What’s your favorite version of Troi?

Maybe it’s because I’ve always had a thing for older women, but, I would take Voyager Troi, over season one Troi with the bun

Velvety_MuppetKing@reddit
Berman had all of the slime and bad taste with none of the actual optimism or hope.
NorCalNavyMike@reddit
Books have been written on the topic—it’s an epic tale of corporate greed and stupidity.
data-atreides@reddit
We had a whole thread about this on that other ST sub, but this comment stands out as a counterpoint. He was very problematic, but he actually played a decisive role keeping Trek going all those years.
YT-Deliveries@reddit
I’m of the opinion that there’s a time when it’s okay to let a franchise end. Personally, I think that time was the end of Star Trek: Nemesis. The alternate ending is a perfect “passing of the torch” and “the adventures continue” point.
Keepontyping@reddit
I think you mean he had his dick.
FragrantExcitement@reddit
He can have his back. I will take her front.
multificionado@reddit
Unfortunately, yes. So much of his back it was like that particular aspect of Gene's spirit latched itself to RIck/Dick Berman.

gdp071179@reddit
Definitely once she started wearing proper uniform - showed off her figure too
Adventurous-Line1014@reddit
What bothered me most was after the far point episode her mental powers diminished. In the first episode she had a conversation with Riker telepathically. Never again? It seems like after that all she could detect were emotions.
KevMenc1998@reddit
She can only do that with people she is extremely close to, like her mom or Will.
SchmarekOfVulcan@reddit
She can do it with other telepaths, even ones she just met, like that Betazoid guy on the other ship in the episode where everyone goes crazy from not being able to dream.
Cookie_Kiki@reddit
She was never a full telepath. She was only able to have that conversation with Will because of their strong bond. Generally, she could only have telepathic conversations with other telepaths
Norphus1@reddit
She does have telepathic conversations with her mother when she appears. And with those telepathic aliens who had to communicate verbally
Adventurous-Line1014@reddit
Ok. But not with non telepathic beings?
Minimum-Tear4609@reddit
In-universe, humans have latent ESP abilities. One could argue that being in a long-term intimate relationship with Riker allows her to have telepathic communication with him.
multificionado@reddit
I wouldn't say "diminished." "Nerfed" would be the more precise term. IC, it would stand more toward etiquette in regards to being around non-telepaths, etiquette set by her telepathic people, the Betazoids.
Adventurous-Line1014@reddit
I suppose if it weren't for that she'd slap the hell out of every third man that walked by.

Which makes no sense for her character, frankly.

Unpopular opinion? You have Jellico to thank for that. >!(I mean, sure, the actress lobbied for herself and got the showrunners and writers to start treating her character with respect, but that's just the real world and not show canon)!<
Pickle_Rick01@reddit

Romulan Troi. Face of the Enemy didn’t make any logical sense but is one of my favorites. Marina’s best performance and Carolyn Seymour gave a lot of depth and nuance to Comander Toreth
kremlingrasso@reddit
They also took her a lot more serious and act officer like after that and started to wear the uniform mostly. Just recently passed that episode.
data-atreides@reddit
She also found the time to become an expert on Romulan propulsion systems, which came in handy in "Timescape".
Piano_Mantis@reddit
I was never a fan of Troi as a kid, but I always loved this episode. It gave her a chance to demonstrate her skills while not being objectified.
As I got older, I realized that my indifference to Troi was only because of the show objectifying her. Once she was less objectified, I came to love her character.

It’s a really frustrating experience. I always liked Troi but the show often defaulted to basically raping her when they wanted to give her character a plot line.

SgtWilko1979@reddit
that always irritated my nerdy self, they were what, 500yrs past the old west? We don't call the 1500's "Ancient times".. grumble grumble. :D
ccaccus@reddit
I think it's more a recontextualization of history after a major shift in human society.
Hesiod divided history into Golden, Silver, Bronze, Heroic, and Iron Ages.
To Starfleet-era humans, our division of Ancient/Medieval/Renaissance/Early Modern history might have seemed just as quaint and anything pre-warp is just ancient. This is reinforced by the Prime Directive: pre-warp civilizations, no matter how advanced, are primitive societies.
FragrantExcitement@reddit
It is weird to the people that lived in that time and called it new west.
SgtWilko1979@reddit
until it was "current west"
Kind_Ad_3268@reddit
Haha, I think the same thing. That's the same time period contextually now having passed as the mid-Renaissance which is definitely not ancient times. Bare minimum 1000 years and even then I personally say 1500 to 2000 years ago.

SirStocksAlott@reddit
BillT2172@reddit
I liked when Troi got to wear the Starfleet uniform, as requested by Capt. Jellico. This & the fact she wanted to earn Bridge / Line officer status later, made it clear Troi had gone to Starfleet Academy & wasn't only a counselor/ therapist.
Also I prefered the dark blue color that we saw in earlier seasons of TNG, wore by Pulaski, Selar or Crusher. The teal variant just didn't appeal to me at all, i.e. the skant worn by Troi, in Encounter at Farpoint.
acesongbird04@reddit
6th and 7th pictures
tantrill@reddit
My favorite Troi episode.
theshub@reddit
Wearing a uniform. Hashtag Gellico did nothing wrong.
toadofsteel@reddit
The funny thing is, most of the changes Jellico made were actually requests by the actors themselves. Troi getting to wear a uniform, Picard's fish being removed (it doesn't return for the rest of the series), and so on.
LV426acheron@reddit
wow I never realized the fish didn't come back either
toadofsteel@reddit
It has to do with Patrick saying that Picard wouldn't have kept a live animal captive like that.
Redditor-at-large@reddit
But it was a lionfish. They’re native to the Pacific and invasive to the Gulf of Mexico at present. In another 400 years, who knows, maybe you find one in the Gulf of Mexico and either you capture it and keep it in a tank or you kill it along with the rest of its relatives living out of balance with the ecosystem.
LV426acheron@reddit
Makes sense, though it did make the room look good.
Maybe they could've just said it was a synthetic fish or in the future they engineer the fish bowl environment so the fish is happy. lol
Late-Yogurtcloset-57@reddit

"The anomaly, my ship, my crew; I suppose you're worried about your fish, too...If it puts your mind at ease - you've saved humanity, once again." - Q
JoeyJoeJoeJrShab@reddit
It's weird how as soon as she put on a uniform that didn't also look like a cheerleader outfit, she got more intelligent. Imagine what could have happened if Gellico also made her wear glasses.
Agitated-Macaroon923@reddit
putting on the uniform also made her forget she was an empath. It's like they changed her whole character arc. I'm one of those people who dont like commander Troi nor do I think she belongs in a commanding position. I think her abilities shine elsewhere and it's perfectly okay for someone to be a member of the crew whose specialty is psychology and mental health.
htownAstrofan@reddit
I wouldnt say she forgot she was an empath. Yes the writers gave her more to do than just counselor stuff but she still had stories and plots that revolved around her psychology background. Quite frankly im glad the writers decided to make her a more competent and serious officer.
Agitated-Macaroon923@reddit
Idk to me she became just another generic officer. She was special and quirky in a way but after that became officer number 10. And her being the same rank as Riker is just weird. There’s just no way they have the same knowledge about ship affairs. But I’m a new Trekkie so idk..
DuckyHornet@reddit
She's in a different division than he is. Their ranks are equivalent, but his appointment to ship XO elevates him
sundr3am@reddit
I'm with you, i think it spoiled her character and made her less unique. It almost implies that an "empath character" has lower value than a commanding, logical thinker type character.
On the other hand, if someone were to argue that her betazoid empath skills were underutilized throughout the show, I'd tend to agree. I think the real disservice was not allowing her abilities to shine through more often and in more obviously useful ways.
JackTheKing@reddit
She rarely pulled rank. I felt like she was appropriate with her command duties. Also, military personnel can have a higher rank but not be in the field chain of command. See the Joint Chiefs. They are advisors and don't issue field orders
multificionado@reddit
No indeed, having her wear a uniform was the only good thing Jellico did on the Enterprise.

To be honest, season 1 Troi felt more alien, more exotic. Not just playing out a (half) human character. It showed that Betazeds had some distinct culture the way she had her hair and some mystery to her character. Put that Troi in a proper uniform and you have the whole package.
multificionado@reddit
Indeed. Pilot Troi was the best in that season, with her uniform and hair. And then they had to ruin it by introducing a blue onesie and an ugly maid bun.
Charon1701@reddit

Honestly, not pictured here, but Troi in Picard.
She wasn't around for long, but her counseling had matured to the point where she was able to give someone a swift kick in the ass when they need it.
I've always thought that her character was too soft. Yes, she's obviously a trained psychologist and should engender feelings of Safety, but she's also a Starfleet officer, and shouldn't be afraid of conflict.
I think the Troi we got in Insurrection, ready to "Saddle up, lock and load" when she had to, but still compassionate and caring overall should have been Season 1 Troi.

Definition of 'Star Struck' or 'Star(Trek) Struck' 😉
Terminator1029@reddit
It's a shame she never wore the reversed voyager uniform. She went from TNG straight to the grey shoulders
KevMenc1998@reddit
Picture 7 or 8, right after Jellico "made her" put on the TNG uniform. I put "made her" in quotes, as Marina Sirtis had been asking to wear it for ages.
Axela556@reddit
I love every version of Troi. She's my favorite Star Trek character 💙

Salamander troi
ptjunkie@reddit
I believe you’re thinking of Janeway
RedditOfUnusualSize@reddit
Not the first time Star Trek has delved into the love that a human can have for a salamander . . .
Thick_You2502@reddit
I Like her without.... ¡THAT F...NG WIG!
Veterinarian-Working@reddit
A Troi for all seasons
newgalactic@reddit
I prefer the version where she picks her own outfits.

Middle second from left.
lemonylol@reddit
#7, when they finally gave her an actual officer's uniform.
Banjo-Oz@reddit
1) Late TNG uniform Troi. Simply amazing what a difference the costume change made to her as a character, but also honestly when I started finding her really hot too; previously, was far more about Bev Crusher.
2) Romulan Troi.
3) Wild West holodeck Troi.
Awingbestwing@reddit
The higher the hair, the closer to space
Valiant600@reddit
The moment she was forced to put on the uniform from Captain Jelico. She wasn't civilian personnel, but an officer, therefore she should act like it.
Worldly-Ad-9303@reddit
I don't know how to answer this question without being hounded by the PC brigade (had a recent bad experience based on what I thought was an innocent comment, in fact I was personally insulted) but basically she looked great any time before the lip thing happened.
LV426acheron@reddit
What lip thing? Marina Sirtis got fillers or did some kind of work on her lips?
Worldly-Ad-9303@reddit
At some point in season 7 her lips definitely looked like she'd had some work done on them, well I thought so anyway. I may or may not be right just my opinion.
Independent_Shoe3523@reddit
The uniform Troi.
Foulmouthedleon@reddit
#7 is peak Troi for me.
ilovespaceack@reddit
first episode with her natural hair and skant uniform
Dry_Ad687@reddit
Worst character ever
shinyRedButton@reddit
What, no frog-Troi?
Worldly-Ad-9303@reddit
I believe it was salamander Troi, both amphibians but very different! 🙃
shinyRedButton@reddit
I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure they never actually say what shes turning into. They use the term “Amphibian-like creature” when she gets to sickbay. Shes turning green and her fingers have tree-frog looking suction pads on the tips. Feels a lot more frog than salamander to me.
Worldly-Ad-9303@reddit
Touche, I guess we'll never know for certain, unless I email Marina and ask her, you have her address?
multificionado@reddit
I have a feeling that the less said about that episode, the better.
IceWonderful9666@reddit
Yes
Jack_Durden_@reddit
Always loved her lower backside 👏
ChrisNYC70@reddit
The older Troi got, the better she got.
ninjamullet@reddit
Romulan Troi because for once she got to play something else than a useless half-empath.
Worldly-Ad-9303@reddit
In the unlikely event that she reads that reply, you probably hurt her 'feelings'!
LV426acheron@reddit
Curly hair = Deanna Troi, with the weird accent she came up with
Straight hair = Marina Sirtis, with her normal speaking accent
sagima@reddit
Everything from uniform onwards is good Her “negative recepticle” look was quite good as well
TheKeyboardian@reddit
What do you mean by negative receptacle?
sagima@reddit
There was an episode where some guy used her as a receptacle for all of his negative thoughts and emotions.
She got a new dress in that episode
It suited her
C-L-H71@reddit
The episodes I enjoyed watching is when DeAnna mother comes on board lol lol especially when she was gling through changes and DeAnna was explaining to Picard I laugh my butt off when Riker was having fun on his expense lol lol

All the ones where she's in uniform. And we had too many seasons of her without a proper uniform.

The one where her and Crusher are doing yoga
Smooth_Tell2269@reddit
I love her rigid pulled back hair in season one.. just kidding. Anything after season one for me.
agirtzce@reddit
i wish we got the uniform + dark curly hair. I loved that her hair looked proper Greek before. But i love the uniform also.
ErandurVane@reddit
You know the blue dress she wore around season 3 or so? The one she wore when she went with Data and Laal to decide her physical appearance. That outfit is like Cupid's arrow right to my heart
