We are fast becoming 'old people yelling at clouds'. Every bunch of old fogies hates the jargon of the young...

Agree, I’m really tired of these types of posts. I’ll be removing them as soon as I see them. We had Tom Green and the bum bum song, so I don’t think we’re in any position to call out anyone over slang. 🙄

Our slang wasn't as harmful I don't feel. this new shit is designed to funnel their minds into incel culture. red pill and black pill shit. these are distinctive harmful ideologies.

guessing you don't have kids. if you think it's ok for kids to be exposed to this dark corner of the internet stuff then you're just wrong. that shit is toxic. You telling me to get off the internet as I'm saying that this slang is a red flag for kids getting too deep into toxic internet culture is a weird flex.

I feel like there is something sinister going on with inappropriate words being pushed online into young kids language with different meanings to get kids to come across bad content at a later time. Be careful out there.
View on Reddit #67892038

Shigglyboo@reddit

it really does seem that way. it's filtering into innocent content. and it gets past restrictions because they're inventing new weird stuff. how exactly is it trying to get my seven year old to work on her jawline? is it really just for the monetization?

Ehhh kids always find a way to go under the olds’ (read: our) radar. Remember “skeet”? 💦
View on Reddit #67894564

SirStocksAlott@reddit

Goon cave is a gaming term that kids are picking up. It means something completely different in an adult sense. I don’t think skeet ever had a non-sexual usage. Kids are one search away from discovering encouragement and promotion of porn addiction.

Skeet is the same as a clay pigeons used in sport shooting contests. very popular for practice for bird hunters

So fun story. I'm from a small island in the North Atlantic, population around 500k. The word "skeet" as slang has a completely different definition there. It referred to PEOPLE. Essentially poor sketchy people who would hang around bus stations or downtown. Essentially the Newfoundland version of the British "chav". It's still what I think of when I hear the word skeet, not the other thing. 😜
View on Reddit #67923194

Idk man. I knew horrific words in 5th grade. All the other kids did too. I don’t think it’s a new phenomenon.
View on Reddit #67904185

Peanut083@reddit

See, in Australia, goon is slang for cheap cask wine. If I saw “goon cave” spray painted on the shed, I’d think they were hooking into the goon or using the rotary clothes line to play ‘goon of fortune’ when I wasn’t around. Which I’d still be having words with them about.
View on Reddit #67924249

lurkylurkeroo@reddit

Ah Goon of Fortune. Those were the days. And you always had an inflatable pillow to lie on.
View on Reddit #67924942

Peanut083@reddit

The only time I ever had the opportunity to play was the day after a raging bender while travelling on the netball team bus from Melbourne to Sydney. I was still feeling rather delicate and it was 30°C outside. I think I’d have projectile vomited in technicolour if I’d gotten on the goon in that condition!
View on Reddit #67925096

lurkylurkeroo@reddit

That's also classic Goon of Fortune weather. Who in their right minds drinks chilled Goon of of a beverage receptacle? Goon is to be served at the ambient temperature (preferably >30oC) by having tappies. (I went to Uni in "regional NSW". Just typing this made me feel queasy.)

me too. it's defeatist. people are saying this is all just "slang" but I disagree. they're specific buzz words from specific beliefs and when you get wrapped up in it it's like a cult. specifically "cooked" leads to "black pill" where you decide everything is bad and life isn't worth doing because we are already "cooked".
View on Reddit #67934207

metmerc@reddit

This isn't really much different than our slang was to older generations. It's not worth getting upset or annoyed over. Except 67. That shit's hella dumb. As a parent of teens and a college professor, I think this generation of slang is both stupid and hilarious. Recently I had a conversation with a student that had been missing some class and he told me he just was a little behind and needed to “lock in”. My first instinct was to tell him “…and start your winter arc?” Usually, I hear these things from my kids, and then spend the better part of a month trying to use/overuse them around the house in casual conversation…bonus points if it is slightly incorrect/forced and I get audible groans.

I feel like I understand the slang better than younger millennials and older Zs. Is that sort of a trend for our cohort? It also seems like more of the xennials I know are understanding vs bewildered. We had a ton of slang growing up ourselves. Dunno why. Could be because I'm making an effort to parse it because I hate feeling like I can't understand the kids.

The years are long when you’re young. I’m 42 and the difference between 4th and 6th grade was far greater than 30 to 40. Slang cycles through a full life cycle with kids I assume in a matter of months. Our discussion of anything is an archeological dig looking at fossils going “this part must have been used for this..”

"Unalive" just makes life sound like a phase before some next phase, some spirit phase that doesn't exist. Death is death! Suicide is horrible and needs to sound horrible. Murder/Killed/Died are tragic things and need to sound tragic. "Unalive" is something you say to a 5 year old that wouldn't understand the complexity of death. Saying "unalived" just sounds like something Orwell would've made up in "1984", as if akin to being "unpersoned".

I honestly don't know why every generation seems so afraid of slang. We all had it. It's hastened greatly by social media, but this is how languages change and develop, and if it didn't, we would basically all be speaking Proto Sinaitic or Proto Indo-European.
