I see Netherlands on the list. So it's a shit list
ScreenNo5858@reddit
yeah that's absolutely wild
the best food in holland is all Turkish and Moroccan restaurants lmao
Wytsch@reddit
That is just bullshit. Turkish dishes in NL are mostly shit because it focuses on what Dutch people want. The only really nice cuisine in NL is Surinaams or Indonesisch. Moroccan cuisine is also good def, but in much less quantity then the cuisines i mentioned.
ScreenNo5858@reddit
**nasty, what's actually nasty is bitterballen and fermented fish (and yes I have eaten it all)
I complemented you guys on having the best sweets in europe, don't make me take that back

Germany above Romania and even Germany and England in the top 50 is a sacrilege to good food everywhere.
RaoulDukeRU@reddit
I believe that they didn't really rank the national cuisine, but the food available. In Germany and England you can basically enjoy the cuisine of all countries in the world. Because of the large number of immigrants, of whom many operate restaurants. Plus the number of three Michelin stars restaurants.
I can't speak for the English, but as a German I can tell you that, especially the Southern and Austrian, traditional cuisine is actually really good! Ask tourists (even from the Mediterranean) that went to a good restaurant in Bavaria and ate Schweinebraten mit Knรถdeln/roast pork with dumplings and red cabbage. The majority will tell you that it's very delicious. Of course there's not simply one dish. I think many people are aware how good our bread and sausages are and the large variety. Germany has over 3,000 types of bread and 1,200 different pastries and rolls, making it a world leader in bread variety. Plus there areย over 1,200 to 1,500ย different types of sausages in Germany, with regional variations and unique recipes for each kind.ย This vast variety includes fresh, grilled, cured, smoked, and spreadable options, reflecting how deeply embedded sausages are in German culture. As well as bread is.
The way Mediterraneans are looking down on our cuisine, probably has more to do with our "eating culture". People here just don't put the same effort into food and its preparation. For example, we don't want to spend as much money on having fresh produce and food in general. If you look up how much of their income Italians spend on food vs. Germans, you can see a fairly big difference.
Regarding British food: On the internet we usually get to see these abnormalities like deep fried Mars bars or chip butties. I also don't know how one could come up with such weird food. But I'm pretty positive that it's not the daily diet of most British people.
Mosesofdunkirk@reddit

English food includes full engligh breakfast, beef wellington, roast dinners, fish and chips. Even world famous chefs like Gordan Ramsay focus on the food of England.
Name me a German food that compares? Have you ever actually eaten English food?
Kitsooos@reddit
Don't get so tough about it. You have a handful of good recipies. But that doesn't compare to countries that have literally dosens upon dosens of good recipies.
Cefalopodul@reddit
Fish and chips is portuguese.
NightZT@reddit
No offense but that didn't really catch me eitherย
Tobemenwithven@reddit
Give me a comparative example? Not to be a dick but what does Austria have?
Fish and chips with proper sauce, are you saying thats nothing?
NightZT@reddit
Gefรผllte Paprika (Peppers or other vegetables stuffed with rice and minced meat and drenched in tomatoes), Grammelpogatscherl (layered small bread with cracklings inside), regular Pogatscherl, Paprikahendl (roasted chicken drenched in paprika and tomatoes), several types of Gulash (Krumpirngulasch, Rindsgulsch, Schweinsgulsch), loads of different types of Sterz, the typical Schnitzel, Schnitzel with roasted Pumpkinseeds, Schweinsbraten, loads of different variants of sweet or spicy Strudel, Marillenknรถdel (apricot dumplings), Kaiserschmarrn, Palatschinken etc.
That would be a list of traditional dishes I quite like and regularly cook for myself or which my grandma cooks (who does it a lot better than me).ย
Also didn't plan to compare Austria with Great Britain I just meant your answer didn't really convince me

VVavaourania@reddit
I disagree a lot. I would agree with you 25 years ago but since then their cuisines have incorporated many influences for their own dishes and at least the restaurants in these two countries become better and better.
ChugHuns@reddit
Pshhh. Germany should be above Romania. Who wants Polenta every day?
noHoffnungohneliebe@reddit
Germany is number 6 on the list with the most 3-star Michelin kitchens. In total more than 340 restaurants have at least 1 star. Im sorry romania.
HoeTrain666@reddit
They donโt tend to serve Kรคsespรคtzle or Klรถรe in Bratensauce in Michelin star kitchens over here.
noHoffnungohneliebe@reddit
Tell me you haven't been to many Michelin restaurants without telling me:
https://guide.michelin.com/de/de/selection/germany/restaurants/3-stars-michelin
HoeTrain666@reddit
Well, none of the dishes depicted in the link you provided resemble any of the dishes I mentioned, or any traditional German cuisine that Iโm aware of soโฆ thanks for proving my point? Most of them look like they require cooking techniques unbeknownst to the vast majority of cooks in Germany.
Not saying I agree with us not belonging on a top 50 list (and Iโll even extend that to England) but a lot of us excel at deluding ourselves regarding the quality of traditional German cuisine while simultaneously, the vast majority of Germans doesnโt really care about what they eat as long as itโs filling, cheap and comes with a beer
Cefalopodul@reddit
And how many of them provide German cuisine only?
Imaginary-One6734@reddit
Yeah but do this 3 Michelin star restaurants represent the German cuisine in it's,,glory "? I've eaten and lived in many countries from this top and most deserve to be there, specially the last ones deserve top places. Turkish or Iranian ones use spices that in Germany you don't even know how the look like....from someone that lives in Germany
noHoffnungohneliebe@reddit
You realize Germany was never an isolated place and traded With the east and the Orient since... Ever? Of course WE have and use spices lol you still got your German worldview from Post WW2 recipes.
Cefalopodul@reddit
And how many of them provide German cuisine only?

Look foryourself. This IS German food. Welcome to the 21. Century. We dont live in the middle ages anymore and German Cuisine IS one of the best of the world. Im sorry romania. I Love your Cuisine aswell. I would never Shit on your Cuisine.
Cefalopodul@reddit
It's not, but if that's what you want to think, then think it.
You bring up Michelin star restaurants as if that is supposed to mean anything. This list ranks cuisines and out of Germany's 90 million people less than 0,1% eat at restaurants.
Germans are great engineers, great craftsmen, great organizers but German food is simply bad and does not belong in a top 50 list. That is the objective truth.
noHoffnungohneliebe@reddit
He said after making a subjective statement.
Evidence against your thesis: the ranking discussed here.
Outrageous_Trade_303@reddit
They have great doner, pizza and burgers in Germany. You eat very good when you visit as a tourist. /s
FrostmaidenImm@reddit
You as Greek I presume what is good about Greek food? U have nice cheese i tried so many graviera, olive oil is good as well. But your shops don't have rly high variety and even islands don't have a lot of fresh fish. Souvlaki and gyros were ok but nothing to be proud about. So what did we miss to try, so next time we can correct it?
Outrageous_Trade_303@reddit
Well, I like the Greek style if barbecue (either fish or meat): salt, pepper and oregano. Just try a steak next time you are in Greece, We call it ฮผฯฯฮนฮถฯฮปฮฑ (brizola). I also like ฯฮฑฯฯฮนฯฯฮนฮฟ (pastitsio) which is similar concept to lasgna.
Regarding fish I guess it depends on the day/period.
FrostmaidenImm@reddit
BBQ is BBQ if U don't do anything special, and brizola I checked is pork chops in marinade. Pastitsio is ok a dish. But is that all for allegedly best cuisine in the world?
Outrageous_Trade_303@reddit
These are my favorites.
noHoffnungohneliebe@reddit
Or you can go to one of the over 340 Michelin restaurants. They are found in virtually every city here.

bosquelero@reddit

Kisobran_kolica@reddit
People are ignorant, that's my opinion. If you know anything about cooking and cuisine, Turkey ought to be number one, then Italy, then all the rest. Spain LOL
Financial-Self-560@reddit
Pastrmajlija alone solos the entire Italian cuisine.
Kitsooos@reddit
The first 10 more or less make sense to me. But some thing are very sus. For example Germany has no business being on that list. And Cyprus being so far away from Greece, Turkey and Lebanon is pretty insane.
Zucc-ya-mom@reddit
German food is actually great. Have you ever tried it or are you going off of stereotypes?
Kitsooos@reddit
I've been to Germany 2 times and Switzerland once. Und Ich kann auch Deutsch.
As far as I can tell, it's the same situation all over Central Europe. THERE ARE a few good recipies in all regions. But that's it. "A few". There are countries/regions in the world that have trully more good recipies than one could possibly count. These are the ones that are generaly considered "the best" cousins. Having dope schnitzel and good french fries is not enough to bring you to the top.
Zucc-ya-mom@reddit
You think youโre qualified to say that because youโve visited 2 times? And Schnitzel is Austrian btw. Have you tried Sauerbraten, Roulade mit Kartoffelknรถdeln, Entenbraten mit Rotkraut, Hackbraten, etc. or the numerous desserts and baked goods there are? Germans also like to grill meats and when they do that, itโs as great as anywhere, Greece included.
Your comment is like if I were saying that Greece has no business being on that list, because thereโs a few good recipes and thatโs it. Gyros and french fries alone arenโt enough.
German food could even be higher on that list as itโs better than Colombian, maybe even Polish and perhaps on par with Spanish food if it werenโt for how itโs commonly stereotyped as being just Schnitzel.
Btw, the USA do belong on that list, despite the common misconception of it being only cheeseburgers. Their different kinds of BBQ alone put them on that list. Not to mention what each regional cuisine over there has to offer.

icancount192@reddit
Nothing beats pasteis, not even bougatsa or baklava
joaonmatos@reddit
Short hand for pastรฉis de nata is natas. Pastรฉis is any pastry.
icancount192@reddit
Oh thank you, I was thinking de nata, de Belem etc and I thought all these are called pasteis then
joaonmatos@reddit
Pastel de Belรฉm is the original pastel de nata, which has a secret recipe and is only manufactured at Fรกbrica dos Pastรฉis de Belรฉm, pastel de nata is the generic term. Other pastรฉis are pastel/bolinho de bacalhau (codfish cake), pastel de feira (Brazilian, usually filled with mineiro cheese and other savory fillings) and pastel de chaves which is kind of a phyllo dough filled with meat, which actually reminds a lot me of bรผrek from the Balkans. So if you have some dough and some filling (sweet or savory) and it is not bready (empada) or big (torta/tarte/quiche) it could probably be a pastel.
External_Kick_2273@reddit
Should have been Brazil instead of Portugal then it would have made sense.ย

kawaiibutpsycho@reddit
Only if you're obsessed with meat and hate all kinds of vegetables (expect when it's blended in a soup) and hate sauce expect for tomato based sauces. But I agree that the pastries are incredible but also why do much raw egg? Too many Portuguese desserts taste like raw egg.

I don't mind Turks thinking their food is better, their cuisine slaps, but why are they so scared to admit our food is very much different ?
mussgs@reddit
Different? I love Greek food, itโs usually my first choice as a restaurant when I travel as I am very selective about Turkish food. But itโs not very different, itโs very similar. Actually itโs a fraction of Turkish cuisine, which surprises me to see here in this list above Turkish food. Obviously I am biased, but my arguments are based on facts :) most likely Turks learned mezes and most seafood from Greeks, and some olive oil dishes. But Turkish cuisine also includes extremely rich eastern dishes and mezes harmonised with Aegean cuisine, so itโs much lighter than Middle East versions. Whatโs different might be the pork dishes, which has also lamb versions. I like Greek kalamar better than ours btw :)
Economy-Movie-4500@reddit
It's similar defenitely, a loooot of influence on both sides but we each have our dishes and those that have the same origin we make them differently. I don't doubt it's similar but the "stolen" thing is so stupid
mussgs@reddit
Fully agree. I see the who stole whose food debate like siblings teasing each other :)
NinerKNO@reddit
Greek cuisine shares a profound historical and culinary heritage with the food of Western Turkey, rooted in their common geography and history. However, Turkish cuisine as a whole is incredibly diverse, also encompassing the distinct culinary traditions of Anatolia, the Black Sea, and the Southeast.

Turkish guy living in Spain.
Spanish food is mid level at best. So so far below from Turkish, Chinese, Indian, Japan, Greek cousine. Not even close to French or Italian as well.
Even Portuguese food is way, way better than whatever this is.
Ingredient quality is also low here. Taste the local tomato and then try the local tomato in Italy. Such a difference.
Dauincap@reddit
In which region do you live? I found some really good food out there and for me they beat the shit out of the Portuguese.
Weird-Comfortable-25@reddit
Catalunya. Which region you are and what food you suggest? I started traveling, actually found some solid restaurants at Madrid.
Dauincap@reddit
Get some recommendations from someone or random influencers (might sound dumb but trust me I found some great places).
I also had the same problem with the vegetables as you, in Madrid I found a place that actually had good tasting ones and it was like 30โฌ for each person, not bad.
Did you try some good croquetas con jamรณn ibรฉrico, fuet, pa amb tomaca with cured cheese, crema catalana... Now I realized that you are Turkish so you might be Muslim, if you can't or don't like to eat pork, then yeah some things will be out for you.
Okey, so generally Basque food and Galician reign superior in Spain, they have good cider and that stupid kalimotxo that somehow works.
I recommend you: gazpacho (in summer it's fantastic, home made is better), salmorejo, ajo blanco with a few sprinkles of fried jamรณn, sopa de ajo, fabada asturiana, for seafood and meats anything done in the north should be good; pulpo a la gallega, boquerones en su tinta, merluza en salsa verde, bacalao al pilpil, cachopo, flan de huevo, there are too many for me to remember. Not a fan of their txuleton though. BASQUE CHEESECAKE is the best thing ever.

What food does Italy have that Greece doesn't have? 100 pasta variations and pizza?
halosethr@reddit
What food does Greece have that can compare to Italy?
Honestly?
Are you living in a fantasy?
Pederakis@reddit
Answer my question, then? Must be an easy answer according to your reaction?
halosethr@reddit
I spent a week in Greece.
The best dishes we ate in Cefalรน were tzatziky, bread and feta. Also the olive oil was very good.
Also we got food poisoning the last night we were there, really good food.
I remember they were pretty lazy since nobody had fresh fish in any restaurant, they prefered to give the english tourists burgers and pizza, I think there were signs for ITALIAN PASTA also, go figure.
I wouldnt compare food you can make inside your own house on Sunday to anything you can eat in Italy, so letโs see:
Pasta and all its variations (that includes tortelli riempiti, look that shit up bossman)
Pizza (if you ve never been anywhere but a Dominos then do no comment)
Risotto (try doing this, I dare you)
Sauces & Pesto
Varietร of cheese (not just wet soggy feta shit only good for a salad) - Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana etc
Dried and cured meat (Salame di Felino, Prosciutto, Spalla Cotta etc)
Pasticceria italiana has no other contest other than the french one globally (Sfogliattele, Cannoli, etc)
Gelato
Better coffee
I think people like you just live in fantasy land thinking the food deserves a top whatever worldwide, I would overlook it completely.
Pederakis@reddit
Just like I said, Pizza and Pasta ๐คฃ
Sfogliatelle and Cannoli are rock hard, inedible.
I make better coffee at home than 90% of the cafes I visited in Italy. It's not bait, simply very mid food.
halosethr@reddit
I will agree with you just because of the fact that I sense you have nothing else in your life to be happy about.
Keep living the dream kid.
I wish you good luck
Pederakis@reddit

Netherlands above Macedonia. LOL. Western bias, NL has one of the worst cuisines in the world.
Money_Ad_8607@reddit
Top 5 is ok. I think Spanish is overrated and it shouldโve been replaced by something Asian like Indian. Polish being so high feels wrong tho. Generally any Balkan country being under any Germanic, Baltic, and West and East Slavic country is simply wrong. England is too low tho, the cuisine being bad is more often a meme than a reality. You canโt read get pretty solid local stuff. The Netherlands being higher than England given that they are probably even more reliant on their colonies is crazy.

Suspicious-Steak475@reddit
Who made this list. Greece is number one and Cyprus is 50 while they have similar food.
Fatalaros@reddit
The reason is because it counts unique dishes as well and most of them have given the points to Greece and not Cyprus. And tbf Greece has a huge variety of dishes that Cyprus completely lacks (like game for example).
rintzscar@reddit
No. The actual reason is because the list is not made by experts. It's simply voted by TasteAtlas' users. You can go, register on the site and vote yourself.
They vote for Greece instead of Cyprus, because they know Greece and not Cyprus.
This is simply a list of "which country's cuisine has the most fans".
lo-Pear@reddit
Yet, if you actually go on the Cyprus page you will see that they have a very small amount of traditional dishes compared to Greece. Their cuisine is relatively limited and has Levantine influences. Many admired Greek dishes only became popular there recently
rintzscar@reddit
The reason for that is the same - dishes in Taste Atlas are submitted by people and only approved by TA admins. People submit Greek dishes, not Cypriot dishes.
lo-Pear@reddit
Well there is not much to submit because Cyprus doesnt have much original dishes like i said, their traditional cuisine is very limited compared to Greeceโs. Even different islands and regions in Greece have local dishes why would you expect Cyprus, an island next to the levant to share the same dishes?
ca95f@reddit
Think about it. You definitely eat better and cheaper when visiting Greece than when visiting Cyprus. This is people voting which cuisine they like more and most of them (locals excluded) have the tourist experience.
As a Greek, I have to say that all Mediterranean cuisines have common dishes (Ottoman empire blending everything) and they all are amazing. Morocco was a revealing experience for me with one excellent meal after the other. However most of the street food was prepared in ways that were too unsanitary for any Europeans and we wouldn't take the risk of trying it. Spices I bought from Morocco and Turkey were infected by insects and they all developed worms when left in their containers for a while. So, it's not just the taste. It's a lot safer to eat street food in Greece than Turkey or Morocco so people will try more stuff that they haven't tried before.

These lists depend on trends. Im greek and i couldnt give a damn if that list says we re number one.
Alao food has no nationality, borders change over time. If a recipie was inventee by a greek in instanbul/Konstantinope is it greek or turkish? If a food was invented by a turk in Thesaloniki/Selanik is it turkish or greek?

Lithuania is Eastern European by both culture and geography
Delicious_Let5545@reddit
Is it slavic or orthodox?
IgnoreMyPresence_@reddit
Yeah, sorry to break it to you, but Eastern Europe is not just orthodox slavs...
Delicious_Let5545@reddit
Give examples then.. not just deny everything that I say. Comunists past doesnt count. Tell us more what makes bulagrians and lithuanians similliar because we both eastern europe according to you.
IgnoreMyPresence_@reddit
Eastern European countries that are not predominantly Orthodox:
Croatia, Poland, Hungary, Czechia, Slovenia, Bosnia
Eastern European countries that are not Slavic:
Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Albania
Why so hell-bent on avoiding to call yourself Eastern European man? Are you that disgusted of getting lumped in with lowly balkaners like Bulgarians? :D Because by that logic Welsh people for example should be going mad whenever you call them Western European, since god forbid they may have something in common with French, Belgians etc.
Delicious_Let5545@reddit
So you basically ingnoring my questions. No offence but are you autistic? Asking again what things makes our nation similliar to each other? Your definition of east europe is based on cold war map lol By this logic eastern Germany also belongs to eastern europe. Im not against to be called eastern europe, but I dont see any similiarities between Lithuania and Balkan countries besides comunist past.
There is 3 nations in eastern europe that everyone agrees with: Belarus, Ukraine, russia. Others are always debatable.
So tell me what makes Lithuania eastern europe culturally and at the same time similliar to Bulgaria. As you said Lithuania culture is eastern europe just like Bulgarias so dont be shy and tell us more about this. Im ready to learn lol

Iโve said this before but taste atlas is a website where apparently people can vote.

texts with recipes have been found from ancient Greece and Rome for Baklava.
Gatamine10@reddit
The fact that you also have them doesn't make them yours.
panax100@reddit
Greek Tzatziki is fundamentally different from Turkish Cacฤฑk. Modern Baklava originates from the Ottoman Empire, but we do not know which culture truly invented it, as many lay claim to it. The history of baklava is complex, with recipes dating back to BCE. Loukoumi and Sarma/Dolma have their roots in Ancient Persia. The Ottomans later adapted them. Gyros and Dรถner are inspired by similar practices and dishes from the Middle East and Asia. Souvlaki is older than Turkey itself...
Your statement is ignorant and disrespectful. I honestly don't know what you "can't stand anymore." The food culture in the Mediterranean and the Middle East has been defined by a shared history of culinary exchange since the beginning of recorded history. You're completely out of line.

Very bad. French cuisine is basically the origin of Western food and modern cuisine. It's far more refined and innovative than the glorified peasants food of Italy. Italians will argue that there's more to their food than pizza and pasta, yeah, dry overcooked meat and vegetables. In Italy its also common to shove in 8 meals in 30 minutes, while in France, food is actually enjoyed.
