overall, I was fine.
PatienceandFortitude@reddit
I had both this year and was worried but it wasn’t bad at all - sore arm for a few days, one day feeling a little tired. That’s all. The second for me was no different from the first.
wayne1160@reddit
My wife had shingles in her left eye. You do not want shingles under any circumstances. Get the vaccine.
paolohu@reddit
How about just don’t get it
mlebrooks@reddit
Just got my first shot 2 weeks ago. I started feeling kind of achy that afternoon, then the fatigue hit later that night.
It was weird. I would shiver like I was cold, but the sensation of a blanket on my skin was too much. It wasn't debilitating, just enough to be tired and annoyed.
My arm was sore, but I had a huge hard lump around the injection site for 3-4 days.
I was completely fine 48 hours later.
I'm going to take the following day off after my 2nd dose and stock up on comfort food/drink so I can just sleep it off
DaisyDAdair@reddit
You’ll be fine.
broohaha@reddit
I think I took it at end of day, and I felt like shit the next day and started feeling better the day after that. It didn't help that I also took the flu and COVID vaccines at the same time. Trifecta. I don't recommend.
cathearder1@reddit
I usually have no problems with flu vaccines. Covid hit different, but with the 1st dose of the shingles vaccine, I felt tired and nauseous for 3 to 4 days after. I got it on a Monday. The next morning, I puked on the way to work. You were wise to get it on a Friday, just in case. The 2nd one wasn't as bad.
Ok-Commercial-924@reddit

It’s going to be better than shingles! Also, get a colonoscopy, it’s pretty fun, after the procedure you feel wonderful! The first thing you eat is magical, I promise.
Bookssportsandwine@reddit
I got flu and covid shots at the same time as my shingles vax. I had a light headache about five hours later. Deep body aches through the night were the worst of it but once I got over my stubborn self and started taking Tylenol, it helped a ton. I felt better by mid day the next day, just a bit weak. The second day after I was fine with just a bit of arm soreness.
IAmLazy2@reddit
Getting my next Sunday. Dithered about it and finally decided to go ahead.
Unlikely-Solid-3083@reddit
Just got my first one less than 24 hours ago. My arm is a little sore in the spot where the injection was but other than that I feel absolutely fine. I was worried, too. The guy who gave me the vaccination at CVS was wicked nice and then I got a small bag of cheese popcorn and a coupon for $19 off a $20 purchase. Lol.
Glockenspiel-life32@reddit
So, I have shingles right now. Doctor told me I can still get the vaccine so it won’t come back.
She told me to go get the vaccine on a Friday because there could be some reactions.
I would prefer to spend a weekend feeling a bit shitty compared to spending about 2 months so far with actual shingles and it’s not done yet.
Agamenticus72@reddit
I just got my second shot two days ago. I have Only had a sore arm so far.
Open_Mortgage_4645@reddit
You should be more afraid of getting Shingles. That shit is awful. Several weeks of excruciating pain and no sleep. The shot is better no matter the potential side effects.
YramAL@reddit
Scheduling on a Friday is a good idea. I didn’t have much reaction, but my coworker did.
Key_Shallot_1050@reddit
This must be the week for Gen Xers to get the shingles vaccine. I am going in on Tuesday.
Dawner444@reddit
Thankfully, my only side effect had with both was a sore arm. Everyone is different, but it is definitely worth it because I had shingles once and it was no joke.
Wildflower_76@reddit
am am f49 and currently having issues of the shingle for the second time. I wish I had gotten vaccinated the first time I got it. ANyways now I have to wait a month AFTER it get better before I can get the shot.
There are 2 shoe required, 6 months apart for like $150 a shot
IMAKENNEDY@reddit
Research just came out, today I think, that you have a 17% less chance of getting dementia if you have a Shingrix shot. Whoop whoop!!
nobody2008@reddit
Got shingles and pneumonia vaccines at the same time. It was fine. Weirdly enough I felt great after the COVID shot last month so maybe they are injecting me with some experimental stuff who knows.
LavenderSpaceRain@reddit
My Mum and husband: zero problems. zero side effect.
Me: 2-3 days of wanting to die.
Sooooo...ymmv.
ElixirChicken@reddit
Same here. My husband went for a 18 mile mnt bike ride the day after his first shot. I called into work sick and thought I would have to go to the emergency room the day after my first shot. I kept asking my husband if I was dying. Lol! However, I just had my second shot a few weeks ago and .... nothing.
traveling_gal@reddit
I got sick from the second shot more than the first. I got it on a Friday afternoon and woke up around 3 AM in misery, so maybe 12 hours for it to kick in. Miserable all day Saturday, ok on Sunday and back to normal by Monday.
ConspiracyParadox@reddit (OP)
How so? low grade fever I'm told is common. Tired? Sore?
traveling_gal@reddit
Yeah, flu-like symptoms. Fever, headache, and body aches mostly. Totally worth it to not get the shingles, obviously!
NellieArvin@reddit
I never had side effects with my Shingrix vaccines.
Dawgy66@reddit
Mine started about an hour after the shot but I'm immunocompromised so it's gonna affect ppl like me a little different than normal healthy ppl.
ConspiracyParadox@reddit (OP)
Im gonna be starting a biologic in January that will suppress my immune system so they want me vaccinated first. 3nd shingles shot in mid December Im guessing.
AccomplishedCash3603@reddit
Same, I'm terrified. How long were you down? Typical flares last 3-4 days for me. I get crazy if it's more than 4 days.
Dawgy66@reddit
I was down for about 3 days with flu like symptoms, except the sinus part. Mostly body aches, chills, etc but thats normal for me with any vaccination shot, I always get those symptoms. I'm a liver transplant patient so my anti rejection meds may play into it too.
emgra43@reddit
I’m also immunocompromised. I had my second shot Thursday, by mid morning Friday (yesterday) I had mild flu like symptoms - chills and felt achy. Today I’m much better, just tired. My rheumatologist had to write a rx for me to get it because I’m not yet 50, but since I’m taking a JAK inhibitor she didn’t want me to wait to get the vaccine. The first shot was the same for me, mild flu like symptoms. I expect I’ll be fine to be back at work on Monday.
PinkyLeopard2922@reddit
I got zero side effects with either dose but I generally don't get any with flu vaccines or covid vaccines either.

I had no problem with either shot, other that a sore arm. Hubby had same with first shot, after his second shot he had a headache then at the 18hr mark, he was freezing cold even with a heated blanket on a beautiful summer day. Gave him tylenol, he napped and was fine when he woke up, but kept the tylenol every 4 to 6 hours for the rest of the day. Just like we did with our kids when they got their shots
ConspiracyParadox@reddit (OP)
That's not too bad.

Alemya13@reddit
I think this may be a case of everyone being different. I did the typical Gen X overachiever thing and did shot 1 + flu + covid at once. A little sore for a day or two, a little tired, that’s it. But I’ve been hearing those who have a good shot 1 have a rough shot 2, and vice versa. I did a couple Advil before I went in - and will do it for shot 2, too!
oldcreaker@reddit
2nd shot can be worse. But neither was bad.
EstablishmentOk5478@reddit

julesyhedgie@reddit
Don't fret, it's minor. I don't think the side effects are flu-like. I just had a sore arm after a few hours and tiredness for the next day or two. You scheduling the injection on a Friday was a good idea but I would have called in sick to work instead. 😁
Adorable_Bag_2611@reddit
I went to bed a bit earlier than usual because I was tired. Woke up feeling like I got hit by a bus. I had it on a Fri, just in case.
So for me it took overnight. I was back to normal, but slow, by Mon. But Sat & Sun were hell.
To be clear though, I get a migraine with the covid shots, feel like gentle crap after a flu shot…like I have a cold level. So my body does tend to be dramatic about vaccines.
I would still do it rather than have shingles.

This times 💯- I got shingles two years ago, just finished my second dose two weeks ago. Each time I got it on a Friday afternoon, started feeling poorly overnight, sick most of Saturday, feeling better mostly on Sunday. Shingles knocked me flat for 3 weeks. So excited to have immunity.
Unlikely-Section-600@reddit
I had only a sore arm from shot #2, first shot easy peasy
Step_away_tomorrow@reddit
I wasn’t sick at all but my arm was sore for a week both times. Still worth it.
paigeken2000@reddit
Problem is that you don't know if 1st or 2nd shot will knock you out. Good luck.
SnowblindAlbino@reddit
No big deal-- I had a headache and was tired the next day. Fine on day two. The second shot, which people said would be worse, was about the same.
FAR better than getting shingles.
sjmiv@reddit
Sore arm was the only side effect I had
Stonerkittylady420@reddit
I never had any side effects. Maybe hurt arm from the shot but nothing else.
Mango1250@reddit
My arm hurt immediately and by late evening was down for the count with flu symptoms for 2 days. Husband had nothing.
After the 2nd shot, we had the reverse and I was fine but husband was out for 2 days sick. I have a few friends older than myself (57f) that had absolutely no effects, but I’m never that lucky with any vaccine shot.
Glad we did it - just stock up on whatever helps you get through a 2 day flu bout just in case.
MajYoshi@reddit
You got this. Just like you've learned to deal with every other thing in your life.
The Sacred Hose taught you. Own it. Accept it.
Really it ain't so bad. Just rest up and move your arm often.
I was worried too on my first. It was nothing but a little pain. But we know pain, don't we? We understand it. We tell it to fuck right off, don't we?
Because that's what we do. We are GenX. We look at discomfort and pain and say, "Whatever, bitch. Fuck you."
jeffster1970@reddit
For me, the next day I could barely move my arm, and it felt like Mike Tyson had pounded on it for a week straight. Pain was gone in a couple days, and I could move my arm again.
Massive-Ant5650@reddit
I was dead for 2 days .. lol. But now I won’t get the horrid ick & that’s ok
Flaky-Marsupial-1319@reddit
Get the vaccine. I had it…, But I still got shingles. That is very, very rare. It is very protective against it… But I can tell you that shingles is the worst. In my case, it attacked a large nerve coming out of my spine… And wrapped itself around my abdomen where the nerve innervates my abdominal muscles. It was the most intensely painful experience of my life. And I’ve had some painful shit.
chowmushi@reddit
Mine lasted 12 hours, if that.
Free8619@reddit
I only had a very sore arm.
temerairevm@reddit
It’s really not that big of a deal. For me it takes 8-12 hours and I feel sort of bad but you know why and you know it won’t last long. So you just stay home and binge tv and maybe take Advil/ Tylenol. In 24 hours I feel fine. Usually it’s not worse than a Hangover.
General_Ad_6617@reddit
I don’t recall any reactions but the standard sore arm. Good luck!
mippymif@reddit
I had no side effects.
itisISdammit@reddit
Had Shingles and Covid vax yesterday. Body aches today and my arm feels like it was hit with a baseball bat, but otherwise I'm fine. You got this!
Dangerous-Art-Me@reddit
Basically nothing but a sore arm for me
VirginiaBluebells@reddit
I got Shingles, flu and pneumonia on the same day. Other than sore arms, I was a little flu-like the next day for about 8 hours. I would have forgotten about it until this post reminded me.
desertblaster72@reddit
It took 24 hrs for my symptoms to show up. Flu like. Then that lasted a day. Both shots.

I felt like I had the flu for 3 days. The second shot was much easier.
kwahoo5@reddit
Getting it on a Friday is a good move. My wife and I felt mild symptoms about 6 hours later, then felt pretty crummy that night and all the next day. Started to feel better the day after that and felt almost normal the third day after the shot. YMMV
beccabebe@reddit
Any experience the rare side effect of vertigo w their vaccine?
Got my second shot Thursday morning. Felt great all day. Friday morning I wake up feeling great - until I stood up. Absolute shit show of pretty severe vertigo. Never had it before. Couldn’t sit up for 2 days. Had to crawl to the bathroom. Couldn’t roll over in bed. Felt like my brain was melting out of my head and my eyeballs were bouncing around in my skull.
Once the worst was done, and the nausea subsided, I’m left on day 9 with pretty bad lethargy ( boneless and tired feeling. Slowly getting better but that was some scary shite.
Called the Doc about 5 days in. They said as long as I didn’t have a severe fever or wasn’t at least getting a little better, to just wait it out.
Wouldn’t trade this experience with having shingles, tho.
I am someone who gets motion sickness when the wind blows hard so maybe that’s why I got hammered like that. 🤷♀️
Get ‘er done!!!
IndyColtsFan2020@reddit
I got it on a Friday morning. By Friday afternoon, I started feeling weird. After work, I just couldn’t stay warm and was shivering even under an electric blanket. By late evening, I was better and was fine the next day.
I had zero issues with the second injection.
greeneyedsparrow@reddit
Got the shot in the morning. Super sleepy by 7pm and went to bed. Had the best sleep and woke up with a sore arm and kind of tired that next day. No sick feeling at all. Same scenario with shot #2.

I just got mine two weeks ago. I did but get sick, but it made me arm sore like no vaccine has before.
No-Commission-8159@reddit
You won’t feel it until later on that day / evening depending what time you get it
The injection site may hurt a little but - you will feel tired / rundown the next day
It abates after about two days
Uncle_Brewster@reddit
I’ve had both shots. Didn’t get sick at all.
LariRed@reddit
It’s minimal compared to getting shingles that’s for sure. The first shot laid me out for two days with flu like symptoms but by Monday everything was back to normal. Second one was much the same but for 24 hours. For me it took 24 hours to feel symptoms from the shot but I knew it was just my immune system ramping up.
Premodonna@reddit
Drink a lot of water the day of and take a high dose of B12. It will help reduce the symptoms.
OutOfContext-1901@reddit
Take a Tylenol, drink a LOT of water and add Benadryl at bedtime.

I remember it being a lot like a Covid vaccination. You feel like crap but you know why you feel like crap and it'll be gone in a day or so.
djak@reddit
I got my 2nd shot this past Tuesday. Low grade fever and general feeling of yuckiness lasted until Wednesday evening. Pretty much how it went with the 1st shot. Arm is still a little sore today but very minor. It's way better than getting shingles though.
Stop_The_Crazy@reddit
In two weeks, I'm going to have my jaw fractured from the outside of my face so they can remove a wisdom tooth that's sideways in my jaw and the cyst around it. And a molar, too, I just found out. Then I'll have a plate installed to hold my jaw together. I will be drinking gravy through a straw on Thanksgiving with my jaws wired shut for 8 weeks.
In preparation for this surgery, they gave me a course of antibiotics to take. It not only killed the bad bacteria, but the good as well, and I ended up in isolation in the hospital over my b-day in September basically with dysentery for 3 days. Had to have a colonoscopy. I threw up all that anal drain cleaner they gave me to prep for it.
That was a 78k detour down the Oregon Trail. All to remove a wisdom tooth.
Now getting a shot won't seem so bad.
itgoesineasy@reddit
The first shot did nothing but give me a sore arm for 3 days. The second shot gave me what felt like the worst flu I’ve ever had but it only lasted about 12 hours. Totally worth it to not get shingles. I had a minor case on my side and it was so miserable the shot side-effects were worth it.
areacode212@reddit
I got mine + the flu vaccine yesterday (almost exactly 24 hours ago, 7:30pm). I also scheduled it for a Friday because we're supposed to get a Nor'easter this weekend so if I'm going to be laid up in bed, might as well be on a weekend with shitty weather.
Soreness at the shingles shot area arm started 3.5 hours after I got it and it started to hurt when I lifted my arm. But I lift weights so the soreness didn't really bother me all that much (it's still a little sore right now but I barely notice it)
The low-grade fever (not sure if it was from the flu or shingles vaccine) started about 13 hours later (roughly 8:30am). It basically knocked me out for most of the day. Just lay around feeling miserable, ate and drank some stuff.
Felt well enough to go out around 5:30pm. Still feel some chills and stuff but it's not so bad.
Same_Holiday7799@reddit
It will hit you like a truck but you'll be back in business after 24 hours. 2nd shot will be similar but of a lesser caliber 😬
SouthernCanuck673@reddit
I just had a sore arm for a day after each shot - 58F

Yeah I didn’t get that sick feeling from either of the two shot dose, which is strange because I always feel horrible after a Covid shot!

Do some pushups as soon as possible after the shot. I got this advice after my first shot and my second one didn’t hurt nearly as bad having done some pushups within 5 minutes of the shot.

Got it Friday afternoon, felt REALLY bad most of Saturday, but by Saturday night was better, had a cocktail and felt fine on Sunday. Same with the 2nd one. Good luck!
LoHudMom@reddit
Is this the first or second shot? My husband and I were both fine after the first shot.
I also got my flu shot & covid booster at the same time-figured I'd condense the misery. My only regret is not icing my arm-the nurse gave me the covid and Shingrix in the left arm and it was pretty sore and swollen. But I didn't feel unwell at all.
I get the second shot in mid-December, and since he was down for two days after his second shot, I am expecting similar.
Nice_Point_9822@reddit
Last year I got my Flu, Covid booster, and Shingex #1 on the same day. That night was rough but besides the sore arms I was fine the day after. YMMV
Icy-Violinist5865@reddit
First dose gave me a fever and out for a day. Second dose - completely nada
JustWatchingthefun01@reddit
I was just a little tired the next day on the 2nd shot I had a low grade fever that night for a few hours but felt fine the next day.
AZJHawk@reddit
I got mine mid- morning and started feeling crappy around dinner time. I was feverish that night - just like the flu - and got a terrible night’s sleep. I still felt feverish the next morning, but by mid-day, I was pretty much back to normal. My arm hurt for a few days, but no worse than a flu shot.
So, for me it was a mildly rough 24 hours or so.
TheLawOfDuh@reddit
Your arm feeling like you got punched is the more annoying thing. Feeling a bit flu-like for a day or two happens but it shouldn’t prevent you from working. Just know it’s the body’s natural response, it’s doing its job and is only temporary. Mine lasted just over 24 hours. It oddly ended for me after sitting down to watch tv after dinner -just stopped all the sudden lol
NewPresWhoDis@reddit

Drink plenty of water before and after and you should be OK.
Bookies_Bookclub@reddit
First, I'm glad you're getting vaccinated. Shingles is not fun. For the most part, I didn't have any weird side effects from getting the shit other than a sore arm. I guess I'm lucky.
Sungirl8@reddit
Make sure the doctor knows your entire medical history, first. I’m a hugely pro vaccine but there is a small percentage that can get very ill with it. I’m a boomer, so hopefully the vaccine has improved but I have a make friend who broke out in severe shingles afterwards and still suffers. My girlfriend, also older, ended up in the hospital and still suffers from side effects.
If there is no history in your family, it’s very unlikely you will need the vaccine IMHO, as a former assistant nurse.
That being said, I have long Covid so the omicron variant Covid vaccine has literally saved my life. I couldn’t be healthy without it. I also owe my life to the pneumonia vaccine and the RSV vaccine because I have pleurisy of the heart and lungs so I can vouch for those vaccines. Life savers 🥰
kkbobomb@reddit
Has anyone else had shingles and then got the shot? I had shingles twice already but just recently turned 50. Wondering how it’ll affect the side effects.
Artichokeydokey8@reddit
I got mine at 6pm. Felt fine until the next morning and had body aches through out the day. They would worsen when the ibuprofen would wear off. I also iced my arm to lessen the soreness. By Sunday I was fine just a little tired.
rabidstoat@reddit
Day after for me. I never felt sick or had a fever but my arm hurt, a lot, and for over two weeks. My second shot wasn't as bad.
Marigold1976@reddit
I did not have any problem with the vaccine. I vaguely remember going to bed early but probably used the vaccine as an excuse to peace out:)
Early80sAholeDude@reddit

Aromatic-Ganache-902@reddit
Smart to do it on a Friday! I did both mine on Fridays and I was glad for that. Both times I felt gross after---I got chills and felt like I was coming down with the flu, slight sore throat and body aches. Both times it lasted 1-2 days and by Monday, I felt fine. The area on my arm where I got the shot hurt like a mutha for about a week though. The second time, that spot was red for a few days. If you can, pop a few Tylenol and you should feel a little better. It helped me sleep because my body aches were the worst at night when I was trying to sleep and that helped a lot!
MamaMayhem74@reddit
I got shingles at 46 (I was under enormous stress). As soon as I was able a few years later, I got the shingles vaccine. I'd take the shingles vaccine any day over shingles itself. You'll be a little sore and feeling slightly lousy, but it wont be too horrible.
Live_Firefighter972@reddit
I had my first one in June and it was a bear. Sore arm, sore lymph nodes, fatigue. Had my second one on Thursday, and nothing...barely a notice and I was worried it would be worse than the first one. You'll be fine.
chunky694@reddit
No side effects from either.. except a sore arm which started about 12 hours after injection both times.
Fatal-Eggs2024@reddit
I only felt a bit of tenderness at the injection site, like a bruise. Didn’t notice anything else, but nobody told me I was supposed to feel bad 🤣
AdOk7488@reddit
Omg I got shingles last year and my skin is still healing. It wrapped around 1/2 my body. I could barely sit in a chair. The recovery is 4-6 weeks. I regret not getting the vaccine.
p001b0y@reddit
I got the Shingles and Covid booster the same day and I also picked a Friday just in case. I ended up having chills about 10 or so hours later and basically had flu-like symptoms for about 24 hours. The shots were in the same arm and the pain from it, which isn't uncommon with vaccines, prevented me from being able to put any weight on that arm or move it much without it hurting pretty badly.
The arm pain lasted through the weekend but was better on Sunday vs. Saturday.
In a couple months, I'll get a second dose for shingles and a flu shot. Ha ha!
I had Covid for the first time almost a year ago and I have not fully recovered from that. Chronic fatigue/post-extertional malaise symptoms remain. I had these before getting Covid but they got worse post Covid and have not gone back to my previous 'new' normal.
gumyrocks22@reddit

mittenknittin@reddit
I started having a headache and chills about 12 hours after the vaccine, just in time to go to bed and sleep off the worst of the side effects. I still felt a little crummy the next day, but as people here are saying, so much less of a problem than actual shingles.
anxious_differential@reddit
Just f-ing do it. I did and it is no big deal.
I've also know people who have had shingles. That's worse.

i had the same fear - so I got the vaccination on a monday so at least I would spoil some workdays instead of ruining my weekend!
Good_Nyborg@reddit
Keep drinking lots of water and eat right too. Move that arm around a lot and get some semi-decent exercise yourself throughout the days.
All it did for me in that case was make me feel slightly nauseous a couple times, and those passed rather quickly - I never even did the "sit by the toilet cause it seems close" position.
Good luck!

Second one, I don’t really recall anything other than a little lack of energy the day after.
Nothing drastic either shot.

Supposedly most people react to the second shot. Not I. I had a horrible reaction to the first. The injection area was red and warm to the touch for several days. I was sick with flu-like symptoms for 4 days. Lots of couch and tv time. I’m dreading the dose.

1st shot I got in the afternoon, the next morning I felt pretty rough and called in sick and spent the day on the couch. So I was really dreading the 2nd shot. Worried it would be the same or worse but I got it yesterday and aside from a little bit of a sore arm I feel pretty great. And im super relieved to have it done with. It varies so much person to person, and shot to shot. Really hard to predict.

I was doing a bunch of vaccines last fall for travel and did the first Shingrix then promptly forgot about it. When downloading my inoculations after a tetanus shot this summer (was due after 10 years) I saw I didn't have the second. Got it that day.
