I Like Me-John Candy documentary

It’s on Prime and I just finished watching it. It was awesome to see all the SCTV people on there among other comedians. I remember when he died, but it didn’t affect me, I guess I was too young to “get” death since I was so caught up in life at that point. I know my dad was bummed because he loved that type of comedy style and he loved SCTV. If you haven’t seen it I would definitely say watch it.
A girl I worked with was really good friends with someone who was in a small part in Wagons East! (she was cool by the way) and she came in to my work one day and everyone asked about John Candy and she spoke so well of him and you could tell it still upset her to talk about him.
I gained a whole new respect for the man. I think getting all those big comedic names to talk about him over 30 years after his death spoke volumes about his character.

Did anyone see the scene after the credits ended? I think that’s the first time they showed footage from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles of Del opening the trunk and showing what was inside of it, but the screen went black before we got a chance.
ExtraGloves@reddit
Yup. Don’t think that’s been seen before.

This documentary was awesome. I was 5 years old when he passed but always loved his films. This made me tear up, great watch

I saw that the documentary was out today and thought "Oh, I guess this is as good a night for crying as any." Gotta have some laughs and nostalgia as well..

Yep. It was rough. I think Steve Martin talking about the scene in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles was where I really lost it. That’s still one of my favorite movies and gets me every time.

i sobbed for like an hour like a baby. So pathetic i know

Why nothing about Cool Runnings? His last and a favorite?
massive-bafe@reddit
Came here precisely to make this point. Its absence was so egregious that I could only think it must have been a weird rights issue or something.
In my view, there are three or four movies that are synonymous with John Candy, and Cool Runnings is one of them!
Admirable_Fail_4594@reddit
Cool Runnings has always been a massive favourite in the UK.

I was a little disappointed about that, too. It’s one of my all time favorites.
Time for a rewatch, I think. Haven’t had one in a while.

One of the few docs that’ll make you mist up in the FIRST five minutes! Aykroyd really loved him, I know he wanted him in Ghostbusters. And John Hughes, another legend, dang. Maybe Hanks, Jr has a future as a documentary director.

As far as I’ve ever heard he was the quintessential gentlemanly Canadian, star or not: gentle, humble, self-effacing, kind, generous to a fault and loving and so so talented He was everything you could hope he would be and more, so I’ve heard. That was a rare commodity in those days and I think even rarer now. My uncle lives in Toronto and taught his brother saxophone back in the 80’s- he has some good stories about John and fam. (Apparently they were all quite quick witted and affable)

Affable is the perfect adjective for him.
Now I have to watch The Great Outdoors. I haven’t seen that movie in at least 30 years and that was a must watch in my house growing up.

We watch that movie every year while we're on vacation. One of ur absolute favorites! I cried my eyes out during this documentary
Money_Magnet24@reddit
I wanted to ask if anyone on this sub watched it because I want to know if it’s worth it
Thanks for answering my question
I watched SCTV reruns they were syndicated here in Los Angeles so it was interesting to find out most of these talented folks were from Canada.

Aykroyd is so funny in it too. A great foil.

Everyone’s Uncle Buck.

My god did i cry after this. I really really loved this so much
Particular-Month413@reddit
That comment one of them made about John being paid less than everyone else and holding a grudge. Fuck that guy. That is all
BMoney8600@reddit
I just finished watching it and holy crap it was nothing short of beautiful. I know he is in Heaven in disbelief knowing that this was made. May God rest this kind soul.
Muted-Menu-428@reddit
I cried and howled at this documentary. I love him.
miltonwadd@reddit
I'm watching right now. I was devastated when he died, he was my ideal man when I was a little girl I wanted to marry him.
5 minutes in I'm already crying

Agreed.
He’s definitely the reason I have type for men.

Thought this would be good but didn’t expect it to hit as hard as it did. Some of those interviews, whew. Handled with such graciousness. Uncle Buck will always be one of my favorites.

Still one of my favorite comedians since I was a kid. Excited to watch it, but also I’m not ready for the heaviness of the doc.
Roland-Of-Eld-19@reddit
Loved it and invigorated my Canadian Pride once again! 🇨🇦
