Technically yes when looking at outer dimensions. But on the inside, the Macan and Cayenne are in the small size of the class. In fact they sometimes have comparable or less space than even one class down. In the real world the Macan feels noticeably smaller than the X3 in my experience while the X3 and Cayenne feel very similar. Also I believe the iX3 is rated for more cargo space than the all new Cayenne EV.

We have a Cayenne Hybrid and it is definitely not that efficiently packaged. I am very curious about the iX3 since the Porsches software and switchgear absolutely suck.

Tbf, the X5 which is more similarly sized to the Cayenne does not have much more claimed legroom than the X3. My parents and sister have noted there's not as much legroom in my X5 as they would have expected. Seems like that's on trend for BMW, except for the X7, especially with a bench seat. Apparently in the X7, the second row can be slid back to eat up much of the legroom in the third row.

Yes the X5 is slightly smaller than average for the segment. Cars like the Q7, GV70, MDX, and GLE all have a bit more space. Cayenne feels more like a compact crossover though. Not much more spacious than a Q5 for example

It's crazy how small the Macan feels. The height and profile from the outside make it look like its going to be a small SUV, and then you get inside and it feels like a subcompact in there.

It seems like manufacturers are trending towards amalgamating the looks of their lineups to such an extent that it is now very difficult to distinguish different models. And this is no exception.

This will mostly compete with the iX/iX5 G65. What this comparison shows well though is how much more light/ efficient the Neue Klasse EVs are. The iX3 gets 200km more range out of the same size battery (on the WLTP cycle) and it’s roughly 400kg lighter than the Cayenne. Seems like the switch to cylindrical cells and the improved packaging without separate modules really paid off.

BMW's EV strategy has been more measured than their competitors. They never said a word one way or the other about any long-term plans to go fully electric. Their current CLAR-based EVs (i4, i5, i7) are mediocre in charging performance. Their response was basically, "chargers are too slow for 350 kW anyway so we're not wasting R&D money. Wait for Neue Klasse." And the biggest difference has been that EVs are a different entry source and nothing more, you buy a BMW and decide whether you want an engine or motors + battery. For the most part, Mercedes' and Audi's EVs have been disappointing compared to their similar ICEVs. It seems like most premium brands either panicked or were too eager to be publicly in favor of EVs. I remember BMW getting criticism in EV spaces for not jumping on that bandwagon too. Even now people still complain about the vestigial transmission hump on principle. But their EV rollout has been more successful than Audi and Mercedes. And Porsche too, although a lot of their problems aren't because of the EVs themselves but what they cost relative to competitors.

The packaging is less space-efficient than a ground-up EV with a skateboard battery pack and flat floor across the cabin. EV purists don't like the CLAR-based BMW EVs for that reason.

I agree completely. Every time I go to that sub there's so much complaining about auto makers. Yeah there are things that suck about the whole EV thing - charging infrastructure, fewer choices, etc. But EVs are only around 10% adoption. It's a process and it'll get better. Nobody can see the bigger picture.

Battery size is 14% larger than the Macan. The macan battery size is good, this is a bit of a letter down But man, they offer 11kw wireless charging now. That is so cool. It might also produce enough heat that you can melt snow and ice from your driveway during winter

The charging pad stays in the garage haha. Also they claim almost the same efficiency as a normal wired charger meaning the energy loss due to heat is surprisingly not that high

The BMW iX3 is more of a competitor to the Macan EV, not the Cayenne EV. In terms of size and pricing, the Cayenne EV will be in a higher league — more comparable to the BMW iX5 or even iX6. Porsche sometimes offers surprisingly less interior space than rivals one class down, but in terms of positioning and brand perception, the Cayenne clearly plays in the premium segment.

Agreed. But when looking at raw specs they are surprisingly similar (like cargo space, and even numerous powertrain specs). Typically it isn't always the case. We'll have to see if the iX5 packs anything crazier or not

we need more screen. make the entire interior a screen. give me a screen with a button to open the door instead of the handle. a screen with a cutout for a drink holder. the rear view mirror? screen. steering wheel? screen. in fact why even have the windshield, what is it 1990? just make it a screen and put a camera in the front. we'll finally be able to stop not looking at a screen 24/7.
