Part 61 hasn’t given me any bookwork yet.. is this normal?

I’m currently working on my PPL and have 13 hours, and haven’t gotten any actual bookwork yet. I’ve been told to look at the traffic pattern and ATC comms, but no actual work. Is this normal? It just feels like I should be studying something other than just flying.

Yeah. Read the PHAK, the AFH, the FAR/AIM, the ACS, the aviation weather handbook.

ooou that’s a lot😭 where do I buy them?
TxAggieMike@reddit
You can download them all for free from FAA.gov.

I have good news for you, all of those books are free on the FAA website. Just start with the PHAK (Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge) and AFH (Airline Flying Handbook) for now.

Thank you!!

Unfortunately for people that are in or just coming out of high school, there are no homework assignments with due dates at a part 61 flight school. You are responsible for your learning.

Hmmmm kinda sorta…
I provide my clients with a syllabus and supporting material for ground as well as flight.
The syllabus lays out when to do things concurrently with flight and each lesson has what books to study, what videos to hatch, what learning objectives to master.

You’re a saint😭 Thank youuu

Sign yourself up for a private pilot ground school and start working towards your written exam.

Okay thanks! Just didn’t know if it was supposed to be like “assigned” or whatnot
BuzntFrog@reddit
Ask your CFI. If I were you I'd just take the initiative. Download a syllabus like gleim private pilot syllabus to see what the entire program usually entails. You can also download and read the FAA PHAK and AFH.

That’s all on you. You need to find a ground school. Either in person (less likely) or online/purchase (more likely). You will need to be proactive in learning the knowledge part.
If you need help getting started, by all means talk to your instructor and they should point you in the right direction.
The main thing to remember, though, is that you own your training. Don’t expect to be hand-held through it. Be an active participant in all of the training and learning.
Longjumping-Rice9783@reddit (OP)
Oh okay! Didn’t know if it was like “assigned” work after each lesson or whatnot
PilotC150@reddit
Some instructors may do that. Some won’t. Talk to your instructor about all of this. You’re literally paying them to answer questions and help you through this. We call them “flight” instructor but they’re there to answer all of your questions regarding the process of getting your certificate.

My school just told me to do a good online ground school. We went over a few things but they expected me to learn most of the ground stuff on my own. WAY cheaper than paying instructor rates too.
