I donated to KDE's non-profit organization! Pretty wholesome and good process I think. Are you a KDE Plasma user?

Any thoughts anyone?

Love KDE. Fedora with KDE stopped my distro hopping. I didn't mind gnome when I first started on Pop! OS but I can't stand gnome in general now. I find that for me, "windows but without the nonsense" is a pretty good desktop design for me. KDE with minor tweaks feels like what windows should be when it comes to graphical desktop.
Sajeg@reddit
Yes exactly. For a while I used gnome on my laptop and Plasma on PC, but then when I needed to use the Laptop more I couldn't stand gnome and it's lack of everyday features so I switched to Plasma.
Now I'm trying Hyprland, because I wanted to try a tiling window manager.
Of course all on Fedora <3. Much Love to KDE and Fedora.

Gnome just feels sloppy and jank to me. I liked it when I first started using linux on popos but can't stand any other implementation. Vanilla gnome just feels downright unusable.
caindfirstblood@reddit
Unfortunately not, I'm on Gnome
Storyshift-Chara-ewe@reddit
Saying unfortunately is pretty accurate for using GNOME
sobolrocket@reddit
Yep, and I'm donating too. 🥰

KDE Plasma is bloated. I used it then switched to Gnome, then G. Classic, then G. Flashback, then to XFCE and stayed on XFCE.
Donating to anything FOSS is good. You support a good cause.

"KDE is bloated...I switched to gnome"
"My BMW was too expensive, so I bought a mclaren"
VzOQzdzfkb@reddit
Both Plasma and Gnome are bloated yes. But according to many, Plasma is most bloated. Plus i was on a WM hopping phase. Someone tried to compare all WMs and provided a graph showing which WMs consume which amount of RAM.

The image is from https://l3net.wordpress.com/2013/03/17/a-memory-comparison-of-light-linux-desktops/
Sixcoup@reddit
You realise your screenshot are more than 10 years old ? We had two major versions of plasma since then.
Your article is also comparing things that are radically different. Plasma is a desktop environment, and it's being compared to mainly window managers.. It's like comparing the weight of a bike to a car. Yes the bike is much lighter, but it also doesn't have a roof to protects you from the rain, it doesn't allow to take 4 other people with you, it doesn't have AC or heater for summer/winter etc. Looking at the memory usage of Kwin would be a much better comparaison.
Also who the fuck care about ram usage in 2025 anyway ? All linux DE use so little compared to what all computer have nowadays. Unless you're working with small budget laptop that are more than 10 years old, ram suage from a linux DE no matter which one, really shouldn't be something you should concern yourself with.
i_h8_yellow_mustard@reddit
Bloat is not just RAM use. Gnome has been demonstrably harder on CPUs in my experience than KDE has been. Gnome also needs extensions to be useful on a desktop in my opinion, so that makes the situation worse.
What people define as bloat will differ. You're evidently a fan of WMs, so you'll probably view full DEs as bloated by nature. I don't personally dig WMs, so I wouldn't. I don't see WMs as non-functional by any means, but most people would see them as primitive and not useful. You all need to accept the fact that the majority of computer users want more than the functionality that a WM on its own provides. WM users are a minority of a minority of computer users (that being people who use a unix-like OS to begin with. Hell, the most popular Unix-like OS is MacOS which doesn't even follow the philosophy of other ones like Linux or BSD).
The linked article is from 2013, 12 years ago. That may as well be an eternity in terms of computers, and this information as a result is essentially useless. I had never even heard of linux until around 2012, and didn't personally use it on my own machine until 2022. I'm not going to pretend I'm a linux expert, but I've done a good bit of exploration and experimentation. I've never heard of most of these WMs, and the majority of them are straight out of the 90s. This is information that is useful for a minority of a minority of a minority of computer users.

KDE Plasma is loved by VAST numbers of people. Computers are not slow (unless its 12-15 years old) and can handle things some people call bloat. But plasma is awesome. And I think most people would enjoy it. If you like XFCE that's cool too.
0riginal-Syn@reddit
They are one of the better-run and more transparent organizations. I have quite a bit of respect for them. That does not mean they are without issue, but everyone has that. I wish the Gnome Foundation could take some notes from them at the organization level. This is not talking about the desktop environment / sofware of the two, as they are two different and valid takes on it.
secular-human-12006@reddit (OP)
I dislike gnome. To put it in low key way. But yes people can use all kinds of things even if I think they shouldn't. I would say KDE plasma, cinnamon, xfce, MATE, etc are all better than modern gnome. And which one of those you might want depends on what your looking for. Of course I'm a plasma person myself. But those other ones can be good too, if that's what you want.
0riginal-Syn@reddit
Yes I prefer and use Plasma as well. Was just trying to stay out of the back and forth on the desktop since it is so subject and can get into territorial type arguments.
secular-human-12006@reddit (OP)
I see.
Puzzled_Hamster58@reddit
Gnome desktop icons is the stupidest thing I have ever delt with lol . (I’m talking gnome in current Ubuntu)
mitsosseundscharf@reddit
What issues does the KDE e.V. have?
0riginal-Syn@reddit
It was more a generalized "no one perfect" than anything. Most of the complaints, which are really just due to different POVs are generally around some decisions, like the LTS edition, where leadership is more supportive than directive, sometimes a perceived conflict of interest. These are straight from discussions, even among developers and the leadership team.
secular-human-12006@reddit (OP)
KDE e.V. and KDE plasma is general is great. There are some many corporations and things in the world that do messed up shit; I can't really nitpit on KDE e.V. As far as I know this an non-profit it were a person I would say is a good person. Not perfect, but not evil like Google (which is a corporation but same idea).
0riginal-Syn@reddit
Absolutely, which is why I am happy to be an annual financial contributor. It is even on auto for them. I have also worked on a few projects in the past, but that was pretty distant ago. I still remember installing the very first release of KDE, before Plasma was even a thought.
secular-human-12006@reddit (OP)
you an OG. I totally get that. Been in it a long time. Anyway. sounds good carry one.
whosdr@reddit
I don't use KDE, I don't have the money to donate.
Best I can do is offer some suggestions every now and then. Every time I touch KDE, it's on a big shiny new version and I basically forgot how to do anything. So I try to set it up, send them feedback when I encounter friction.
Amazingly a lot of those areas I did have issues with early on were smoothed out considerably.
I still think the settings to change desktop sounds is in a weird place though.
Settings - Notifications - System Notifications. Nothing says sound/noise, and it's a sub-menu so can't be found directly via search bar. Feels like one of those "if you know" situations.
0riginal-Syn@reddit
Nothing wrong with that. There are many ways to contribute, financial being just one.
secular-human-12006@reddit (OP)
I've 95% sure having used KDE off and on (till I switched to linux and always use it now) for over 5 years. Even changing from plasma 5 to 6- and back to 5 (distro hop stuff) I was never confused. Sometimes things adjust, but that don't become hard to understand or work out. I've not had this issue at all. As for before plasma 5 well that was a very long time ago and before my time in linux. I actually find that is easy to understand. Maybe if you don't use KDE plasma much it may not be (although even I switched to linux videos folks seem to get it or work it out).
Isofruit@reddit
Donating to FOSS is solid, doing it in a reoccurring manner is better. Stable revenue streams are preferable over volatile ones.
As for the desktop, I donate to Gnome instead of KDE, as that is my desktop of choice.
0riginal-Syn@reddit
And that is totally fine. I think it is great to donate, if you can, to the projects that you get benefit from.
OrganizationShot5860@reddit
I could not donate from my location but I really want to, they have been doing phenomenal work with KDE Plasma 6 in my opinion.
secular-human-12006@reddit (OP)
hi maybe we can chat? Talk about linux or something? also hi
blackcain@reddit
Excellent! Please donate - they can use the money.
MMOnsterPost@reddit
KDE Plasma 6 is a beautiful babe DE!
lKrauzer@reddit
No, I use GNOME
throwaway89124193@reddit
No but it's very nice that you've done so
Chronigan2@reddit
What do you mean by wholesome?
Rocky_boy996@reddit
Don’t you think donating in general is wholesome?
amarao_san@reddit
It's a bit more complicated. For small personal preferences - yes (favorite singer, a guy doing unnecessary but cool stuff).
For larger, infrastructural grade or essential things (health, life, etc), I prefer to use 'mandatory donations' gathered by the government.
Talk to your MP.
TheLastTreeOctopus@reddit
Sure, it's a wholesome act. But I think the question is what was wholsome about the process?
Rocky_boy996@reddit
I get it now, he just donated to KDE but there was nothing special about the process it’s self
Time-Bowler-2130@reddit
It's the feeleng u get after seeing your money in the donation list ¦3
secular-human-12006@reddit (OP)
Honestly I had to use a word for this post and the first post got auto moderated so I needed words that aren't generic. But its not not wholesome. So its fine.
Lorian0x7@reddit
Moderation is truly a joke nowadays.
cainhurstcat@reddit
Did so as well just two days before, and it's pretty simple and straightforward. It's also a good feeling, as it feels like giving my money to SOMEONE who actually needs it and cares about it instead of some faceless multi-billion dollar company.
Not that I would know anyone of the people involved in KDE, but it's just different from buying a Windows license, you know.
DrKEdG@reddit
I tried donating them, but payments are not possible from India for some reason.
Rocky_boy996@reddit
No, im not. I use GNOME with custom extensions — however I do use some KDE apps like Konqueror and KMines
