First e-bike build TSDZ16

First e-bike build completed. TSDZ16 1000w motor with 52v 20ah battery and EKD01 display. Happy with results and easy to fit, took around 4hours to complete. Was between this and BBSHD. Chosen TSDZ16 for torque sensor. As this is my first e-bike I cannot compare to other models but seems pretty powerful and can assist with ease especially in PAS level 5. Went for my first 10mile ride today, no problems going up hill, around the local trails or on road. Top speed achieved was 38mph on a slight decline. Can easily average 30mph for commuting. No overheating issues, motor was slightly warm but that’s about it. The only thing I was slightly disappointed with is throttle response, it is very slow to pick up speed. Although I won’t be using it a lot I expected more. The power feels like it’s there to really get you going, maybe it’s something to do with firmware from factory rather than the motor itself.

Hey so I was looking at the motor because I am interested in buying it but i have some questions first from some people that own the motor:
Will it feel like an E-moto or E-scooter acceleration or will it feel more like an E-bike With Pedal assist if I use throttle only
Does it overheat much?
3.What is the top speed in the real world in flat road

Looks awesome. I'm tempted by this motor too, but the physical size of it is crazy compared to most mid drives. How is the chain line, and did the stock chainring fit properly?

I mean the motor is fairly big but I didn’t even notice it was there to be honest. I had no issue with bottoming out on trails etc and it doesn’t draw any unwanted attention. Chain line is okay with the chain ring offset. I have 8 speed cassette and can use 2 - 8. 1 does skip a little so I will just have to sacrifice that. I had to use 2 spacers which came with the motor to clear the chain stay.

At you still happy with it? Any issues?

Heya op! 👋🏻
Any issues with the battery at all? Or the engine cutting off?
Also have u set up the controller to read the 52v battery?
I'm also tempted but there is no official info regarding 52v
GrimmestGrimmm@reddit (OP)
No issues with any components and within the display, it gives you an option to choose if you have 48v or 52v battery.

There is a walking mode, you can hold the - (minus) button and it will slowly go around a constant 3mph whilst you walk with it. Pretty decent addition they added to save pushing it along.

I've done two TSDZ2 conversions which have immediate but totally controllable throttle response and one TSDZ8 which has a throttle with a very slight delay then straight to 100%. I live in a mountain area where I need a controllable throttle as I have sections of bad, steep track where I need to walk alongside, using a very small amount of throttle. One TSDZ16 guy has told me that it's an off/on switch and another on Reddit says it's sluggish: what's your experience, is it controllable at low speeds? A small delay for me doesn't matter, I just don't want wheelies on a steep slow with bile loaded with shopping. This is a copy/paste of another post on this channel, hope you don't mind. TIA.

I've done two TSDZ2's and 1 TSDZ8. I need a slow, controllable throttle response for the dirt track where I live. Steep section where I need to walk alongside with throttle just keep pace with me. (Walk assist is a waste of time for me). The 2's are fine but the 8 shoots off like a rocket, ok on open road if there's no cops around but useless for me. I need to get up a steep footpath to my house with like 12kg of shopping, that's why I need controllability. Will the 16 be usable for me?

Fantastic! I'm very interested in this motor as an alternative to the bbshd because of the torque sensing. My only hesitation is that I intend to ride throttle only on atv trails. My hub motor ebike is nice for that, but im curious how it feels to leave it in a single gear all the time with a mid drive.

Throttle only with TSDZ16 is pretty much impossible. Throttle response is awful

Some update?
jepherz@reddit
Just built a bike with tsdz8 and as much as I love it, I really wish I had known there was a 16!
Ok_Top9885@reddit
Isn't tsdz8 not enough?
jepherz@reddit
You can always use more power! But yeah, it totally meets my needs.
athiestamerican68@reddit
why in the world is the motor THERE of all places? what a stupid spot to put it😭

people are buying

Any updates on using this?

Great job, looks cool. May I ask how much this cost?
GrimmestGrimmm@reddit (OP)
It cost 600 including the battery
modus_bonens@reddit
Hell yeah looking good. Bet it feels exciting to climb hills with your new bionic legs. If I sell my bbshd I'm definitely getting one of these new tsdz16 kits.
Justux205@reddit
I wonder how is the build quality of those Varstrom batteries, They say that they use samsung cells
FlopsNdrops@reddit
Pretty solid, I have their 48v 19.2Ah and 48v 20Ah both nearing 300 miles. I’ve gone on 50+ mile rides fully loaded in the rain and on trails without dropping below 50% of max voltage
winndowsten@reddit
How much did this cost you overall? I have this same frame sitting in my shed right now
GrimmestGrimmm@reddit (OP)
After some back and forth with the seller I got it for 600 including battery and a few extras.

lookin very good ! very impressive !

Great work! Can you get a picture of the side with the crank and chain on please?

Great work man! I’ve been looking at converting mine, but you’ve done a great job with this! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

Sure!

Very nice build. Throttle response is definitely firmware issue. I’ve updated my BBSHD but for opposite - to lower sensitivity
yzscrum@reddit
pretty sure the quality of the throttle plays alot into how good it is, and then your computer. i could be wrong.
jorbl@reddit
It would be great if TS and Bafang put a sine wave controller on their motor instead of these outdated block wave controllers
NPCLee@reddit
Where was this ordered from? How long did it take to deliver?
GrimmestGrimmm@reddit (OP)
I ordered mine from eBay. Came from Poland, motor delivered in 4 days although the battery came in 2 days.
