Why didn't anyone tell us how our heels were going to turn into cracked desert after 50?

I had literally no idea this was coming.
blblue1678@reddit
Aquafor and a pair of socks.
Ok-Writing9280@reddit
Urea cream applied before bedtime with a pair of socks on top will sort it out quickly.
I scrub my feet in the shower and have never had this issue.
NorseGlas@reddit
Walk barefoot in wet sand as often as possible.
Doesn’t matter if it’s the ocean, bay, lake, or a small stream.
The sand is way better than any pumice stone at removing dry skin.
theworldizyourclam@reddit
Drywall sanding blocks are the key! They work amazingly well.
NorseGlas@reddit
🤣 I have used a dremel with a sanding wheel on a bad callus before.
But fishing barefoot when it’s warm enough does the trick for me.
Grace_Alcock@reddit
Or wear socks and shoes for most of your long-distance walking. In the past couple of years, I’ve been wearing running shoes more, even in summer because I walk several miles in the morning. I switch to flip flops at home. No more heel cracking.
qpv@reddit
Or absolutely avoiding being barefoot as much as possible. Thats my routine, I have the feet of a 12 year old skin wise.

I can tell you’re over 50 because you’re quoting the f-ing Marx Brothers.
PrettyGreatOldOne@reddit
I also within the last hour lotioned my dry cracked feet. Seriously.
Strict_Weather9063@reddit
Go get a pedicure once a month. They will slowly take care of the calluses on your heels. Get them a nice soak and your nails done a massage lotion and your feet scrubbed.
Las_Vegan@reddit
I sent my 50+ year old husband to the nail salon for a simple pedicure. I booked the no-frills one that would cut his toenails and soften his heels. He came home with nice looking feet but paid 2x the amount I had authorized on the salon app.
If people are new to nail salons, watch out for the add-ons. They ask nicely if you want this or that but they often don’t tell they are NOT included or how much those extras are until you get sticker shock at the register. Buyer beware. Finding a salon you like and trust is the best.
PrettyGreatOldOne@reddit
THX. Way ahead of ya. Last year or so, every 7 weeks with my haircut.
Strict_Weather9063@reddit
Once month me and dad go get ours done. Yes I’m a guy that takes care of his dad.
LangdonAlg3r@reddit
Don’t know why you need to qualify that you take care of your dad. No shame there. My dad lives with us.
Strict_Weather9063@reddit
It is type two, foot care is important. Rest of the time it is cooking cleaning and making sure he takes his meds on time.
LangdonAlg3r@reddit
My dad is still super independent and thankfully is mentally sharper than I am still. He was just living alone in the middle of nowhere and was starting to have mobility issues. He had colon cancer surgery last year and was a ton of no fun during his recovery when he actually needed help with everything—I dread when his health gets worse than it is now. He does a lot of the cooking (not that I eat much of it). He loves cooking. I hate it.
LangdonAlg3r@reddit
I’m not 50 yet and didn’t have this problem until we moved to a drier climate. I’m working up the nerve to go get a pedicure where my wife goes when winter comes back in full force. It’s been fine again this summer, but winter is coming. My almost 80 year old father gets pedicures there now because he can’t bend down to his feet enough to cut his own toenails anymore…something for us all to look forward to as next steps after the dry heels.
No-Diet-4797@reddit
There was an older gentleman, I'd say mid 70s, that would come in weekly to the salon I went to to get pedicures because he liked the foot and calf massage. I lot of guys would laugh at there for being "girlie" but its smart. Its not as much fun to cut your own toenails and lotion your own feet. Not like you have to paint your toenails. Although, this was CA so if he did nobody would've batted an eye.
Fast_Cod1883@reddit
It's actually really smart. Many older adults have issues with their feet because less care. Especially people with neuropathy. It's dangerous not to care for your feet then.
effie-sue@reddit
My parents are pushing 90. They have regular appointments with the podiatrist for medical pedicures.
No-Diet-4797@reddit
Absolutely. I used to try to take my mom but she was embarrassed by her feet. To be fair, they were a size 11.5 narrow and really dry. She had neuropathy from previous cancer treatments. She'd let me work on her feet but not strangers. I told her "this is why we go! To take care of our feet, silly woman". She never did go with me.
Fast_Cod1883@reddit
It can be difficult with the stubborn ones.
xiewadu@reddit
And eyesight goes so it's more challenging, even if you can do the bending.
No-Diet-4797@reddit
As I'm currently finding out, yeah, that too
peteofaustralia@reddit
Buy a curved foot file from places like Kmart or Chemist Warehouse. Towards the end of every shower, just do ten seconds on each foot. (The inner curve is the rough file, then you flip it and use the finer sandpaper to make it smooth.) Then rinse.
Trust me, that shit will change the game completely.
Special-Longjumping@reddit
Not sure if it's for everyone on Medicare but my 80 year old dad gets a free pedicure once at month from his podiatrist.
LangdonAlg3r@reddit
He can afford to get one at the place in town. He has enough money to get by and he still insists on buying the cheapest of everything and he doesn’t pay rent or mortgage or utilities. Expiration dates on food are a vague suggestion that one should consider maybe listening to after about a year has passed. I think to some extent some of my behavior is a reaction to his frugality.
Rishtu@reddit
I live in Vegas. Still smooth as a baby’s butt.
LangdonAlg3r@reddit
Stop putting your feet on baby butts. We believe you already.
PrettyGreatOldOne@reddit
I pull my back trying to cut my toenails. That's when I scheduled my first pedicure. Totally worth it.

My husband found this device we call the cheese grater. It descales your feet better than a pumice stone. Not sure what you call it but you can find it in the footcare aisle. Cetafil lotion slathered on after will soften them up.

Longster_dude@reddit
I have something like a cheese grater. It’s egg shaped and it might even be called The Egg or something. But yeah, grate that heel, smooth it out with pumice, then slather on some thick cream (I use CeraVe), then put on some socks and sleep.
honeypot17@reddit
Pedi Egg!

My wife moisturizes daily. I have never moisturized in my life.
Her heels are cracked and dry. Mine are as soft as a baby's bottom.
Not sure the moisturizing is as important as people seem to think.

Fast_Cod1883@reddit
Do you wear boots or shoes that keep moisture in? Does she wear sandals or flats a lot? That can really affect it.
HistorianJRM85@reddit
this isn't scientific at all, but i noticed my heels drying up and cracking when i was wearing slippers and sandals at home all the time. Then I went back to walking barefoot and my heels are back to normal.
But it's possible that i'm not that 'old'. i'm 46.
flat5@reddit
I have no idea if this has anything to do with it, but I wear socks unless I'm sleeping or unless I'm leaving the house. I never wear sandals or slippers, save for rare occasions.
Maybe it's mostly genetics?
peteofaustralia@reddit
Curved foot file, compadre! Ten seconds per foot at the end of every shower. My gods, my heels are awesome now and it took so little effort. Just a little cocoa butter moisturiser on the heels each night too. So easy.

It's nice to have it as an established habit. But I promise that if she stopped doing it and then walked around in flip flops or sandals for a week, she'd look like she'd never even tried.
scarybottom@reddit
IDK about that bad- I am inconsistent, an olive in Birkenstocks. I take care of mine- but not daily, and they are not cracked/damaged. I also hike and walk 60-80,000 steps a week. You do need to take care of them- but once they are healthy every few days is fine ;)

I put so many different lotions on different parts when I get out of the shower. Eye lotion, then spf face, then another lotion over that. Lotion on my neck and upper chest. Legs. Feet. Arms. Knees/elbows. I think it takes longer to lotion up than to shower.
And before bed routine is wash, more eye/night lotion on my face, neck/upper chest, arms again.

Keeps pumice stone in the shower and scrub weekly. Moisturize with O’Keefe’s, Amlactin, or Nivea’s In-shower lotion. You can get great cheap glycolic acid foot peels from places like Target— seem like they did nothing for a few days, then wowza, break out the cheese grater.
Helpful-Bag722@reddit
Urea cream! At least 25%, you can get it at any store in the foot care dept or diabetic area. You can get 40% online but 25% has worked great for me. I use it almost every night, after a good scrub with a pumice sponge (not a stone) every time I take a shower. I also use Baby Feet but only during sock season. It is a disposable bootie filled with something that makes your skin peel off. It's an extremely satisfying process but also unsightly. If you liked to put Elmer's glue on your hands and peel it off after it dried when you were a kid you'll love the booties.
OtterMumzy@reddit
Remember all the shows we watched (Brady bunch for example) and the wife/mom always used hand lotion before going to sleep? Now I get it.

Its something you need to stay on top of.
1-2xs a week I fill up a small basin with VERY hot water and usually some Epson salt and some liquid soap (shower gel, hand soap, etc). I'll soak until the water is warm.
I then scrub the crap out of the entire bottoms with a black pumice stone. You need one with the larger holes. The grey/white stones are junk. Dip again to rinse. Wipe dry with a bath towel, the slather up with a quality lotion. Vaseline makes some good ones.
MrsNuggs@reddit
Every night before falling asleep rub some aquaphor into your feet, hands, and elbows. You will not regret it.

Emu oil and a pair of those 1/4 socks with no toes at night will fix you right up. I like the "Blue Goo" brand, which is like $4 a can for the emu oil stuff and the ZenToes socks, which have a sort of rubber barrier in the heel so the moisturizer doesn't leak through.

If you want to treat your heels at home, once a week apply glycolic acid to your entire foot and let it sit for at least 5 minutes. Then apply urea cream, let that soak in and slug your feet with CeraVe healing ointment. The healing ointment is similar to aquaphor. Put a pair of socks on for a few hours or overnight. Do this regularly and your heels will be soft and moisturized. This was a dermatologist's suggestion on TikTok and it works! I'm in a dry climate and either barefoot or in sandals all summer. My heels were gross until I started using this method.

PaleontologistEast76@reddit
I found the trick: exfoliation and moisturizer. Use a pumice stone or glass file (Walmart has a Dr Scholl's,glass foot file that is excellent) on the bottom and sides of your heels after 5-10 minutes in the shower (gotta soften the skin first). Rinse the file and heels thoroughly. After you dry off, put on your moisturizer and cover with socks.
The dead skin/callus gets dry and can lead to those awful cracks and fissures that are very uncomfortable. By removing the dead skin/callus you get the moisture directly into the skin layers that need to be moisturized.

The answer is Baby Foot peel. Just google it. One application (it takes a week of soaking to get the right outcome. Go by internet instructions, not what’s on the box) If you do it once every like 5 years you’re good.

Hello Cracked Foot Haver and Licensed Manicurist Here!
My mom's heels were always like that. I can still see her cracked heels with her Dr. Scholl's sandals slapping them!
It became an issue for me a long time ago due to pronation, which she had also. My heels just get more wear.
I am a SERIOUS exfoliator. I scrub with a stiff brush daily, use pumice stones, an electric callus remover, and occasionally a Credo blade. I would NOT suggest trying that at home. Doing it safely takes skill!
No cracks on my heels but keeping up with it is work. Most of the time a good scrubbing is fine but I occasionally have to put my feet in the Care Unit!
I have also used the Babyfoot Peel Foot Mask, which sounds gross and is gross. The kit comes with plastic booties you put on that have a gel inside. You keep them on for however long the box says. Over the next few days, basically the top layer of skin on your feet peels off, which is really disgusting, but it is effective. It's like getting new feet!
Ravenloff@reddit (OP)
I'm not as worried about cute feet as I am about, literally, wearing holes on my bed sheets. That was a huge wake up.
TheRabidBadger@reddit
I was sitting on the couch watching Netflix the other day. My big toe felt weird - kinda itchy, kinda stingy. I looked down and the dry cracked skin had cracked enough to where it was a big bleeding crevasse. So not cool.
Fordinghamster@reddit
I hide my credo blade usage from the family. There’s something weird about hard yellow shaved skin all over the bathroom floor! But it works and is very satisfying. I do bleed like a stuck pig if it slips.
Ksan_of_Tongass@reddit
Zoiks! WTF are you nasty people talking about?! My heels are as soft as a baby's bottom. I think a lot of you have other problems, with your heels being the least of them. Weight, diet, exercise, etc., probably play into a lot of what yall consider "old people problems".

bugabooandtwo@reddit
Same. I really don't understand how people can spend all their waking hours wearing socks and shoes. As soon as I get home from work, I'm barefoot until I have to leave the house. Never used any kind of lotions or creams on my feet and they're still soft as anything.

Your post made me remember something.. some 30 years ago, I was at a very posh mall, and I saw this woman, fried blond hair, dressed in all Louis Vuitton (very exclusive brand that had just arrived in my country)... You could tell her entire outfit was very expensive. I got in the escalator behind her and.. god... her feet. Her heels were grey and cracked and thick and crusty. I actually felt bad for her very expensive and beautiful shoes. Since then I made the habit of exfoliating and moisturize my feet periodically.

Then recently decided to try using rasp as final step in the shower. Immediate results. Was shocked, angry and embarrassed that I hadn't tried it sooner.

Certain tools work best on wet skin, and others on dry skin. Usually, the instructions will tell you which, but generally, just trying it out works.
buddhasma@reddit
If I don’t take care of my feet, I end up with cracks that bleed. Nu Skin Epoch Sole Solution has been the best product for me, but it’s not cheap anymore. Used to buy it for about $18 then suddenly the price skyrocketed & now it’s almost $40. But it works so I continue to give them my money. Everything else I’ve tried isn’t as good.

Truthfully, mine were pretty patched even before hitting the big 5-0. But it does reach new levels of dryness that you couldn't imagine. It's likely due to wearing more slides and other shoes that are easy to put on and take off.

I had dried heels. It was a symptom of high insulin levels aka pre diabetes. After being diagnosed with diabetic keto acidosis I had to change my diet to ketogenic therapy and fasting. Lost 30 kg and my feet are baby smooth.

My endocrinologist’s advice? Keep a food diary for a week. Calculate the number of carbs you eat on a daily basis. Every week afterwards drop your carb count by 50 grams. When you hit 20 grams daily stock that out for at least three months.
It’s ketogenic therapy. The 50 gram drop per week will help you avoid the keto flu. If you stick with it until you’re 20% body fat or less you’ll fix your insulin resistance and become insulin sensitive.
Ravenloff@reddit (OP)
I'll look into this, thank you.
SVTContour@reddit
No worries. Talk to your GP and ask for a fasting insulin test. If it’s in the double digits, you’re in trouble. It is reversible with ketogenic therapy. Good luck!

Soak in 50/50 warm water and vinegar. Then lightly LiGhTy exfoliate with a pumice stone or, I have a giant metal file that has two sides for sanding and smoothing. After thoroughly moisturize. Gold Bond has a great food lotion. If really bad, lanolin. Put on socks after. Do this a couple times a week.
I had a crack in my heel from neglecting them. It took years to work it out.
Note: I learned this method from a podiatrist. It’s part of self removing a planters wart instead of having a hole in my foot from carving it out. The involved the addition of salicylic acid and nightly soaks.
