The planet is going to do fine well beyond humans. The question isn’t whether the planet is going to be here. The question is whether it’s going to be livable for people, or any other type of life that we currently have. And the answer that is more than likely no. We are such a selfish species and we have become so reliant on the capitalistic consumer economy that there doesn’t appear to be any other way aside from a mass extinction event to stop the impending disaster. The ocean currents are already changing, which we know is going to have dramatic effect on weather and only time will tell how accurate they are with their models as far as warming goes, but if they’re right, we aren’t that far off from a mass die off because I believe the number is something like 5°C and we’re around 1.5° now with us gaining another 2/10 of a degree Celsius per decade. I truly hope that the nay sayers are right and this is just a cycle and the planet will begin to cool again soon. But all of the data suggests that they are incorrect and the human intervention is pumping way too much in the atmosphere to be ignored and it is having a dramatic effect. It’s very hard for humans to see beyond what’s right in front of them and understand a larger trend over a long time span. I’m always reminded of the politicians that walk into chambers with snowballs and throw them at people, using the current weather in their area as evidence that a global trend doesn’t exist. This view is ignorant and shortsighted, and only adds fuel to the fire on the opposing side instead of allowing for an intelligent conversation with facts. I don’t think we will see anything super dramatic in my lifetime besides weather continuing to get more extreme. I’m guessing I have maybe another 40 years, but I’m mourn for the life that my children and grandchildren will lose or never get to know because of the greed of our generations and the ignorance that has been allowed to flourish due to social media and toxic political discourse.

What was the plan to save it? Honestly they’ve never made sense during my life. Shut down industrial plants , coal industry, nuclear, pretty much everything, but still be completely reliant on those same processes for daily life. EVs are generally a net negative environmentally with the mining process , wind as well , solar is ok with battery storage which again gotta dig the earth with fossil fuel machines, create crazy runoff and have lithium that can be a huge problem fire wise and long term storage. In the west we just pledged a ton of money and blindfolded ourselves and acted like China is in a different environment somehow. Opening a new coal plant weekly, using slave labor, mining the absolute F out of areas of their country and places they decide to claim which has created some interesting events geologically. Plying water wars with neighbors all sorts of stuff and all without any of the same regulations. It’s been so bizarre to me.

A dude made a hydrogen powered car 40 years ago than ran on water, that seems logical if it could work could also deal with any rising ocean level in theory. Our plan was to survive or solar, wind, some gas, but also shutdown all the operations that make what’s needed and instead get it from China. Brilliant really.

I also wonder how much we could actually affect the climate. It’s been way hotter and way colder through history and well before any industrialization.

I am a disease detective (not US praise be) and honestly I wouldn’t even know how to prep for this beyond doing everything you can to keep fit and well, washing your hands and never eating pate. We get slagged as a profession but we really do keep people safe in ways they can’t even think of:

safe drinking water
maintaining professional standards in food hygiene
vigilance at borders for communicable diseases, humans and animals
surveillance to track risks on the horizon, down to minutia of detail for one or two bugs
vaccine safety and accessibility

Plus everything that goes with dealing with the aftermath of when those things go wrong, like surges in measles because ppl don’t believe in vaccines.

You basically glue hamburger back together as a steak. So the rare part has actually been on the surface in the slaughter room and is full of bacteria. On a real steak as long as the animal wasn't sick and the outside was seared it would be safe to eat. With glued steak you're effectively licking the slaughter house floor.

I have two portable purse sized HEPA filters I take everywhere with me I hang off the back of my wheelchair and have since the beginning of pandemic--I caught long covid in a fully masked office with myself and the only other person there fully masked and both of those little air cleaners running the entire time I was there.

Covid transmits through the eyes as we know from the early China reports. There was literally a doctor there who gave an entire press statement on it. My partner's pulmonologist office literally had every single staff member not only in a mask, but also wearing fully sealed goggles--I'm guessing he read the same press statement I did.

So just aiming the HEPA filter at the costumes not going to completely help the situation.

But what you could do is get one of those small HEPA filter refills, like for the Westinghouse portable air filter they sell on Amazon and Walmart, and tape it to the air entrance of the costume fan--those filters are small so it should work if you put a seal around the frame of the little disposable filter. Find one large enough, you might even be able to use a refill from a mask that takes cartridges filter the air with HEPA quality for your costume and it won't be as bulky using one of those.

This year I'm presenting a "both sides" viewpoint for some of it and it's definitely difficult. We just did an argumentative essay about vaccine mandates so students can understand why we have them, and one of the reasons against was about religious freedoms. Many students still argued that vaccines save lives and thus are necessary.

How long until we don't have them?? I am sick to my stomach thinking about the babies born this year or within the next 5 years that might not get to have the MMR vaccine simply because it's been banned.

Well, in sum, the reply isn't meant to be that deep - but addresses only superficially a single premise: that we did have a historical precedent where taxes were withheld. The who, what, where, when isn't really part of the argument, only because it's not much of an argument.

To delve into deeper issues of modern taxes and the administration of the hegemony, and all its hundreds of military bases around the planet - versus feudalism, which is what the founders were no doubt contemplating the end stages of, on the heels of the enlightenment - is likely too much for one reddit comment to hold (though a lot of a parallels to today's shifting landscape). A rambling philosphical discussion at a coffee shop would indeed be the better venue, with all delicious things available.

I think we all know that government and economies don't exist without debt. The debt must be paid, and we pay it in our taxes. I do my taxes every year, and I am but a poor plebe with some limited cognition, and a lot of coffee.

Thank you, I did. And here's what I found: "tax strike" seems to be a minority term at best. I see it deployed by organizations designed to channel action away from effective collective action such as "No Taxes to a King", 50501, and Reason magazine.

In contrast, "tax resistance" has an extensive article on Wikipedia. It's easy to see in the pre-industrial period (when the average worker owned their means of production) how failing to deliver their products to a feudal lord, especially as an organized community, could and did have an impact.

The list of historical acts of tax resistance is insightful because we can see how organized, and evocative acts like Ghandi's salt march and the Boston tea party galvanize a populace into meaningful action. Just as we can see that most modern tax resistance movements that boiled down to "don't pay income taxes" accomplished little to nothing.

Hypothetically, occupying a UPS freight terminal as a protest to the new de minimis tariffs would be an effective example of tax resistance that has led to political change. "Let's all not pay our taxes fellow redditors" seems unlikely to be.

This argument falls flat for me because the services offered by the government prior to federal income taxes in most countries was abysmal, it's not a system of government you want to go back to.

Sure it was only suppose to be temporary but then it was used to fund life saving programs and services that dramatically improved the lives of the masses, literally including your own.

When it was implemented society was also going through major advances, and our current level of complexity is a much more expensive one to maintain. The era before income taxes didn't have paved roads, damns, electricity, disease and weather monitoring to the same complexity etc.

Without federal income taxes and the programs they find your life would be significantly worse. So the "it was only suppose to be temporary!" Argument is weak IMO.

That being said I absolutely agree that if these services are all being cut and the function of the federal government to serve your interested gutted then refusing to pay out of protest, as a mass movement, is totally on the board.

You would be surprised how quickly people come together in disasters. If you make the effort, others will come together. Get to know people that work in grocery, hardware, auto repair, etc... Yeah, there's even the bigger problem of those that are socially isolated due to medical disability: a lot of people get abandoned by friends when they become disabled and that just gets more magnified their disability gets worse.

I myself even had a close friend of many years come to me after I got my wheelchair tell me he didn't want to be seen with the wheelchair, so we couldn't hang out anymore if it was going to be permanent.

As more and more people lose their health insurance and long covid infections increase (it's one in 10 individually counted infections that develop it, not every 10 people who get covid at some point)

No one is saying that the Democrats are poor leaders or undeserving of criticism. They absolutely are. I'm incredibly pissed off, incredibly tired of being forced to vote for the lesser of two evils, and tired and pissed off that they continually run candidates on the basis of "sure they're not appealing to all or even most of our base, but at least they're not Trump" because progressive candidates threaten their grip on the political system. I'm not ignoring those facts, but the sad fact is that the Democrats have both refused to oppose the Republicans and refused to stand out of the way for more radical people to do the job.

The 2016 election was one of the great unforced errors in all political history, and yet no one lost their jobs except the rank-and-file. Then the same inept team made an even worse mistake, nominating a completely unelectable candidate for VP, and then covering up Biden's incapacity until it was far too late to have a contested primary.

And again, no one lost their jobs. There was no postmortem, there was no admission of failure, the Democrats go back to their favorite ploy of blaming "the voters" for their ineptitude.

In the lack of leadership opposition, it falls to us.

How's that going to work, exactly? Can you find me an example of an actual resistance organization that didn't have any leaders, and actually made any progress?

Democratic voters should have demanded change after 2016, and instead, they were all, "We can't criticize the DNC now, in our moment of peril." And then the DNC did it again, and again, have accepted no responsibility for their actions and are not planning to make any changes at all.

Especially since I don't disagree with you! It's just a matter of accepting the reality. The reality is that we have a two party system that relies on those in power to relinquish that power. That's never going to happen. We're stuck with Dems as "progressive" (read: less-regressive) leadership until we can change the entire system to multi-party and actually get our voices heard. And although I'm a progressive I'm also a pragmatist: right now, we can't really focus on getting progressive ideals into government (UBI, universal healthcare, etc.) until we wrench back the status-quo of a decade ago (freedom of expression, immigrants and native-born brown people not living in fear, etc.). We were on our way from point A to point E. We were at about D, but we've backslid to B. We need to get back to D before we can progress, and as far as politicians themselves go that means either tearing the whole system down and starting from scratch or trying to inject more backbone into what we've got. I also want to tear down and replace the DNC, but even token resistance is more than zero.

When I talk about "opposition leadership" I mean it in the political sense. Also I missed a word and meant "leadership in opposition." Specifically what I meant was opposition leadership in Congress. My personal opinion is whatever encourages Trump & Co to move more quickly and get too far out over their skis is a good thing. Their end goals are the same whether it happens tomorrow or in a year. We need people to feel slapped in the face instead of simply growing used to the changes slowly over time.

Now, that doesn’t answer the problem that Trump literally left office with bodies in the streets during COVID, yet MAGA hung onto him. I’d say there’s no level of slap that will wake up MAGA at this point. We need all the folks who are just trying to quietly ride it out to wake up.
