How the hell is it not related to ibertarianism?. Is libertarianism not a political ideology? Is this not a political post? Seriously, I am so tired of people who seem to only claim to be libertarian so they can act like pretentious turds and tell everyone else how non libertarian are. It's like they have a picture of themself at home titled "the last true libertarian on earth ." Seriously, get over yourself. We get it you're so edgy and different than everyone, and we're all just athoritarian statists blab blah blah.
So sick of people acting like if it is not directly about monetary policy or anarchy capitalism, then somehow it's not something libertarians should ever discuss. I swear some of these supposed libertarians are as toxic and useless to discuss things around as the actual leftists on this forum.
I’m hungry for steak and get served a salad. When question this the waiter says “How is this not a steak? Steak is a food. Is salad not a food?”
I don’t see how me questioning this post is pretentious. Obama hasn’t been president for over 8 years now. And him being awarded by some committee for war crimes doesn’t infringe my freedoms. It discredits the peace prize, but, like, what else? I’m seriously just wanting a better explanation if you have one.
Like I said libertarianism is a political ideology. Part of defending and supporting it is discussing it alongside other ideologies. Some libertarians only seem to want an echo chamber where everyone just jerks each other off talking about how great anarcho captialism is.
Half the posts here are just people trying to out libertarian each other accusing the others of not being "real libertarians". They act like they are only allowed to discuss a very limited range of topics.
Obama getting rewarded a peace prize for being a war monger is a slap in the face to people truly supporting peace, so yeah, pointing out that is perfectly in line with non interventionism and libertarianism.
I reject this notion that all libertarians should concern themselves with is a very limited list of issues with everything else being g some "distraction." Then we scratch out heads wondering how the left has hijacked every major institution and somehow still wonder why nothing ever changes.
How are any of the posts hating on trump viewed as libertarian? I don’t care for them but funny how it’s okay to criticize trump but not Obama and sleepy joe.
The correct answer is Theodore Roosevelt (United States)
Nobel Year: 1906
Position: 26th President of the United States (1901–1909)
The Philippine-American War. Which coincidentally was a war he inherited from his predessor much like Obama inherited the Afghanistan War from Bush.
. Based on US military actions that occurred during Theodore Roosevelt's lifetime, particularly the Philippine-American War, it is estimated that hundreds of thousands of Filipino civilians were killed by Americans through violence, famine, and disease. Roosevelt served as president from 1901 to 1909, during which time the brutal conflict continued.
Filipino resistance: The Filipino revolutionaries, led by Emilio Aguinaldo, had fought alongside American forces to defeat Spain, believing it would result in their independence. When the U.S. Senate ratified the treaty and annexed the islands, the Filipino nationalists felt betrayed and resisted the new occupation.
War atrocities: The conflict was brutal on both sides. U.S. forces committed atrocities, including burning villages and employing torture, while Filipino fighters tortured captured soldiers and terrorized civilians who cooperated with American forces. An estimated 200,000 Filipino civilians perished from violence, famine, and disease.
Shift in U.S. foreign policy: For the U.S., the acquisition of the Philippines signified a dramatic shift from isolationism to imperialism. The war and subsequent occupation sparked a political backlash from anti-imperialists in the U.S. who argued against expansionism.
He was nominated after a debate on reparations, in which he gave a stirring speech on why they need to let it go and led the no team.
He literally was nominated for avoiding a race war.
Immediately after having the nomination accepted it became politically incorrect to be against reparations so that was dropped, and today his the reason for his award is literally “we don’t have to tell you why”.
I heard some of the reporting on what the nobel committee values and one of the items was helping to maintain the world's democratic order.
Obama's election returned the United States to it's more regular place as a reliable leader and country in that world order.
It may be that his accomplishment was just defeating the Republicans of the time who were internationally seen as destructive to general peace and prosperity in the world.
It's very possible that should Trump's regime be defended democratically and a peaceful transfer of power occurs that the new president could win for the same reason as Obama.
Ok so he was nominated before all/ a lot of the drone strikes that he was responsible for, you'd assume then that they based his nomination and win off of his campaign and previous time in government rather than his time as president.
The deadline for submitting Nobel Peace Prize nominations is January 31st of the award year. Nominations must be received by this date to be considered for that year's prize. Submissions made after the deadline are included in the following year's discussions.
Obama entered office in January 20th of 2009, and was awarded the prize in 2009.
He won it for getting elected. Imagine being so cool, people just give you shit. Here's a Nobel peace prize. Can we be friends? We just want to hang out a little after the presentation.
Yea. Paris threw an "American day" party on inauguration day for Obama. Paris. For an American president. It's crazy how well liked he was. And to OPs point - that slowly declined as Obama kept the US in war with civilian casualties. Now I think most US sentiment is against him, which is a crazy turn of events.
Didn’t democrats hold Obama accountable a lot of the time though? I know I sure did. There was a lot of policies I was against. The difference is accountability. You don’t have to attach your identity to the sitting president, he’s not God, he’s just another person in power. You don’t even have to attach yourself to one side. I lean more democrat but I also have conservative values that I believe in.
Let’s put everything aside and hold this guy accountable for once. Move on to an actual Republican or Democratic president that wants to help everyone equally, and remove political representatives that don’t.
We have more power united. We control the government and our future, it’s not supposed to be the other way around. With all this hate, have our lives gotten any better under this administration? I don’t feel it.
I'm not a libertarian, but I know a good handful in real life, and they're really great people who I really respect. I disagree with some of their views, but their stances are typically incredibly well supported and they're people I really look up to and have been inspired by. And then I go online and every libertarian is like 8 years old.
Obama really lives in your guys head rent free lol. Grow up, Obama isn’t the problem here, you are. Take accountability and fix your issues instead of blaming people who aren’t even actively involved with the government.
Came here to say this. As a liberal, I liked Obama as a person (well composed, charismatic) but I am not oblivious to what he did and am not afraid to criticize him for it.
To think, if Trump would’ve won it he could’ve taken this record from Obama. Or not. We will never know because his first administration stopped releasing that information.
