Hi, hydrometrist here.
The country is still technically in drought and is expected to be through autumn. We need a lot more rain than we have currently had.
Groundwater hasn’t started to consistently recharge yet either.
Just a heads up, droughts are usually a two year cycle and this year was potentially year one.
Lorfarius@reddit
doesn't look like it this year.
woods_edge@reddit
Depends where you are. The south is extremely dry at the moment, still too early to tell but plans for drought are currently being drawn up just in case.

It’s almost as if we need to build some more reservoirs or something, I hope those water companies have been banking their profits so they can afford to build some!

As a Thames Water customer I kindly request you shush, it's making me sad
Fit-Drop-9427@reddit (OP)
I like your optimism
Herne_KZN@reddit
Absolutely not. We need months of above average rain to make up for months of below.
According_Repeat6223@reddit
Wrong type of rain.
Fit-Drop-9427@reddit (OP)
fine rain that soaks you through

No, and government should have committed to making to reservoirs years ago but are too worried about issuing contracts for pointless things to their mates.
PerceptionGreat2439@reddit
Doubt it.
They had one job to collect the free water that falls from the sky and they fucked it up.

United utilities reservoir levels are available at https://www.unitedutilities.com/help-and-support/your-water-supply/your-reservoirs/reservoir-levels/. You would expect those to be ok given where they are.
Yorkshire is a very different story: https://www.yorkshirewater.com/about-us/what-we-do/open-data/watsit-report/
Severn Trent is kinda between them: https://www.stwater.co.uk/about-us/reservoir-levels/
Anglian water is ok despite being the driest region in the country: https://www.anglianwater.co.uk/services/water-supply/monitoring-water-resources/

That's really interesting didn't think this information would be publicly available

There's a pond near me that has fish, terrapins, coots, kingfishers and herons visit it.
It's about two or three feet lower than it's winter levels.
I keep expecting it to be magically full after the downpours but it's hardly any different.
Few_Reward_7593@reddit
You should see the HPB restrictions drop in the next month or so.
There was a massive increase a couple weeks back which brought us back to healthy levels. Still under for what we expect at this time of year.
Problem is that a lot of the ground was super dry and it went deep, most of the reservoirs get filled by ground water. Very little that falls from the sky directly into the reservoir actually fills much.
A lot more dirt, silt and other contaminates will be dragged through due to low beds and dry ground. Plants dig deeper for water and open more areas to absorb. It's a super complex process and the ban is still in place to let the river beds and ground soak up excess and get back to 'normal' states.
We don't know what winter brings, just because its not warm doesn't mean the ground doesn't dry.

Depends where you are in the country, North and West yes. Further South and East probably not.
DomBrown2406@reddit
Not even close. Still at 30% here.
