Is Nottingham or Sheffield city centre nicer?

Hi, I'm looking to move North from London to somewhere reasonably affordable and I've narrowed down to Sheffield and Nottingham.
I'm mainly interested in which has the nicer city centre. I'm going to visit both soon but I'm interested on what people's takes are! I'm not particularly fussed about shopping (I'm aware Sheffield's a little fragmented with Meadowhall) and mainly just how pleasant & safe the places feel to walk around, pubs, aesthetics and general vibes. Being a bit quiet during the daytime isn't a massive dealbreaker to me.
I've done a little bit of Google Maps "exploring" and trawling through reddit takes. Sentiment seems to skew negative about both, but the only places I'd expect much positivity about the city centres are too pricey anyway (thinking York). If anyone who's spent time in both could compare that'd be great.
A few questions:
-
Which is nicer in general, more aesthetically pleasing, etc.?
-
Which has better/nicer places to eat/drink?
-
Which is less sketchy?

Nottingham.

1 Sheffield had a disastrous 60/70s style town center, but the recent changes are really transforming it into something more livable. Nottingham has a very nice traditional town/city, but recent developments seem to have created a bit of a wasteland where it should be a central square or something. Hopefully development will continue and improve.
2 both have nice, and/or trendy locations with lots of bars. Sheffield's interesting bit is a bit further out from the city cwnter.
3 both seemed fine. Sheffield seems poorer generally. It's got a B&M. They've both got a Marks and Spencer. Nottingham has a couple of good cycle paths.

Haven't been to Nottingham for a long while but went to Sheffield recently. Seems to be a good bar/food scene in Sheffield with a decent amount of breweries and like someone else said Kelham Island is nice. However the town centre is full of druggies and destitute people. I know some people will say everywhere is, but it had a horrible atmosphere.

I've worked in both. I love some areas of Nottingham, especially the Lace Market end of town, but Sheffield probably edges it overall for me

Of the two, I'd pick Sheffield. Of all northern English cities I'd pick Newcastle.

As long as you avoid The Moor, Sheffield is imo.
I grew up in Sheffield and live in Nottingham. Nottingham is significantly smaller with less variety. The Arboretum is nice, but not really a part of the city centre.
