In this episode, Wesley Crusher annoys the crew yet again, antagonizing those who love playing their video games. Wesley plots the downfall of the crew as NO ONE can be allowed to have fun, even going so far as to dox the crew getting off in private. Can anyone stop this supervillain?! Will Wesley Crusher, evil genius of the 24th century, ever be denied?! Will Worf ever smile again?!
I have a question about a newer version of this episode. Every time I’ve watched it, it has always bothered me how at the end when they are holding Wesley’s eyes open, he is still able to blink his eyes. I was watching it on Pluto TV the other day and his eye blink is gone. I was watching it live, so I couldn’t rewind to check. Did they actually go in and fix it so he doesn’t blink his eyes, or did my my internet just buffer for the split second when he used to blink his eyes?
Exactly what I was thinking. Cheap dopamine hits. Brainwashing everyone into tech dependency. Makes me want to throw my phone against the wall (but I don’t have AppleCare)
Whoever did her hair for that episode really did her dirty though. Probably it noticeable in SD but in 4k you can see how wonky her hairline is. It was downright distracting
This episode made me sure that some of the writers knew works by Larry Niven. This episode always reminds me of his Known Space books.
In Niven’s universe, people become wireheads — addicts who use a brain implant called a droud to directly stimulate the pleasure center. No drugs, no dealers, just plug into a wall socket and get endless bliss.
It’s basically the same idea as The Game — total pleasure, zero resistance, and the scary loss of control that comes with it.
Always thought it was interesting how Star Trek explored this idea and I can't help but wonder if they were conflating those two themes. Does anyone in here know of Larry Niven?
Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers had a similar episode about a cola with a literal cult following and a catchy ad jingle, and they were basically making fun of commercial TV and their own sponsors.
I wish someone would make a real version of this (without the addictive nature obviously). It's simple but looks like it would be fun. Games don't always have to have a ton of stuff going on. Look at Pong, Asteroids. Tetris, etc. Not a lot going on but a lot of fun. Same with this one. What name could you give it, though?

I wish they never showed the game. Really aged that episode. Also lets the viewer imagine what the game is like.

Yeah, it was weird. I was just at the age that stuff like that was starting to make sense to me when it aired. I remember being a bit confused by it.

When everyone gives you that “I’m tired of your shit Wesley” look, even when brainwashed.
“You wouldn’t steal a video game, would you?” 1990s/2000s commercial.

Some searching shows me that versions of this game have been made for Google Glass and Hololens.
Does anybody know if any version exists for more current VR/AR headsets?
