Do y'all form emotional attachments to your cars?

I have a car that I'm really attached towards. Always love driving it around and admire it when I stop to get a cup of coffee somewhere. It's nothing special really but it's been my happiness, joy, pride and sanity since childhood. I sorta see it as my partner, it keeps me safe, keeps me happy, keeps me humble and never fails to deliver some serious acceleration when I want it. I raced the car alot of times and I spent countless hours secretly tinkering with it to make it my ride and mine alone. Do you guys have the same relationship with your cars?

I still remember my first car with fond memories. A red 1994 Chevrolet Lumina sedan. Got it for a steal from a guy in my church. It got me through high school and college.
One day, I realize it would cost me $1700 to fix a major mechanical issue with the engine and the car was only worth $300 blue book value.
So I gave in and went to the local Chevy dealership and traded it in for a used Impala in much better shape.
That day, I still remember taking all my stuff out of the Lumina, and closing that door for the last time, with a bit of sadness. But I knew all life chapters come to an end sometime.

My first car was a 2011 Ford edge SEL 3.5 m V6. It’s little car that said the day that it finished production or whatever essentially it’s birthday was May 12, 2011 my birthday. I missed that car a lot and if I still had it, I’d still be driving and it was great. It was a lot cheaper. I did still have it. I would’ve probably bought an older Porsche 911 996 second power for fun.
Salamasalam0912@reddit
I had this when I was a child as well, i developed emotions towards our family cars, and sometimes even spoke to the car (you can call me crazy lol) Ever since I started owning my own car, it’s like my girlfriend, I spend money on quality fluids and parts for her, I go for solo rides and see it as a date. When I’m stressed with life, I go for a drive and it calms me down just to be sitting behind the wheels of my car. I care about my car a lot more than I care about people, cars don’t cheat and don’t break hearts.
SkylineFTW97@reddit
I do. Hard not to with the blood, sweat, and tears from doing your own repairs and fixing up cheap beaters.

When you are working on the car - "You god damned mother fucker I'll push you off a god damn cliff you bitch"
When the car is fixed "I love this car, I wouldn't dream of giving it up."
Salamasalam0912@reddit
I literally had this yesterday when changing my oil. My bolt for my skid plate was both rusty and stripped and I spent a full hour on it and didn’t open, I even punched the bumper when I was cursing the car😂 but good point was that this bolt was on the corner so i just rotated the skid plate and did the oil change in an awkward position. After I finished I was apologizing to my car and saying how much I love her despite the trouble she gives me when working on her😍😂

Oh yeah. Daily drivers not so much, but definitely somewhat if it's one I really like. My Mustang very much so. With my first one I always joked that if it ever gets totaled then I hope I die in the crash. I'm glad that didn't actually come true lol but having it totaled was heartbreaking.

I traded in a 2002 xlt F150 RWD with the 4.6L triton for a 2013 Fx4 3.5 ecoboost a few months ago. The new truck is so much nicer in every way and has everything I needed. But I still miss my old girl every day. She took me through high school, took me and my ex places, sounded amazing and had good power. That old truck will always be my first love and I will never stop missing it. I'm only now starting to get attached to the new truck. It's got way more power, heat and ac works, having 4wd is amazing where I live and she rides like a dream, but i'd take back my old girl in a heartbeat, probably couldn't give up the new truck though.
TurboLag23@reddit
Yes absolutely. Some more than others, and I find it’s all dependent on how much “personality” the car has.
Our BRZ and our Insight have much stronger personalities. The BRZ is like a very nimble but extremely jumpy race horse; it’ll tell you when it’s not happy, and that’s pretty much any time you’re not letting it run wild. Meanwhile the Insight is like an old 15lb mini-dog with a permanently hanging tongue and a weird, silly bark that just wants to go for another walk, and occasionally needs some old-man work done but you pay the vet bill without even looking at the amount. And I’ve been on the fence about selling both at various points…. I just cannot bring myself to do it.
Our Integra is an absolutely amazing car, but it just doesn’t quite have that perfect imperfection and resultant personality to where I’ve quite personified it the same way. It doesn’t smack me over the head when I pause between shifts like the BRZ does. It doesn’t have all the quirks of the Insight. It doesn’t
And our kit car? I’ve got probably over 500 hours into building it and it’s not done yet. I’m not going to lie…. I currently have zero emotional attachment to it whatsoever. I’m infinitely thankful for the great times I’ve been able to share with friends helping build it, and the therapeutic obsessing through the whole build process, and all the stuff I’ve learned putting a car together from a pile of parts. But I felt more sentimental for the donor car having only driven it 10 miles before dismantling it. Once it finally runs and drives, that’s when I’ll probably become severely attached. Because when it’s done, that car will probably have more personality than every new car sold in the last 10 years - put together. Think honey badger that raided a pharmacy’s Adderall stash.
Javier1019@reddit
I owned 4 cars my whole life. 3 of them I still have 1 of them was totaled… I love all of them. Even miss the totaled one (which later my fourth car was a different trim of that car; totally different car)
Outside-Rain-7410@reddit
Yes. Hard not to form an attachment to something you’ve worked long and hard for, especially if it was an aspirational vehicle for you. Sometimes I catch myself sitting in the garage with a drink, admiring the lines on the car (especially after a wash and wax, end of the working day or week).
Enjoy your car and the memories that come from your ownership experience, whatever it may be!
SlobMyKnob1@reddit
Absolutely. When my truck got totaled I was devastated. That thing was my pride and joy. Took great care of it and it took care of me from dump runs to road trips. I’ll definitely miss that truck
OverallManagement824@reddit
Nope. Usually just my motorcycles. I even write songs about them. But a car? Nah, it's a soulless appliance.
Huskerdu4u@reddit
Well, let see, my 70 Monte was bought right before I was born. It was my dad’s daily until ‘78. First fast car I rode in, Big Block 4 speed (factory). The engine was stolen while getting rebuilt. So I’ve spent my whole life with that car. It’s been mine since ‘97. With a family and life…. I’ve been working on it since 2018? Drove it last fall for the first time. This summer my bride and I drove in the power tour on our 30th anniversary, two weeks later the car ate its cam. So we are back to work. I have that and a hot rod that I built nearly from scratch. Add in an 89 Silverado and yeah they own my heart. My wife knows, she doesn’t have to worry about cheating, Marketplace that’s the worry!
RadioFriar@reddit
Sold a car I loved in 2018 because my triplets were getting drivers licenses. Was not the car I wanted as an extra car on my insurance, but we needed a couple cars for them to drive. I always missed that car. In 2023, I saw it for sale. I showed my wife. She said, “ I’ve been hearing about this car for five straight years now. If they come down to the right price, go get your car back.” It is now back in my garage.
WildKarrdesEmporium@reddit
I used to, when I had nice cars. Don't have a nice car now though, so it's easier to not care.

I like my diesel corolla. It always gets me from point 1 to 2 and has never had any failures. It's a bit of a boring car but since it's a diesel it accelerates surprisingly well for only being 90hp. I hope to get a GR Supra once I can move to a country that pays good wages and actually sells the car, but until then the corolla's gonna be my ride.
sebastiand1@reddit

PolizeiW124-Guy@reddit
I love my old battered car.
Bought her off a friend whose company went into bankruptcy as she knew it would be sold for pennies and abused. Always drooled over her if I went to the unit and she was sat there waiting.
I know every little quirk and noise she makes, tinkering about helped me keep busy while I was battling depression, she ain’t mint, has a few rust spots but generally solid, but 34 years old, think they add character.
Grouchy_Vast_394@reddit (OP)
I would love to hear what your car is. I also do get distracted by my car and there were instances where I dropped something I was holding when I saw my car in a sunset with the light hitting the car in just the right angle. My car also helped me overcome alot of problems and never really gave me a fat repair bill despite it being german(they always need to be pampered like a baby). Im just a kid right now and I only have about 2 years of driving experience. How did you develop feelings for your car? I would like to hear that too
PolizeiW124-Guy@reddit
It’s a 1991 W124 Mercedes and as my nickname suggests, it’s wearing polizei livery of the era.
It was sourced for an episode of top gear, by my friend who supplied emergency vehicles and equipment for film and tv, she’s very adhd and sourced loads of bits and pieces like the uniform and researched it.
Always used to admire her in the unit in its “feeling sorry for itself” state, reminded me of myself.
Sometimes I hate the thought of the work needed, the rust and sourcing parts, but, she’s a reliable old bus, never let me down and the looks from people is fantastic.
I work on newer cars everyday, every once in a while I get my hands on an older car and they just ooze character, newer cars are just soulless drones.
I know if I’m feeling crap, I can fire up the merc, throw on some rammstein and go for a blast. I do love looking back after parking up, always makes me smile.
Quriious@reddit
Yeah love for your own car is something that is pure and can't be explained ❤️

I still have my 87' IROC I bought when I was 14 (9yrs) after saving all my birthday money. I was the third generation of my family to drive my first car, a '72 Ford Gran Torino station wagon. Third generation but fifth driver out of the three.
It has the 351 cleveland under the hood and after an obligatory engine rebuild after my brother drove it for a year (plus some body work, lol), I used to drag race it against (stock) camaros and other "sports" cars driven by silver spoons.

Short answer: yes.
Right now I have a Challenger I love. I put on around 3.5k miles per month for work with it. Then, when the opportunity is there, I’ll drive around for fun when I can. I love taking care of it, modding it (mostly cosmetic, some simple non-cosmetic), and just get joy from being in it. I wash her frequently and wax/polish more than I have other cars. It’s the first car I don’t plan to trade in. I’ll drive until it’s no longer practical and then will restore it or maintain it for a fun project car long term. I want to be Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino when I am old.

After a couple of meh cars my next love was a 1993 Lincoln Town car. everything after that was kind of meh except for my 2010 Ford F150 Lariat crew cab which I loved. Just my '94 Jeep Cherokee XJ, which is pretty much scrap now that the frame rusted through. I've had it since 2002, and have a lot of great memories and experiences with it. It's been one of the most reliable and easy to maintain vehicles I've ever owned. But now, it's sitting in the driveway and would be a deathtrap to get back out on the road. I hate equating it to making a call to vet to have a pet put down, but I'm really having trouble making a call to one of those "cash for your junk vehicle" places. I've done everything I can to possible repair that frame, but I don't have the tool, know-how, time, space to make it better. I loved that Jeep. :(

HungryHungryMarmot@reddit
If you haven’t already seen it, check out The Wonder Years, especially the episode “The Family Car”. Dad desperately tries to keep the family car running, even though it is clearly on its last legs.
The end of that episode hits really hard, with the old car being towed away to Neil Young’s “Long May You Run”. Gets me every time!

Awwww that song always makes cry too when used in a sentimental way...

my cars aren't alive but I love them about as much as you can love something that isn't alive
it's like a guitar or a gun, they're incredibly powerful pieces of technology that take a lot of time to learn and master. through that mastery you develop an attachment born out of familiarity and trust, and unlike people it's very rare that the trust is betrayed.
all this said though, inanimate objects are just that, inanimate. make sure to take care of the living world around you before focusing on your cars✌️

Well said thanks 😍

Hell yeah. I had 3 Mustang GTs. Bringing them home off the lot fel like when a mom,/dad brings their newborn home from the maternity ward. They were my babies, almost.

Yes, I am emotionally attached to the Volvo 544 that I learned to drive on fifty years ago and still drive. It started life as my dad’s technician’s car in 1964 and became my dad’s car in 1972 when it was wrecked and rebuilt the first time, then I got it in 1981 after it had been wrecked and rebuilt a second time. It keeps changing but it’s still the same car.
I’m also emotionally attached to my dad’s bicycle that he rode to work in 1964 and that I still ride to work (at the same place) now.

I have an attachment to my compact pickup truck. I’d rather drop $1000 on a modification job on my pickup truck than spend $1000 on a woman. My pickup won’t argue with me or give me shit. A woman will. My pickup truck won’t abandon me. A woman will. My pickup truck won’t cheat on me. A woman will. So far I’ve invested or spent at least $25,000 or so on customization or modification jobs on my pickup truck ever since I bought it brand new off the lot in May 2020. I’m never getting rid of it, trading it in or selling it privately. All I have to do is maintain it and keep it in tip top shape. Which, I have done and do. No woman will ever come between me and my pickup truck. Most women don’t like this, but, I don’t care.

The longer the run the more I get attached. A 2003 at the moment. 236k & starting to think she's a keeper.

I love and hate my jeep wrangler rubicon. Having selectable lockers on the ridiculous earthwork sites where I spend 12 hours a day is amazing but the stupid small stuff that goes wrong kills me without time to fix it.

With the last couple of cars i didn't, i just wanted transportation. With my current car? A K11 Micra called Mike? Definitely. It's cute, it's fun. It drives okay-ish. And i just feel like we're gonna be friends for a long time lol.
ici5@reddit
Same but a Kia Soul named Yoshi. I get laughed at for driving it but fuck them. At least mine is reliable.
Sad_Bodybuilder_186@reddit
That's a lovely name!
I also get ridiculed, people calling it a shitbox and a beater. And while it's a 28 Year old car and it doesn't have electric windows and no infotainment system and a non-functioning A/C. I DO get almost zero repair bills. And i get 50 MPG all day, every day.
Like my MOT ran out 4 Days after i bought it, for $395. Hence why it was so cheap. Yet the MOT cost was $35 for the inspection and $19 for a drive shaft cover, that's it.

I also named by car but since I was a child while I was naming it, its quite a bit cringe. She's a pearl white 2013 Audi Q3 2.0L TDI, the top variant they could offer with that punchy 7 speed S tronic transmission. Named her "Snowblaze" when I was a kid at the age of 11 when I first met the car. It's been a 9 year bond ever since. Kinda cringe but, I needed some people to relate to. I thought I was kinda weird for caring about a car like this.
Lubi3chill@reddit
Only to my first car - mk2 golf. There is just no car like it really. I actually cried a bit when I sold it.
BrandonW77@reddit
Absolutely. A car is a family member, it's by your side for so many adventures and memories.
Plus-Mama-4515@reddit
Depends on the car. I definitely got attached to my sequoia. We named it the hippo because it was big and grey. It was sad when it had to go to the scrap yard(Toyota frame). Husband got me an Acura TL after that and I absolutely hated it. I’m grateful I’m back in an suv. Still don’t love my suburban as much as my hippo though
Xeonmelody@reddit
I do. With all the blood, sweat, and gears that go into it. And no, its not a typo.
doc_55lk@reddit
Yes. With all of them (except our newest, because it's too new to form any connection yet).
I think one of the defining characteristics of a car person is that they can form an emotional attachment to their car.
Solid_Enthusiasm550@reddit
I do, I got my truck the same day my childhood dog died.
I just wish I could find another one in good shape. I want to build it differently than I am doing to mine now.
bigcee42@reddit
Ugh way too much.

“We've been through some things together With trunks of memories, still to come We found things to do in stormy weather Long may you run”
That song hits hard.
Savings_Public4217@reddit
Absolutely. I've put 160000km on my truck in the past 5.5 years, and I've fully rebuilt my car almost from the ground up (I've quite literally touched every single bolt on it). It's hard not to form an attachment to them
NCSUGrad2012@reddit
I don’t. In fact some cars I’ve even been happy to see go, lol
RollofDuctTape@reddit
If by emotional attachment you mean “joy,” yea. The same way people love sports and music I love my car.
Captain_Aizen@reddit
Sometimes. I've had a couple of cars I felt attached to and I've had many where I didn't
HungryHungryMarmot@reddit
Yes! Not like I would with a lover, but my cars are part of so many memories. Road trips, cross country moves, roadside breakdowns, DIY repairs, the little quirks that develop as it ages, and just generally the way the car sounds and feels when you drive it.
I don’t name my cars or personify them, but I generally hold on to them for many years. I also tend to choose cars that I am passionate about (vs. practical appliance cars). Some level of attachment is inevitable.
Grouchy_Vast_394@reddit (OP)
I tend to name my cars and give them quirky little personalities. But I really appreciate you sharing your story. It makes me happy I'm not alone in this
