What is your favorite/most popular Balkan food?

It is my turn to make dinner this week, what should I make? I’ve already made burek and sataraš. I can see why everyone likes burek, that shit is so good, but I want to make something I haven’t made yet. Thank you!

Pjeskavica, chevapi, karadjodjeva schnitzel, pasljue. Pardon my horrible spelling.
ChoicePhilosopher430@reddit
Karadjodjeva is really really good. If you like it, you can also try a Spanish dish from the Asturia region called cachopo, especially that it's the season of roasted bell peppers.

Karadjordjeva is owesome but where is he going to find young kajmak? To make it worse kajmak i tasted in Greece and Turkey tastes nothing like what we have in EX Yugoslavia.
ChoicePhilosopher430@reddit
I agree. It's hard to find kaymak, even more difficult to find a good one. I usually use local sweet cheese, it's similar, but not the same of course.

Don’t worry, I have horrible spelling too.

to me that looks like polpete, but polpete is usually meat mixed with rice, you can put and some kind of vegetable, can be zucchini, leek... etc

Ooh that looks good! Do you have a specific way of making or is everything online more or less the same? I actually just got some fresh zucchini today at the market!

I'm glad you like it, and yes, it tastes really good! Pretty much this is a classic recipe, but we fry in olive oil. Good appetite!

Go simple.
Chicken, potato halves and onion halves in pig fat in oven. Melt fat but only make it hot enough to be semi-liquid. You should be able to keep finger in it. Pour it in deeper metal pan. Cover chicken and potatoes in whatever spices you prefer put it in pan with onion, cover with aluminum foil and slow cook it in oven. Then when it's done blast it with heat for few minutes just to get some crust.
Serve it with shopska salad, baked peppers (not bell peppers, red narrower cone like ones) peeled and preserved in oil with garlic, and hot home made bread.
But if you are not afraid of more complexity but still dead easy go with stuffed bell peppers which is served, again with salad, sour milk and bread or sarma which is same stuffing but rolled into sour cabbage or vine leaves.
Also since it's from balkan go with something like cream veal soup or just simple chicken soup with vegetables (carrots, parsnip, celery) with semolina dumplings for the first meal.
And then there is an simple option of balkan grill. Pljeskavica (basically a bit different burger), especially ones with bacon, aged cheese and ham mixed in, ćevapi, grilled smoked pork ribs...

Oooh that all sounds really good! What is the chicken recipe called, I would like to look for a more specific recipe online. Also, would chicken breast work, or do I need a whole chicken?
mamlazmamlazic@reddit
I don't know. It's just how my family and people around us prepared chicken for as long as I remember.
Hazards-of-Love@reddit (OP)
That’s fair! The recipe sounded familiar, I think my grandmother has her mother’s recipes somewhere she just doesn’t really use phone, so I asked here instead.
