What are you paying to rent a 172 at your flight school?

I’m working on my IR and feel like I’m getting hosed at $242 per hour, plus $77 for a CFII.
180HP, IFR Certified, Fuel injected, Garmin G3X 10” touch display, Garmin GNC 355 GPS, G5 standby, Garmin GFC500 Autopilot
I’m in Western, WA. What are you seeing for rates on IFR certified 172’s with glass?

Wild.

Where are you flying out of?!
NoRestfortheSith@reddit
I'm working on my VFR but the 172 I'm flying is IFR updated.
It is $165/hr - wet and $65/hr for my CFI.

Where are you flying out of in Western WA? I know KPLU prices are much better but CFI/CFII are the same price point. Go to Safety In Motion SIM Flight Center it’s where Spencer’s is.
Boring-Parsnip469@reddit (OP)
I’m training out of KPWT. I also own a Cherokee and my fly out of Apex 8w5. It unfortunately can’t use it for instrument training without some major panel upgrades.
DeVoniiX@reddit
I am flying your plane too. I picked up the membership with flying adventures and got to rent it for 180 then a month later, im back to paying 205 for it. Still better than paying 242 but I can't believe I got a subscription for the same rates from months ago. Cant wait to finish instrument so I can head out to an accelerated program.
Low-Exchange8071@reddit
Oh man that’s a bit of a flight. I think they’re charging that cause they know they got you. KTIW has cheaper prices too.
Is that restaurant still there? I used to love flying in for their enormous pancakes
Hazel-Beom@reddit
Hi what’s the flight school for KTIW called
Boring-Parsnip469@reddit (OP)
Pavco
Low-Exchange8071@reddit
There’s a couple that I remember. Rainier flight services and Pavco was the other one. But I haven’t been there in like 15 years
Boring-Parsnip469@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I’ve been looking at KTIW as an option. $175 for an IFR 172.
KPWT actually has a new restaurant within the past 1-2 years. Amelia’s Hangar. It’s definitely worth a visit!
Low-Exchange8071@reddit
I’ll have to go check it out.
Pepsidian@reddit
My flight school almost only uses g1000 C172s. They’re $220/hour wet and instructors are $90/hour. Flight school in the DMV is not cheap.

$245?! That might be the highest in this thread. Where you at?
Dry_Sky_8981@reddit
Our regular 172 is 207 but its ollddd the 182 with G1000 they fixed up pretty nicely
At a really small school though in Colorado

There seems to be lots of rates here below or around $200/hr + instructor. With that said, anyone paying upwards of $100k for all their ratings is getting hosed. Heck i've even seen some for $160k and they can't wait to do it while taking out a loan at double digit interest rates.

The school I'm looking at in North Texas is $167 for c152, $213 c172 (glass cockpit), and $177 for a Vashon Ranger (I believe they try to use this one for instrument training). These prices are including gas, the instructor fee is $70 an hr. You can also get $10 off each hour if you keep a minimum balance in your school's "debit" account.

bowleshiste@reddit
I primarily rent from two places: a small flight school and a large club, both at deltas in San Diego.
A 172 at the school is $90/hr, I think most CFIs are around $50. The planes are absolutely barebones. A lot of times there are minor issues with the radios which are basically all original except the one or two that were upgraded in the 80s. The planes are solid though. Two of the 172s are 145hp H models, two are 160hp M models. None of these planes are suitable for IFR though. They do have a 180hp Cherokee with a 430w that I think goes for $110/hr, but it's down for an overhaul atm.
Prices at the club vary a bit, but the nice 172s with G3Xs and full autopilot are around $160/hr. I think CFIs range from $75-$100.
Indigoflamingo_@reddit
Dang yall are making me feel greatful! $172 for rent and 55 for instruction. And they just raised these too Cherokee is 175, arrow is 211 in SC
I-r0ck@reddit
The flight school I went to charged $150 wet for carbureted 172’s with G5’s and GTN 650’s or $200 for fuel injected G1000’s. Flight instructors were $120 an hour though. This is in the Midwest.
bottomfeeder52@reddit
that’s cheaper than ksql or kpao in the bay area
Boring-Parsnip469@reddit (OP)
I’m curious what rates are?
This is just one flight school out of ksql but it’s $195 per hour. https://www.flybayarea.com/aircraft
didsomebodysaywander@reddit
KPAO, at one of the clubs. $200-240/hour wet for a 172S, 6 pack or G1000. Instructors are $100-150/hour.
bottomfeeder52@reddit
that school has a “fuel surcharge” that essentially makes it a dry rate. a current guy at my school knows an instructor who worked there and left. that rate is also with a membership…although idk how much it is. but to answer your question the other two big schools at ksql are around the same price or slightly cheaper. all instructors in the area are $100+
Boring-Parsnip469@reddit (OP)
Gotcha. So far this may be the only flight school with higher/comparable rates to the $319 per hour total I’m paying.
bottomfeeder52@reddit
no there’s tons of planes at the other schools there where you’re paying more for dual, simply because instructor fee is $100-$150. bit this is the bay area where a lot of the people flying are in a financial position to buy their own plane
DjangoTurbo@reddit
Too fucking much 172S G1000 $290 (6 planes total, 2 are pretty nice, 4 are clapped, 1 doesn’t have AP)
Decent 172SP dual G5/GTN750, shitty AP $209 (only 1 in the fleet, nearly always booked)
GrandJunctionMarmots@reddit
Damn.
$275/hr wet for a 2025 172 with all the glass bells and whistles. All the way down to $195 wet for an older 172. With several other planes of varying prices in between.
All with G1000.
Tennessee.

$175/hr wet for either: 172S, 180HP, Dual G5s. Garmin 530
172M, 180HP, Dual G3X, GTN650, autopilot
$60/hr CFI
OkSherbet8763@reddit
I think you're getting hosed. Where are you training at Rainier or Regal? Rainier is known for hosing students but Regals planes are just insanely overpriced. I trained in Western WA, 172 G5S with a 355 is $195, wet CFI is $55
dylanm312@reddit
$143 wet for steam gauges, $230 for glass. $65 for CFI.
Tbh I would strongly recommend doing most (or all) of your IR with steam gauges, you’ll save so much money. You could then switch to glass just for checkride prep, or just take your checkride on steam gauges.
Boring-Parsnip469@reddit (OP)
I’d happily do that if they offered an IFR plane with steam gauges. They have two other IFR planes for $211 per hour, but both are down for maintenance until the end of October…
dylanm312@reddit
I think maybe you should find a new (cheaper) school with planes that suit your preferences. It’s worth it in the long run imo.
sassinator13@reddit
We’re at 225 wet, 55 instruction. GTN 750, standard 6 pack in 3. Dual GI 275 in the fourth. All 2001 SPs, ADSB in/out. We are the most expensive the area by far.
I fly my club’s 1975 180 horse conversion. GTN 650, dual G5s, GTX 345 ADSB in/out, just replaced with a zero-time engine. 3k buy-in, 87/month, 50/hour dry. I pay our flight instructors the difference between our rack rate and what we pay them so we both win.

Middle of nowhere Midwest, $155/hr wet rate for a 6-pack ifr rated non-autopilot 1970’s 172 w/ 150hp.
Middle of nowhere Midwest, $155/hr wet rate for a dynon skyview HDX autopilot suite, from the mid 70’s, 150hp. We’re charging $65/hr for dual time (both the glass and 6-pack)
Also middle of nowhere Midwest, $200+/hr 2003 Skyhawk SP (180hp, fuel injected) w/ a barely functioning autopilot and a fancy Garmin GTN 750. Instruction is in the $60-range Just a few different scenarios for you to see. You’re getting robbed.

That’s a swanky 172 and it sounds like it comes with the price tag. The 172 at the school I flew at was $100 less per hour but it wasn’t as fancy. Cheap and fancy don’t really go together
MehCFI@reddit
Yep this right here. You absolutely do not need this crap in your plane for training, but price isn’t outrageous for airplane and area
Boring-Parsnip469@reddit (OP)
That’s fair. It’s a great plane, although honestly more than I need at this phase. I’d happily pay $40 less per hour to fly a plane without AP or a touch sensitive PFD.
BillySpacs@reddit

I’m $190/hr
172N’s, decently clean, 530/430W, steam (slowly going to convert to 275’s or G3x).
EFI at F70 is $195-$200hr for older 172’s with Glass and GFC500.
$242 is expensive, but here’s a rundown of my costs. Also keep in mind parts cost double what they did before COVID. Is what it is.
Estimates are 70/hr gas (estimate 10GPH average on the 320, lots of takeoffs with a rich mixture. 20/hr overhaul reserve 12/hr insurance 25/hr for 100/hr 3/hr parking 20/hr parts/unscheduled maintenance 10/hr financing
That’s $160/hr. One of my 172’s is a lease that I pay $57/hr dry on top of that.
