Concerts and road trips. I saw Billy Idol and Joan Jett last month. Drove the Angeles Crest Highway for the first time ever, from La Canada to Wrightwood. That was a great day trip. Everything else seems to be spent on bills, food, and rent.

Serious question... Do you enjoy it less in today's world vs. (picking a timeframe) 15 years ago? I'm not a huge "music" person and never got into the big venue stuff (but I could see how it'd be enjoyable, if that's what you're into) - but is the whole "a gazillion phones and tablets recording the thing unnecessarily" not insufferable as someone that's been a fan for years? In the 2010s, I did have a ton of fun going to small clubs when mash-ups/electropop was a thing. But it was mostly neat because it wasn't as much a "concert" as a dance club where the performer happened to be sick as fuck (and sometimes big acts would sneak in). To name a few, White Panda/Thunderheist/Crystal Castles seemed genuinely pumped that exactly zero people were watching the stage, while we all danced around and drank like maniacs.

it gets worse by the day. i will never understand watching a show through a screen, and the livestreamers are the WORST. most people just wanna snag a few good live shots or video of their favorite songs (that they'll never watch), but these assholes out here blocking the view for the entire set. like bro just wear a go pro on your head, nobody wants to dodge your iphone 39 pro max mondo douche edition for an hour so you can make $3 on tiktok. a few artists i've seen have actually called out the ridiculousness of all the screens in general and asked people to just be present and try to absorb the real world. they're not looking for eyeballs, they just want people to FEEL - singing, dancing, general vibing as a part of something bigger than ourselves.  my BIGGEST pet peeve now though are people who seem to be there just to hang out and have screamversations through the entire set. truly fuck them and i hope they get eternal wedgies. somehow they always end up RIGHT BEHIND ME and ngl i've almost come to blows (as much as a passive aggressive southern girl can). guessing this has gotten progressively worse since covid (along with public behavior in general), but my memories from the beforetimes aren't the best. i don't remember being this unreasonably angered at nearly every show, so i don't think it was a common issue. it's always been a problem at one venue in particular with season ticket holders who bring full ass tables of food and treat it like their own personal wine bar, but that's a bougie atlanta institution that will never change.  imo it's another symptom of the influencer-monetization clout-chasing fomo-inspiration that's plaguing all parts of our lives now. concerts are just another backdrop to flaunt a lifestyle. i'm old and broken and i spend a lot of money for decent seats to enjoy the music and the whole energy of live performances. if you don't give a shit about the show, kindly fuck the fuck off and have your chats in the lobby or lounge or anywhere you're not screaming in my ear to your bestie about that tinder hookup or last week's sportsball game. open to any suggestions for combating these vibe ruiners besides the repeated "movie theater turn and glare" or just screaming over them to no one in particular, "WHO PAYS HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO COME TO A SHOW THEY DON'T WANT TO WATCH" 😁 /rant

(Shrug) Be careful about that... People are allowed to enjoy things in different ways. A couple in our circle of friends were reasonably successful musicians - they'd been in the backing band for a few big/national names, but also did their own indie rock thing. They'd asked us to come out to one of their shows for support, with the specific request to dance around and act like drunk idiots; since it creeped them out to have a bunch of hipsters staring at them for 90 minutes and nodding silently in a smaller venue. Obviously, some douchebag (and you know exactly what he looked/acted like) tried to give us a lecture on proper indie rock concert decorum. I've never seen someone go back in his lonely corner so quickly than when I told him to fuck off (in a bunch more words than that), and yelled, "Gina! Hit us up with a bass solo!" She obliged, and our entire group started jumping around dancing. They genuinely appreciated the hype team, because they weren't about, "Check out the genius depth of our musical talent" and were more, "We want everyone to have the most fun possible"-type people.

having a fully unrelated and very loud conversation through an entire concert is not "enjoying it in a different way." it's a flashing red sign that they'd rather be anywhere else.  sing loud, dance crazy, scream adoration or song requests, sure! be present and appreciative of one of the few pure joys left in this shithole world! there are plenty of ways to enjoy the atmosphere without ruining the experience for everyone around them. it's disrespectful to the artists and the fans.

oh my no, not here. I pregame or not at all. I don't drink much anyway, and fuck a whole lotta $25 watered down cocktails.  i'm also not near any legal rec states and they really love to use uniformed cops for security around here. (and that's already just sunk cost for regular use, speaking of money spent on "experiences.") plus i don't wait for the id check/wristband line to get in, and i'm not leaving my seat once i'm settled. premature old lady energy is strong here.

I was referring more to the cash I had to bring with me to buy stuff in the parking lot. My friends and I did a lot of walking around before the concerts. We would get there for a 7pm concert at like noon or 1pm with a sub from subway and then walk around and talk to people, buy weed, mushrooms or other things from people in the parking lot. That was half the experience (back in highschool) - getting completely obliterated by 2pm and dancing around in the parking lot until 6pm when you start to sober up, then head into the concert
View on Reddit #68479950

lydatl@reddit

that's never really been an option here. rn I can't think of a venue in the city that allows tailgating, most lots are privately owned and the ones that are venue-controlled open maybe an hour pre-show.  outdoor venues in the burbs have a little of this but still limit it to one lot and only a couple hours prior to door time. even then, the only people showing up early are usually pit kids who stand in line if they wanna ride a rail.  few others are gonna hang out in an unshaded gravel lot in 90+ temps at 60% humidity when we already gotta get through 3 hours of concert (might get down to 80 after dark though! summer shows in the south are brutal)

the meadows in Hartford, CT in the 90s were just a massive industrial parking lot connected to another parking lot... and the gravel lot behind it. I went to a lot of DMB concerts that were just one massive smoke fest outside... some started as early as 8am that day for a 7p show, people walking around selling stuff... I remember someone saying "fungus, paper!" and would get people buying it before the show. the merch vendors would hang out and drink with us, (the bootleg shirts, at least) and even concerts like rage and public enemy... that was a massive one. it was just one huge party for 4-10 hours before the shows. lots of hacky sack rings, smoke rings, poi, dancing, music, kegs... it was just an experience in and of itself BEFORE the concert. cops would be on the main street but never bother people unless they tried to leave stoned/inebriated, etc. there were medics on standby in case of people partying to hard. my friend Sean bought a huge nitrous balloon before the show and had a seizure from it (and missed the entire concert!) and when people saw him go down, they called for the paramedics who took him to the hospital. somehow, he got home, there was nothing that we could do, so we went inside and saw the concert. Sean got home on his own the next day. so many concerts there. ozzfest 99, the roots, charlie daniels band, pearl jam, dmb. fn lenny kravitz was a wild show, type o negative. the cranberries... almost forgot that, that was a fun time. I always was on the lawn... never in the seats. Public enemy in 99... it got out of hand; people ripped the fence down and ripped up the lawn and were throwing it at each other... one of the few times I Was legit scared at that place it was going to get swatted haha

I just showed up and they drove us to the ferry, beach, town and bio bay and back. It was amazing, I felt like Moana with all the glowing water

NFL games. We both love football. We can’t have kids. We live in a state far, far away from our favorite teams. My spouse doesn’t like to travel, but i love it. Result? Trips for games- when our teams play each other, when our teams travel abroad, and one almost-Super Bowl run when we went to two playoff games in a season. If our teams ever meet each other in a Super Bowl, there goes our life savings! I’m truly ambivalent about the NFL as a business and social construct, but as much as i hate it, i love, love, love traveling for games. And entire days of football; resting is difficult for me and we’ve spent the majority of our relationship on completely different work schedules, so i like that we have Sundays during the season planned together.

Mostly little joys here and there. A cup of chai or a fancy milkshake. An occasional LEGO set. The latest video game that interests me. A drive to see the autumn leaves change color. A new book to read at night before I go to sleep. Ingredients for a new soup recipe that I found. It really wasn't until earlier this year that I started making enough money to actually have what I would call "experiences." Right now, I have enough money to take an actual, for-real vacation if I wanted to, which still feels like an irresponsible expenditure to me since I haven't had the ability to do that before. I'm just putting any extra money away into my savings account right now because I don't know what the pending economic collapse is going to bring.

Trips with the family. Outdoor/weekend adventures Concerts our son (and us) wants to go to This is always a funny conversation I have with my mom. My husband and I bought a house about 3 years ago. Prior to us owning it, it was a rental where the tenants didn't really take care of yardwork and such. So we have dirt, native plants, and weeds that grow in the front and back yard. My mom makes many comments about it, I remind her it's $2000 (roughly) to fix them up, and right now we are spending that money (and time) on trips and experiences for our son who is a senior this year and will be leaving us soon. She always makes a stink face about it because "what would the neighbors think". IDGAF what they think. We trim it down and we are good until we fix it (also buying a $30 bag of clover seeds to spread and make a clover lawn also made her make a stink face)
View on Reddit #68427439

nnndude@reddit

When I start to feel ashamed of my minimal-effort lawn, I like to think about how truly wasteful it is to maintain a proper yard with lush, thick green grass. So many people around the world who have trouble accessing clean drinking water and here we are wasting untold gallons on what’s nothing more than a vanity project.
View on Reddit #68431210

wickedcrazybitch@reddit

I hate grass. We eventually are going with clover and native plants, rocks and other eco friendly/low-no water landscape. The neighbors around us have all full lawns. They are also retired who grew up with "big lawns to keep up with the Jones" and tend to their yards all day. No thanks

Even when we fly overseas we road trip to different destinations... and sample the local food! 🤤 Sometimes the "along the way" turns out to be more memorable than the destination! Haunted houses. In October we usually go to Orlando for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal. Every other weekend up to Halloween we go to a handful of haunted houses near us. Concerts and theater! We grab tickets to big concerts off of vet tix all the time, and we also like to go down to the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans to see Off Broadway shows.

That place doubled in value in 3 years, so we sold and moved across country. Bought and sold again some years later and moved across country one more time. That first place was at the top of our budget and in an up and coming area. We were broke for most of those years. We saved, sacrificed and worked hard to afford that place and it paid off. We refinanced for a lower our rate and found out our house value doubled. Thanks Obama!

By the time we get to the venue, Rancid was finishing up their last song. By the time we get through security and to our seats pumpkins started playing. This concert had the fastest change over I have ever seen Only to find out they double sold our seats. We bought from ticketmaster, the day the tickets went on sale. We did get moved up but still shitty. End rant

Live music. I go to probably 5-6 shows a month. Mostly local stuff, but I just got back from Furnace Fest in Alabama. Was there from 10/1 - 10/6. Saw shows every day for 5 days straight.

Mostly Weed and munchies, DVDs and Blu-Rays for my home theater and that's usually used ones. I'm capitalizing on people that moved on to streaming or 4K. On the rare occasion concerts and vacations but I'm quite happy a lot of the time with staycations and watching official and fan shot concerts in high def at home these days.

Concerts. Kids and i go to medium to small concerts at least once a month. Normally pay around 45 a ticket tops. Though for my sons bday we just flew to see Deftones, because it was the fucking Deftones! We had points for plane tickets and another credit card had discount tickets. Two tickets were same price as one about 2 hrs away from us. Not an even draw but got close.

Most money - Vacations. Usually only one big trip a year with smaller stuff where we can fit it in. We've done several two week roadtrips in my folks RV out west. Lots of trips to New York. Themeparks (although we're thankfully aging out of that one mostly.) Trips to the beach (half-day's drive for us.) Best money - Concerts! I've gotten back into new music in a *big* way since the pandemic. Probably 90% of what I listen to now is new/new-to-me music from mostly smaller/rising groups from the last 5-10 years or so. And those type of acts it doesn't cost much at all to see. Plus it's bonding point with my oldest daughter. She'll go with me to some of my shows, I'll go with her to some of hers. And I've even gone solo to some. We'll share music with each other. Right now I'm on track for 14-16 shows this year, but I'll probably add a few more. And I already have tix for 2 shows next year. It's a relatively affordable thing we can regularly do and look forward to. And in the lead-up/follow-up you get the enjoyment of listening to that band/artist more. Just a great nearly year-round source of happiness.

Do medical bills count? What about bills like electricity and heat? What about the farmers market? It could be considered “things” AND an experience. Pedicures? Netflix? The little things are the bulk of it. But this year i went to 3 Mariners games , a concert, an alumni event, and Hawaii twice. But that’s more events/travel than I’ve done in the last 7 years combined.

Our lake place. Yes it’s a combination of material things like a boat and a jet ski, but the experiences or what we go for. With three kids, I wanted them to have as close to a childhood like mine. The park we are in offers that….they all ride bikes with their friends, they play at each other‘s campers, we have a no Internet rule up there. Sometimes I’ll get asked “why don’t we ever go to Disney World”?? I just respond “do you like the lake? Do you like going up there and boating and being with your friends?” The answer is always yes. Given that a summer’s worth of activities equals out to the price of a decent Disney vacation, I call that a fair trade.
