Everyone starts pirating movies to crash the movie industry

Nobody buys subscriptions, nobody pays for anything movie related. It's all pirated. No movie theaters, nothing only piracy.
ajw_sp@reddit
What’s your plan when there’s no more content? Read?
GimmeSomeRope@reddit
I mean people watch youtube all the time. There's plenty of people making art for the love of it. And honestly I've noticed my favorite art tends to be free. A patreon or some other sort of support system like that could help people make bigger budget projects. I would miss dropout though 😞
SweetWolf9769@reddit
no, there's plenty of people making art for the love of it... cause they're getting financially subidized for it. just cause you have access to Youtube for free doesn't mean people aren't paying for it, you take ads out of Youtbe (which would be completely stupid if you boycott theaters, but let ads play on youtube). and again, under OP's premise, you're not paying Patreon, cause you're not paying for anything.
RPK79@reddit
Yeah, nobody monetizes youtube.
GimmeSomeRope@reddit
The guy im replying to said there wouldnt be content if we did that. I said there would be. This doesnt really change that.
LordMoose99@reddit
Youtube still has ads, sooo ya if ad blockers become common that could be on the way out
The_Edeffin@reddit
Lol as if youtube doesnt pay its creators. It actually has pretty good ad sense revenue, plus merch, sponsor spots, etc. Ad block is piracy for youtube sadly, as much as i hate ads. And yeah, most of youtube (both from google and creators) would disappear is everyone started pirating. Very few are doing it for fun. If they arent making money from it they probably have long term hopes to turn it into a profitable venture.
GimmeSomeRope@reddit
It actually doesn't have good ad sense, thats why people are leaving the platform for more stable ones like nebula. Every year google seems to takes more and more of the money the creators would generate and in turn makes creators rely on other sources of income (Patreon and sponsors). Which is exactly my point, people will fund good art. It doesn't need to go through a middleman taking their money if we're pirating everything. If i really enjoy an artist's work i will support them directly if possible.
captchairsoft@reddit
Nobody leaves for Nebula. They add Nebula as a second income stream.
The thing you and the rest of the pretentious folks who think like you miss is that the stuff everybody shits on is what the vast majority like and want more of.
You may hate it, I may hate it, but the people writ large want it.
You can't force good taste.
The_Edeffin@reddit
Its has great ad sense compared to all other mass market platforms (tiktok, insta, etc.). Sure you can look at platforms like nebula…but no one is going to grow their audience there alone, at least at first. Youtube is still a standout gold standard platform for people to build their audience/content style, and allows for the quickest path to sustainable profits. Without something like youtube we would see many fewer content creators lasting out the early days until they have an established enough audience to look off platform.
LastAmongUs@reddit
YouTube’s ad revenue WAS good. Before the Adpocalypse. It’s pretty shit now. And merch and sponsor deals are not handled by YouTube. That’s the creator finding their own ways to make money off of their videos.
blindreefer@reddit
Making art free just means that only rich people get to make art

DigBickBevin117@reddit (OP)
Pirate e books, then music
Wafflinson@reddit
You a Trumper? Why do you hate the existence of art so much?
ajw_sp@reddit
So you just want to eliminate… the arts?
Purple-Measurement47@reddit
I think the unstated plan is to kill the budget for massive projects that cost hundreds of millions of dollars and isn’t really anything that people want
spudmarsupial@reddit
Old movies? At least then we could hear the dialogue. Of course we'd need to relearn the skill of ignoring strings and rubber masks.
One_Recover_673@reddit
Wouldn’t we just Pirate the old movies too? Heck we already do.
thisisnotdan@reddit
Yeah, but universal piracy wouldn't take old movies away; it would only prevent new ones from being made (at least, new ones with any significant investment of time or money).
OP seems to want a world where the visual arts are dominated by billionaire patrons.
Impressive_Stress808@reddit
Plenty of good books to torrent. Pretty safe if you do it from a library computer.
ElSelcho_@reddit
Then what are you gonna pirate moving on?
DigBickBevin117@reddit (OP)
Everything, e books, videogames, music. It should be a global effort to pirate everything.
unicyclegamer@reddit
Right but then why would people produce new works if everyone’s going to pirate it?
Dangerous_Noise1060@reddit
Forgetting that profit isn't the only form of motivation in existence. You're telling me nobody ever made a piece of art out of passion? Nobody ever studied science out of curiosity? Id rather watch some no budget home movie than some made-for-profit blockbuster garbage anyways. If they stopped making billion dollar Disney movies I couldn't care less. If all that was left was self produced local bands CDs and no more major record labels, I'd be fine with that.
Also pirating doesn't kill all market viability. I torrent everything and if I decide it was worth the money I'll buy the original, see them in concert, follow them on patreon etc. I'm not paying up front for something I don't even know if it's good or not with no room for refund. I'm not subscribing to 10 different streaming platforms to watch a movie that I paid to see in theaters, bought on VHS, bought on DVD and lost my original copies. Just because you made one thing one time doesn't mean you deserve to keep getting paid over and over again forever for it. I paid my part, now give me my movie and stop Fing me around on licensing BS. If this is how the industry is going to act then I'll laugh the day they go bankrupt.
SweetWolf9769@reddit
that's bullshit. absolutely no one is going to be happy settling for your nephew's passion project that he made with 5 hundos and some things he found outside a trashcan when audiences have been spoiled with decades of progression.
not every film is a blockbuster big 4 studio movie made with hundreds of millions of dollars. many films still need multiple millions though, and that's not something the average joe has access to, or people are willing to throw away if they know will never make a profit.
pirating doesn't kill market viability. making a widescale concious effort to pirate literally all media moving forward is almost a literal definition of killing the market. you don't see films live, and again, the point of this proposition is not paying to watch movies in theaters, so even if they bring back road shows, you've already agreed to boycott it for no reason.
if i made a thing, and it keeps getting released, you bet your fucking ass i'm getting my part. again, read what OP wrote, this isnt a matter of paying for used media, or having access to old media at fair pricing if its hard to access under normal channels, they're talking about the complete crash of visual media by refusing to pay for any of it in any aspect. y'alls can sit on a thumb if you think people will continue to make more media based on altruism alone lol.
Chimpbot@reddit
As things currently stand, no pirating doesn't kill all market viability.
OP's prospect of everyone pirating everything, however, would.
ikavenomika@reddit
Right, because people didn't make art before profit incentive.

Not to the same level or scale no. Plus even the greats in painting still had sponsors paying for it.
Do you really want to go back to an era where most good art was the sole domain of the wealthy (or the church)?
LichtbringerU@reddit
Certainly not Movies or video games with any kind of budget.
Fun-Brush5136@reddit
Back to cave painting it is then
IcyTheHero@reddit
I mean in this day and age, unless you have highly disposable income (rich ass mfers) who has the ability to create a video game by themselves from scratch, for no reason other than for the love of video games? All funded by them while they also work a job to provide for themselves and families.
We would barely have shot if that were the case
unicyclegamer@reddit
I guess just rich people will be able to make art then
Moist-Ointments@reddit
Yeah these people are like all the other idiots that ruin something and then wonder why it's not there anymore.
Like the neighborhoods where they close the Walmarts or the grocery stores because everybody was stealing from the Walmarts and the grocery stores.
lOOPh0leD@reddit
Or CD and movie stores closed because everyone shops at Walmart. It's an ouroborus.
SweetWolf9769@reddit
....okay, i'll slow it down more, when movie studios stop making money, who is going to produce movies moving forward?
JTP1228@reddit
These guys are going to open their store again.
Acceptable_Job1589@reddit
Was expecting be kind, rewind. This was enjoyable
Early-Surround7413@reddit
AI is taking care of that.
BigMax@reddit
Why would we want to do that?
I like movies... I kind of want them to keep making them.
LatelyPode@reddit
The average person won’t be able to figure it out and many pirated websites are full of harmful ads. Torrenting is too complicated.
However I do fully support this idea and I pirate everything I watch
LBIdockrat@reddit
Lol. Too complicated?
No it isnt.
UgandanPeter@reddit
It’s not necessarily that the process is too complicated, but there’s so many different avenues in which to pirate things and some are more legitimate than others. Some sites are perfectly clean but most are riddled with malware and ads. It’s easy for people to get intimidated by the wealth of options and the potential for something going drastically wrong if they click a bad link.
One_Recover_673@reddit
Yes, it is. Pirate and websites already exist the major majority people don’t do it even though it’s free why because they don’t know how to do it and they don’t know how to deal with all the BS viruses and other crap that come along with it if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Can guarantee you my 80-year-old mother doesn’t stand a chance.
Try4se@reddit
The average person absolutely could figure it out.
LatelyPode@reddit
Would they? I mean, if the average person knows how to pirate why would they buy a subscription?
Dirtbagdownhill@reddit
Coming in here with the "people don't like me because they're intimidated by how smart I am" energy.
Try4se@reddit
It's convenient. When it stops being convenient we go back to piracy.
FortuneGamer@reddit
They might not know how to pirate, but they definitely would be able to figure it out.

JawtisticShark@reddit
Why do we want to crash the movie industry?
Amphernee@reddit
So just steal from artists? I’m guessing you’ve never produced something of value lol
LBIdockrat@reddit
Why... what's your endgame here?
Warm-Room-2625@reddit
Well, it does say crazy ideas
NukeKicker@reddit
Considering how bland any movie operating is now it's not even worth it to Pirate the crap.
Wafflinson@reddit
Crazy shouldn't mean stupid.
This is stupid. There would simply be no media left to pirate.
puffbus420@reddit
I agree mostly pirate old movies and games but pay for brand new ones that are just in theaters or just released. Yes fuck paying $5 to rent a 20 year old movie off a streaming app i alredy pay 20 bucks a month for but pay to see new movies so they have a reason to keep making them
ajwest927@reddit
What about movies that are playing in theaters?
noob_angler@reddit
I asked my 20 year old girlfriend if she knew any pirating sites. She didnt even know what that meant. All she knows is paying for stuff.
TheMikeyMac13@reddit
You should be paid for your work, so should the people who makes films ad TV.
samiwas1@reddit
Well, considering that the movie industry has all but imploded in the US (especially Georgia which was booming just a couple of years ago), You might already have your wish. Sadly though, I and thousands of others are now having to pivot our career paths. A lot of people have lost their jobs. Most years, I spend 200-220 days on set. This year has been under 50. Thankfully, I have a high skill set and can make adjustments, but I gave lots of friends who haven’t worked in over a year.
So I’m going to say no…let’s not do this.
GavPool42@reddit
if no one is paying for a subscription, where would the pirates get content from?
Sud_literate@reddit
While I agree this idea is nice, there’s just no way you’ll ever convince enough people to go through with this: hey friend just go on sketchy websites dodging viruses to find your movies from now and it’s a required process to dodge viruses each time you watch a movie because the sites will get taken down at the end of the day because of companies protecting their interests.
Pirating works right now because the piracy sites aren’t the main focus, if everyone went on piracy sites they would be getting taken down by the hour of going up.
offensivename@reddit
Why is it nice to destroy the movie industry? I don't see the upside.
Sud_literate@reddit
Crashing the movie industry is pretty vague in my opinion but I don’t believe it includes ending the practice of making movies forever; OP mentions subscription services who we can see are already starting to jack up their prices but slightly slower than Xbox, and that is what I wish to see done away with.
Plus I’m really mad that when I go on vacation I can’t continue watching The Office anymore.
offensivename@reddit
And here I thought you guys were being silly. Destroying an entire industry and taking jobs away from thousands is totally worth it to solve the minor annoyance of not being able to watch The Office on vacation.
Sud_literate@reddit
Hmm I think you misunderstand, sure not being able to watch the office on vacation is a minor annoyance that does not warrant taking away people’s jobs. But these subscription services and constant demands for you to use their services how the executives want you to is clearly just an attempt to squeeze money out of customers and it’s seriously starting to hamper how easy it is to use these services anymore.
Like dang I gotta pay monthly and give these companies my location to make sure I’m not “password sharing” but the end result is that there’s more barriers to using a subscription services anymore than pirating.
offensivename@reddit
Yeah. They want to to pay more money for additional benefits. That's life in a for-profit market system (apparently the c word is banned here). It sucks, but it still amounts to a minor annoyance in this case.

Move to Sweden. It's the closest thing
Tripalicious@reddit
Have you ever seen the movie Pirates of the Plains? Underrated movie
RedSunCinema@reddit
If that ever happens, then you can kiss all TV and movie production goodbye and nothing new will ever be made after that. The only thing you'll be able to watch is what currently exists.
murphsmodels@reddit
Not that that's a bad thing. Maybe Hollywood will be scared into making good movies again that people will willingly pay to see in theaters.
RedSunCinema@reddit
Absolutely a bad thing. If there's no more TV and movies, that means no more TV and movie studios, which means everyone will be out of work and no more TV and movie industry. If that happens, whose going to make new movies if Hollywood is completely gone? The answer? No one. No one is going to risk investing in a studio or making new content.
BeebleBoxn@reddit
It wouldn't affect it one bit.
AllMoneyGone@reddit
Not crazy if you don’t want any new movies being produced. Crazy if you expect new content and expect no one to pay for it!
Wanderson90@reddit
AI is going to crash the movie industry. It's only a matter of time.
I believe we are moving towards a tailor-made entertainment era.

anarcurt@reddit
And too many people with ethics
NowFreeToMaim@reddit
Yeah ok, THATS what it is
AstroCaptain@reddit
You think ethics is why piracy went down when Netflix was basically the only streaming service?
Shit_Shepard@reddit
Boomer here is limewire still a thing? Bit torrent? Pirate Bay? I have money now so I’m just not hip widdit.
AstroCaptain@reddit
Technically the limewire name has been used by an unrelated company since around 2020, but other gnutella (the protocol behind limewire) still has multiple different active clients
TTSGM@reddit

Piracy got us into this mess. Surely more piracy will get us out of it
Try4se@reddit
Corporate greed got us into this mess, not piracy
blindreefer@reddit
Well yeah. You’ll never catch me arguing that corporate greed isn’t a huge problem. But stealing the product only made the situation worse. It stopped becoming profitable to make mid level movies and now everything has to be tentpole blockbusters or garbage that goes straight to Netflix.
np.reddit.com/r/movies/s/2nZSPX3Lwk
Try4se@reddit
That just explains the problem with streaming service...

Gaming has largely overcome this problem thanks to people like Gabe who actually understand that good service and making games easily accessible is important and a pretty good deterrent to piracy. Maybe other industries should start learning instead of fragmenting their IPs across dozens of overpriced streaming services.
On a different note, I seriously do also consider switching away from Spotify to more traditional means of buying music directly (Bandcamp). It might be pricier at first, but owning the media you buy does carry a certain convenience too. But I've no idea if something like that could be marketable on a bigger scale for shows/movies, perhaps if it's cheap enough...
