They let anyone do flatbed these days.
Definitelyabotnocap@reddit
This shit makes me want to become a DOT officer. I'd go over every nut and bolt on that truck.
ChaseJulien@reddit
I hope that is a roll of some type of low density material and not a steel coil.
Mindless_Pandemic@reddit (OP)
Over 46,000lbs. The little cheap coil racks under the board are only rated for 10,000lbs each.
Ep1cR4g3@reddit
Not many people know the racks are only 10k šš
Actual_Handle_3@reddit
Coil racks have no wll, and they technically are not securement devices. Their function is to keep dunnage from moving. That being said, I will use 1 for every 10,000 pounds, except shotgun where I use coil blocks. I'll use 4 for light coils and 6 for heavy coils.
ChaseJulien@reddit
That dunnage looks like softwood, and they havenāt been beveled to support the coil properly.
Mindless_Pandemic@reddit (OP)
I'm not sure anything on this entire load is right lol.
gilligan1050@reddit
Iāve heard the steel coil song and I know how dangerous they are.
truckingham@reddit
I would say the fact that the coils say cliffs on them suggest otherwise
Canelosaurio@reddit
Giant balsa wood wheel all wrapped up. *fingers crossed
mike15835@reddit
It says Cliffs, that's steel. There's one in Butler, PA. That I've seen that logo.
I hope I'm not sharing a road with him.
Quiet_Molasses_3362@reddit
Ugh. Thats probably a 40k + coil. Means 4 to 6 coil racks, 6 to 8 chains. Straps just no.
Hardwood dunnage. Not some fucking pine 4x4s.
But whatever gets it there cheaper. Till you understand why it's called suicide coil
GammaXi532@reddit
Why not eyes to the sky?
Actual_Handle_3@reddit
It's logistically difficult. Very few place have lift trucks that can handle north of 40,000 to unload, and the pallet they would need to be on would have to be super heavy duty. I haul to can manufacturers, and the max they usually get for skidded coils is 23,000. As far as securement, I'll take a stand up coil over a skidded coil every day! They are much easier to secure properly than skidded.
Mooshroomey@reddit
Easier to load/unload with the hole horizontal. Lying it on its side risks damaging a lot of the edge of the coil on the side making contact. Thereās a lot of tension in the coil which is at risk of being released when laid flat if the truck hits a bump (like explosive force).
MissPoe213@reddit
Most likely being unloaded with overhead C-hook
bobmonkeyclown@reddit
Four 3/8 grade 70 chains will get you 26,400 lbs of securement if you use two spools per which is more than enough. One coil rack per 10k lbs so 4 racks. Also use coil pads.Ā
If you use 5/16 grade 70 chains, you'd need 5 to get just a bit over the minimum WLL.Ā
MercWithaMouse@reddit
I have no idea what you guys are talking about but im here for it.
JColeTheWheelMan@reddit
I do flatbed work but it's all well casing and barrite pallets etc. I almost never touch chains. I should really take a course on chains because reading this makes me know what I don't know.
Live-Door3408@reddit
What u should really worry about is if your company sticks u with nothing but busted up ratchet binders like Roehl did to me. I stg Iād shuffle through 5 ratched binders before I found one that actually worked lol. I later found out that bicycle chain lube works great
bobmonkeyclown@reddit
I carry revolvers in the truck so I have a lot of gun oil. I just put a few drops every time I use a ratchet binder. Little bit of oil or grease goes a long way.Ā
JColeTheWheelMan@reddit
I own the company, so whatever I choose is what I get.
Live-Door3408@reddit
Well u lucky bastard
bobmonkeyclown@reddit
Info is pretry accessible. Most part grade 70 3/8 will cover everything, sometimes you might have to remove the hook to fit through attachment points meant for a 5/16 chain. Its worth it to just have 3/8 chains though. Once you do equipment and alot of heavier stuff, its worth it to invest in 1/2 chains.
I hauled a lot of coils at my first company and they only gave us 5/16 chains and snap binders. So when I got my own truck I said screw it and went all 3/8 with a mix of recoilless snap binders and ratcher binders. Ā
d1duck2020@reddit
If you ever have questions, ask here. Everyone will talk shit and then someone help you. I got my license in 93 and never hauled a coil, either.
JColeTheWheelMan@reddit
Oh I've hauled coils. But mine come in a shipping tote that gets chained down and then I use 5 straps on the coil itself. They're also something like 18' high when loaded. I cant even fuel up unless it's somewhere I can nose in.
trucksarekewl@reddit
You'd be surprised at how many shitty securements are riding alongside you under a tarp
InvestigatorBroad114@reddit
The amount of shitty securements Iāve seen alone on something that isnāt tartedā¦lol. You know itās a shit securement job when they ātarpā it and half the damn tarp is flapping in the wind
PShubbs91@reddit
I will say, I've tarped loads, put a fuck ton of bungies, and put straps on the flaps and cranked them down with all my fatass 300lb weight, and still seen the tarp come basically completely off my load. These things weigh over 100lbs but a slight breeze hits it and you would think it weighed 2lbs.

West-Raccoon-2043@reddit
Better than having tires go all over the Ohio Turnpike because someone didnāt secure the tires good enough while hauling flatbeds on a flatbed. I had one bounced like a foot away from my truck and bounced over top of it. Scared me so bad I had to stop at the next service plaza
ggKnoxx@reddit
Or even a conestoga. Canāt tell you how many times Iāve seen a guy pull his curtains back and have 2 chains on a 40k+ coil. (We got there at the same time.)
Truckin_Dave@reddit
I took pictures of an elevator load that wasnāt strapped down from York pa to Louisville Kentucky. The driver never hauled conestoga or flatbeds before. He got called saying this load was ready for pickup, hooked to it and went on his way. Never once looked at the load.
ceeday2156@reddit
Saw a guy haul a full conestoga of mulch pallets without a single strap. Im guessing he got fired because that stoga frame was LEANING after they finally figured out how to unload him
TebFord@reddit
In the conestogas too. Thereās salt plants in Lyons KS that we haul salt out of to get back home. I see conestoga guys all the time setting 22 2000# pallets of salt on their deck and just closing the tarp without strap one.
GloatGoat@reddit
Iām doing my cdl school right not. Hazmat on monday. What did he do wrong here?
Mindless_Pandemic@reddit (OP)
Everything except the one chain.
AGayForDeSane@reddit
You can be the best and most aware driver on the highway following every traffic rules but then, a stupid fuck like these comes out of nowhere with its poorly secured cargo, causes an accident and fuck up your life instantly.
Naniallea@reddit
Hello! Someone with no experience in what's going on here but I'm interested in why this isn't good enough?
Can someone in the business explain this to me like I'm 5 plz!
EvolZippo@reddit
This looks like about half the straps, plus shoddy safety measures. So imagine this truck is going a decent clip. This impossibly heavy roll of metal, will break loose, crush the truck cab, then roll forward. It will flatten every vehicle, person, animal or structure. It will crash through buildings and keep going, until it runs out of momentum. A literal nightmare, if some idiot break-checks this trucker for a chuckle.
Frogspoison@reddit
Gonna be honest - the FMCSA needs to adopt NY's Metal Coil endorsement and expand on it - Flatbed endorsements nationwide.
LanceWasHere@reddit
Wait⦠other states donāt have real rules about it? Iām from New York and know about the endorsement. I just assumed other states had similar rules.
Frogspoison@reddit
Yea, NY is the ONLY state to require an endorsement for Metal Coils as well as towing.
LanceWasHere@reddit
WHAT!!?ā½! You mean nobody else has licensing/endorsements for towing either?? š¤Æ
Frogspoison@reddit
Yup. All other states is just the baseline class B (or A for the bigguns)
Scary-Sea-9546@reddit

SVeht@reddit

LabRatsAteMyHomework@reddit
Recently an excavator was being hauled on a flatbed outside of Austin Texas. The driver did not ensure the height was less than the standard overpass height, and he hit a bridge with the excavator. A chunk of concrete fell on a vehicle that was following. The driver was in critical condition for days until finally passing away. He had a young child. Fuck anyone who cuts corners and doesn't take the time to make transportation of dangerous materials safe for other drivers. We need to bring back public punishment for these idiots.
FordonGreeman742@reddit
this picture was taken in Dearborn, Michigan... Need I say more?
Jokes aside, I see suicide coils come out of that steel mill all the time. They shouldn't even allow them to load them like that, but they do whatever the driver requests š¤·
Mindless_Pandemic@reddit (OP)
Cliffs east chicago
FordonGreeman742@reddit
My bad, there's a spot at the rouge that looks just like this shot, with the Ford plant parking lot behind the fence.
I'm at that plant usually multiple times a month, never been to the Chicago location.
Legitimate-Ad-2230@reddit
Arconic in Davenport, formerly known as Alcoa, did this quite a bit with usually 3 or 4 rolls per flatbed

bbymiscellany@reddit
Cliffs is a steel manufacturer unfortunately
Mindless_Pandemic@reddit (OP)
Look up the company on the wrapper and see if they do anything other than steel.
BinxieSly@reddit
This seems fine? The straps look to be at least 3ā, probably 4ā, and with the chain as well that puts the total WLL over 25k for sure which is greater than the WLL requirement from the DOT for a piece of equipment weighing the 45k people say this weighs. They are holding something down not lifting something up; you donāt need to account for the entirety of the weight when strapping to trailers⦠yāall ok?
Mindless_Pandemic@reddit (OP)
The straps over the top are useless. The securement through the middle counts for maybe 30k. The coil racks are only rated for 20k total. The lumber isn't beveled so it is going to compress and loosen everything. If the coil moves the straps will snap against the sharp edges of the coil eye. That one chain and binder would snap just from tipping the trailer too far that can happen when doing a jacknife maneuver.
BinxieSly@reddit
It seems to me youāre just pulling numbers out of your ass so⦠agree to disagree.
Mindless_Pandemic@reddit (OP)
Estimating based on doing flatbed for about 12 years.
BinxieSly@reddit
I definitely donāt believe you did flatbed for even a year if youāre so scared of this load and miss rating coil racks average hold by 10k. You live your best cosplay though.
BlackSC2us@reddit
All the straps are exposed over the rubrail, too. If he gets sideswiped, its over.
Ich_mag_Kartoffeln@reddit
I find it amusing that you guys rave on about the importance of rub rails. Neither Europe nor Australia have them.

PutridContribution41@reddit
Flatbed securement should be an endorsement such as winter driving and mountskn grades. There are too many loopholes for an unqualified CDL holder. Too much greed and profit to be made.
Yakodzun@reddit
In NY there is Metal coils endorsement and I got it, I secure each suicidal coil with 3 chains always
dylanthegrower@reddit
Thatās it?
Mindless_Pandemic@reddit (OP)
The endorsements will just get written off by corrupt lazy DMV people anyways. Like all the illegals that got forged CDL's.
PutridContribution41@reddit
Fix the DMV issue first so the endorsements can be enforced properly.

redditthrowaway663@reddit
Technically speaking because of how the working load limit works that is 50,000 lb of securment. I do not agree with the straps going through the center, but I am more concerned about the dollies being that low
InformalPlane5@reddit
I would of probably lost my shit if I was there

Not enough coil racks, not enough securement. Like I wouldn't use straps for coils anyway, but if you're gonna commit to it, get more straps. Like 10-12. And some edge protectors.
oldandforgot@reddit
Im a farm fleet driver. I haul a lot of farm equipment. You guys are talking about racks, but i dont see any rack. My Dad used to give me shit about usingva chainbon ecery wheel on the tractor. I was on an old dirt road on the side of a hill inside a curve with a 45 ft trailer and a 2 tr old tractor that belonged to a neighbor. Trailer broke through the culvert and slid almost at a 90 degree angle to the ground. Tractor stated on the trailer. Dad never said a thing about my chains again...
every_body_killa@reddit
Why is the landing gear 2ā from the ground ?? Thatās always a favorite one I see around VA these drivers hate cranking the handle all the way up, sparks flying every time they go over rough corners and roads.
musicalmadness1@reddit
I see that too everywhere and lmao when they arrive at a shipper right behind me and the feet are bent all up. I lift mine all the way.
Snappypants9@reddit
Does anyone know why they don't just lay these down flat - I am guessing there is a good reason - but don't know what it is.
Mindless_Pandemic@reddit (OP)
Eye to side benefits: Easier loading/unloading. Same orientation as processing machines. Safer if banding breaks. Cheaper transport, don't need pallets or expensive specialized gripping mechanisms. Safer securement as all chains can go through the eye instead of having pressure and friction alone.
Eye vertical is more for smaller lighter coils with a narrower sheet width or painted coils where eye to side would damage coatings.
musicalmadness1@reddit
Also the constant bouncing on roads would damager whatever side is facing down.
Abaogy@reddit
I use to transport 2-3 of these coils on a flatbed for a roofing company for 2 years. I discovered all the crazy coil videos on reddit later in life feel lucky nothing happened to me

This is where shippers need to step in and stop this kind of behavior. Yeah the driver should learn how to do it properly but to see that roll out of your business is pure negligence. Safety starts with you but it's also a team effort.
mothertruckr106@reddit
At least there is A chain....I guess.
Commiefornian@reddit
Is anything there actually a violation? Those are presumably 5k straps, attached to each side, so theyāre legal for 10k each. Plus the chain, that should be over the weight of the coil. Thereās a prohibition on crossed straps through the eye, but not over the top. I donāt see anything in the regs about coil rack ratings, or wood type.
