It's not really abandoned, US is employing \~150 locals to maintain it. Venezuela also claims that the opposition leader is hiding in there. I do agree that the claim is strange and I wouldn't completely believe what any of the two sides say.

This might be clickbait. I have Venezuelan in-laws, there is not an active US embassy or ambassador in Venezuela. They have a building that is still being maintained and has local staff I believe. But any attack there would be against a building and local security and maintenance staff.

Consular and passport services were redirected to Colombia and Mexico a few years ago.
