I might not even be a private pilot...Mistake in my Logbook
Posted by North-Comfort317@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 69 comments
Basically going back through my logbook as a CFI I found out that I don't satisfy the requirements to become a private pilot. I have 10.4 hours of solo before the check ride however only 4.7 of which were XC solo instead of the required 5. What do I ??
DrRob@reddit
Due to an administrative SNAFU, I never actually got my high school diploma certificate, but they let me into med school anyway.

You laugh but look up Dr Swango on Wikipedia. He served 6 months for a felony for poisoning his coworkers and got a medical license.
DrRob@reddit
It's ok. I'm pretty sure he got his high school diploma

This is a recurring nightmare I have.

Yeah I have to retake high school comp II to get my mattress degree back in that steam. I don't even remember the teachers name but it's definitely her.
Transplantdude@reddit
Oh crap! Does that mean all those surgeries didn't count?

Were you 141 or 61? 141 courses can have lower hour requirements.

I don’t understand how some of you can be such Boy Scouts to self snitch for such small things that can only negatively affect you when doing nothing at all is the clear and simple solution
Professional-War-253@reddit
Nah buddy the FSDO is setting up the firing squad as we speak , you’re done for
SomeCessnaDriver@reddit
Surrender all your certs to the FAA, toss the logbook in the bin, start again. It's the only option.
Are you sure one of those 3.1 hour XCs in your logbook isn't a 3.4 ?? :)
TheHidingGoSeeker@reddit
I remember them going out that day and yea now that I think about it, that flight was 3.4
Mydogdexter1@reddit
I can confirm i did see a flight that day as well that was 3.4.

Can confirm, I was the flight.

Bowzy228@reddit
Should’ve used foreflight. You’re already paying for it so might as well use their logbook. It tells you when you meet the requirements and looks cleaner than a paper logbook
DaveTheW1zard@reddit
As long as your CFI didn’t use an autopen, you’re OK
FlyingSceptile@reddit
Biggest question that I haven't seen an answer to: do you already have a Private License or not? If you do not and are prepping for the checkride, you'll have to do another flight. If you already have your license, then that becomes a real pickle as I'm pretty sure both the examiner and instructor that signed you off are required to certify that you meet the requirements.
Muddring@reddit
OP is a CFI. If they got that without a PPL that’s seriously impressive.
Mobe-E-Duck@reddit
After receiving a certificate the requirements are no longer tallied, if I remember correctly.

Didn’t the dpe check your logbook before a checkride to confirm you were eligible?

Don't walk, run! To your nearest FSDO. Own up to the mistake. Not sure where you're at in your career, but, our rules are written with blood. Even a widebody captain would be stressing to get this fixed and would likely be seeking out the nearest DPE to drop a few grand to explain the situation. In all their magnanimity, they may offer to fire a 172 up and do a lap or two down the taxiway to get the ABSOLUTELY NEEDED 0.3.
Blue skies and tailwinds, my friend. Godspeed.

Ignore it. You’re a cfi? Want to risk a whole nightmare? Think about this. If you weren’t qualified to get your private, then your private doesn’t count. You need to get your private to get your commercial. Since you shouldn’t have had your private, you couldn’t get your commercial, which means you couldn’t get your cfi.
In reality, if you report it, they’ll look at the fact you got all your subsequent hours and ratings and declare it an administrative error, and let it go. But why risk it at this point?

I believe that most pilots have done something that is best taken to the grave without ever mentioning it. I sure have. Yours qualifies.

Write an anonymous letter to your PPL DPE with $20 in it saying ‘thanks for being chill, beers on me tonight’

You’re looking at 20 years in the federal penitentiary- what if you crash an airliner with 200 passengers because you didn’t fly that .3?
bhalter80@reddit
Well in the event that you lost your logbook your 8710s would be gospel so worst case if someone wants to fight over it logbook bankruptcy
omalley4n@reddit
Just make sure to apply for a new rating real quick to lock in the recently accumulated hours.
indecision_killingme@reddit
I have seen the FAA require retesting in situations like this before. I would look into weather this would qualify under the VDRP program. Whoever signed the temp should really be reporting it, but you might be able to report it yourself.
Mr-Plop@reddit
Assuming OP is already a CPL being a CFI I wouldn't be too concerned at this point
Red-Truck-Steam@reddit
This is a concern for your CFI and private DPE. If anything, it’s the ultimate plausible deniability situation.
turpentinedreamer@reddit
Yup. Layers of people also looked at the same numbers and said it met the requirements. It’s like in college I didn’t take one of my freshman courses. Like foundations of something or other. Just never took it. Needed it for other classes but got signed into them anyway because they were full. So i never noticed. Anyways second semester senior year rolls around and my advisor and I are looking it all over and notice that I never took that course. He agrees it would be useless to take it since I got a’s in the courses that built on those foundations. My advisor decided that I didn’t need to take it so I never took it. I got my degree and it’s been 12 years.

I don’t think the plane is gonna fall out of the sky because of a rounding error in your logbook
FlyingHigh67@reddit
Don’t do anything about it. You have your license, the examiner didn’t catch it. It’s basically a rounding error.

Do you have a permit/licence? The due diligence is on whoever issued your PPL. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Move on, no one cares. If you started a XC did you spend 0.1 each time before TO or 0.15? If you’re a CFI and nobody has noticed, just move on.
VileInventor@reddit
I mean 1. You can lie or 2. You can go to a FSDO and correct it. Either way I highly doubt they’ll pull your license over it. Probably a good “this is what i learned and i’ll be more careful” story.
