Macedonian tourists in China forced to put down their flag when it was mistaken for Imperial Japan Rising Sun flag. Thoughts on this?

Why the fuck you raise your flag in another country? What kind of a respectless piece of shit you have to be?
CataphractBunny@reddit
Corporate needs you to find the difference between these flags:
Cop: "They're the same flag."
Maximum_Link_895@reddit
And they say that only Americans dont know geography
Smorcomics@reddit
Why would you expect them to know how North Macedonian flag looks like, and why does anyone just bring huge flag in other countries and pose with it at tourist attractions
Stock_Emergency_1507@reddit
People do that, especially if a few of them come from the same country. Never did that, personally, but it's common.
SpicyScribes@reddit
Yeah, it's a common tourist thing. Most people bring a small flag.
uQyqe@reddit
It’s like with everything: short people are really self-conscious about their height, identity-less people are self-aware about their identity. FYROM gotta FYROM.
Scary-Temperature91@reddit
As someone who finds the whole North Macedonian identity crisis extremely funny, that is not a NM thing. People from all over the world do this.
idkidkidksiwjwj@reddit
get a job.
Scary-Temperature91@reddit
You are a Slav, be proud of it. There is nothing wrong with it.
dragonbab@reddit
Says the butthurt guy that has to bring that into any and all conversation about Macedonia. Go outside and touch grass you grease goblin.
CataphractBunny@reddit
It's the other way around, actually. I'd expect them to know what the Imperial Japanese flag looks like.
Smorcomics@reddit
They sure do. Yesterday was national day, so even more touchy (if this was yesterday, if not its close to that day). And flags are similar enough, its like how people confuse swastika with ancient hindu symbols
CataphractBunny@reddit
They obviously don't.
If you're blind, sure.
That's because the swastika is an ancient Hindu, among many others, symbol.
guIIy@reddit
I doubt your average Chinese person knows North Macedonia even exists. Not surprising to think the Macedonian flag is a version of the imperial Japanese one.
If someone walked around berlin with a Nazi flag but the colours were green and black they’d still think you were being a Nazi.
CataphractBunny@reddit
For the third time, the average Chinese knows the Japanese Imperial Flag. That alone makes them capable of differentiating between the one that is and the one that is not.
As for your second "argument": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law Enjoy reading.
guIIy@reddit
You clearly didn't read what I said then. A german will recognise the Nazi flag, that doesn't mean if they see a black and green one they'll think "oh but that's the wrong colours so it's not a Nazi flag".
CataphractBunny@reddit
We're not talking about Germans. The Great Wall of China is, surprise, in China.
guIIy@reddit
It was a comparison so you could understand it better, but you’re clearly retarded.
Smorcomics@reddit
Dude, it looks like imperial japan flag with chinese colors ITS SIMILAR, not because it is but because it resembles it. Lets say you make a t shirt with that hindu symbol and walk through Berlin, do you think you would go uninterupted. Its not what it is, its how its percieved
CataphractBunny@reddit
Dude, you are trying to equate something that's similar to something with a thing that's literally the same thing. And no, the flags are not similar enough to be mistaken for one or the other. Unless you're like this:
guIIy@reddit
The hindu swastika is actually mirrored to the Nazi one… so no, not the same thing.
CataphractBunny@reddit
The Nazi swastika is actually a copy of the Hindu one. So, exactly the same thing. Just like all the other swastikas that were fashionable in Europe and USA in the twenties and thirties. This are basics, bro.
Smorcomics@reddit
im not equating anything, its just a right decision to take their flag, and a bit of reasoning why
CataphractBunny@reddit
You are. Stop lying.
Wrong decision. Incorrect reasoning.
Smorcomics@reddit
But we dont fully know why they did it, we dont have full information, we just guess because of the title. You assume its because they dont know how imperial flag looks like and they mistook Macedonian for it. I say its not because they think its imperial Japanese flag, it could be for many other reasons, and if it is because of that, they can simply take it if they DONT KNOW WHAT IT MEANS not because they KNOW its imperial flag. And flag is just close enough for them to do it on the basis that it is imperial Japanese (both symbolize sun, diferent colors)
CataphractBunny@reddit
Best of luck with moving those goalposts. o/
Smorcomics@reddit
No, im expanding on previous comments, you just stand on that they dont know what imperial japanese flag looks like, which is shocking
CataphractBunny@reddit
No, you're trying to move the goalposts. Now you have thrown in a straw man as well.
Smorcomics@reddit
its not a debate, you engaged with a video interpreting literally what title said and then you made a meme about it. i just exercised other possibilites, not fully knowing what could be the truth
CataphractBunny@reddit
Doesn't need to be a debate for me to not fall for logical fallacies.
Smorcomics@reddit
point them out
CataphractBunny@reddit
I already did.
Smorcomics@reddit
not what they are called but how they fit in my broad speculation and thinking out loud comments, you also made few fallacies even without saying much
CataphractBunny@reddit
I said what I had to say at the beginning. My stance has not changed despite all your attempts at gaslighting, moving the goalposts, and strawman arguments.
No idea what triggered you so hard to warrant this kind of cope.
Smorcomics@reddit
HAHAHHA sure buddy, you have no arguments you just came here to post unfunny memes
CataphractBunny@reddit
[irl facepalm]
Only_Tennis5994@reddit
You are talking as if the imperial Japanese flag is one single flag. It had a few variations. It's understandable one doesn't know all of them.
CataphractBunny@reddit
I am not, but it's obvious why you would me to.
If you are aware of any variation of the flag using a red background with eight golden rays, please update the Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rising_Sun_Flag
Only_Tennis5994@reddit
I'm just saying it could be a variant. Not that it is. And you don't expect every Chinese to know all variants.
CataphractBunny@reddit
That's not what you are saying.
And as I said before, I'd expect them to know the Rising Sun flag.
uno_cardd@reddit
Why are you being so antagonistic when it's obvious that people are trying to explain to you that it obviously looks similar enough to possibly be a rendition of the imperial Japan flag in the eyes of this guard? You don't have to agree with the removal to recognize the mere concept of how a random Chinese guard might come to this conclusion. People take flags of all kinds of countries and past empires and tweak it for all kinds of ideologies, why is it so out of this world to acknowledge some random person in China who probably doesn't even know any of the Balkan flags to make that connection before knowing what the flag of Macedonia is?
CataphractBunny@reddit
Because that's not an explanation but gaslighting. The flags don't look similar at all. No sane person can confuse them.
uno_cardd@reddit
Lmao, you're just ragebaiting atp. People are trying to explain to you that while the flags are not a 1:1 that they do look similarly enough that it's understandable that a random Chinese guard would think it's a rendition of the imperial flag before he would know it's a flag of a country with 2 million citizens half the world over
Key words:
CataphractBunny@reddit
Thing is, the flags don't look similar enough.
uno_cardd@reddit
Wrong

Well, north Macedonian cops know the Chinese flag.
guIIy@reddit
I reckon theres so many people in Europe who have no idea what Macedonia is. In China there’s going to be millions and millions.
Pyro-Bird@reddit
It's Macedonian cops.
_-Event-Horizon-_@reddit
I can get not knowing what the Macedonian flag is, but supposedly Japan is one of their historical enemies, so they ought to know what the Japanese flag looks like.
guIIy@reddit
Yeah but they probably think its a stylised version. Walk through Berlin with a green and blue nazi flag and they’ll still think it’s a nazi flag.
CataphractBunny@reddit
You don't understand, the flags "are similar enough". 😂

Kindly_Owl5@reddit
That's not Macedonia buddy, check your facts.

sta6gwraia@reddit
That's a shameful comment.
-who_am-i_@reddit
Why?
sta6gwraia@reddit
It's insulting for a country.
tegriddysmesh@reddit
that CoUnTrY is insulting itself by not following what is signed in the Prespa accords. stop talking out of your rectum.
georgakop_athanas@reddit
The Prespa Agreement also agreed to this flag and not calling them "skopian".
sta6gwraia@reddit
This is something important and the Greek government is also to blame for it. Both current governments are guilty.
-who_am-i_@reddit
What has Greece done wrong?
sta6gwraia@reddit
Mitsotakis doesn't require VRO to follow the agreement. Doesn't ask for the school books to stop the propaganda and doesn't support the erga omnes rule.
-who_am-i_@reddit
I agree
tegriddysmesh@reddit
the greeks respect it. the skopjians say they are macedonian instead of NORTH macedonian. this country is a farce and if karma exists the bulgarians and the albanians will divide and annex this joke of a CoUnTrY. stop talking things you know very little about. the only thing the greek goverment is to blame is that they caved to the germans and americans and accepted this farce and joke of a country to exist and to be named something with macedonia in it. they are buulgarians and albanians and they should be annexed. rant over.
curseuponyou@reddit

Nationalists in North Macedonia are lost over this incident, they considered China their friend which will bury the West and the libs.
gilmour1948@reddit
No way! Can I have a link?
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
I'm very disappointed because of the comments made by my compatriots here, insulting a neighboring country and its people. Insisting that Macedonians are "North Macedonians", even though even the Prespa Agreement forced on Macedonia by Greece with the help of the EU and NATO specifies that Macedonians are still called Macedonians. Or worse, calling the country Skopia and the people Skopians.
Никогаш северна, само Македонија!
georgakop_athanas@reddit
Even though I am a leftist and I want Slavic Macedonian customs to not be suppressed in Greece, that part of the Prespa Agreement was actually way too serviant to North Macedonia's nationalism. They should have settled for "Slavic Macedonians".
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
How so? Which nationalism? (I'm not saying it doesn't exist, it just isn't the wish to continue calling yourself what you had been called for over 100 years.)
Of course I am!
georgakop_athanas@reddit
Good to know that you are no "Greek merely Critical on History" as you try to hide, but just either a pro-VMRO–NP nationalist or a Greek useful idiot for them.
Yabu1@reddit
You aren't a leftist. If you are, you'd care about the self-determination of all peoples more than your nationalistic garbage you are spouting.
georgakop_athanas@reddit
The Macedonians already have self-determination, in their own country, North Macedonia. I am a leftist and the matter was settled for good by a leftist government with the Prespa Agreement. The ones trying to claim a part of Greece even after the agreement, are the nationalists.
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
I'm both Greek and critical of our history (and politics and other stuff that would be too long to put in a username).
Since I consider that Greece had no right to force this agreement or a similar one on Macedonia, of course I'll disregard it.
georgakop_athanas@reddit
Your very first comment used the Prespa Agreement in your favor, yet now you reject it as something that Greece "forced" on North Macedonia?
You just make no logical sense.
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
I simply stated that even the Prespa Agreement, which I consider unfair towards Macedonia and Macedonians, specifies that Macedonians continue to be called Macedonians.
PrimaryLow7025@reddit
Macedonoians are more slavic than anyone in the Balkans. They shouldnt have any flag that resembles anvient Macedonia.

Honest mistake. The trauma still lives

Trauma is still on Chinese TV very regularly.

China is not a saint as a country, but it is by far the least bad super power especially when it comes to military actions beyond its territory
StillLoadingProblems@reddit
lol! That must be why they build all these islands around all their neighbours….?? It’s gonna be shit just like the rest of them like USA and russia etc
Fair-Fondant-6995@reddit
That's literally nothing. Asserting control over the disputed spartly islands and expanding them is not that crazy for a superpower. Like that is so blown out of proportion. Qatar, uae, and other countries who don't have one tenth of the weight of china do 100% worse stuff.
StillLoadingProblems@reddit
Lol what? They BUILD new island to claim territorial waters from their neighbours and “patrol” their “new Chinese waters” with war ships that more than once have rammed other countries boats!
China is silent now and not very aggressive in open wars (except stick war with India, and total annexation of Tibet!) But they are not peaceful because they are better. They are biding their time and russias fiasco in Ukraine is probably what will make them wait even longer now :)
No super power is good right now! russia, USA and China have all obligations to them selves that will fuck everyone else if needed
And don’t get me started on the emirates, Qatar, UEA etc! Saying China isn’t “good” doesn’t absolve anyone else for anything
Disastrous_Dot_7638@reddit
So far
Administrative_Bid51@reddit
I have no idea what's the point of your reply. Can you please tell me what's your point?
Disastrous_Dot_7638@reddit
You said “trauma still lives”
This doesn’t give enough context to a what degree this trauma lives today. A police officer taking the flag doesn’t necessarily mean that the ordinary people has any strong emotions about what happened. For example Europeans slaughtered each other to extremes yet they have superb relationships today and they hate other the nations, some of whom actually saved their lives from other European nations.
So it’s crucial what is the current state of the past trauma relevant today. And in China, this trauma being kept alive very strongly to this day is my point.
Administrative_Bid51@reddit
I understand what you're saying now. But let me tell you this, even if the genocide of the Chinese people wouldn't be used by the state media as a tool for their political purposes, the trauma would still be very much alive, passed down through stories and lived experiences. Being subjected to a genocide is not some fleeting feeling, it becomes ingrained in the national/group identity. Think about the genocide against native Americans, that trauma is there in perpetuity. The children of African people used as slaves by american and european colonial nations still bear the scars of those atrocities, it is reflected in broader societal groups in all sorts of ways. The trauma of being subjected to a genocide is very much alive, with or without any media intervention.
Disastrous_Dot_7638@reddit
I agree, I also never meant that it is state propaganda or Chinese TV is wrong to show documentaries about it every day.
So don’t understand the downvotes, perhaps some Chinese trolls experiencing an understanding issue, otherwise I don’t know why anyone would downvote my factual statement.

It's true, and not only the country's flag. For example, on every hiking trip organized by my university, at the top everyone takes a picture with the Croatian flag and/or the university flag.
I’ve never thought about it as being strange, and I don’t see it as a form of nationalism but rather as "We made it to the top, we have to document it".

vaskopopa@reddit
I’m detecting small-dick-vibes here.
Everyone (outside of the cloisters of EU) refers to them as Macedonians. It’s a bit like Mexico insisting on the area north of San Diego to be called North California, just because they too occupy some part of it.
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
Actually, the people should be called just Macedonians (only the country name has been designated a geographic identifier) even per the Prespa Agreement, which we unfairly forced on Macedonia with the help of EU and NATO.
vaskopopa@reddit
That sounds fair/reasonable
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
What is fair/reasonable? Forcing the country to change its name because we don't like it?
vaskopopa@reddit
What you said is reasonable. They should be called Macedonians by the rest of us. Macedonia as a territory is larger than their country, so I understand that reserving the name for the northern part only may not be accurate. The analogy is the territory of California which spans from La Paz to Sacramento, while the state of California starts at San Diego.
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
It may not be accurate, but:

Macedonia is a region of Greece for thousands of years, since before Alexander the Great. This is from what’s now called North Macedonia, formerly Yukoslavia.

Before it was a region of Greece in modern times, it CONQUERED Greece in ancient times.

schkembe_voivoda@reddit
They never spoke Slavic for sure.
dimitriye98@reddit
We all share heritage to the Romans (or Byzantines, if you want to fall for Italian propaganda), a far greater and longer lasting empire. That empire named the area the modern country is in Macedonia. It's been known as Macedonia for nearly 2000 years.
More pertinently, Greece signed an agreement acknowledging the country as North Macedonia and the people as Macedonians so even by your own country's position what OP wrote is correct.

It’s weird AF tourists to put out their flag to take photos with already 👉
What did they expect in China when there’s such similarity? 🤔
FilipAdzic97@reddit
Literally almost all tourists from the Balkans usually take a photo with their flag when they're traveling somewhere as a group, especially if its a tourist or student organization. The only similarity between the two flags is that they have a slightly similar sun design, and the color red.
Intelligent-Bee-8412@reddit

Doesn't surprise me at all. China has a friendly relationship with Greece and Serbia
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
China as an imperialist power is already exploiting Serbia to the max and Greece to a smaller extent, but still looking to have more influence around here.
BTW, most Serbs like Macedonians (if only our nationalists knew it).
georgakop_athanas@reddit
Just LOL. No exploitation from China, unlike the US-NATO-Western European one.
You are just mad whenever someone is confronting the nationalist Macedonians, and you want to take it onto China.
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
Are you sure about that? See COSCO. See how much of a colony including to China has Serbia became.
China is an imperialist and an exploiter regardless of their stance towards Macedonia, which isn't anything like this post would hint. This is an isolated incident.
georgakop_athanas@reddit
I am aware of COSCO. Best non-colonial deal the SYRIZA government made. No such deal could be made with the West.
You keep being irrationally mad at China, when you compare it's 1 military base with the US's 800+.
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
How did you reach the conclusion that it's non-colonial? (Don't get me wrong, a similar deal with a Western company wouldn't be non-colonial either.)
When we compare military bases, indeed the USA has more of them all over the world compared to China, and indeed the USA has started or intervened in way more wars. However, imperialism can't be only military, but also economical (and political I'd add).
georgakop_athanas@reddit
Yes, imperialism cannot only be military, but China isn't imperialist. It's propaganda hyperbole by US-lovers anxious about US hegemony at the worst, at the best still a debate among academics.
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
Do you consider the KKE pro-USA then?
I'm not exactly convinced, it states that the topic is debated (but so is Western and Russian imperialism).
georgakop_athanas@reddit
I consider them wrong on this particular point, falling for pro-USA propaganda.
Western imperialism is definitely not debated.
You keep trying to shittily equate everything.
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
But some people definitely disagree that the West is imperialist. They are NAFO fanboys for the most part.
Some imperialists are worse than others, but the others are still imperialists.
georgakop_athanas@reddit
Imagine taking propaganda memers seriously
The "imperialism" of 1 military base and some economic deals that are not even imperialist upon close examination, is still not enough for most of the World to turn against China. Yet you seem to have already made up your mind being a "freedom fighter" against China.
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
I'm not taking them seriously, but they exist.
Most of the world hasn't turned up against the West either, but that doesn't mean it isn't imperialist.
georgakop_athanas@reddit
You should get educated more about the 20th century's history then, because armed decolonization against the West was a thing.
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
It didn't affect most the world anymore by then. Why did our quasi-fascist government accept the English imperialists shooting at communist protesters?
georgakop_athanas@reddit
It involved the losing European colonizers, the US that tried to take the torch from them, Asia, Africa and (still under US control) South America. That's most of the world.
CriticalHistoryGreek@reddit
I admit I got the proportions wrong.
In the past decades, Western companies have re-colonized several or most of their former colonies. The reason these countries don't turn up against the West is corruption.
China has effectively colonized several countries too. I can't speak about most of them, but I can about Serbia. So many mining, construction and manufacturing projects are run by Chinese companies, disregarding safety (e.g. Novi Sad railway station), the environment (e.g. the Bor mines) and local culture (e.g. in Negrišori where they destroyed a monument). The reason the Serbian government allows this is also corruption, otherwise a big part of the Serbian nation is furious.

georgakop_athanas@reddit
My biggest pet peeve with Tito. He could have named them "Socialist Republic of Slavic Macedonia" and this shit probably wouldn't continue after 1990.
markohf12@reddit
Yes it will
Slavic Macedonia was a proposal in 1995 that eventually Greece backed out of because “Macedonia is one and only Greek”.
Also Tito didn’t name us, the people chose the name which they always used, even before Tito was born, guess what the M stands for in VMRO?
georgakop_athanas@reddit
It's a shame that the 1995 government listened to the Greek nationalists too much and denied the Slavic Macedonia name, yes.
Tito and the Yugoslav Communist Party definitely didn't like the VMRO nationalist types. It's a shame on them too, that they backed down to VRMO pressures in the naming issue.

dimitriye98@reddit
Yes. My name originates in Greece. That's because there was a time when we were all Romans and proudly so. All our ancestors would spit on us now for this petty infighting. Notably, the country of Macedonia's name comes from said empire. You're right in asserting it wasn't part of the Macedonia ruled by Alexander. It was part of the Macedonia ruled by Constantine, a far greater man.
Prod_Meteor@reddit
You woke up one day a few decades ago and felt like agent Macedonians. Then you decided to name a former region of forner Yugoslavia a name of a state of your neighbor country. Of course you choose a one with deep history because you needed a solid nationalistic base. We understand that. New state etc etc. But, you are the ones who needed this, we didn't ask you to, or agreed to. So at last, we all compromised with a geographical distinction (you are welcome we gave up a serious matter). And again, you don't feel good even with this.
