Worth upgrading to a 5080 right now?

I am currently using a 4070 Ti Super so this wouldn't be a huge upgrade, but I'm tempted to do it anyway now that you can find 5080s reliably at MSRP. I can sell my current card for $650 in profit, so looking at \~$400 for an upgrade after tax. I am playing at 4K which is my primary reason for wanting more performance. 4070 Ti Super struggles a bit on newer AAA games and you need to really lean into DLSS and frame gen to keep framerates decent. I am aware that 50 Super series is likely releasing in the next few months, that's one of the main reasons I am debating on holding off on an upgrade. My fear though is that 5080 Super will end up being more expensive (maybe $1200) and might take forever to be able to find at MSRP, like mid to late 2026. By waiting for a Super I could be pushing off an upgrade by an entire year potentially. What would you do in my situation? I "settled" on a 4070 Ti Super last year and have been wanting more performance at 4K ever since.

I mean if you can sell that for $650 just get a 5070 ti for $100. That’s totally worth it

Last year I settled on a 4070 Ti Super instead of a 4080 Super and regretted it, don't want to make the same mistake again getting the weaker card and saving some money.

I am curious, could you describe scenarios when you experienced that you should've really gone with 4080 Super. What type of workflow setup had such an impact you felt regret for getting a better value card? Because they are nearly similar in 90% of use cases and if the 4070ti super struggled to keep up with your expectations, 4080 super wouldn't be much of a relief.

You made a fine choice last year, 4070 ti super is a really good card. Having using both, MSRP for MSRP the 5070ti is a better buy than the 5080. In demanding 4k titles were talking single digit FPS gains, hardly worth it IMO.

Yeah its pretty much confirmed at this point Supers are getting announced and released in January. Extra VRAM would be nice on 5080S, but again I think it might take forever to find one at MSRP.

The one thing we *don’t* know is the price, but the rumors I’m seeing are that the cards will be a similar price or even a bit cheaper, on account of the strong competition that AMD is bringing rn. It’s also important to keep in mind that ALL we have is rumors right now, even the existence of the cards is not official yet. It’s not even impossible we’ll see the cards this year, though January at CES is the most likely announce date. You’re gaming at 4K. and you have a good 16GB card already. In your place I’d actually not upgrade until at least early 2027 when the 6000-series (and AMD RDNA5) will make an appearance.. but if you are set on upgrading this gen, absolutely wait for the 24GB VRAM 5070 Ti Super or 5080 Super. You’ll probably regret it if you don’t.

Wait for next generation, I had the 4070tiS and now have the 5070ti, a 5080 would feel better but the difference in fps would still be too small for it to be worth.

4k gamer here. I agree with u/DrLogic0. I don't think the difference would justify $400 unless you really, really want a few extra frames. In the meantime, if the 4070 Ti is struggling on AAA games, it makes sense to toggle down a few settings. Not all of them. There are guides on which settings have more impact than others, and it's subjective based on what you want. So you can choose what to lower. The DLSS quality level or resolution scaling will have the biggest impact, next to things like lower raycasting, shadows, and global illumination. I personally find very little difference in things like raycasting, global illumination, foliage quality, volumetric fog, particle effects, and water reflections, so I turn those down. But I don't turn them off completely, because I can absolutely tell the difference when it's on. In slow paced games with very detailed textures (like Starfield), I can tell the difference between DLSS levels so I prioritize higher quality while turning down other settings. In fast paced games like Marvel Rivals, or games with less detailed textures, there is almost no difference in DLSS quality so I turn it down to get a huge performance bump. Your mileage will vary.

I would just wait for supers in your case, honestly. It's about a 30% upgrade which isn't terrible, but $400 more and a lot of work to sell your old one. Especially if you're playing at 4k, the extra VRAM will be really nice for you. 16GB already runs into issues in a few titles, and 5080 has that same 16GB vram as the 4070ti super / 5070ti.

Don't upgrade. You've had the card for what? A year? A bit more? What game can't you play with DLSS enabled? I wouldn't wait for the 5080 Super, though. From the rumored specs it's gonna have a minimal performance increase over the standard 5080. Just wait for the 60 series. Your card is powerful enough for now - at least if you actually care about your overall gaming experience, and not about ego-gaming with everything at ultra for no reason.

It's a straight upgrade. Not a massive one but definitely noticeable at 4K. With a good OC on the 5080 probably 40-45% performance increase and also have access to MFG which my 4070 Ti Super can't use.

My honest guess is that the super cards are going to be hard to find and expensive of they are indeed increasing the vram significantly. Anyone messing around with AI is going to be on that shit instantly. I've seen the 5080 going on sale for as low as $929 recently and that makes it a fairly compelling purchase.
