Oji was actually played by Pamela Adlon from the autobiographical show “Better Things”. The show is centered around her life in LA as a career “working actress” and they even have a scene where she’s in sci-fi tv makeup very like Oji. Good show.
Yes, he was my Star Trek hero, and my favorite captain. Then I went and watched (only the first 3 episodes) 'Picard' .....and well let's just say that hopefully the therapy (possible PTSD) works and I get over it soon.....
You should watch the remainder of Picard. The second half of Season 2 is hard to get through but imo season one has a couple of outstanding moments later on, and season 3 is magical.
I truly wanted to enjoy it, as a Trekkie I was totally excited when the show was announced. But I just can't stand it, it's like watching a different character and the 'feel' of the show was somehow wrong! Plus, as I think I have mentioned in other posts, I just can't get past that bloody woman calling him JL. NOBODY EVER CALLED HIM THAT AAARRRGGHH!!! Excuse my shouting (takes a few deep breaths)
I felt that Star Trek Picard elevated the character. In his book, Stewart discussed what he thought the character was doing now, giving a thoughtful back story about what Picard has been up to, explaining the character's motivations. His life is different now, and now there are different people around him. I liked that approach much better than if they just plopped him back in the Captain's chair on the Enterprise E or F or whatever. It gives the character more depth.
The Season 3 fan service bringing all the other characters back was also approached thoughtfully, each character has had other things happening in their lives too. And they were introduced gradually, intentionally making it feel more natural.
Season 3 was the same producers as season 2, made back to back.
Some of the worst parts of 2 existed only to set up Picard's feelings in 3, and they knew the whole time they were going to ignore the main plot from 2 even though it was relevant for 3.
There were some really cool ideas in 2, and it started strong and even the early-middle was pretty strong. Then it got dull and meandered quite a bit, and apparently from what I heard, Covid changed the plan which made certain shooting locations more mandatory. which meant spending more time in a particular location than was originally planned.
Either way, 3 is magnificent in so many ways and not only fixes decades-long problems I had with how things were left, but actually grew upon them in ways I could never imagine. S3 is fantastic. Like the 5th movie we never got.
Enormous missed opportunity on Disco when the combined Vulcanite people committee made an appearance and there were no Mintakans present.
Would have been so much fun to see the Romulans contemplate joining the Federation in their emotional, distrustful way. Then the Vulcans logically coming to a conclusion. And lastly the Mintakans noting calmly that first they must consult the Picard through prayer before taking any decisions of note.

Season 3, from what I understand, had a different show runner. He made the decision to bring that season closer to what made TNG what it was.

LOL remember to breathe. That never bothered me, I thought it was actually cool and different.
Can you imagine if all the crew called each other by their initials?
Worldly-Ad-9303@reddit
Yeah, Worf calling him JL, I can't really imagine that for some reason. There would have been a lot of time spent in the captains ready room.
