Wallet gun spotted at gun show

Didn’t Ian do a video about something similar to this years ago? I told the seller that I’m REALLY SURE this was an NFA violation, but he didn’t seem to give a rats ass
FoeTeen@reddit
Like all NFA laws, this being classified as an “AOW” makes zero sense. You can put on a jacket and fire a revolver from inside the pocket just as easily if not easier and it’s even less conspicuous.
FoeTeen@reddit
I think these were designed to be used with the grips off the High Standard, which is why it’s printing like that.
chauchatbob@reddit
Yes they are. They’re an AOW. The number of dumb shit sellers at shows I’ve seen is amazing. I see 1-2 sawn off .22 rifles at every show and they’re just like “oh it’s a pistol now, see the stocks now a grip” like I wish it worked that way but no.
Annual-Emu-445@reddit
wait it doesn't work like this? pardon my non american ass but i thought that no stock = not a rifle
chauchatbob@reddit
If it’s ever been a rifle it can never be a pistol.
Annual-Emu-445@reddit
holy shit nfa is even dumber than i knew :D
CoyoteDown@reddit
Isn’t that backwards? I thought a rifle can become a pistol but then it can never become a rifle again
Clay_Allison_44@reddit
Nope. There's not a single shred of sanity to it, but AR "pistols" have to be tracked separately at manufacturers to specify that those are "pistol receivers" despite being identical.
SloCalLocal@reddit
This is the hidden truth of American jurisprudence.
ThatDjAWK@reddit
Literally definition of AOW, like 4th image I’m
intrusivesurgery@reddit
Can you explain why it's AOW? I know the word but I'm super ignorant to gun laws
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
Because it’s a “disguise weapon” it’s like having a pen gun or a cane gun
chauchatbob@reddit
Yep. Any weapon capable of firing when disguised is a AOW. If it doesn’t “look” like a gun it’s NFA.
No_Elderberry_8211@reddit
If I stick a gun in a sock is it now an AOW because I could still pull the trigger and it no longer looks like a gun?
chauchatbob@reddit
It’s all about intended use and function. Sticking a pistol in a bag or sock is fine. Doing so to intentionally conceal it as a gun and using it would be no.
Foresthowler@reddit
Stupid question probably but when it comes to "lunchbox guns" like the FPC I believe it's called that Magpul recently released (the semi-auto FMG-9), are those not AOWs because when the gun is ready to fire it's not "disguised"?
gunmedic15@reddit
Those are SBRs, not AOWs. Stock and less than 16 inch barrel.
chauchatbob@reddit
Yes correct. Those, braverman pen guns, cell phone guns, life cards etc.
Foresthowler@reddit
That makes sense. I was always curious how the Lifecard wasn't NFA.
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
Because you can’t fire it in the folded position, when you unfold it to fire it it vaguely looks like a gun
Foresthowler@reddit
That makes sense. Thank you!
TrippingOnGinger@reddit
Does that mean the Life Card .22 is also considered and AoW?
Harrythehobbit@reddit
The life card has to fold out into a gunish shape before it can fire, that's why it's not. An aow has to be capable of firing in the disguised form.
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
No, because you have to unfold it to fire it, and it resembles a gun when it’s unfolded
RedEd024@reddit
Which state?
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
Florida
RedEd024@reddit
Of course it was
ATF-Is-Gayy@reddit
I’ve actually detail stripped one of those derringers, it was double barreled 22 WMR. Pretty neat design!
gunmedic15@reddit
That is for sure an AOW.
My local prison had these in inventory and sold them as surplus several years ago. I had the hook up and bought one right when the AFT letter came out on them being AOWs. I didn't know enough about all things NFA back then and tossed it.
I'd buy that one, STFU, separate them, and Form 1 it in January.
Fun fact, the prison actually used one to shoot an inmate who was holding a nurse hostage. The warden put it in an old fashioned chewin tobacco pouch and offered the inmate a chew when they were negotiating. Negotiating over.
Harrythehobbit@reddit
Would you mind giving the name of the prison? That's a really interesting story if it's true, but it kind of sounds like fiction.
SchroederWV@reddit
I’ve been told the same tale from growing up in West Virginia.
CPaille94@reddit
That's a crazy story about the warden. What a guy. That has to be the most "Backwater Montana County Sheriff" thing I've heard all day.
TopHatGorilla@reddit
Anyone else want to negotiate?
gunmedic15@reddit
I think it was The Shootist with John Wayne when somebody tries to rob him and he goes like "here's my wallet... LIL SOMETHIN EXTRA!" and plops him with a derringer.
Organic_South8865@reddit
You posted about this before right? I remember reading about this before.
gunmedic15@reddit
Yep. The person who taught me to gunsmith was the armorer at the prison. He worked at a gunshop with me and had the inside track when they sold surplus guns. I own the .22mag derringer and a revolver from there.
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
How would the form 1 work? Am I registering the wallet and putting a serial number on that or is it the gun that I’m registering?
gunmedic15@reddit
I'm pretty sure the gun and serial is registered. The determination letter is out there somewhere.
Menacingrayt47@reddit
learned a lot reading through the comments. lol
tykaboom@reddit
If there was more of the gun visable it would be fine.
The desantis pocket shot I had had the slide and mag release exposed and that was enough.
This is 100% an nfa item.
Not like it should be... but whatever.
Don't be a snitch.
Hour_Tone_974@reddit
Is it ? The gun and wallet are separate pieces making this an exsposed trigger holster I'd argue
tykaboom@reddit
Up to the interpretation of a judge and the atf unfortunately.
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
I’m definitely not a snitch. I was warning the guy about it so he didn’t get in trouble, but he didn’t seem to care.
warpedaeroplane@reddit
Yeah these and like the NAA belt buckle guns are no bueno. However, you can still get a Hi-Standard Deringer for like $200 so you got that going for you.
ThetaReactor@reddit
The NAA belt buckle is just a holster. You can't operate the gun while it's inside it. Likewise, the little wallet-shaped holsters for P32s and such are legal, too, because you have to draw the weapon to use them. This guy is only verboten because of the hole in the middle.
GaegeSGuns@reddit
There are agents that patrol those shows so Im not sure he’ll be selling that for long
kcmexipacn@reddit
You'd be surprised how much most those agents give not one damn about small guys. Ive seen a lady come into a show with a duffel full of cut off double barrels and shit and the cops told her take it all back home and dont say a word..
GaegeSGuns@reddit
Cops as in local police or the actual ATF
kcmexipacn@reddit
They both work the shows off and on duty. See em all the time
GaegeSGuns@reddit
Yeah Im saying actual ATF wouldn’t let that one slide
kcmexipacn@reddit
The most cops and atf do are avoid more paperwork. Gotta realize unless its been used in a crime or is real scary they really couldn't give a damn. Been told that from many a mouths. There's old guys that have traveled all over and picked up some really hard to find original pieces of history and the rarities and have never had an eye batted. You gotta really be a peacock for the feds to mess with you. We had a dealer local to me that got caught up in a sting but he was dumb and selling "Phone holders" as he called them. Was selling switches out of his shop. Story dropped then his brother took it over and moved it all online rather then brick and mortar. Was a shit show to watch that.

So someone's bought the rights to manufacture the old High Standard Derringer? About thirty years ago, my local Sheriff carried one as a BUG. He quit when he got tired of having it fixed.
Two shot of .22 Magnum; they used to advertise it as the safest derringer because it needed a double-action pull to fire.

First off, don't talk so loud.

Very cool!!

Also, my mistake, it was the yankee marshal that did a video

Due-Gur-2208@reddit
accidentally canoes the Wendy's cashier because I picked the wrong wallet
Worth-Sorry@reddit
I think he could avoid breaking the law if instead of selling a gun with it, he'd just sell the leather piece, calling it a pocket holster for a gun and call it a day
skyXforge@reddit
So many reasons this is a bad idea
FuddFucker5000@reddit
Interesting.
