I've reached a point where I don't know what Discord is and I'm too afraid to ask. I've just never had an interest in finding out.
And here are some more words, because it's 2025 and every sub on Reddit apparently has to have some ritarted, arbitrary rules that makes using the it infinitely more stupid and hard.
AsoarDragonfly@reddit
Use Stoat instead. You are very welcome in advance. Read about it and check it out. Also it has a profile on alternativeto.net
poop-machines@reddit
It's an app for communication, and meeting people who share hobbies with you.
It allows for group calls and conversations, video and voice, and allows for private conversations too.
Many of the discord servers are 18+.
It also allows you to share images, memes, files, etc. anything you can think of. You can share your screen. People use it for games, sexual stuff, innocent conversations, making friends, talking about hobbies. Each discord server is like a subreddit, and each group is split into different sections where the content varies wildly.
RhetoricalOrator@reddit
It also has a huge attraction to people looking for a way to facilitate criminal activity, ethical or not. Interests can range from having a place that facilitates piracy and sales of illegally obtained digital goods like streaming login credentials all the way to having a place to share anti-government sentiments and coordinate protests.
I've always had the impression that the potential for casual anonymity was one of Discord's biggest features. A big leak not only undermines that image but also poses a legitimate risk to its communities.
kawasakisquid@reddit
How can you not know what you are talking about and still be so confident?
RhetoricalOrator@reddit
I mean, I got two names mixed up. What I said does apply to telegram. I screwed up and own it.
kawasakisquid@reddit
that's true but it's a pretty big mistake to make, they are two entirely different things
poop-machines@reddit
I disagree it's a pretty easy mistake to make if you use neither
courtneyincourt@reddit
ah, the question of our time
EvidenceBasedSwamp@reddit
Discord is super infiltrated by the feds, you'd have to be dumb to do crime there
SmallRocks@reddit
No it’s fucking not. This is a regurgitation of anti privacy talking points.
RhetoricalOrator@reddit
Holy moly. You're right and I am totally wrong! I conflated the two and completely messed up. Thank you for the correction.
noodlessentme@reddit
You are wrong on so many levels I don’t know where to start
It’s used 85% of the time for gaming and teenagers
Hidesuru@reddit
I've never heard of discord being used for porn and the like. I mean I'm sure there is plenty of it sent around on people's servers for their friends and shit, and no doubt a few servers just for that, but surely it's not common.
poop-machines@reddit
nah porn is huge on discord, maybe you havent seen it in your circles, but try this:
Search google for "discord servers" and look at the server lists, and see how many are 18+ and fetish/sex/porn related. I'd even go as far as saying it's one of the main uses for discord, behind gaming, social, hobbies, and maybe a couple of other things. It's definitely common enough to be listed.
Hidesuru@reddit
Huh. I'll be damned. Til. Also yeah I misunderstood you my bad.
serg06@reddit
It's like Slack or Team, but without bugs
Nintendo_Pro_03@reddit
The difference is, Slack is more often used for professional purposes, while Discord is used for entertainment and gaming.
whatisthisnowwhat1@reddit
Shit that locks away info in to little bubbles that you have zero way of finding yourself
DariusStrada@reddit
It's Skype with a gamer skin
Jakobus3000@reddit
Do you know IRC from back in the days? It’s just a copy of it made into an „app“.
travistravis@reddit
I feel like an idiot that as someone who uses Discord and someone who grew up on IRC, I didn't make this connection.
Jakobus3000@reddit
There are so many things like it. Slack for example.
PIPXIll@reddit
If you are older, think of it as IRC.
Join a server, join rooms, chat. Discord just adds VOIP and embedded images/videos.
RhesusFactor@reddit
Its IRC with VOIP.
Oxygenisplantpoo@reddit
If you're old it's like a combination of IRC and Teamspeak with modern interface and features.
PrinterInkConsumer@reddit
Discord is almost exclusivity morbidly obese basement dwellers and/or pedophiles.
lupinedelweiss@reddit
🤔
starlight_dusk@reddit
Touch some grass
Jazzlike-Spare3425@reddit
Also furry artists!
ApollyonDS@reddit
Messaging app. You create severs and invite people to chat. It's great, but obviously can breed terrible echochambers, due to it's nature. But it's mostly used by casually by random friend groups and fan communities.
The360MlgNoscoper@reddit
Can we learn from this and stop requiring id’s for everything?
Nintendo_Pro_03@reddit
To be fair, IDs aren’t necessarily required, but you can’t see certain content on the app without it.
Benskien@reddit
no!
now please use bankid to log into 4chan
aecrux@reddit
only required for diamond accounts thankfully
maliciousprime101@reddit
Maybe….nah, hand over your ID to exist on the Internet sir/s
chipmunk_supervisor@reddit
It's interesting that Discord says 70,000 users have been impacted while the rumors (which the BBC apparently declined to include in their reporting) claims there are 2 million images stolen in the breach totalling... whatever amount of terabytes, I saw it earlier but I've already forgotten.
As noted in the article Discord says that the rumor is false and was started by the hackers to fuel public worry and add pressure in order to extort them but at the same time those aren't exactly contradictory details, y'know? An average of 28 images per user sounds like a lot but if they're pulling a few dozen stills from a facial recognition videos they could get to that number of photos from that number of affected users even if a chunk of them just scanned their ID instead and are pulling the average down.
whatisthisnowwhat1@reddit
It was a customer service portal there isn't 2 million images being sent to it
whepoalready_readdit@reddit
My data has prolly been stolen more than 50 times without me knowing
Working-Business-153@reddit
My expectations were low, not low enough apparently, this is quicker and more extensive than I expected. The worst fucking thing is that a local piece of software could have been implemented to achieve stated aims, that's how I know the Gov. are lying about their reasons for implementing this.
IsNotPolitburo@reddit
As the parasitic billionaire class continues to squeeze the rest of us as hard as they can, and climate change continues to worsen, our governments would really rather people not have the kind of access to free information and communication that lead to the Arab Spring.
The360MlgNoscoper@reddit
Can we learn from this and stop trying to backdoor everything?
GlockInAFiatPunto@reddit
"The leaked data may involve personal information, partial credit card details and messages that were exchanged with Discord's customer service agents"
I'm going to assume the personal information means, the ID you provided to verify your age...
