What cloning software is good nowadays

I'm currently planning to clone my SSD to a new NVME since my current SSD is failing (as per HDS). So I was wondering what cloning software would be useful. There are a lot of bs vids that at the end they let you pay for cloning. As for the reason I'm cloning rather than a fresh install, my partner works on my pc so authentication on google chrome is pretty much very time consuming on her end. I just wanted to save the extra load of work for her by cloning.

Just cloned my SSD and it was successful. Thanks again! used clonezilla and it worked like a charm

I really liked Macrium but it failed me recently. Been using Rescuezilla and it's super easy to use and very reliable so far.

GParted, using bootable usb.

This has always worked for me.

I still use Macrium just because I'm used to it. I have a handful of emails so it's not a big deal signing up for the 30 day free trial.

i second macrium reflect. at least for 8.0, you can keep using the same download link and activation code indefinitely. The ones they email to you
9okm@reddit
Oh hah. That’s good to know. I only ever have to use it once or twice a year.

The last version they released where they still did free licenses for home use is available to download pretty easily, and it doesn't require any registration or activation.

same i use the free version to back up my pc weekly on a monday morning so its great for this as well.
iApolloDusk@reddit
Yep. Scheduled tasks are sick. You get a lot of functionality out of the free program. For non-enterprise Windows users, it's probably the best out there.

I have used Clonezilla multiple times for cloning both SSDs and HDDs and it has never failed to work properly. It does have a bit of a learning curve to it but just doing a basic disk to disk clone is fairly simple, there are plenty of written and video tutorials that will show you the whole process. And clonezilla is totally free, all you need is a usb flash drive to run it from.
KlausKoe@reddit
I used clonezilla recently without issues.
I remember I had some trouble years ago but that was mostly due to the fact I tried to clone a HDD to a smaller SSD. I fiddled a lot with the parameters. In retrospective the default values would probbaly have worked.
FlippantObserver@reddit
Rescuezilla (it is clonezilla with a gui for additional hand holding) and is also free.
Majortom_67@reddit
Rescuezilla but you'll have a completely identical disk and you absolutely need to shutdown the pc after clonimg and remove the old disk prior to reboot or you'll face issues because they both have the same uuid, guuid ecc ecc
owlwise13@reddit
It depends, if you buy a WD or a Samsung they offer free cloning software. Clonzilla or Rescucilla are reliable.
C-n0te@reddit
I've used both successfully in the recent past. I feel like they were pretty user friendly too.
stealth941@reddit
Clonezilla, Rescuezilla both are the same thing but one has a GUI i can't remember which one... the GUI one is better for the "average" user, short learning curve a couple of youtube videos can't fix

dd is and always will be king

I still use older versions of Minitool partition wizard before they went paid.

Nah, they've got different eyes, pants, and held items.

In the same vein, I use GRML.

I had issues on a recent OS clone from ssd to nvme. I was using Easeus partition master or whatever and I couldn't boot from the successful clone, so I got Macrium Reflect from major geeks and imaged all the partitions and then installed windows 11 pro and then restored the windows partition image over the freshly installed one, then I had to expand the partitions to fill the empty space.

Rsync ?

Clonezilla
turtlelover05@reddit
Rescuezilla which is Clonezilla with a UI that isn't awfully confusing. It's FOSS unlike Macrium Reflect so you don't need to use workarounds to continue using it for free.
t90fan@reddit
I've used Clonezilla in the past
You can also often get a free trial copy of Macrium Reflect or Acronis or something from your disk manufacturer when you register it for the warranty
Ice_Hill_Penguin@reddit
Just copy it - "cp" or "dd".
CarbonPhoenix96@reddit
Disk genius has never failed me. Macrium has been less reliable for me
Used-Edge-2342@reddit
Robocopy
Overall-Tailor8949@reddit
Clonezilla if you want a generic, use on anything tool. Otherwise check with the manufacturer of your NVME drive, many of them offer a migration tool to clone your old drive(s).
