Help identifying a magazine

I’m at a gun show and saw this magazine at someone’s table and they weren’t sure what gun it goes to, I’m guessing maybe a grease gun but I’m not sure. The square hole in the back of the magazine makes me think it was modified to fit a different gun.
My_Hobbies7481@reddit
Hmmmmm, very interesting.
I'm not sure, could it be a Polish WZ. 39 Mors magazine?
That's the closest I've managed to get.
Bigironstonks@reddit
That cut out in the back reminds me of the Volunteer Enterprises Thompson variant they made. Where a regular Thompson stick mag wouldn’t work on those, they made a Thompson model that had an enclosed magwell and it caught on the back with a large hole/square cut like this one. Though the top looks like it’s too small for a .45 acp cartridge, could just be the photo. It’s definitely not a standard magazine for any Cobray or Mac style sub gun/pistol but I’ve seen some really off the wall modified ones. The mag catches on Mac mags only required a lip for the mag catch to hold on, not a cut out like this one has.
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
I can tell it’s not that Thompson copy, because the mag for that one has whiteness holes on the side of the mag
That1guyDerr@reddit
When you do this, I think you need to get us a full 360 examination of the mag, from top, bottom, right side, and front, not just the left side and back to go off of.
Either its a Beretta m12, Colt SMG 9mm, Italian m38, a homemade magazine

M12 is a double-stack double-feed and the feed angle is down at the front, not up.
The M38-family used a double-stack, double feed with a nose-down feed angle and a tab at the rear for holding the magazine.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlZd1fIEHMo
Colt AR-based SMG uses a double-stack, double feed with a side-notch for the magazine release.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwhCl8VdYh0
I bet the magazine is likely from an older gun like the M38, but I haven't figured that out yet.
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
I checked and it’s not an M38 mag
Accurate_Reporter252@reddit
I still think it's that era of guns--1930 to 1955 or so--but the tabs to prevent over-insertion, the overall length of the implied magazine well, and the position of the magazine release get me.
Accurate_Reporter252@reddit
If the large rectangular hole in the back of the mag is the mag release catch and you don't have some sort of giantism, the indexing tabs on the side means it's not a magazine fitted through a pistol grip because the catch would be below the grip and the grip would be extremely short. So, it's not a MAC 10/11/etc. or Uzi or a converted pistol.
The length between the catch and the index tabs implies a relatively long magazine well. So it's definitely not a Thompson, but like a Thompson, the magazine catch would be below the magazine well and not through the magazine well.
The magazine appears to be a double-stack single feed and not curved. Odds are it's not a 7.62mm Tokarev, 7.63mm Mauser or other highly tapered round which would usually be curved.
It doesn't have a reinforcement plate at the top, so not a STEN or M3 Greasegun.
There's an upward angle at the top as well. Not an Owen SMG.
We're looking for an older SMG, probably 1930's through 1950's--that isn't a converted assault rifle, that feeds from the bottom with a significant forward magazine well and a magazine release below the magazine well. It's not likely to be a top or side feeder or in a tapered cartridge. there's a lot of space vertically that would be inside the gun and below it, so it's not going to be a pure-tube-like design. We also don't see any round counting holes or other openings as well for the majority of the rounds.
It's likely to be a commercial or smaller military design because it's not a more standardized magazine like the STEN/Sterling family, the MP5 family, or any of the Soviet made guns. It doesn't look like a shop-made or improvised model but it also doesn't seem to have a maker's mark unless it's on the baseplate.
Any chance you can show us the baseplate and/or follower? Maybe tell us which calibers it fits? Looks like 9mm P, but 7.65mm French is also a straight-walled round and would fit in the time era we're looking at...?
AntiqueGunGuy@reddit
We are looking for something with a tilt like a Glock mag but not as extreme. I can’t think of anything off the top of my head
Accurate_Reporter252@reddit
The problem is the magazine catch hole is lower than the tab on the side to keep it from being over-inserted.
So, the Wilkinson Linda used a double-stack, single feed magazine with about the right angle...
(29) Wilkinson Arms "Linda" - YouTube
But the over-insertion tabs are way too far down (and the magazine catch notch is not on the back) because it's a through-grip design.
For the magazine to be a through-grip design, the grip would be very, very short and the magazine release would be a couple inches below the grip.
So, a magazine well that's deep--like an AR--but with a rear magazine catch lower than the magazine feed... like a Thompsom.
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
Sorry, I didn’t get more pics, but I looked all over and didn’t notice any markings anywhere on the magazine, including the base plate
pistonsnob@reddit
I'm not entirely sure what it is, but we can eliminate the followning:
not an uzi, mac, or any gun that has a mag fed through the grip. The overinsertion stop on the side is too high up and wouldn't allow proper seating.
it's not an AR9 or Colt pattern mag, nor some kind of single feed variant. The magazine catches are not correct.
What I can say is that whatever it is, it goes in a gun that has a pretty deep mag well.
There is a chance it might be a weird PCC conversion mag unique to a very specific conversion, like some weird AK conversion or AUG conversion. I'm not versed well enough to know which, but damn it, we'll figure it out.
Jaded_Laugh_5352@reddit
tec 9 mag?
Accurate_Reporter252@reddit
TEC-9 magazines use a tab to hold the magazine in and are significantly narrower at the front than the back.
https://youtu.be/O9TIMRFJW6E
Jaded_Laugh_5352@reddit
yea i noticed after i posted
Dylan24moore@reddit
My first thought was a grease gun but like others have said it doesn’t have the extra material at the top half. This one might have to go straight to the big boss
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
Does Ian actually mod this sub or no?
Historical-Count-374@reddit
Sten mag
Accurate_Reporter252@reddit
Magazine catch hole is BELOW the tabs to hold it in place and most STEN mags have a reinforcement plate around the top.
Also, the feed angle on the top of the magazine in the picture is angled too "nose high".
Historical-Count-374@reddit
Oh good eye!
ButteredDingus@reddit
I think the beretta 1938 has a single feed double stack mag
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
I checked Ian‘s video on that, and it’s not a 1938 mag, I’ve checked virtually every SMG I can think of and none of them match this one 100%
Shark737@reddit
PAWS 9mm?
Taolan13@reddit
that big square cut on the spine makes me thing it's an ingram magazine?
Accurate_Reporter252@reddit
Ingram Model 10/11 have the reinforcements below the magazine catch.
The Ingram Model 6...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-tNlBiz_w0
Double column, double feed, and the mag-catch is not a hole.
tetronom@reddit
shape resembles an extended glock mag but i never held a real firearm in my life so i cant know for sure. the tilted construction possibly implies that its supposed to be fit in a handle, maybe something like TMP or PM-9. A quick google also reminded me that AR-9 pattern guns exist which use a similar shape. Kriss vector also uses a similar magazine, maybe an aftermarket version.
oldcaptiantwerky@reddit
Mac 10, probably 9mm version
Boring_Classroom_482@reddit
MAC or similar platform copy. 100% certain.
FoxholeFoggy@reddit
Seems pretty similar to an SA-26 mag that I have, but I don't think it's that. Perhaps for a related firearm?
MassiveProgress1259@reddit
Looks just like a MAC11
justaheatattack@reddit
the important thing is....
how much?
Memerman69Xx@reddit
Mac 10 or Uzi.
Vanguard_Arms@reddit
Def not Uzi. Mac 10
Memerman69Xx@reddit
You sure? How can you tell?
Vanguard_Arms@reddit
The "nubs" that index the mag at the bottom of the magwell and prevent over insertion are much lower on Uzi mags. Not sure it's a Mac 10, but looks to be 45 and is my best guess
LeadnLasers@reddit
Definitely not a Mac 10/45 the latch cut out is lower than the stops
Memerman69Xx@reddit
Oh cool, I didn’t know that. Good to know, thanks.
rextrem@reddit
Uzi mag is a proud double feed mag.
dirthawg@reddit
Not uzi
SKMC_1999@reddit
Maybe a M3 grease gun mag?
ValuableUseful7835@reddit
At first I was thinking m3 greaser but they have a reinforced piece of metal around the top
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
Do you think it could be an aftermarket grease gun mag?
ValuableUseful7835@reddit
Possibly but probably not
SolidPrysm@reddit
Doesn't look like it. I can see the resemblance, but not that closely.
TacTurtle@reddit
That green mag in the background looks suspiciously like painted SGM Saiga mag.
DarthScabies@reddit
Suomi M-31?
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
I googled that and almost every World War II era submachine gun mag I could think of and none of them seemed to match
LeadnLasers@reddit
I can tel you with certainty it’s not for a:
Sten Tac-1 Mac 10/45 M3 Thompson
Crunkyblamf@reddit
Seems like an actual forgotten weapon( part). Rare for this sub. Still early, though.
Bag_of_Richards@reddit
Oooh boy that’s the stendo for a mobile brrrt brrrt aka ‘gobrrrrrt’
ValuableUseful7835@reddit
Kinda looks like an old COLT 9mm pcc mag. I feel like all the Mac and Uzi mags I've seen had more data on them (witness holes and round count numbers)
gunmedic15@reddit
Those were double column feed, this one is single.
Laftenpoopt@reddit
Arisaka? IYKYK
Virtual-Fox@reddit
Looks like a Sten mag
GamesFranco2819@reddit
I see you back there Bren mag
srivatsa_74@reddit
just throwing something out there, maybe a MAC-10/11 or Spitfire .45?
Ok_Elevator5612@reddit
That what I would be my guess
Snopro311@reddit
Mp40?
DarthScabies@reddit
Any markings on the bottom?
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
No markings on it anywhere
Ss13_Shitcurity@reddit
MP9 magazine?
bigpuzino@reddit (OP)
Like the Steyr TMP? It’s definitely not that.
