Can someone explain Chalga to me? Is it popular? Is it controversial?

I heard Chalga is a type Bulgarian pop-folk music and apparently it's popular but yet controversial. Is this true?

Thr only honest opinions in challah happen after you are drunk.
You are kind of supposed to hate it when sober, but it is not mean for sober people to begin with.

When something bad happens to a nice fellow, that's blues. When something good happens to a sucky fellow, it's chalga.

This is balkan regueton....

People hate it for 1. Shitty lyrics and repetitive tune, you can churn out a song after 1 hour in the studio I think. 2. It's mainly sung by Romas aka gypsies.
Think of it like Reggaeton: objectively shitty low effort repetitive music, but it becomes indispensable for a drunk party.

Chalga is a “copy” of turbo-folk, which originated in Serbia. It combines euro-pop elements with heavy influence from Turkish and middle eastern music in its rhythm.
Now don’t get me wrong - it is usually distinct from Arabic/Turkish music to a trained ear but to a foreigner it all sounds like bongo-bongo slop (which it is). Heavy, heavy oriental influence from everything including vocals, instruments, music videos…
Euro-pop is trashy enough but combine with Arab-pop and you get…well, chalga.
That’s why it’s controversial. It disgraces city folk because the music is village sounding, and it preys on surface level superficialities, like some rap in America. People like it because it’s hype and they can drink to it, and people don’t like it because it effectively disgraces 1,500 years of traditional music.

It is popular and I absolutely hate it. Even the people who listen to it do it only when they are dead drunk

It’s fast and rhythmic so you can shake your ass in the club after 5 rakias at home and 3 vodkas at the club. Lyrics are made to appeal to women so they can vibe with the music also. Sound is somewhat inspired from traditional folk music around the balkans. Singers are mostly enhanced a lot with plastic surgeries/procedures. Videos are predominantly with less clothed people so you can jerk off when you are 12 years old on music channel on mute. I think that sums it up.

It’s like reggaeton. Millions love it some absolutely hate it. Makes a lot of money. It’s is more for the eyes than for the ears.

It's slop in audio form. The most popular music genre in the country. It's controversial the sense that anything super cheap and trashy is controversial.
