Single shot open bolt

What is the current status of single shot open bolt firearms? For example could a simple open bolt personally manufactured firearm without any magwell be legally built today?
There appears to be conflicting opinions out there, with little discussion in the last decade or so.

Also check the hitchhiker, openbolt single shot, blow back, locks open after firing the one round

I won’t be the one to do it but god that thing is begging for someone to make an extractor and magazine for it

It auto extracts by simple blow back.
And legally you should be ok if the loading mechanism requires an independent second action to dispense/drop in another round. But at that point your not far off from just building a regular semiauto like an hd22 or something

Are you sure it auto-extracts? All the footage I’ve seen included manually digging the round out

Look up the GB-22, it’s exactly what you describe.

Ah, interesting. That is helpful thank you. Seems to be a lot of confusion around this. Cross posting elsewhere gets me multiple answers. But this offers much more clarity.
