Kielbasa_Nunchucka@reddit
yep, going in a couple weeks for my birthday, can't wait. gonna be out there for 5 days straight!
Nicetonotmeetyou@reddit
I like it, but am too old for tent camping.
AvonMustang@reddit
We used to tent camp but my wife decided she was getting too old for it so now we have a little teardrop camper. It's not much of an upgrade but it is off the ground...
Nicetonotmeetyou@reddit
We had a camper van, butt recently sold it. Sleeping on the ground is definitely for young people lol.
wonderlustVA@reddit
For short stints, two to three nights max. It's nice to just sit and enjoy nature and not feel like you should be doing more.
wonderlustVA@reddit
I will add that I don't do backwoods camping. I do tent camp, but at campgrounds with bath houses.
Constant-Security525@reddit
I always enjoyed it. My husband was up for it in our early marriage, but gradually expressed too much discomfort in doing it. There is a 13 year age difference between us. That's part of it.
qbb_beauty@reddit
My family’s joke about the only acceptable camping is: 1. Rent a camper 2. Drive to the nearest Holiday Inn 3. Park 4. Go inside
That said, I think it’s wonderful that people enjoy it… but it’s not for me. I am an indoor human.
ajaxdrivingschool@reddit
My family’s idea of camping is a gigantic trailer with a slide out. They took a tv and satellite dish with them so that I could stay inside and watch TV.
CandleSea4961@reddit
Omg- loved it when I was younger!!!!
Lovinthesea3@reddit
Yes, I love it. I love that we have to be outside all day and night. I love having a campfire. I love going on hikes in the woods. I love camping in the middle of BIG tree’s with a lake a few feet away. I love the time to connect. I love being stuck all together. I don’t care to sleep on the ground. Grown out of that. I love camping. Up north, the best in the fall!
plastictoothpicks@reddit
Love it. It’s one of my favorite pastimes.
drinkdrinkshoesgone@reddit
Same. Im camping right now! My maple firewood isn't staying lit, and I think because it got rained on momentarily last week.
TheRealTaraLou@reddit
How are you camping and still on reddit
Look_Up_Here@reddit
We have cellular service in the U.S.
TheRealTaraLou@reddit
I live in the us too, but i have never camped anywhere that I've had cell service
Look_Up_Here@reddit
In the Northeast US, at least, we have good cell service that will cover most of the White and Green mountains as well as the Berkshires and most of the local Appalachian Trail.
DaMmama1@reddit
Being someone who lives in the Northeast US, I am often baffled when I see a news story about someone who has gone missing or some sort of crime, and the reporter says “the victim lost cell service”, or “they had no cell signal”. I forget that can actually happen until I travel 🤦🏼♀️
TheRealTaraLou@reddit
I live in the PNW so it may be a. It different
cyvaquero@reddit
I’ll note that while some areas in the NE Appalachians get good reception others not so much.
The PA Wilds (loosely north of I-80 to the NY border and between I-79 & I-81) gets real iffy on signal as soon as you are out of the old mill towns that dot the region.
No_Procedure_3799@reddit
Hell, depending on where in the PNW, you barely get cell signal in towns
floofienewfie@reddit
PNW is really iffy. Got a good signal at Umpqua lighthouse but no signal at Tugman state park not too far away. Only time we can truly count on a signal is when we’re in a town for supplies.
Look_Up_Here@reddit
That makes sense. The Northeast is small enough that you are rarely more than 25 miles from a decent sized community. The exception being north west Maine.
TheRealTaraLou@reddit
I would love to hike and camp up there though. Ive heard it's beautif
jrice138@reddit
I thru hiked the AT and had service pretty much everyday the whole way.
Ok_Membership_8189@reddit
In 2010, on an island on Lake George in the Adirondacks, I was awakened from sleep (I was hammock camping) by a beaver whose territory I had, apparently, invaded. I had enough cell service to be on some camping forum getting advice for my rather intense and physical, not to mention frightening, predicament. It was quite the scene, ending up with me standing on the picnic table, glowing android in one hand, waving the other silently at my bared-teeth aggressor. All silently, because my friend was asleep in her tent and I didn’t want her to awaken and come out, lest she be endangered.
After about 15 minutes, having told me off sufficiently I suppose, the beaver left. 1-2 hours later I was able to go back to bed and get to sleep, although I got to see and photograph a beautiful sunrise first.
When I told the story to my family, my father’s response was “you didn’t need a cell phone, you needed a stick.” And while I realize he was right, perhaps I DID need a stick—for my other hand. The forum was hugely helpful. I didn’t feel alone. And I had the chance to fully appreciate the irony of the situation. Being simultaneously alone and not alone.
So yeah, I like camping. Not all of us do. My kids hate it. Probably because their childhood wasn’t as safe and secure as I would’ve wanted to make it, and we did some camping.
clairejv@reddit
I've had cell service at most places I've camped. In California, you're only without service in SERIOUSLY remote areas.
EonJaw@reddit
Yeah - last time we had connection but no way to charge our batteries.
EonJaw@reddit
Congrats. Gets hard to find places like that anymore.
GeneralBlumpkin@reddit
Some places are a hit and miss. I've been to very remote places for work too and I surprisingly had reception
TSells31@reddit
I can’t remember the last time I was somewhere without cell service. And I live in BFE Iowa, even in our most rural areas I have 5G.
Not saying dead zones don’t exist but they’re so exceedingly few and far between these days in the US. At least with the major carriers.
K6PUD@reddit
I wish I could say that! It seems almost nowhere is safe from cell service now. We have to go deep into the woods and canyons to drop cell coverage. Even then you find someone scouting the ridges looking for signal.
Cereal____Killer@reddit
WHY are you camping and still on Reddit is the better question…
“I want to get away from it all… except Reddit, I need my fix”
EnthusiasmBusy6066@reddit
Some campsites arent remote at all.
TheRealTaraLou@reddit
Sorry I guess I live in in the sticks already so part of the joy of camping is being away from all internet access and looking for aliens. Dispersed camping is the only way I'll camp. Sometimes I forget park camping exists
AdhesiveSeaMonkey@reddit
I barely have service in my town! Once I get into the mountains, 5 minutes away, it’s the 1860’s up there. I do take a sat phone for emergencies though.
sparksgirl1223@reddit
I'm with you. I prefer not having access for awhile.
drinkdrinkshoesgone@reddit
I prefer dispersed camping, but my wife wanted to stay by the beach. My son and wife went to bed already and im just waiting for my embers to go out.
TheRealTaraLou@reddit
Ohhh yeah I can see that. I sometimes forget that not all people live remotely enough to camp in odd places. Enjoy your fire
CVieira12@reddit
A lot of the U.S. has cell service. I was camping in Olympic National Park this summer and had 5G.
Relevant_Elevator190@reddit
Glamping.
drinkdrinkshoesgone@reddit
Idk, no power or running water. We do have some sort of bathroom, though. We're in a tent, and there's no pavement around.
drinkdrinkshoesgone@reddit
I usually camp waaaaaay up in the cascade mountains where you dont have service for at least an hour of driving from your campsite, but this weekend im camping by the beach in OR and we have great service out here.
inquisitivebarbie@reddit
Hell no
gadget850@reddit
Been a Scout for 55 years, so yes.
kae0603@reddit
I love camping. Going again with my daughter in a couple of weeks
HidingInTrees2245@reddit
I love camping. It’s one of my favorite things to do in the world.
WithRealPeaches@reddit
I'm curious where OP is from and what they consider camping.
I live in Spain and "camping" means staying in basically a fancy trailer park on the beach with your family and friends. Not shitting in the woods.
weeziefield1982@reddit
Yes!
shessocold1969@reddit
Love it. I wish it was easier to book spots at State Parks on Reserve California though. They sell out far in advance. We end spending a lot more for private campgrounds. Although privately campgrounds are nicer.
Ms_Schuesher@reddit
Not especially, but I go because my husband and kids love it. Thankfully, it's just a few times a year.
Living-Reason-1959@reddit
I enjoy RVing, but actual camping? No.
As a woman, I've found that it's basically the same work as being home, but without the conveniences. Add bugs, no toilets, and sleeping on the ground. No thanks.
Beagalltach@reddit
Yes I love camping, but sadly my wife is an absolute mosquito magnet. Each mosquito bite she gets becomes very swollen, extremely itchy, hard to the touch, and warm.
Needless to say, I don't make as much time for camping as I would like. I only get out 2-3 times a year.
Meridian122@reddit
I’m also a mosquito magnet too and use 30% deet which works well for me, but I mainly camp in the Pacific Northwest and it sounds like other areas are much worse
WyoA22@reddit
I’m a mosquito magnet also and allergic. When we camp, I pretty much spend all my time in our screen tent. Otherwise I’ve found Picaridin works so much better than deet.
Purplehopflower@reddit
I grew up camping and enjoyed it when I was younger. Now, I kind of hate it. I love being out in nature, but after a day of hiking or kayaking, I want to come back to a comfortable bed and plumbing that’s in the next room and not across the campground and shared with others or just non-existent.
Folksma@reddit
Ok ok, so hear me out....I don't enjoy camping. I fully support the right of everyone to camp and will always be happy to support public land/national park
But I am what I like to call an "inside human". I grew up poor so our "vacation" was always a weekend in a tent from Walmart on my uncle's property. Hated every moment of it
I have the app for every hotel chain download
porkchopespresso@reddit
Indoorsy
Living-Reason-1959@reddit
I'm not outdoorsy, but I am outsidey.
Give me a covered porch, a cafe with patio seating, or a hammock.
just_some_Fred@reddit
I am what you would call "indoorsy"
DynamiteWitLaserBeam@reddit
That's me. This song sums it up for me.
GiraffeLibrarian@reddit
Have you heard SpongeBob’s song about being indoors? Classic
Crayshack@reddit
I travel a lot for work, so I get a lot of chances to rack up hotel points while swiping the company card. I'm at the point where I can easily take a trip and pay nothing to stay in a nice hotel.
djfilms@reddit
What?! People camp for recreation, not because they can’t afford anything else.
Crayshack@reddit
I explain it in another comment, but I camped a bunch as a kid, and I sort of got sick of it as I got older.
newishanne@reddit
My mom traveled a lot for work so we always stayed in hotels, even though we also did a lot of national park trips. So I didn’t start camping until I was in my 40s and we no longer had those points, but now I love it.
Traegs_@reddit
I hate camping too. I gotta put on my shoes to pee in the middle of the night? Fuck that.
TucsonTacos@reddit
I’m also a recluse.
But sometimes I like to be a recluse in the woods
gard3nwitch@reddit
Some parks let you rent a cabin or yurt! So you can be a recluse in the woods and still have a bed and a roof and a bathroom lol
TucsonTacos@reddit
The world is my bathroom, brother
xworfx@reddit
Hey me.
AdhesiveSeaMonkey@reddit
It’s funny, I grew up in cities and my wife’s family are basically all feral. But she hates camping and I love it.
vu_sua@reddit
Yah exactly. Why am I going to cosplay being poor when I did that for real when I was younger.
DrunkGuy9million@reddit
Im an “outdoor human.” But want to say that I totally understand why a person wouldn’t be, and really appreciate that you support our parks anyway. Cheers to mutual respect!
Twirlmom9504_@reddit
I’m an “outdoor person” and love swimming, boating, hiking, kayaking, tubing, etc. But when I finish those activities I want to clean off using indoor plumbing and sleeping in my real bed. I just never feel clean when I am camping.
Peachy0715@reddit
this
EnthusiasmBusy6066@reddit
Im a prissy little princess in my normal life, I often shower twice a day. But when Im camping a switch flips and I am cool with being dirty.
Accomplished_Will226@reddit
I’d consider glamming
AccountantRadiant351@reddit
Nearly identical cause to my dislike of camping here.
_Internet_Hugs_@reddit
My friend says, "I'm outdoorsy. As in: I enjoy getting drunk on patios."
Twirlmom9504_@reddit
I think behind most firm non-campers is a childhood spent unhappily camping with family. My grandparents only took camping trips when my mom was a kid. she is very allergic to poison ivy, sumac and oak as well as bees and some spiders. She wasn’t made for long periods in the woods. When my parents had us she told my dad we were never going camping with her , because she wouldn’t go. I went once on a school trip and it was fine. Not my favorite. We always used hotels or stayed with relatives .
etds3@reddit
That's so funny because I think the way to make campers is to take kids camping a ton. I think you have to learn to love it while you're still young enough to not care about dirt. Granted, being allergic to everything around you puts a real damper on the experience.
Accomplished_Will226@reddit
I used to camp. I was a scout and all. But now I feel like we are roughing it if we don’t have high thred count Egyptian cotton bedding and a king size bed in a lovely hotel.
Mrlin705@reddit
Our vacation was always camping too, I appreciate it more as an adult, but I hate how much work it is. Hotels require that I show up, that's it.
etds3@reddit
It's a lot of work. However, I prefer sleeping in my tent trailer to a hotel. It feels like home because it's my own space. I mean, I'm still glad to get back to my own bed, but it doesn't feel foreign like a hotel does.
Affectionate-Use6412@reddit
My 6 year old says he's not an outdoor cat, lol. My bigger definitely is. He wouldn't come in unless you made him, every time
SevenSixOne@reddit
Same.
I'm especially uninterested in camping if the weather is anything less than ideal, which means there are only like two brief windows in late spring and early autumn where I would even consider the possibility of maybe thinking about going camping... and only for a night or two, don't push your luck!
4514N_DUD3@reddit
I grew up poor and wasn’t able to do any camping, now I try to find every excuse to camp and hunt.
Itsdanaozideshihou@reddit
We didn't get grounded growing up. We got threatened with not being able to go camping, hunting or fishing. 20 years later and I can still smell those cheap tent's and I love it! There's sometimes I absolutely love to read other peoples experiences!
derpiotaku@reddit
Same. Except I’ve always lived in rural areas and hated it.
As an adult, I am visually impaired/can’t drive. That’s really hinders my ability to be able to have a lot of independence and freedom so I’m basically isolated to my surroundings a lot of times. I live in large metro area because I need to in order to survive. So I have this almost… “survival need” to be in a city in near necessities. I hate the idea of being in the middle of nowhere stranded and being dirty. The idea of it makes me extremely anxious.
KingDarius89@reddit
I did when I was younger. Haven't been camping in about 20 years.
Used to go camping every summer with my brother, grandparents, and cousins. That pretty much ended when my grandma got bone cancer. Only been once since then, when I was a teenager, for my brother's birthday.
oceanbreze@reddit
I used to tent camp 4 to 5 times a year. This year it went down to 3.
When it comes to cell phone service and electricity, it really depends on WHERE you are camping.
Personally, if I am camping, my phone is locked in the trunk, and all other electronics are at home.
With one exception: I currently have an elderly relative in a care home. We are trying to get him out. So, the phone will be checked 2 to 3x a day on my next trip next week.
chaamdouthere@reddit
Somewhat. I dislike getting ready to go camping, (everything from packing to setting up the tent) and I don’t like the sleeping part (I don’t ever sleep well). But I like being out in nature and waking up in nature and hanging out and having campfires and stuff.
NexusDarkshade@reddit
It's okay. I go camping once every few years.
Really, my only complaint about it is how dirty/dusty everything gets. I don't mind rain or cold, hard ground is easily fixed with a decent pad, and smoky smelling clothes from campfires don't bother me. Most campgrounds have proper toilets these days, or at least an outhouse, so that's not an issue either. It really is just that everything gets covered in a thin layer of dirt within a day, no matter how clean you try to be, which I dislike. If it weren't for that, I'd go camping more often.
quadmoo@reddit
Nope I like cities I do not like bugs and having no WiFi
jonesnori@reddit
I used to, before my back became unreliable. I grew up camping with my family, and my late husband and I went tent camping for our honeymoon (and before and after that as well). I'd still be willing to use a tent-cabin with a cot and mattress. I stayed in one in Yosemite a few yeats ago, and it was nice.
kalelopaka@reddit
When I was younger, but now my spine can’t take sleeping rough.
Regular_Yellow710@reddit
In Oregon, everyone camps. It’s the state religion.
khurd18@reddit
I did when I was a kid. I have fond memories of going camping with my parents every summer from age 8-15. Now I'm content to go to a state park for a day but I prefer sleeping in my own bed or at a hotel
gypsysniper9@reddit
I used to, but I have slept on my last tent.
puffinthewy@reddit
Yes I love it, it’s one of my favourite things to do. Especially after moving to Finland, since there are every man’s rights and there is a strong outdoors culture here.
LateForDinner61@reddit
Many of my friends love camping, but I hate it. Someone I know refers to it as pretending to be homeless.
Personally, I want a real bed, climate control and a nice bathroom.
Aloh4mora@reddit
No, I hate it a lot. In my opinion, we built cities with comfortable beds to get away from having to sleep on the ground and get awakened at 4 am by birds.
But my kid LOVES IT, so I have been camping far more times than I myself prefer.
No-Coyote914@reddit
Depends. My honeymoon was spent camping in a national park. So obviously I like it under the right conditions.
But some places under some conditions, camping is hellish.
we-have-to-go@reddit
Yes
Sleepygirl57@reddit
Very much
AstraeaOfJustice@reddit
No. Only glamping.
Ferowin@reddit
Not even a little bit.
JNorJT@reddit
Not frequently but I wouldn’t mind going once every blue moon
justamiqote@reddit
Yes, I would go camping monthly if financially and logistically possible.
Impressive_Profit_11@reddit
YES. I actually said earlier today, that I want to go camping again. I miss it. We have not been since July.
PineappleFit317@reddit
Nah. I’m what one would call “Indoorsy”. I like having ready access to clean running water, a daily shower, and having walls and a roof to keep bugs and wild animals away while I sleep.
LilPebzz@reddit
Fuck no. Roughing it is staying in a hotel without room service
SmokeEaterGal09@reddit
Yes, love camping & being out with nature.
ThisMomIsAMother@reddit

Appropriate-Count-64@reddit
Yep. Haven’t had the chance in a while but camping is very zen.
Caidan-Phoenix-832@reddit

Sea-Raccoon-810@reddit

Duplica123@reddit
In college I used to kind of like camping, but now I'm paranoid about being murdered in my tent
Wyklar2@reddit
Love it!
JimmyB264@reddit
Hate it with a passion. I don’t like the smoke, dirt, bugs, food, weather. I also don’t like the activities that go with it. Swimming, hiking, mountain biking aren’t things that appeal to me.
I’m not fond of nature except when seen from inside a fancy resort window. I also don’t like RV’s. Why would I want to drive my house somewhere at exorbitant cost only to park in a parking lot with a bunch of random people.
Don’t tell me I should try it. I’ve learned to hate it from half a lifetime of experience.
carlosmurphynachos@reddit
Nope. I like bathrooms with plumbing. And hot showers and hot meals.
anneofgraygardens@reddit
yes.
dedrack1@reddit
It's the main thing I do with my time off of work
No-Agent-1611@reddit
I hate camping. It isn’t a vacation if you not only have to do all the work you do at home, you have to do it without running water or electricity, plus you have to pack and carry everything with you.
A rustic motel and hiking every day? Sure. Camping? Let me know when you’re back.
blindside1@reddit
Yes. I'm a Scoutmaster for a Scout Troop, we go out every month.
thegurlearl@reddit
I love it, I would go by myself but my mom would worry like crazy. Im also physically disabled now so most of my favorite spots I cant get to now. I just wanna be up high where its cold and not service.
Splugarth@reddit
Love hiking. Love sleeping in a real bed.
Footnotegirl1@reddit
I cannot stand it. I would rather spend that time in solitary confinement than use a hole in the ground to go to the bathroom. Not that I dislike nature, but give me a cabin with a real bathroom and a working kitchen.
That said, my husband and kiddo both love it.
Ok_Illustrator5694@reddit
I love parts of camping. Like being out away from city lights and seeing stars, having a campfire… but I want to sleep indoors in a proper bed with a flush toilet that I don’t have to get dressed and walk outside to
devilscabinet@reddit
Yes, but I haven't done it in a very long time. I have sleep apnea and have to use a CPAP machine at night, which makes camping more of a challenge (unless you are in a camper with electrical hookups). I'm saving up money now to get a "travel CPAP" that can run all night on a battery and is light enough (even with the battery) to haul around the woods. That will make it easier to get back to both camping and international travel. I have been learning more "bushcraft" skills over the past couple of years, and am eager to try them out somewhere beyond my own back yard.
omgcheez@reddit
I have never been, but it looks fun.
AmandaWildflower@reddit
Ummm Yeh…. It’s nice to canoe or go for a trail ride then camp and keep going camp again…. Etc…. Around here season can be an issue.
TreasureTheSemicolon@reddit
No. I have a t-shirt that was gifted to me that says INDOORSY.
Beneficial-Ideal7243@reddit

Kitzka04@reddit
No. Absolutely not.
theflipflopqueen@reddit
Yes and No.
Camping in my cute little RV, or a truck camper or even in the back of the SUV= YES!
Camping in a tent= HELL NO! I HATE being a prepackaged ziplocked bear snack. I can’t sleep in a tent.
(I live in an area bears are very common)
OddDragonfruit7993@reddit
My friend, I purchased 20 acres of land far outside a decent-sized city, but not so far I can't commute, just so I could camp while building a cabin in the woods. I've lived here over 30 years, and always feel like I'm camping.

salchichasconpapas@reddit

Sonnyjoon91@reddit
I do! I went camping at moon lake in August, went to monument valley last year, took my dogs on a camping roadtrip
gravityandlove@reddit
Anytime we get the chance we are camping on a river bank and kayaking/hiking durning the day it’s a great way to unwind
Fear_Loathing1966@reddit
When I was a kid it was fun. All the hard work was done for me though. When I was a young man it was fun to drink beers and eat big steaks with the guys while camping. I no longer enjoy camping. It’s dirty, too hot, too cold, I much prefer a big city now.
admseven@reddit
Hate it.
NormalDudeNotWeirdo@reddit
Nope I hate it.
ive_got_a_headache@reddit
Yes! It’s my favorite, I wish I could do it all the time!!!
1PumpkinKiing@reddit
Dude, yes.
I do my best to spend at least ¼ - ⅓ of the year camping.
I love long camping, hunting, and fishing trips. Like I'm getting ready to go on a 3 month camping roadtrip. Also, about 3 years ago I spent a month hammock camping around Hawaii. No overpriced hotels or air bnbs, just me, my hammock, and my fishing and filming gear
WasabiHobbit@reddit
No. I pay really good money for a bed, running water, electricity, and home appliances. I don't see the appeal of packing up and roughing it in nature for fun.
The same goes for hotels or air bnb's-- I prefer my home. It's my safe space.
InevitableRhubarb232@reddit
Yes
Rubberbandballgirl@reddit
He’ll no
JonasSkywalker@reddit
No. It’s nice to be in nature and take it all in, but trying to sleep and eat there, no.
aenea22980@reddit
AbsoFuckingLutely NOT. Camping is horrible.
rebeccalul@reddit
I am currently camping at a music festival! I camped three times before this week to test my gear and really perfect the set up and tear down. I’ve come to like camping. I love to unplug. I came to Reddit to check the festival subreddit and after this the phone is going back into the duffel bag.
Beginning_Cap_8614@reddit
The real question is: did anyone else "camp" (set up tents in the backyard) when they were a kid, or was that just me?
kaatie80@reddit
I love being out in nature. I love the crisp, fresh air. Set me up near swimmable water and I'm in absolute heaven 💚
But I can't do the sleeping on the hard ground thing. It hurt when I was a teenager, and I'm far from my teen years these days. And air mattresses aren't much better.
whodidthat1878@reddit
Never have been and never had the urge to go either.
No-Function223@reddit
Yes and no. I like camping at a campground, I’m not about to out alone in the middle of nowhere. Lol I do not have the survival instincts necessary for that.
morchard1493@reddit
Yeah. Haven't done it in about 20 years, though. Haven't had the opportunity to go again.
bigtcm@reddit
Hate it.
I'm a really light sleeper, even in my own bed at home, so I end up barely sleeping at all when I'm in a sleeping bag in a tent.
I hate how you spend like a week preparing to camp, even if camping is just for two days.
Furthermore i love a daily shower. I love eating hot, well prepared balanced meals.
I pretty much hate camping.
rededelk@reddit
Yah
ssgtdunno@reddit
The Marine Corps ruined camping for me. I’m never sleeping outside on purpose again.
CantHostCantTravel@reddit
The only aspect of camping that I dislike is the actual sleeping part.
My anxiety doesn’t allow me sleep in vulnerable situations, whether it be sitting upright on a plane surrounded by hundreds of other people, or in a flimsy plastic tent that allows me to hear every little (and big) creature scurrying and slithering and scampering around the camp at night.
I have way too much anxiety about unwanted visitors in the night.
Skottyj1649@reddit
If by camping you mean renting a fully equipped cabin near some trees, yes!
gard3nwitch@reddit
It's one of those things that sounds nice and charming, until there's bugs everywhere and rain gets in your tent and a bear steals your food
Icy-Whale-2253@reddit
I hate getting chomped down by mosquitoes and I’m petrified of spiders so I’m gonna have to say… no.
Justdonedil@reddit
When I was young? Yes. Now? Too much work to sit in the dirt.
vu_sua@reddit
No
Weightmonster@reddit
In a cabin with comfortable beds, climate control and electricity, sure.
witchitieto@reddit
“It’s like being homeless without the change”
agravain@reddit
I did when I was young and a boy scout. We did frequently. now as an adult and living in Florida where the mosquitoes will carry away small children, not anymore
Ok_Depth_6476@reddit
I cannot imagine camping in FL. I spent about 9 years in the Miami area and I learned quickly not to stand too long in the grass, or you'll get eaten by fire ants. Not a chance I would sleep outside there.
Twirlmom9504_@reddit
Don’t some people camp to go to Disney and save money? camping in Orlando sounds like a circle of Hell to me.
TSells31@reddit
I’m not saying camping in tents doesn’t happen there, but 98% of people who say they’re camping at Disney probably mean staying in the campground, in a camper.
Ok_Depth_6476@reddit
I think I've heard of such a thing, but that wouldn't be me. I'm the one that stays at a Days Inn outside Disney. Some would consider that camping. 😄
DargyBear@reddit
Just now entering the time of year I can camp outside in north Florida without heat or bugs.

I have never been camping and have no desire to ever go camping. I'm an indoorsy person, but I support other people's love for the outdoors and I'm glad that we have national parks and whatnot for people to enjoy.
AdhesiveSeaMonkey@reddit
I love it. Though I don’t get out very often these days. Back in the day, though, I’d head up into the mountains for days at a time.
flugualbinder@reddit
Yes. Went three times this year so far. Going again in November. It’s been awhile since I’ve been winter camping so I’m excited!
Araxanna@reddit
I’ve never been.
xX_Dres_Aftermath_Xx@reddit
Absolutely
llama__pajamas@reddit
I used to camp. I even lived in a national park as staff. But when I bought a house, I just wanted to be in my house. I really love it. It’s completely mine and such a peaceful oasis. I think I’d like to go camping with my kids so they can see the stars. But to be honest, we will probably get a drive-up glamping cabin with a fire pit. That’s near a bunch a restaurants and preferably on a lake / near a pool. Maybe lay out sleeping bags to make s’mores and look at stars, but sleep in beds with sheets.
dobster1029@reddit
Every chance I get. Went camping last weekend, was there 24 hours, paddled 4 times, drank whiskey under the stars. Had a fire. Cooked on the fire. Slept soundly in my tent. Woke to birds. Napped in the hammock after my morning paddle. Drove home, showered, slept, went to work.
Hello_Hangnail@reddit
Yes but the absolutely stupid amount of people that go missing in national parks kind of warns me off as of late. Especially now that Trump fired all the park rangers.
drnewcomb@reddit
“Camping” covers many things, from living in a >$100K motorized house on wheels to heading off into the wilderness carrying everything on your back. I used to do a lot of the 2nd type but not so much any more since I’ve aged a bit. I now enjoy hiking to rustic lodges where I can get a hot meal and a warm bunk, and not have to carry all my food, bedding, water, etc. It’s sort of a cheat but I don’t care.
CVieira12@reddit
Absolutely.
HardFoughtLife@reddit
I love camping. Don't have anyone to go with anymore so haven't been in years.
sharpshooter999@reddit
Gimme a bighorn sheep tag a month off of work and I'll show you how much I like sleeping in a tent
Ducal_Spellmonger@reddit
Same. Unfortunately, being a non-resident in my 30s, I'm essentially mathematically aged out of ever drawing a tag.
eyetracker@reddit
Ha, it's similar for residents
sharpshooter999@reddit
You and me both. My best chance is the bighorn sheep draw we have here in Nebraska. I actually found one of the herds out in panhandle one time when I was antelope hunting
Ducal_Spellmonger@reddit
I really need to start applying for anything and everything out west. I'm in Michigan, and the only big game we have is whitetail, elk, and bear. I don't have much interest in bear, and the odds of drawing an elk tag are incredibly low. But at least I can take 10 deer/ year.

big_bob_c@reddit
I love camping, especially the kind where you sleep on a bed in a hotel room and eat in a restaurant....
However, my son is in Scouts, so we mostly do the kind where you set up a tent and hope it doesn't leak too much. My family used to camp a lot as a kid, it's a lot cheaper than hotels when you have many children.
SnowblindAlbino@reddit
I went last weekend with a group of 40 people! Great fun, about half kids/half adults. There are so many parks and camping areas in the US you could spend your life exploring them and never run out of options. Though now pushing 60 I'm more often inclined to take a BIG tent and cots, I've done plenty in a bivy over the years as well.
AccountantRadiant351@reddit
No. I overdosed as a kid. We were poor and any time we got a vacation the only choices were going to a relative's house or camping.
I do enjoy hanging out at a campsite singing. I don't mind camp cooking. But I have enough money to sleep in a good hotel or a home rental with nice comfy beds and by gosh I'm using it. My back will not tolerate sleeping on the ground.
It has put a cramp in my style when it comes to attending festivals, though. We may manage an RV at some point as a compromise.
LetsGoGators23@reddit
No. I would camp if invited, but I married the most indoors of men. He doesn’t even like boats! And we live in Florida! When our friends invite us out on their boat me and the kids go because husband just doesn’t want to.
But liking camping would always be a stretch even for me who is fairly happy in most environments that fall under the vacation category.
And yes, we’re white. It seems like camping is a white American thing associated with lack of fear of nature so I want to be specific. Also, I respect but don’t fear nature.
BookLuvr7@reddit
Usually, yes, but it can really depend on who you go with.
I once went with someone who had undiagnosed sleep apnea, but who snored. She knew she snored. She should've warned the rest of us. NOBODY but her got ANY sleep. It was terrible. Some people even tried going to sleep in the car just to drown her out. I finally put in headphones and blasted soothing sounds.
She was eventually (after lots of stubborn resistance) diagnosed with sleep apnea and now uses a CPAP.

I like what I call "in between camping". For some people, camping means driving a small mobile house somewhere and living in for a while. For others, camping means cramming as much as you need to survive into a backpack and living for a while.
I like driving out to the state park where I can pitch a tent to sleep in, build a fire to cook on, and walk up the hill to take a shower if I want to. I like having trees if I need a #1 and flush toilets if I need a #2.

My state of Minnesota has millions of acres of public land open to camping, hiking, and canoeing. When I was younger I took my children and later grandchildren canoeing into the back country. During many trips we travled 50 miles. At 70 I have health issues and now it is car camping, using motorboats, or staying at a cabin on a lake.
winteriscoming9099@reddit
Absolutely love it. Started doing it back in my Boy Scout days and I continue camping (and hiking) now. I do prefer not having to backpack and carry my stuff everywhere, though. I’m also careful where I hike. If a place is a mosquito haven then I avoid it like the plague
Lovemybee@reddit
Yes, I (64f) love camping and have all my life!!!
I spent the first 11 years of my life in Chicagoland, and there are lots of forest preserves there, where camping is free, easily accessible, and abundant. I camped with my family and was a Girl Scout, so I camped a lot with my scout troup, too.
Then, when I was 12, my family moved to Arizona. There are faaaaar more acres of rural land in Arizona than there are acres of urban and suburban land combined, so we camped a lot here, too. As I grew up and had my own kids, they were Scouts and camped a lot with their troups, as well. We also camped a lot as a family.
There is so much beautiful land in the US and Arizona, in particular! I can camp by a mountain lake, a meadow lake, a canyon lake, and a desert reservoir, to name a few. I can camp by the Grand Canyon and around other, lesser known canyons and mountainsides within a day's drive from my home in Phoenix.
Arizona has the most hummingbird species in the United States! Arizona has the largest contiguous Ponderosa pine forest in the world!
Sure, it gets hot in the desert in the summer, but you don't have to shovel sunshine!!!
Can you tell I love my adopted home state? Lol
Dpg2304@reddit
For sure. Don't do it as much as I used to, but there are so many great places in the US to camp.

I prefer a cabin in a state park or something. Maybe an RV if I had one. I want a real, clean bathroom! I don’t mind sleeping in a tent, but buildings are more comfortable and feel like a more secure place to leave my stuff (yes I know I’m paranoid, lol).

No. Cold, damp, humid, bugs, bears. I have trouble sleeping even in a nice bed so trying to sleep on the ground, in a tent or inside a tin can is impossible for me.

Yes, but I never go. I’m just too lazy to gather the things, find a spot, and actually get there. But I do enjoy it when I’m there.
Loud-Fox-8018@reddit
I used to like camping when I was younger. But now, official campgrounds always seem too crowded, and as a tent camper, RVs tend to be too noisy due to generators and similar (don’t get me started on RVs with giant TVs). I’d rather rent a comfortable place to stay with a private bathroom, and go hiking in the day and then chill on my own patio at night.

I grew up playing in the woods and enjoyed camping activities. Then I joined the Army and after 9 years (all in line units except for going to schools) I am thoroughly camped out. When I lived in a state where the weather was nicer (less humid), I'd occasionally go. I'm not really an outdoors-y type - more like the you catch the fish and bring it back to the cabin where I'll clean and cook it type - but I did enjoy getting away from the hustle and bustle and other people sometimes.
It's definitely not something I'd consider a hobby or anything.

Grew up camping. First trip I remember was at five years old. We’d rent a camp site for a week or so, drag the pop-up camper and stay over Independence Day. Great place to celebrate. Did that annually until I moved out and left the state. Now that I’m old(er), I drag the tent deep into the forest, find a water source and flat ground and set up a very modest “base” where I plan fishing, foraging and unwind by the camp fire each night. No phones (turned off and kept in the vehicle), no electricity and no people. Paradise.

Drinking beer, playing guitar in front of a camp fire, and then crawling into a warm sleeping bag while it's freezing outside. Awesome. I sleep like shit though, I'm always miserable the next day and packing up sucks. But yeah. Love it.

I went twice with my eighth grade earth science class, and it was fun since we were all together and got to do fun stuff. But I think I would hate it as an adult. I do like the beauty of the outdoors, but the most I want to do is maybe a hike or a swim. Sleeping on the ground, getting bitten by insects, and no air conditioning just aren’t appealing to me. Campfires are fun but I don’t need to sleep in a tent to do that.

I prefer what's called 'glamping'-my folks own an RV and I prefer it to tents. It's the best time you'll ever have while being somewhat uncomfortable. And I don't care how simple the food is, it'll be the best food you've ever eaten. Especially breakfast. There's nothing like a cold, autumn morning— unzipping your tent, and someone has already made coffee. Oh man, I miss it.
My husband, however, is not a fan.

I loved the shit out of it as a kid and through most of my 20s. I used to camp all the time, and it was my favorite type of trip. As I got older, I got more and more annoyed with fiddling with a tent, and my back became less and less okay with sleeping on the ground.
Now, it's been a few years since the last time I went camping, and I have zero urge to do it again. I sometimes do bikepacking trips where you effectively do a road trip on a bike and have to pack everything you need into saddlebags. A lot of people like to do this by packing a light tent and camping as they go, but I've always done "credit card camping" where the trip is planned as routes between various hotels and B&Bs.

Buckabuckaw@reddit
I used to, 40 years ago. Did a lot of backpacking into pretty deep wilderness, staying out there for 2 or 3 weeks. Loved it. Now my knees can't handle it any more. But one of my favorite ways to get to sleep is to imagine myself back in a sleeping bag looking up at the Milky Way, or in a tent with rain falling, or just hearing the night creatures.
papisilla@reddit
I enjoy going on a nice hike or doing some off-roading or shooting and then getting shit faced around a campfire far enough in the middle of nowhere that I can see all the stars in the sky. "Camping" itself sucks everything about it is a pain in the ass but you kinda put up with it because you like to do other things that would really also be a pain in the ass if you didn't have somewhere to sleep

I like staying in hotel rooms personally. I’ve camped before. It’s just not my thing.

DOMSdeluise@reddit
it's not a hobby I enjoy personally but I think it's a fine activity and I'm glad that many people like it and have abundant options
Figgler@reddit
I didn’t like it much until I moved out of Texas and to the mountains. It’s too hot and humid to enjoy camping in Texas.
DOMSdeluise@reddit
I'm just not very outdoorsy. I have lived in Houston (and in the urban core at that) for most of my life. I don't mind being out in the heat - I walked three or four miles today on various errands and trips - but I like having the amenities around. I don't even mind hiking and have gone on various rock climbing expeditions around the state, even in the summer. But at the end of the day I like having a bed to sleep in lol. but also I know a lot of people like nature and being out in the elements so this is simply an expression of my own preferences.
kavk27@reddit
I enjoy hiking in nature and visiting people while they're camping. But I don't like to sleep outside overnight because I'm worried I'll be attacked by a dangerous wild animal.

Nope. I can appreciate nature, i just don't want to live in it.
TheCarzilla@reddit
When I was in high school I used to camp all the time with my friends!!! Our parents thought we were having wholesome fun. Now that I’m old(er) I feel like I need a bed and AC during the summer. But, I’d like to take my kids camping at some point. They’ve slept out in the tent in our yard one night the past few summers. I even bought a large tent a few months ago with the hope that we’ll go ( but I’d still prefer a sink/toilet/cozy bed)!!!
tenehemia@reddit
When I was growing up my family would go camping half a dozen times a year, plus there was events with the scout troop and maybe a shared camping trip with our neighbors who were good friends of the family. Plus when I was maybe 15-16 i worked summers at a YMCA day camp. Loved all of it. Except for hiking. I always disliked hiking and still do. When I was in the scouts we always had long hikes planned and I figured our the best way to get out of them, which was that I decided to work on my cooking merit badge so I always had to stay back at camp using the time to work on dinner. 30 years later I'm a chef, so that worked out quite well.

I'm on team backpacking. Watch the sun go down from a mountaintop, get a little fire going, sip some bourbon while hanging with family or friends. Absolutely gorgeous places you can't get to in a car, and you get to live in them for a little moment.
Car camping is more of a means to an end. It's a place to stay when you're doing other outdoors things. Weekend of fly fishing? A campsite right on the river is perfect. But if the camping part is the main attraction, I want a view that does not include cars.
casey5656@reddit
I’m not sure if what we do as actually camping as we have an RV-my spouse’s dream. I don’t really get packing up a ton of stuff from our house to turn around and put it in the house on wheels. Then end up in basically a parking lot with some grass, trees and other RV’s. Do I like it? Not very much.
SoCalDama@reddit
Love it. Went tent camping in my younger years, and when my own kids were growing. I am in my mid-60’s and planning on going again next year.
jackfaire@reddit
I did when I was a kid. However I don't see any draw to it as an adult. I'd rather spend the weekend in my reading chair with a burrito bar on my dresser and a really good book.
Mrlin705@reddit
I love camping. But camping is a lot of work on either end. There is a lot of planning, prep, usually at least a couple hours of travel. Then you get to pack all of your, now dirty, shit back up, travel more, unpack all of it, clean it, and put it away.
Juice just ain't worth the squeeze unless I don't have to be responsible for all that other shit.
ILieSometimes03@reddit
Absolutely from “camping” in a trailer. To solo backpacking and roughing it in the mountains.

Nope. My grandpa didn’t have plumbing or electricity for the first 15 years of his life and never understood camping. He never took his kids and my dad never took me. I’ve never understood spending time and money to stay outside without power, AC, heating, plumbing, etc. Not for me
Seattleman1955@reddit
It's a lot more fun if you have other reasons for doing it. If you are going to summit a mountain peak then you might have tent pitched down lower to make it a two day climb.
If, in my case, you go somewhere with friends to scuba dive, and you can also camp out, that's fun as well.
If you are young, money is tight, and you want to drive around to explore a new state, then it can be convenient to just pitch a tent at a campsite as night approaches.
Just driving somewhere so you can sleep on the ground for no other reason, it's not as much fun.
Bright_Ices@reddit
Love camping! Grew up camping with my family and always loved it. Mountain woods are my happy place, though I’ve camped many places.
cajun-cottonmouth@reddit
I love camping. Built a log cabin last time I went. Had a creek with good water, good soil, little bit of perfect. Can’t wait to find another section of perfect again.
It was 10-15yr old pine saplings, older dead pine tree bark, and clay mud/sticks/leaves. Took two weeks. Was solid for a year, minus the mud falling. Like 75 sq ft lol

I don't enjoy camping myself, but I'm in a wheelchair, so that is undoubtedly a big reason. I am far, far too fond of flat surfaces to push my chair on.

I really like camping. I grew up in Brooklyn, so I never camped. My husband was from Colorado, so he took me camping when we moved there, and I really love it. We grab the dogs, set up our tent, and start a campfire. I have a hammock I string up between two trees, and I read in it and fall asleep. We hike during the day and read outside. It is one of my favorite parts of summer. It's so quiet and comfortable and I don't have my computer and my phone doesn't work and it it awesome for a few days.
Self-Comprehensive@reddit
Yes I do. I have a farm and I can camp comfortably and privately. In the spring and fall I sometimes spend more nights outside than inside. But my campsite is almost as as comfortable as a house at this point, I've been doing it so long. I also have people over for bonfires and campfire cookouts.
AffectionateSoup6965@reddit

I was a Girl Scout for 11 years, and we camped at least once a year as a group. I also camped a lot with my family, and I've been camping several times with my husband. I prefer primitive-adjacent camping where there's an air mattress and a cooler, but no electricity and I might also have to either trek for plumbing and a restroom or make do with what I can bring to the site.
I love being out in the middle of the woods with as few people as possible around, seeing three times the amount of stars I see at home, and listening to all of the animals in the middle of the night. I love cooking over an open fire, setting up and taking down my shelter, hiking and exploring all day, and I even love how smoky my clothes smell when I get home.
The only unpleasant part of camping is that here in FL, nighttime temps can linger in the 80's F (~29.4°C) in the summer, which combined with the humidity makes it hard for me to sleep. But that's easily mitigated by going camping mostly in cooler weather lol

Yep, I typically go camping about once a month when it isn't freezing cold (and I live in the Southwest so I get to go most of the year).

Nancy6651@reddit
When we were growing up, my parents embraced camping, first in a giant tent, later a popup camper. The last time I went with them was 40+ years ago when my husband and I were first married. After that, we were done.
My brothers now have big-ass park trailers anchored in a nice camp area with a marina. One brother has a boat, jet ski, etc. Before we moved away (from our hometown Chicago to Phoenix), we'd go down every Labor Day, and it was pretty idyllic.
The reason it was idyllic is that my brother and his wife are great hosts and went all out to give us a good time. Even if I wanted to spend all the money to duplicate my brother's experience, it's a tremendous amount of work maintaining and storing everything. Also, cooking isn't high on my list of things to do while on vacation, and they cooked most of our meals.
While we appreciate "glamping," my husband and I aren't up to it.

Yessssss....and no. I used to really love it, but now that I'm the person who has to clean and put everything away, i struggle to find it fun. Raibean@reddit
I fucking love camping and aim to go at least once a year. That doesn’t always happen though
Snoo_16677@reddit
No, but my wife and I sometimes stay in our friends' camper at a specialty campground. There's a sign on the wall inside the camper that says, "Camping: Spending a small fortune to live like a homeless person."
If we weren't so interested in this campground, we'd never camp.
Our friends are really into it. I think it's entirely too much work to attach the camper to and detach it from the truck (I drive a small economy car). It would be a pain to connect and disconnect the water and sewer lines and pop out and retract the pop-out parts of the camper. It's expensive to maintain and store a camper. We're much less interested in staying in a tent. If we had to do it ourselves, we wouldn't.
Ok_Depth_6476@reddit
Nope, not even a little. I went camping in Girl Scouts a couple of times, plus there was an excruciating week of sleep away camp. I like to sleep and shower indoors, preferably with central air and heating.

I live on the edge of wilderness so it's not difficult to toss a tent in my car and get out there.
