Sure doesn't seem it was "eliminated" then
nilsinleneed@reddit
the anti-vaxx crowd wanna bring back back measles and polio
this way you can ensure that half your kids die, so women have to stay in the house and have 6 kids on average for re-population
the conservative wet dream, dead kids and women without agency
Kind_Judgment6872@reddit
R u ok?
SoylentGrunt@reddit
R u vaxxed?
Kind_Judgment6872@reddit
Yes. Do you really think that people are actively working and spending their time to ensure half of the child population dies? Seems a little out there. That’s all
ValiantBear@reddit
It was "locally" eliminated. Western medicine has caused a slew of diseases to become eradicated in their areas, while the disease itself is still prevalent in other less developed areas.
Extreme-King@reddit
Yeah. I know. I also kn9w the definition of eradicated and the 1 year limit to remain eradicated

This has been a fun time to read Parable of the Sower for the first time. Octavia Butler knew exactly what was coming. I’m thankful for her sake that she wasn’t alive to see her predictions become reality.
mehoymimoyy@reddit
That’s a depressing cherry on top.. I actually couldn’t bring myself to finish it. It was so bleak and dystopian.

It's our current reality, unfortunately We're currently living in the sequal, Parable of the Talents

I have it sitting on my nightstand but I think I might have to leave it if it’s going to make me more depressed than real life

I fucked up and read Canticle for Liebovitz during the bowels of 2020. Riots happening, COVID spreading like the wind, furloughed from work...it really fucked me up. I still can't watch a dystopian movie with getting super stressed out.

Can someone put in perspective how 'bas' 1,500 is. Not trying to downplay it but it seems so inconsequential.
Dpek1234@reddit
From 0 to 1500 is a increase of infinite amount
And for now its mostly local small pockets, someone ill has to come from one pocket to another for transmission
The problem is that this administration has been trying their best to reduce vaccination
Thus increaseing the size of the local pockets, untill they are no longer local, then you have a country wide pandemic

Vs
What ever the fuck facebook and fo legaly not news are putting out
Sellavator@reddit
Are you intentionally being dense? “They” being media.
Why shouldn’t you be worried about communicable diseases? Well a basic fact of biology is that as diseases work their way through human populations, they become less lethal in an evolutionary exchange for more infectiousness.
If you just look at the mortality rate in numbers you’ll realize how fucking silly it is. Of those who have the following disease, here are the chances of dying:
Covid 0.3% Hepatitis 0.3-0.5% Measles <0.1% Mumps <0.01% Rubella <0.01% Whooping cough 0.1% West Nile <0.1%
Again that’s after you’ve gotten it. Whooping cough is 1:20k chances of getting it in the first place in any given year. So if you combine the chance of getting it with the then mortality rate your chance of dying of it any given year is right on par with the odds of being killed by a meteorite or falling plane debris.
LassenDiscard@reddit
And hundreds of thousands of health-care professionals.
... you think tens of thousands of people in this country a year are dying by meteorite or plane debris? Also, why are you only listing such a small number of communicable diseases? Oh, right, because you're lying by omission.
Seriously, do you actually READ the words you write?

Mexico's MMR vaccination rate is 5% higher than the United States. rate.
Ok-Equipment-8418@reddit
Significant numbers of undocumented have been found to be from India, Asia, Middle Eastern, and other regions.
mr_stealth@reddit
Mexico is still the most common origin country. And many of the other options have similar, or higher, vaccination rates to the US. India is only 2% lower. The US is actually in the bottom half of the list. If you want to find a group to point your finger at, maybe try the Mennonite and Amish communities. That's where the current outbreak is actually concentrated. Both groups have historically low vaccination rates, and generally less use of modern medical care.
LangHai@reddit
And Mormons as well.
Ok-Equipment-8418@reddit
But specifically regarding Measles i.e. the article posted here, Mexicos vaccination rate in 2023 was 76% compared to 93% in the US.
mr_stealth@reddit
That would be the rate for children who have received two doses of the MMR vaccine on schedule, not the population as a whole. Now, that is a concerning downward trend and it will lead to an overall lower rate over time. But it seems unlikely to be related to the current outbreaks...which are happening largely within specific under-vaccinated religious communities. I would also guess that immigrant children in the US are more likely to be vaccinated, as the MMR vaccine is required to attend public schools just about everywhere here.
shutchomouf@reddit
guess it wasn’t eliminated 25 years ago
LangHai@reddit
It was eliminated in the U.S. Then a bunch of antivaxers didn't vaccinate their children, their children travel/proselytize in other countries overseas that still have measels, catch it and bring it back where they infect the rest of their antivax communities.

Greentea503@reddit
If everyone was vaccinated here it wouldn't matter. There's something called herd immunity. Look it up.
ChocolateBananaCats@reddit
I looked it up.
Herd immunity is when enough people in a population are protected from a disease—either because they’ve been vaccinated or because they’ve already had the illness—that the disease can’t spread easily from person to person.
Here’s how it works step by step:
Diseases spread through contact Many contagious diseases (like measles or flu) move from person to person. If no one is protected, one sick person can infect many others.
Immunity acts as a barrier When a person is immune, the disease can’t take hold in them, so they can’t pass it along to others. Immunity comes from either:
Vaccination (safer way)
Recovering from the disease (natural infection, but riskier)
More immune people = less opportunity to spread If enough people are immune, the chain of transmission breaks. A sick person might come into contact only with people who are already immune, so the disease fizzles out.
Community protection This protects people who can’t be vaccinated or who have weaker immune systems (babies, older adults, or those with health issues). They’re less likely to encounter the disease because it simply isn’t spreading widely.
Threshold matters Each disease has a different threshold for herd immunity, depending on how contagious it is. For example:
Measles is extremely contagious, so about 90–95% of people need to be immune.
Polio needs around 80–85%.
Less contagious illnesses need a lower percentage.
In short: herd immunity isn’t about everyone being immune—it’s about having a high enough proportion immune that the disease struggles to survive in the community.
Greentea503@reddit
Correct. And if more people are vaccinated, the disease will struggle to survive in the community. Which is what we had for many years here in the US.
EightBitTrash@reddit
In most cases I would disagree with you, and I think I still am, but I'm also pointing out that it's mostly centered around Gaines County, Texas, around the Mennonite communities there, which has historically low vaccination rates due to skepticism toward modern medicine and limited engagement with healthcare systems.
(Gaines County alone accounts for over 400 cases!) Gaines county and surrounding counties are also overwhelmingly republican and conservative, so my guess is that the rate of unvaccinated people spreading measles there is pretty bad even out of the Mennonite communities and more than likely in Trump country considering what they're like.
I'm also going to point out that the current USA makes it extremely hard to enter the country legally and stay there, since ICE has been going to the places that migrants go to get 'vetted' and snatching people right after or before their court hearings.
Also. Where are you getting 20 million illegal aliens from? The foreign-born population has only grown by 5.1 million between March 2022 and March 2024. Unless you're accounting for more years than I am, you're just exaggerating.
16yearswasted@reddit
Numbers are MAGA's strong suit. Remember, Cheeto Mussolini himself claimed drugs killed 300 billion people in the US last year.
NoTerm3078@reddit

16yearswasted@reddit
See this post from the CDC. It's one paragraph, please just read it.
Okay I'll spoil it: most US measles importations occur in unvaccinated US residents infected while abroad, with rapid spread in undervaccinated communities.
The illegal aliens are keeping our food costs low by doing back breaking, dirty work that no one else wants to do, and they're often getting paid under the table. That's why food WAS so cheap here. That's why restaurant meals used to be affordable. Those illegal aliens serve a very important role in our economy and, without them, well, you see when you go grocery shopping what's going on.

Antivaxx was best associated with hippies pre-COVID. However, the pushing from authority figures on the right is way stronger than the left ever had, and it's not even close. As a result, Republicans managed to quickly adopt a group that the left wanted to distance itself from, and grow from there dramatically. When the right says that hippies are antivaxx, they are doing the same mistake as pretending they currently stand for the same rights as Lincoln. They are taking a point of view from when they were a respectable party and applying it to Trump, because Trump can't stand on his own merits.

>Partly, he said, that’s because they don’t engage as regularly with health care systems as more assimilated groups do. Many traditional Anabaptist groups did accept vaccinations that were promoted in the mid-20th century, such as for tetanus and smallpox, but they have been more skeptical in recent years of newly introduced vaccines, Nolt said.
>But Old Colony groups who arrived in the late 20th century also “missed the whole mid-century immunization push, as they weren’t in the U.S. at that time.”

COVID is rippin' around too.
Nursing homes in Illinois are requiring masks again. I've got neighbors, family, and co-workers all down hard with it right now. "Mild COVID" according to my coworker is a week off work, or in the case of one of our extended family members, 5 days in the hospital.

The measles we have figured out. But how do you fix stupid?
Kindly-Scar-3224@reddit
Only in America! Land of the free from vaccines and common sense
ky420@reddit
All I know is all the old TV shows from Brady bunch to Flintstones talked about measles like it was a big joke. Today they act like it's superaids.

I have no way to move out of my antivax state I’m scared
Appropriate_Ad_1429@reddit
At least if you're vaccinated you'll be ok.
loveshercoffee@reddit
Probably, but not necessarily.
Vaccines are only effective like 94-97%, which means between 3 and 6 out of every 100 vaccinated folks are going to get sick anyway. The higher the concentration of the disease in the population, the more of those people there will be .... and they cycle continues
The greater the percentage of people that are vaccinated, the harder it is for the disease to get hold and spread. This is how herd immunity works.
gotireds@reddit
It's genuinely terrifying to see this many cases. The misinformation and political tribalism surrounding vaccines are directly putting vulnerable people in danger. We had this beat, and now we're going backwards because of pure ignorance. It's a public health failure on every level.

It's funny how the entire antivaxx movement got started by an asshole doctor who wanted to sell his own version of the measles vaccine in the 90s.
ConspiracyPhD@reddit
Antivax movement has been around a lot longer than Wakefield. And the separate measles vaccine was an afterthought. His goal was to sell a test kit for a made up disease, "autistic enterocolitis."
